Here's a gif for "anonymous" that asked for it a few weeks ago. Captured by the stellar @sportstudfan from s4e20 - The Dispossessed. A rare bit of tenderness from Jess, seems like Slim brings it out in him.

Is Laramie as gay as it seems?
I'd pay good money to talk to the makers of Laramie (1959-1963). They wrote a show about two roommate cowboys who, completely on free will, legally adopt a child.
Tumblr media
I'm sure Mike was supposed to fill (Slim's brother) Andy's absence, but their dynamic with him is totally different from Andy. Wikipedia describes Mike as "an orphan allowed to live on the farm," but he's not just "allowed" to live there...They sign adoption papers. They're his PARENTS. They hire a nanny!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, according to IMDB, Laramie was the only western show of the time where the characters are seen doing actual chores and realistic upkeep of their farm.
Tumblr media
What were the writers/directors going for? Did they know how homosexually domestic it would come across?
Tumblr media
Did they cast specifically for actors with unique physical chemistry? Or was this just a stroke of luck?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Were they intending to spit in the face of the rampant toxic masculinity of their era? Feel free to share your thoughts. I could talk about this all day.
edit: it's on STARZ if you need a reference

Another fic that I am not going to write but I needed to share:
Andy gets a card from Slim and one of his roommates steals it and reads it.
“Oooh! Who’s Daisy? Did you brother finally get married?”
“No, she’s Mike’s nanny. Remember the kid Slim and Jess adopted after the Indian attack?”
Andy’s roommates stop and look at each other, sigh, pull out whatever the 1870’s equivalent of a PowerPoint is to explain why they are confident slim and Jess are fucking.
And Andy’s like no, of course not, Slim and Jess get mad puss! This is ridiculous!
But he keeps thinking about it because huh they made some really good points and now he can’t sleep so he gets out of bed and composes the fastest letter of his life, runs down to drop it in the mailbox. Tries to put it out of his head.
The next week mail arrives on the stage. There’s a letter from Andy. Slim smiles and calls Jess over to read it. They open it together and all that’s written inside is:
Dear Slim and Jess,
Are you two fucking? Please respond!
Love, Andy

So I’ve watched a good chunk of seasons 3 and 4 of Laramie as well as a few from season 1 and I am now gonna make it all yall’s problem and bless you with my commentary and clips from each episode, enjoy I guess 😂
Without further ado, S1.EP1 Stage Stop
Not the outlaw being upset they spelled his name wrong in the newspaper 😂
Jess’s introduction to Laramie was absolutely terrible, poor guy just got shot at. Absolutely love how he just ignored the lawman when he was told to stop though, a very Jess thing to do 🤣
Jess and Slim’s first meeting is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Let’s take a look at it, shall we?
I mean the first shot alone where they show the sign “Sherman Ranch, No Trespassing” and then cut to Jess just lounging around like he owns the place 😂
And the dialogue:
Slim: What’re you doing here?
Jess: Gettin’ a crick in my back!
Plus this gem:
Jess: I had 3 or 4 swallows out of your private stream. My horse helped himself too, so you just figure out what I owe you, and I’ll be on my way. Oh, and uh, I looked at a bird flying over. Will there be a charge for that?
Look Jess I love you so much but who gave you the right to be so freaking sassy 😂 (we adore him for it though) but Slim had valid concerns, I see both sides of the situation here. I mean Jess, you should’ve read the sign, and I can see why Slim is wary of strangers, but I too would be ticked off if someone just showed up and was holding me at gunpoint
Not Jess just sending Slim flying 😂 boy don’t mess around
Overall I think this first meeting went really well you guys
Andy is so flipping adorable and I would die for him, the way he just gets along so well with Jess right off the bat 😭 10x funnier that he’s Slim’s brother though 🤣
Look at the racoon! And the way Andy washed his food for him 🥺 it's so cute how this little gesture shows how much he knows about animals and how much he cares for them
Tumblr media
When Jess dozed off and Andy came in and startled him and he just whipped around with his gun and when he realized it was Andy and he was so apologetic 😭 but just gets me thinking about Jess being a loner and a drifter and being so used to looking out for himself yet still being so compassionate to this kid he just met. He’s so good with kids and I think it’s just darling seeing him interact with Andy and later on Mike.
Ugh I’m having so many Thoughts on Jess’s childhood, of course they are of the angsty variety, all prompted by these lines of dialogue (putting them in different colors so it's easier to differentiate between them):
Andy: Jess, how old were you when you first went out on your own?
Jess: Can’t hardly remember when I wasn’t on my own, like Jeremiah here and Sam. Only I didn’t find a soft touch like you. Maybe I didn’t want one.
Andy: Do you like it better alone?
Jess: It just worked out that way.
Andy: Don’t you get lonely sometimes?
Jess: You get used to it.
As if these lines weren't heart breaking enough, Jess's tone of voice and facial expressions just really added to it. Yes there will be fics in the future no I do not need more wips
Jess had a fractured skull you say?? *adds to list of details to keep in mind for later*
Look at them playing cards together <3 yes I totally get that Andy's complete and total willingness to trust anyone who comes along is a bit concerning but it's also so sweet and I just love how he interacts with Jess
Tumblr media
The way Andy was just working up the courage to ask Jess to take him with him and Jess being so gentle and telling him maybe when he’s older their relationship is everything you guys 😭
I know at times Slim seems a little harsh on Andy but he really just wants the best for him and it’s sweet.
Love how Jonesy just deescalates the situation so smoothly and just calmly drags Slim away 😂
I’ve noticed that Jess gets called saddle tramp an awful lot so I’m starting a running count, we are currently at 1
Jonesy saying Slim is just a kid is just it’s kinda funny but at the same time - how do I want to explain this? - like Slim is out here saying Andy needs to get things figured out, needs to become a better judge of character, and then Jonesy is just like “you’re figuring things out too pally. you’re responsible for your kid brother now and you still got some things to learn” You can see that Jonesy knows Slim really well and I love their dynamic
Jess was so ready to end Slim right then and there 😂 what can I say, I like my men violent 🤣 seriously tho the fact that Jess and Slim were just constantly beating each other up throughout this entire episode before they decided to try running a ranch together is the funniest thing
Tumblr media
Everything about Bud Carlin irritates me, the way he speaks, the way he moves, his whole demeanor, I just hate it 😂
When Carlin’s asking about how long it takes the stage to get there once it’s in sight and Jonesy’s just out here throwing in a bunch of random circumstances to avoid answering 🤣 and then Carlin gets so irritated that he decides to ask Jess instead lol but Andy just immediately telling him what he wants to know so Jess doesn’t get hurt 😭 bless his little heart AND JONESY REACHING HIS ARM OUT TO GRAB THE GUY WHEN HE WENT TO PUNCH JESS Jonesy's a real one
Tumblr media
When Jess and Andy are out in the barn shoeing the horse and Andy tries to grab a rifle and Jess stops him cuz he didn’t want him to get hurt 😭
Oh when Carlin makes Jess punch Slim in the face… like we know they were about to go at it when he walked in but now Jess is like no way, the friendship is progressing you guys, and poor Slim was just like "do it", somebody get this poor man some ice and an ibuprofen
But as soon as Carlin makes Jess hit Slim that third time he turned on Carlin so fast
Tumblr media
Andy’s voice was almost breaking when he saw Slim laying on the ground and he was trying to wake him up and it almost broke me 😭
The way they all go to check on Slim as soon as the guy leaves the room 🥺
Andy was just begging Jess to go with Slim so that he’d have some help and Jess wouldn’t go and then Andy has tears in his eyes and says “No wonder you travel alone, who’d wanna team up with a saddle tramp like you?” nooooooo 😭 I really act like I’ve never seen this episode before also Jess saddle tramp count is now at 2
They really just threw that guy out of the stagecoach, that wasn’t very nice
JESS CAME BACK yes I already knew this would happen, hush your timing is impeccable pally
Look at these idiots (affectionate) 😂
Tumblr media
Alright I'm gonna write out this scene for you because Reasons (once again in color so it's easier to differentiate):
Pete: I’m hurt bad, Jess. Don’t shoot.
Jess: I was hurt bad too. And it wasn’t just the money Pete.
Pete: I didn’t take it Jess. I swear I didn’t
*Pete proceeds to grab for his gun and Jess shoots him again, sending him flying off the cliff*
So satisfying yall also that dialogue though, I sense another fic in the future
Not the fanning of the guns, ugh I hate when they do that and Jess does it all the time
I love how Jess just puts his gun away and lets Slim deal with Carlin on his own, the way he just saunters over while they’re fist fighting and the way they replay the bit Carlin pulled on them when he made Jess hit Slim, sheer perfection 🤣
Aw Andy was so excited to see Jess and Slim back safely 🥺
Tumblr media
Friendship has been established pallies, that is what we call ✨character development✨
Tumblr media
Also if you haven’t noticed I’m a tad bit obsessed with Jess ok maybe more than a tad so here’s some bonus gifs of him being sassy 😂❤️

You did some really great fics a while back with Slim and Jess from Laramie, any chance you'd be interested in writing another?
Oh man I’ve not thought of them for ages!!!!!! Here, have this! I had to remember what to do for a while but hopefully this is still in character or at least up to scratch,
————
The heat wasn’t unbearable but it was close. Slim sat staring out at the yard, the long expanse of empty road stretching out into the hazy distance. There wouldn’t be any coaches today, if everyone had half the brains in their head he thought they had they’d all stay indoors.
Well. All except one.
Jess had been out in the sun for an hour with his shirt off, tanned skin glistening with sweat. There was an oversized hat on his head protecting him slightly but Slim was moments away from calling him in, dragging him by the elbow if necessary.
Still, it was a hell of a view.
He watched with quiet interest as Jess hammered a fence post, muscles moving under that golden skin, every so often standing straight and stretching his arms up to the sky. Slim had put his hands on almost every inch of that body and still felt the craving like an itch that he couldn’t scratch. Maybe one day that would change, but he couldn’t see that happening any time soon.
He smiled as Jess put the hammer down and sauntered over, wiping sweat from his brow and fanning the hat across his face.
“Sure is hot out here.”
“That’s why I’m in the shade, Jess; you should join me.”
Jess grinned and threw himself on the empty rocking chair. “Good idea… got anything to drink out here?”
He handed Jess the glass of lemonade he had idly sipped beforehand. Jess gulped it down, his throat working with each swallow, and Slim gave in to his hands. He reached out, traced a line down that long neck, missing the way Jess’ lips curved in a smile at the rim of the glass. The sweat-slick skin was hot to the touch and Slim wanted to lick it, to taste the salt there.
“What’s on your mind then, huh?” Jess murmured, head still tipped back as Slim’s fingers danced over his skin.
“Oh, nothing much…” He glanced up, caught the bright glint in Jess’ eyes and couldn’t help grinning. “The usual when I see you, is all.”
Jess tilted his head and took Slim’s hand, gently moved it down to his chest to where his heart lay beating beneath. “Guess that makes two of us.”
The sun continued to beat down on the land. Jess leaned over and placed a kiss on Slim’s cheek, his lips warm and soft, and the sun seemed to get trapped in Slim’s chest.
“C’mon, I need to wash up for dinner or your brothers going to give me a scolding,” Jess said with a quirk of his lips.
They wandered inside, the heat of the day leaving them at the door even if the temperature still stayed high between them.

a few notes on jess and roany in "glory road" :
when i first watched this episode i was impressed by the rather intense and kind of strange storyline for jess, especially considering it was only the second episode of the series! andy calls it like he sees it - and he's right - jess is very afraid of roany, so much so that he is willing to leave Sherman ranch peaceably (rather than say, physically fight roany to get him to leave) i think its quite interesting that the show allows jess to be "afraid" so early on (or at all, honestly) considering that he is, ostensibly, a fairly macho gunslinger-figure, and this is a western tv show made in the fifties (there is a bit of the 1950s "sad-boy" type à la james dean about jess, so perhaps the writers were tapping into that style of on-screen masculinity?)
anyway, we quickly learn exactly why jess is so afraid of roany - he is a reckless tyrant, extremely emotionally unstable, and prone to brutally violent outbursts - the show literally compares him to a rabid animal, seemingly docile one moment and vicious the next
but it's the tone of roany's interactions with jess that really get under my skin...there's a layer of uncomfortableness there that suggests jess is afraid of more than plain old physical violence from roany...
for instance, the bar scene - why have the writers phrased roany's threat in such a way? "almost anything" what, exactly, would jess be willing to do for roany to repay his debt? perform violent acts for him? fight or kill a man? or perhaps something else entirely, as the writers (and jess' stricken expression) seems to be insinuating here - something completely unmentionable
but just in case all that subtext wasn't unsettling enough, later in the episode roany even goes into jess' hotel room in the middle of the night to threaten him some more! jess is literally in bed, vulnerable, being coerced into doing something he doesn't want to do - going beyond the textual reasons for roany's late-night visit, the sexual overtones of this scene are pretty obvious (and again, placing jess in such a vulnerable position so early in the show is such a wildly interesting choice, i would love to know what influenced the writers to go this direction with his character)
+bonus for @harper-sherman, jess looking longingly at slim (and his lips) in the first pic :)

I've been watching through the colour seasons of Laramie, and it's been impossible not to notice the intentional colour choices for Jess and Slim's outfits. Jess is always in cool colours, mostly blue and black, and Slim wears warm reds and browns. This of course is probably meant to reflect their personalities and backstories (Slim as passionate and morally upright, Jess as wandering ex-gunfighter, etc.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are even colour coordinated when they've just rolled out of bed:
Tumblr media
The one thing that they both wear that doesn't match their usual tones is their jackets, in which they each wear the other's colours (the pockets and collar of Slim's jacket are dark blue and Jess's are a reddish brown).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just... think that's sweet :) It shows that they are connected. Each one completes the other. It's also worth noting that sometimes, like in the GIF below with his red and blue checked shirt, little Mike is wearing both of their colours, symbolizing his connection to both of them.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that's all :)

s1:e24 - Street of Hate
Hey y'all, it's been a while! Life has gotten in the way of posting (of course) but I'm going to try to be more consistent, even if that means I just post once a week. Anyway, on to the episode!
This is a solid "pards" episode of Laramie, and has some really great scenes. A townsperson/old friend is paroled out to Slim after serving a manslaughter sentence. The victim's father is quite upset about this guy returning to town and tries to make all sorts of issues, which of course Slim and ultimately Jess get involved in. Charles Bronson plays parolee Frank Buckley; if you're into him, there's a good shirtless scene. I won't go too far into the plot synopsis because this is really one worth watching and I don't want to spoil it. However, I will definitely talk about these screenshots. :)
Early in the episode, Slim and Jess are playing cards in the saloon while waiting for Frank's stage to come in. It looks like Jess is playing solitaire with some input from Slim, which is ridiculously cute. I never paid much attention to this scene until one of my mutuals pointed it out (you know who you are, lol), and I see why it's one of their favorites.
Later on, Jess is breaking in a horse, which leads to a very strange scene of Andy sewing the torn seat of his pants while he's still wearing them. Andy accidentally pokes Jess with the needle, and both Jess' and Slim's reactions are priceless.
We also get a fantastic tandem fight scene that ends with washing up in a water trough after the boys have kicked some ass.
Finally, the episode closes with Slim and Jess sitting on their porch, tattered boots up on the railing...and touching, of course. ❤️💙
