There's a line in MGSV: Ground Zeroes that gives me chills everytime I think about it and it's almost a throwaway because of everything that happens after overshadowing it

Skullface (To Chico): "No more war games, you're a real man now, soldier."

I could argue about how Skullface is so well built up in Ground Zeroes and then..well Phantom Pain but negating that? That line alone, in and of itself and the context is chilling to the core.

Chico is 12/13 around this time, freshly tortured and unable to walk b/c of the bolts in his ankles. And Skullface is aware that he's going to die. (So long as everything goes to plan, and it does in the sense that Chico very much does die). Because in the space of such a short time, Chico loses his innocence, freedom, mobility and sense of self. And then dies in a place he never should've been in to begin with.

All things that, to Skullface, now make him a 'man'. Things that deeply root within a person, alter their psyche and one could argue that had Chico lived, he very much would've been forever mentally and physically scarred, with his childhood self obliterated and buried under irreversible trauma.

(True enough to life in many counts, to be fair)

But Chico does not live, Chico dies small and frail, and every bit the child we know he is. And save for the odd comment from Amanda, Kaz and Venom later on, the so called 'man' is left to faded memory, one of the many casualties to it all. And not the least bit the 'man' Skullface claimed.

And he wasn't supposed to be. He was a kid who died too young and for all his smarts still believe in monsters, and had a vivid imagination and wanted to be grown up like the others, but was youthful enough to have it sometimes pushed aside.

And then, of course, one has to ask:

Is Big Boss not as guilty for Chico being there in the first place? Skullface killed him, but Big Boss held the gun to his head first.

And when I think about how SMALL and frail he is in the chopper, still trying to help Paz. Gah.
