Bradie Tennell's free program costume at the 2020 Four Continents and 2020 Skate America. One of my favourite dresses of hers, so I'm glad she wore it for two different programs: Cinema Paradiso and Sarajevo/Dawn of Faith.

ISU released an article about Shoma
Tumblr media
Two-time ISU World Champion and three-time Olympic medalistShoma Uno of Japan has announced his retirement from competitive skating after a long and distinguished career and is ready to open a new chapter in his life.
“I have decided to retire from active competition,” Uno wrote on Instagram. “I am very grateful to have been able to continue skating for 21 years since I was 5 years old, and to have had a wonderful athletic life.”
The Japanese star will talk in more detail about his retirement and future plans in a press conference scheduled for May 14.
The 26-year-old looks back at a career with many highlights and also difficult times, but he always came back, proving his talent and showing resilience. When five-year-old Shoma went to the ice rink in his hometown of Nagoya with his father to have fun, he had no idea that he would become a World Champion, Olympic medalist and super star of the sport. He only knew that the enjoyed skating and kept coming back to the rink, taking lessons. He trained with Machiko Yamada, the coach of Japanese skating icon Midori Ito and also with Mihoko Higuchi for many years and worked his way up in the skating world.
Uno debuted in the ISU Junior Grand Prix in 2011 and was so tiny that he was unable to look over the boards. He won a few medals on the Junior circuit but his breakthrough came in what was his last Junior season in 2014/15 when he qualified for the first time for the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final where he claimed gold. Shoma went on to take the ISU World Junior title in 2015, in what was his fourth and final appearance at the event (climbing from 10th in 2012, 7th in 2013 and 5th in 2014).
Tumblr media
Once at the senior level, Uno quickly became one of the top Skaters in the World. In his World debut in 2016 he placed 7th but then the next year won silver, his first of a total of four World medals. In his first Olympic Winter Games in 2018, Shoma skated off with the silver medal and returned on to the Olympic podium four years later, earning the bronze. In 2022 and 2023 Uno crowned himself ISU World Champion.
However, in between there was a time of struggle. In the 2019/20 season, for the first (and only) time in his career, Uno finished off the podium in the ISU Grand Prix Series. He had left his coaches since childhood and struggled with confidence.
“At first, to be honest, I was thinking about finishing my career,“ he said in an interview at Skate America 2021 about this time.
“I did not know how much longer I would keep going. But imaging the end (I thought) maybe I'll enjoy the rest of this career as an athlete.“
Uno started to work with two-time World Champion Stéphane Lambiel as his coach and choreographer in fall 2019 and soon came back strong. He grew as an athlete and a performer with beautiful programs that highlighted his versatility: “Turandot” (Free Skating 2017/18), “Great Spirit” (Short Program 2020/21), “Bolero” (Free Skating 2021/22) and “Spiegel im Spiegel” (Free Skating 2023/24) to name a few.
At the same time, the Japanese star always pushed the limits technically and made history by becoming the first Skater to perform a quadruple flip in competition in 2016.
“When I train and want to become better, it's not good for me to work on what I can already do. If I'm satisfied with just giving 80 per cent, I'm not good. The right training for me is to push my limits,” Uno said in an interview.
The Japanese Skater has an independent mind and a fun personality. He has a Youtube Channel where you can meet his three toy poodles Emma, Baron and Toro.
“When I am on the ice, I am totally focused on my sport, but when I'm off the ice, I am sure most people know I am just a lazy slacker, but I thought that would be a good way to show to the people how I am off the ice, but still this is Shoma Uno,” he explained.
When asked who inspires him the most, Shoma’s surprising answer was:
"Myself. Of course, I think I am inspired by many people and heard some good words from everyone, too, but in the end when you break it down, I do feel that it is myself that inspires me and sadly, I don't listen to anyone. Sometimes I listen, but mostly I go with my own mind,” he added.
For sure Uno will follow his own ideas in the years to come but you can certainly expect to see him gracing the ice in shows for a while.

3-23-17: 15 year old Jack Hughes is interviewed by Sherry Bassin and Jesse Pollock, starting at 48 minutes
Transcript below cut (includes an earlier snippet with Mike Traikos)
JP: Mike, there's another young player in Toronto that you've had the opportunity to study, and he goes by the name of Jack Hughes. I was wondering if you could give some input on him as a player and what to expect from him in the future.
SB: Michael wrote an article on him.
MT: Yeah, it's funny. We're talking about young guys, and here's the next wave of the future. Jack Hughes is still two..? years away from getting drafted in the NHL. I think he's 20, I want to say, I think he's 2019 or 2020 draft eligible. So we're talking about real young. But it's funny, when I was coming up with who might be the next Team North America four years later, I had Jack Hughes on the list, and that's how special of a talent this kid is. He's small. He's basically a Johnny Gaudreau or Mitch Marner. But, man, oh, man, he has skill. Skates very much like Connor does, really nifty kind of like Mitch and Johnny in terms of doesn't get hit a whole lot and just puts up just gobs and gobs of points so, he's a name that I think a lot of people are going to be familiar with and you know what, I think what we're seeing now with Connor I remember talking with Jack about this, was his style of play is really kind of catching on at the younger levels like, you watch Connor and nothing is in half speed it seems like he's got the puck and he's just trying to go go go and it's very rare that you see a player who's able to stick handle and carry the puck with the kind of speed and the amount of pace that Connor plays with. And yet all the young guys are now playing that way. So it's having a real trickle-down effect. And I think if you think the league is fast now, just wait until these young guys come into the league, like we mentioned Jack Hughes. And there's so many others that are kind of watching Connor McDavid play, and they're saying, okay, basically that's the kind of style I want to play. I want to have the puck, and I want to play with pace, and I want to just keep pushing it, pushing it, pushing it. And I kind of shudder to think what the league is going to look like in five years when all these speed-throughs are in the game, and they're just whipping around the ice a million miles an hour.
SB: Oh, like if you can't skate in a few years from now, you're going to get windburn. You're going to need Nuxema to put on your neck because they go by you. But the real thing about Jack Hughes is, just like we said about Matthews being a special person, like a top character guy, just like we said about Sheifele and McDavid, like, exudes character. It comes out his fingernails. This guy's a high-character kid. I know the environment. I knew his mother before his father met her and stuff and know what they're all about. But I've often said all the time, you know what I mean? When you put character and ability together, you get a superstar like Matthews and McDavid and these guys.
JP: Sid.
SB: And that's in the- Sid.
MT: And just for a little background for anyone who doesn't know, Jack Hughes, obviously his father, was a longtime player development coach at the Leafs. And say what you will about how he developed players, but this guy definitely knows the approach to take with his sons and his eldest son, Quinn, is in the National Development Program. I believe he's committed to Michigan University.
SB: Yeah, and he's a heck of a player, like a phenomenal player.
MT: Should be a top 10 pick, no question, in 2018. So, yeah, get used to seeing there, hearing about the Hughes kids.
SB: And the younger brother. The younger brother, Luke, is, oh, yeah. These guys, he can go around you, the younger brother, Luke, but he'll go over top you, too. And first of all, their mother was a phenomenal athlete, okay, and high-character people. And so the brother that's with the national development program, he's the best defenseman on that team by far and I think, I think he's he's a candidate to be the best player on that team so you know these guys have come up in an environment like you said I tried to hire his dad as a coach one time and uh, because he is a very good teacher and stuff like that so as you pointed out that uh it's going to be coming in the future. This isn't the end of the great players.
MT: There's an interesting thing about the brother too, Sherry, I'm sorry to cut you off, but Quinn is not a tall fellow by any stretch of the imagination. He might be the Johnny Gaudreau of defensemen where we see Quinn kind of break through in the NHL as a small, skilled defenseman. And I don't think we've really seen that yet. We've seen maybe a couple players here and there, like maybe Ryan Ellis, guys of that nature, but not to the skill level that Quinn Hughes has. So it will be interesting to see where he gets chosen in the NHL and what his path looks like because he could actually end up becoming maybe the first really high-end skilled, really small defenseman. And if he's able to have success in the NHL, I think that opens a lot of doors for a lot of smaller skilled players that maybe are afraid to play defense because it's always thought of as you have to have a bit of size to play the position.
SB: Well, when I see Ellis playing, who I have a lot of respect for, I remember when he played for the Windsor Spitfires, Quinn Hughes is highly, highly skilled, very unselfish, great vision, just like we're talking about Jack. Okay. So, I mean, it's in the family. It's in the DNA and good upbringing. So we shouldn't be worried about these 10 young guns you're talking about because pretty soon you'll be writing about the next 10 young guns.
————
JP: …Hearing him talk about the Hughes kids just excited me. I don't know about you but it just really made me think, how do you develop talent like this? How do you have three kids who could go on to become potential top 10 NHL draft picks? It's incredible. And our next guest, Sherry, Jack Hughes, is going to be able to tell us a bit about that.
SB: Great young kid too. Great young kid.
JP: Alright, we are now pleased to welcome Jack Hughes to the show. Jack, thanks for coming in.
SB: Jack.
JH: Hey, Sherry.
SB: How are you doing, Jack? First of all, I wanted to tell you that we're really excited. Thank you for coming on here. I love interviewing highly talented young people that have high character, and I've known you since you were knee high to a grasshopper.
JH: Haha.
SB: So I'm excited because I really believe in my heart, I'm not trying to be patronizing. You're the best player available in this whole province or whatever available for the OHL draft. I don't want to demean whoever got player of the year. He must be a heck of a player because I know how good you are, and I know what kind of person you are. So I want to thank you for coming on.
JH: Yeah, thanks for having me.
SB: No, no kidding here. So now listen, I'm going to tell something and then I've got to hear from you. Because good players and scoring. Stevie Sullivan came to, played 18 years in the NHL. I've got to tell you this quick story. And he was a free agent, and he wasn't very big. He could skate like you can skate, and he played 18 years. And we had four scrimmages in training camp, and he got 19 points in our training camp at Sault Ste. Marie. So right away, I said to my assistant manager, get him up there and we give him a full scholarship for education and stuff like that. And he was sitting between his parents and I said to him, how many points do you have in these scrimmages? He says, I don't know. I said, you're a liar. Called him a liar right to his face. And he looked at me and the parents had never met me He said I've never known a guy that got a lot of points That didn't know how many points I said how many points you got. He said around 18. I said you're damn right you got 19. Now how many points you got this year?
JH: I think I had around 170.
SB: 170. In how many games?
JH: 75, 80…
SB: 75, 80. How's your math, Minion? How is your math here?
JP: My math isn't good, but I know that that's pretty impressive.
SB: That's more than impressive. Now tell me something. First of all, I know your family really well. I know the upbringing. I know what it's all about. And, you know, I think your brother, Quinn, who I know very well too, and I think he's the best, for sure, the best defenseman on the U.S. team, if not the best player. I know your brother, Luke, who I think is going to be one of the best. He might even be better than you two guys when it comes to it. Now tell me about all this. When you're as talented as you are, the high character that you have, the environment that you were brought up in, tell me about this when everybody's saying you're going to be the first pick and you're the best player. How do you deal with it day to day and people talking to you?
JH: I mean, really, I'm just trying to enjoy it. I mean, it only happens once, right? I only go through the OHL draft once. I'm just trying to enjoy it with my friends, my family. Just taking it lightly, I’m never- I’m not the cock- I'm not being cocky or anything, like shooting my mouth off. Really just like, just trying to have fun with it I guess. And not taking any pressure.
SB: Well good for you. First of all you're never going to be cocky with it. You're humble, and you've stayed at my house and everything, and I know what you are. And I think one of the biggest reasons you're a star and going to be a superstar is because of your character and because of your upbringing. So I'm not surprised, but you've got to be thinking about it, and good that you're having fun because that's what life's about. I used to tell my players all the time, winning is fun. Let's go have some fun.
JP: Jack, your dad, Jim, was the director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. And I just want to hear from you what role that helped in developing you and your brothers as hockey players and the type of training and the programs that he puts you in as kids because it's quite incredible to see. We mentioned earlier on the show that three brothers could all potentially be top 10 NHL picks one day. It's incredible to think about, and it's no coincidence.
JH: Yeah, for sure. I mean, like, the mental things he would tell us tell us like, the things he would be telling the 19, 20 year old Maple Leafs prospects he'd be telling the same things to us when we were 10, 11, 12, 13, like just he made us think like a pro I guess and just the way we train we did so methodically like everything we did, hard work. He and my mother taught me so much. Everything I know is from them. The things they did with us, shooting in the basement, taking us to outdoor hockey. They've done so much for us, both mentally and physically. They've made us better people and better players.
SB: Well, first of all, your mother was a heck of an athlete. Let's not forget that. And I knew your grandparents very well, and your grandmother is still alive, and your grandfather died prematurely from cancer, which just makes me, it hurts just when I talk about it. But I can tell you this, that that kind of an an environment- I tried to hire your dad as a coach one time
JH: Haha
SB: He told me to suck eggs there and so forth and so forth but anyway he did, so I know the family and stuff and tell us about this, when you're so committed like you are, because I always believe motivation is how bad you believe in something times how bad you want to attain it. I know how bad you believe in it. I know how you live it. I know how bad you want to attain it. So what is your typical week during hockey season? How often are you on the ice?
JH: Yeah, for sure. I mean, I think we practice with practice with the Marlies, we practice three times a week, um some weeks we played once a week some weeks we played four times a week and then like as much as I can I try to get in the gym try to get stronger maybe once or twice a week and maybe do a little bit of extra skills with like groups called like, prep um pro edge power [he means Power Edge Pro] like I think that's McDavid's group. I mean we practice four times a week then spend two games so we're probably on the ice six out of seven days a week and then O mean just the fun aspects of it like when it comes to winter time, I mean me and my friends are always going to the outdoor rink and just playing four hours of shinny whenever we can. I mean, we just, I think we just live it. I mean, I love it. It's not work to me. It's all fun, right? So, I mean, I can never get enough of it.
SB: Yeah, I mean, the thing about it is you love it by conduct, going to outdoor rinks. I mean, I grew up on outdoor rinks, and I'm a little bit – I'm a couple years older than you. But the thing is this, is that that's just an example, and you couldn't get enough of it. Like you say, you'd be there four hours, and if the ice was still there, you'd have stayed longer.
JH: Mhm.
SB; That's your feeling for it, and that's why you're this good, and I'm excited to be able to tell people about it.
JP:  Jack you mentioned earlier that your parents really helped you develop into a good hockey player but also a good person and that's something that Sherry emphasizes just as much as anything really the importance of that and uh I think that's really great that you mentioned that. I want to ask you something in regards to the OHL. I know that you applied for exceptional status and ultimately it was denied. So I was wondering if you can talk about that experience and how maybe that will help you going forward or if it sparked anything in you.
JH: Yeah, for sure. I mean, that was such a great experience going through that process like all the interviews meeting people I did. I mean, it just made me mature so much faster I think, and I mean it was just great for me to grow up that fast I think, I know like, it wasn't really publicized or anything like that, but behind the scenes it was really good for me. Um, I think it was a blessing that I didn't get it because I mean it helped me like, it allowed myself to stay at home another year and have one more year of minor midget where I could really excel. So I think, I think that process was really good for me, like meeting the people I did, and just hearing things about the league. And I learned a lot of new things about myself as well, I think.
SB: Well, Jack, there's no question. I mean, you've seen it. I've known it for years. I mean, what people, when they watch you, never mind your just ability, never mind his skill, Minion. He's a phenomenal team player, phenomenal team player, got great vision. If if you're open you're going to get the puck and and it's sometimes it's frustrating because when you're that- got that much ability that he does, he never shows any negativity on the ice you know, which I really respect in this guy and sometimes when you're that skilled and you give the puck and you're not getting it back, you know what I mean? He never showed any negative emotion. And so this guy's destined for big things, like big, big things. And listen, I can't thank you enough. I mean, you just, you know, just by listening to you, we know the character. We know the environment you're a product of. You know that I love your parents and love your family. But besides that, it's because of the people you are, never mind the fact that you happen to be a good hockey player. So all I know is that big things are destined for you, and I really want to thank you a lot for coming on.
JH: Yeah, thank you, Sherry.
SB: Good to talk to you. Keep punching.
JP: Thanks, Jack. Good luck.
JH: Thank you, yeah.
JP: What a mature, young individual, Sherry.
SB: It's hard to believe that he's only 15 going on 16, isn't it? I have said over and over with you and all the time we've got to visit since you were a little guy, okay, all the time, that the average 16 year old to 19 year old that plays in the OHL or plays in the- is a way more mature than the average 16 year old that you run to in the street because of all the decisions all the things that he had to do I mean think about what he talked about his commitment: four hours on an outdoor rink playing with his buddies. And it wasn't work. It was fun. Going to the gym regularly. Think about being the right kind of person in the environment that he's a product of. His mom and dad, I mean, who I know very, very well. You know, with the direction. And it's frustrating when you're that talented, when you're playing with players that they know they're trying their best, but when you're above their ability, so to speak, and that's not meant with disrespect to the players because they're not all born equal as hockey players, don't all have the same commitment, and you're playing with them and you don't get the puck back or you do certain things and not let it bother you because inside it's got to bother you because you think if I just got this i'm watching a game one time where he goes in tick-tack-toe how's your mama on the defenseman goes right by the guy makes a phenomenal shot scores a goal called back as a guy three zones away got a penalty and so all those 170 some points he talked about weren't one of the points and so, but he never showed that frustration, never showed frustration. Because he didn't get player of the year, whatever it is. And I'm sure this kid is a heck of a player. I'm not trying to demean anyone. But inside, when you got that competitive spirit, and especially- the guy that got it, he's a super superstar then. Because this guy's a superstar. And it was even hard for me to accept because I knew him so well but I don't want to demean the other guy I didn't see him enough and-
JP: And it's a humbling experience, one day he's going to look back at it and maybe he'll say this was the best thing that happened to me as a teenager.
SB: Yeah what you just said when you asked that question about exceptional player.

Intro to Scouting for Nancy Drew Fans
i love to see Ace's Eagle Scout status come up in fics. Although it was almost a throw-away line, I think it informs Ace's character and fleshes out his backstory well, beyond just knowing knots and navigating the woods. But I see a lot of awkward phrasing, and I see a lot of missed opportunities to bring it up, and it got me wondering if a little primer would be helpful.
Things Ace could say: "I learned this in Boy Scouts." "My troop leader took us out here all the time." "This trail didn't go this way back when I was in Scouts." "Don't worry, they love me here--my eagle project was to clean up this beach." "Don't talk to me about Jared Spriggs-- I'll never forgive him for what he did to my derby car when I was 14."
Eagle Scout is a rank and an honor that he achieved, not a program he was in. The program is Boy Scouts of America (BSA). People familiar with the program will just say Boy Scouts or Scouts. After 100 years of only allowing boys to participate, the program became co-ed in 2019, so it's now called Scouts BSA, not Boy Scouts. Ace would have grown up in the program before then since he turned 18 in 2016.
If Ace started in scouting before he was 11, he would have been in Cub Scouts. At 11, he could move up to the scouting troop. There are ranks in scouting, tied to the number of merit badges you've earned. Eagle Scout is the top rank and must be achieved before the age of 18. It involves a certain number of merit badges, hours of volunteer work, and a main Eagle Scout Service Project that they must plan and execute themselves (with assistance from scout leaders and parents).
I think it highly likely that the Captain was a troop leader or otherwise involved in scouting, especially before his accident. I can see his mom stepping in as well- if I remember right, women could be pack leaders even before 2016.
Although most people work toward Eagle as 16-17 year olds, it's possible to achieve it earlier, especially if you're smart and committed like Ace. So his pot-smoking days could come after he earned Eagle and lost interest in Scouts, or they could coexist. Your call.
Although people assume scouting is about wilderness preparedness, the program's goal is to create well-rounded, responsible citizens. Ace would have the Oath and Law memorized.
Scout Oath
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.
Scout Law
A Scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent
As you can guess, being Jewish might have been tricky for Ace in a program that's culturally Christian as many 20th century American institutions are. That'd also depend on what his troop was like--was there one troop for the whole town, or maybe his synagogue hosted a troop?
There's a Sea Scouts program. Where I'm from is landlocked so I don't know anything about it, but Horseshoe Bay or a nearby bigger town would definitely have Sea Scouting!
Lastly, here are the current Merit Badge categories: it covers a lot more than knots! Ace often gets into hacking in pre-series fics by hanging out at the library with his mom after school. But what if he was introduced to programming in Scouts? And I'm sure Florence helped him complete many merit badges.

— HISTORY
2001 - 2008 Siyeon was born in Los Angeles, California. Her parents, a Nigerian woman, and a Korean man, were high school sweethearts who would love each other to the very end. Unfortunately, when Siyeon was 7 years old, her parents fell victim to a car accident involving a drunk driver. So, at age 7, she was moved to live with her maternal grandmother, who lived in San Jose, California.
2008 - 2015 While living with her grandmother, Siyeon continued her figure skating training and picked up taekwondo as well. Also, at this time, she met Yeonjun, as they happened to live in the same neighborhood, and Siyeon’s grandmother wanted her to stay connected to her Korean roots. They remained close friends for the two years he lived in San Jose.
Later, in 2013, Siyeon suffered an ACL injury while practicing her figure skating. Thankfully, it was not too severe, but it stopped her from pursuing a professional figure skating career. After she fully healed a year later, she began to focus more on dance.
In late 2014, she saw that auditions for BigHit online and decided to audition. She was accepted and began her training in 2015.
2015 - 2019 Siyeon moves to Korea and is reunited with her paternal grandparents, who become her biggest supporters alongside her maternal grandmother. She also meets Yeonjun again, and they quickly become close again. They also met the rest of the TXT members when they all joined in 2016 and were confirmed to be in the debut lineup for TXT.
However, in 2017, Siyeon’s maternal grandmother had a health scare and ended up in the hospital for some time. Siyeon almost gave up her debut spot in order to go back to America to be with her grandmother, but her grandmother insisted that she would be fine and continue following her dream. During this time, the other members supported her and helped her whenever she had a rough time, even when she refused to open up about how she was truly feeling. Her grandmother made a full recovery.
When her introduction video was released in 2019, there were many mixed emotions about her being in the group as the only girl, along with racist remarks from netizens all over. However, she still received a lot of love and support from international fans, and like Yeonjun, her introduction video gained 1 million views in 24 hours.
2019 - Present Siyeon officially debuts along with Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai on March 4th, 2019. During this time, she, along with her fellow groupmates, face many struggles during their debut year and going into 2020 following the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.
In 2020, between The Dream Chapter: Eternity and Minisode 1: Blue Hour, Siyeon realized her feelings for her group members, which made her unintentionally avoid them outside of schedules. She does eventually express her feelings to them, and they slowly begin a poly relationship.
Despite the internal struggles they each face when entering a relationship, TXT grows closer than ever and remains in a happy relationship.
Siyeon also grows as a person and artist, becoming a role model for younger groups and the newer generation.

american media: its effects on the teenage prodigy
For those who don't know, one of my favorite skaters is Alysa Liu.
Alysa is a 2x US national champion, junior and senior world bronze medalist, and 2022 Olympian.
But, one thing about her is when you look her up, one of the subheadings on her wikipedia is "2021–22 season: International senior debut, Beijing Olympics, World Championships, and retirement".
What happened to her? What was so troubling about the 2021/22 season that caused this all to happen at once, and at the age of 16?
From my limited research but somewhat extensive knowledge, the one thing I can connect this early retirement to is the American media.
Before I start, I just want to preface that I am very glad they retired on their own terms, and not due to injury or something worse. Though I do miss them.
-
Alysa was 13 when she won her first senior national title in January 2019, the youngest female to win US nationals as of today. She defended her title the next year, winning back-to-back nationals at only 14 years old.
Also in the 2019/2020 season, they had their international junior debut. During this, they became the first woman to complete a triple axel and quadruple jump in competition, as well as achieving the status of the first non-Russian girl to win a Grand Prix event for around 20 competitions. They went on to win bronze at the World Junior Championships in March 2020.
This bout of success caused eyes of every American media outlet to be focused on young Alysa. They started deeming her as an American prodigy, the only hope to have an Olympic medal in Ladies' Single Skating at Beijing 2022. This was still two years away from the Winter Olympics, and she was only 14.
The next year, 2021, Alysa underwent a growth spurt, which, obviously, is normal for a 15 year old girl. Because of this, she lost her triple axel and quadruple lutz jumps, causing American media to forget her, or worse, doubt and even berate her. If she can't beat the Russians at the next Olympics, who can? The media gave up hope on her and did not care about the effects of doing so.
Cut to the 2021/2022 season, Alysa's international senior debut. She officially secured the third spot for US ladies at the Olympics, and performed average at her Grand Prix assignments, placing fourth at both. She had to withdraw from US Nationals due to COVID, but still managed to petition for a spot on the 2022 Olympic team thanks to her performance history. Once again, she was America's "only hope" for a spot on that podium.
Overall, she placed 7th, the highest out of the three American female skaters. She claimed she was pleased with her performances, and that she was just happy to be in Beijing. A little over a month later, she won bronze at the 2022 World Championships, being the first American woman to medal since 2016.
Months later, they announced their retirement, and have not (publicly) skated competitively or professionally since.
They also archived all social media.
While other reasons can be argued for this happening, the main one is the pressure put on Alysa at such a young age to be the saving grace of American figure skating.
I know you're wondering, has the media learned and changed?
And as an answer, I will point you in the direction of 18 year old Ilia Malinin, who media has dubbed "heaven-sent for US figure skating", or even tell you to keep an eye on 15 year old Isabeau Levito, "America's new hope".

What do you make of where Soucisse/Firus are with their skating? On the one hand, I felt for them as they got overshadowed in Canadian skating and at IAM by some teams switching to Canada and others moving into seniors. On the other hand, I can’t say I’ve noticed much improvement or progress from S/F either. Will they qualify for Worlds this year?
they have their minimums for Worlds, so i think they're going
i had to refresh my memory, and 👀 they had good programs from Gadbois in 2017-18. that was their 2nd season together, and they won silver at 4CC (in an Olympic year, but still) and were on the Worlds team and were 14th. they had a different energy about them back then - they had a sense of hope and potential
idk why the wheels came off so soon after that - they stayed at IAM 2 more seasons til April 2020, but 2018-19 they had a misfire of an FD - does a good program with music by The Weeknd exist? it was a stretch, and maybe an attempt to be more contemporary and edgy, but it didn't play with the judges, and they look a little labored. then 2019-20 was when they had a lot of big mistakes. maybe their confidence was shaken for the reasons you said, maybe they were injured along the way? because they were recycling lifts and not getting better
when you see teams like LaLa and CPom really improving, they deserve so much credit- to increase in speed, power, skating skill, artistry, mental toughness under pressure - the closer you get to the most elite level, each step takes exponentially more understanding and growth to integrate. and it's harder to correct weaknesses after they're habitual
S/F stabilized and looked happier after they moved to Carol Lane in 2020, but i don't know that they've really changed much about their basics. and i don't think you can rise without that. their recent material hasn't been particularly memorable - the Charles Aznavour FD they're doing now is a revised version of the one they did for 2021-22. i get that Worlds is in Montreal, and Aznavour is a good fit for that, but they weren’t competing for an entire year - why aren't they skating something new?
2022 Skate America in Norwood had a really knowledgeable and supportive crowd that was warm and appreciative of the skaters, lots of love all around. so it was strange that the one team the crowd went lukewarm for was S/F. the energy left the building for them. for me, it’s hard to get a sense of who they are, and too often it looks like they're skating while music plays - sometimes it looks like the audio on their programs is off because they're so disconnected from the music. i'm glad they have new opportunities, glad when they look a little sharper in their RD, but ultimately, i find them kind of frustrating

Flannels #2
When I was growing up, I found it difficult to connect with my mother. She and I are very different people. While she loves to wear dresses, I adore pants. While she loves to roller skate, I prefer to keep my feet preferably off anything that has wheels. My mother was not happy when I was child. My father was emotionally and physically abusive and unfaithful. I wonder if even if he hadn’t been any of those things if she and I would have gotten along better when I was growing up and all my interests were more masculine. I loved to play soccer, which she decried as a man’s sport. I wanted to run around with my male friends, even though she told me I should not be friends with just boys. I just wanted to play the guitar, but she encouraged me to choose the piano instead.
However, she did encourage one of my interests, which was reading and writing. The problem was that she did not really know what books I was reading because they were in English and American. There was one book that she did mention one day that made me want to read it so that I would have something in common with her: Little Women. For whatever reason, I thought that she had read Little Women when she was growing up, so that made me want to read that book. When I read Little Women, all I see is me in Josephine March’s character. I am Jo: passionate, scared of her anger, masculine, motivated, smart, reckless. Later in life, I found out that my mom has actually never read Little Women and that she had only watched the 1994 movie. It didn’t matter to me. In an attempt to bond with my mother, I had found a book character that I have not bonded with any other in the same manner.
In many ways, Little Women has helped me in hard times. After a painful breakup with an ex boyfriend that still hurts to this day because of how I hurt him, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women was released in 2019. In that moment more than ever, I understood how and why Jo was so scared of her anger and her desire to not lose herself when she is filled with rage. One of my recurring nightmares involves hurting the people I love and feeling immense rage that I cannot control. I am scared of myself, but I am improving. When the pandemic occurred and I had to complete my last college semester in my home, my productivity ranked as I was faced with writing 30 pages for my undergraduate thesis. Inspiration was hard to find and it was easy to get distracted. More as a joke than anything else, I started to put on the first flannel I ever purchased in an attempt to mimic Jo Marsh when she was in a writing frenzy and she put on a coat and hat. I never put on a hat, but I did put my flannel on as I wrote about the moral implication of God telling Abraham to kill his only son. Somehow, I turned in a product that earned an A and I graduated with honors. I doubt the flannel contributed much, but it was the first time I would wear it in front of my mother and it made me feel like my literary hero. Jo Marsh is frozen in time as the epitome of a young woman that struggled to fit in the society of civil war America. I am unfortunately not frozen in time, but I still struggle to figure out where in society I fit in. All I know is that what I had in common with Jo March as a 13 year old reading Little Women for the first time is very similar to what I have in common with her as a 24 year old. While I no longer wear that flannel when I am in a writing frenzy, I do long for the time when I shut myself in my room and wrote away in the night in 2020 just like she did in the 1860s. I think if Jo March existed today, she would definitely be wearing flannels as she types away in a coffee shop or library, ready to inspire future generations of young women.

Steve Tony Weekly - December 11th
Tumblr media
Happy Sunday! Here’s what I’ve read this week. Enjoy and remember to leave your author comments/kudos.
***Marks my recent favorites
~*~
Selfish Secret by ABrighterDarkness
He felt a heavy roll of animosity and jealousy roll through him strong enough to make his teeth ache as he watched that familiarly muscled arm drape over someone else’s shoulders. Tony could feel that comforting weight across his own as crystal clear in memory as the visual he was being treated to.
Hold Fast, Dear Captain by RoseGoldAmpersand
Tony remembered Doctor Stephen Strange from the more wild nights of his youth, but he was pretty sure Strange hadn't worn a cape back then. At an Avenger's gala, Tony reunites with his ex-lover and a jealous Captain America sets out to remind his partner exactly who it is he belongs to.
Never Mind Where I Am by scribblywobblytimeylimey
“Please tell me you just kissed me.”
Tony wakes up from his fall in New York heavily concussed. He may not know where he is, what just happened, or who the people around him are; but even without his memories, he’s willing to bet the man at his side is the most beautiful human being he’s ever laid eyes on.
Insta-Family by parkrstark
Tony and Steve foster Harley and Peter: two boys with their own trauma to deal with. It isn't as easy as they thought it'd be, and it takes the four of them some time before they become a family.
This series follows this family and their extended family through life.
Happy Birthday, Mr. President by navaan
Steve does not expect to see Tony before the festivities begin in Washington. Of course, Tony wants the president to open his present as early as possible.

All I Want For Christmas Is You by xmarrrvelx (cptstarkrogers)
"It's snowing." Steve didn't need to look down to know that Tony was gazing up at him with those wonderful eyes.
"Yes, it is."
"I'm borrrrreeeeed—"
Steve had to bite down on his lip to keep from laughing. "Oh, are you now?"
"Can we go ice skating?"
That certainly took Steve by surprise.
The Sea Ice: -1.8 °C (28.8 °F) by schmevil
O brave new world, that has such people in it. Always-a-girl!Cap adjusts to life after the ice.
gripping the ledge of unreason by firebrands
tony and steve have known each other for years, and finally opened a bookstore together. steve has learned to keep his feeling in check, and then tony had to go and quote poetry at him.
(Marvel Bingo 2019 fill for "book store"
Mobius Strip by dirigibleplumbing
Steve sets off to return the Infinity Stones. It ends up not being quite as straightforward as he'd imagined.
A Long, Final Rest Among the Stars by nostalgicatsea
This wasn’t a cave. Nebula wasn’t Yinsen, and they weren’t captives. But he had come full circle back to Afghanistan.
He was stranded, with no sign of life anywhere and no hope of rescue. And he was going to die.
Like a Comet Streaming On by Sineala
Tony escapes Afghanistan with a functioning Iron Man suit and a perfectly normal heart. He even manages to bring Ho Yinsen home safely at his side. But he may as well have lost everything... because his wolfbrother is dead. Six months later, the Avengers find Captain America, frozen in ice, miraculously alive. Everything and everyone Steve has ever known is gone -- except his wolfsister, the recipient of the lupine version of the super-soldier serum, who was frozen in his arms. Tony has everything but his wolf. Steve has only his wolf. This is how their lives fit together.
A reread but one of my favorite AU’s. Just gorgeous.
crush my lips to wine by meidui
Their first real kiss is under an olive tree in the summertime, as the sun sets softly. The kiss tastes like honey and wine.
Principle of the Thing by Annie D (scaramouche)
In Tony’s opinion, the only thing worse than having a crush on Steve is: having a crush on Steve while Steve won’t shut up about how great Tony is.
The Kiss with the Thousand Flavors by ralsbecket
He had a stupid grin on his face after Tony pulled away, gazing directly into his whiskey-brown eyes. Steve’s confession came out like a breath, “Tony, I think I love you.” And then he kissed him one more time, just because he could.
Or, chronicling Steve and Tony's love story through fifty kinds of kisses.
***Relativistic Heat Conduction by BlossomsintheMist
Age of Ultron-based, but not entirely canon compliant. Written for the 2013 Cap-Iron Man Reverse Big Bang. Ultron has attacked, obliterating most of the world's superheroes and resistance in a matter of hours. The remaining heroes band together and share what strength they have to get through it, to survive, and defeat Ultron once and for all. Steve Rogers grieves in the wake of the disaster and the heroes' defeat, and no one knows if he will be able to provide the leadership they need--but Tony Stark isn't about to let him slip away that easily.
It’s been on my list to read for forever and it was just as good as I hoped it would be and utterly heartbreaking.
****Silver Glass by BlossomsintheMist
“I would wait forever,” Tony tells him, mouth still soft and warm on his neck, “but no,” he says, “not long.” Something of a coda to Relativistic Heat Conduction.
Gorgeous coda that made me tear up.

past years: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
[click to enlarge if needed] it’s that time of year again! 2022 has been a slow but good year overall. slow... but also a year that went by so quickly. didn’t consume as much media as I would have wanted (lots of trash tv, not many movies, and the brain wasn’t able to focus on reading a book in the second half of the year;;) but I did explore some new music! changed my hair colour a ton, and saw lots of skating (short track and figure skating!) especially in the second half of the year! I even got my first professional gig(tm) as media at skate america and interviewed my fav boy jun (aka the most stressful moment of my life!) ;;
who knows if I’ll migrate back here with twitter slowly seeing its downfall thanks to incompetent rich people but!!! one thing that will always remain is the my year in a nutshell tradition <3
see you in 2023! the first three months are looking up to be a busy (and fun) for me which is great!
