Hmm… been thinkin’ ‘bout the E-65 Pokémon AU I’ve been twistin’ around in my head and my pre-existing Pokémon OCs. I don’t really feel comfortable using the game’s main protagonists in any story in this universe since they don’t really have much character due to basically being meant as self-inserts, so while it probably doesn’t really matter since they’ll likely only be in cameos, I’m pondering just filling in the role with my OCs…

Another year Another summary of Art! An Entire Year of Submas lets gooooooooooo!!!! This year I feel like I really pushed myself when it comes to illustrations and I feel like I've learned a lot! But at the same time I feel a little tired, next year I think I wanna relax and experiment a bit more, I gotta learn to loosen up! Might get more art out if I do :p
I also feel the Submas grip ever so lightly relaxing (unless they decide to do Unova remakes haha XD), so I might introduce some of my numerous ocs in 2024! I'll probably start with the conductor oc ;]
Thank you for all your support! (you are all very nice! ToT), I still have a good amount of submas stuff planned in the works so look forward to that (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧
If you are interested, I also have some commentary and behind the scenes for some of my submas illustrations! I wanna talk about it and now seems like a good time to do so now that the year is over! (Beware! its going to be long!)
All titles are linked to the original post
Lunch Break
hoho! This one is the sort of AU thing in which the only thing that changes is that I give Emmet a Victini friend (not a part of his team, I dubbed them the "victory duo" because Emmet likes winning and Victini is the Victory Pokemon), I planned out a few wordless comics regarding the idea, they were all very lighthearted slice of life kind of stuff, usually Victini causing some mischief and the brothers having to deal with it
Tumblr media
and here's the thumbnails for this piece! I played around with various angles but decided to keep it simple and choose a straight on angle. It was originally a snack break and Emmet sharing a granola bar with Victini, but as I was planning it, submas unexpectedly showed up in the Pokemon Anime where they were serving ekiben, after learning about it it quickly turned into a lunch break! (how fun when new information lines up with an art piece you are working on hoho! ^ ^) After studying what foods Ekiben usually have in them (there was quite a variety!) I took what I learned and try to make the food look like the gear station logo :D
In the background there are children drawings because in the battle subway one of the trainer classes you can face off against are preschoolers, and I thought at least one of them would share their drawings with the subway bosses (and of course why wouldn't they hang it up?), there is also a trophy in which you can get in the players room if you beat the subway bosses on the super trains (one day, battling competitively is not my forte), I did my best to make Emmet's office feel lived in by adding a little bit of clutter (like adding a note) but overall very organized
(hey hey that joltik mug looks familiar in the corner there, its the same one Rei is holding in the christmas drawing)
Tumblr media
Bonus Emmet and Victini Drawings
aw come on dude, not on the trains!
ah this one, it gave me quite a bit of frustration! This piece I used to challenge myself on perspective, and challenge me it did! The version you see now is I believe the 6th iteration of this drawing! The reason for restarting so many times is because I originally wanted it to be in 3 point perspective, but I couldn't get it to look right so its now in 2 point... Haha Some valuable lessons learned there!
This illustration was inspired by the history of New York Subway Trains and Graffiti! I read about it when I got to visit the New York Transit Museum and found it super interesting!! Then I went I gotta do something with this! Since Unova is based in New York after all!
I got so many subway surfer comments, they don’t know I forgot subway surfers existed while making this and that I am a huge nerd lmao
Tumblr media
I had a lot of fun designing the graffiti on the train (yes it says among us) stylizing the fictional letters was so fun! I studied some graffiti to see how they do it, I could've pushed the graffiti style more but then it would be illegible! I also mixed in elements of Grafaiai graffiti, and trainer that is running away is the artist trainer class in SCVL because they are graffiti artists! And the train that got graffitied is the Wifi Train, due to BW (and the DS) servers being shut down, I doubt that train gets used much anymore, which makes it a perfect target!
Derailed!
hohoho! This was a fun one! I'm not sure how many of you guys read my tags, but in there I did state that this piece was based off the fact that model trains are powered by electrifying the rail it runs on (very low watts mind you) and the fact that Joltik eats electricity, but thats not the only inspiration, it was also inspired by those videos of cats laying on the layout and derailing the train!
Tumblr media
Theres quite a variety of thumbnails for this idea (including a comic!), and the idea was there in 2022, but this year I decided to fully commit to it! I started rendering the top right one and almost finished it, but it felt really boring to me, so I switched it up and made some thumbnails in a new perspective and viola! thats what ended up being finished!
The train that is being derailed are Sanriku Railway Type 36s, based off a model train I have in my collection! (While sharing this fact on the original post Haiku Bot detected it as a Haiku?! and this art went out of my target audience, that certainly was a day (⊙□⊙;))
Tumblr media
Also I straight up put a picture of Thomas the Tank Engine in the background, I'm not sure if people noticed cuz its quite blurry, the fact that nobody said anything means I probably would’ve gotten away with it before sharing this fact, so hehe :3c
Unexplained Melancholy
eyy! this one! It started out wholly different
Tumblr media
It was originally me dropping Warden Ingo in various natural landscapes around Hisui as I didn't feel like drawing anymore linear perspective (ah, but heres the thing, all environments require a little bit of perspective lol), and it was just going to be Warden Ingo hanging out in a lush forest, specifically by the train rock that was shown in his concept art! but after sitting on it, I realized I could do something more with it! by making it a snowy environment I could make callbacks to Emmet's coat being white! hence the "SNOWY!!!" being scribbled there, that was added like weeks afterwards, Then I realized I could push it even more by making the whole environment about Emmet's colors! So the new thumbnail is in color because thats whats its about!
The moon smile thing was stumbled on by complete accident, while working on it it felt empty there and I added Emmet's smile to fill the space before going "moon!!!"
The piece is also a sort of a parallel to last years piece “I am Emmet, I wish for Ingo and I to be a two-car train once more” composition wise, sort of, I tried to at least 👍
Black Tower and Whitetree Hollow
Ah! I was quite proud of this one! Black City and White Forest are some of my favorite places in Unova mainly because the parallels are so very cool!
Tumblr media
As the thumbnails suggest it was all going to be in complete black and white, as I was working on it though I could not help but add some values in there so yup! I quite like both compositions but the perspective won me out, plus that one focuses more on the characters than the other one (as much as I love backgrounds, it really is supposed to be about Emmet and Ingo U_U)
Being places of duality and having a battle challenge in there, it really fit them!
Emmet drops the hottest single of all time 🔥🔥🔥
Not really much to say about this one since it was very much done on a whim, but
Tumblr media
its not the first time I drew Emmet with his hat backwards, I did this little doodle around the same time I did the train graffiti piece, been wanting to do something with this silly idea, and when I heard that audio, I went :o
Following Some Rumors of a Time Machine
the finale! I decided to choose Area Zero because its a very cool place! I am inspired by cool places! and I decided to give it my all for this one!
Tumblr media
The thumbnail I made was more for jotting down the idea, and the landscape was going to be more eyelevel? Later I decided to make it so you were looking down into the crater and you get to see the fog blocking the crystal caverns, to show that Emmet was going deeper into Area Zero and the Deepest part is his destination (the time machine, not the underdepths, I didn't know about that yet haha!) I was always going to make Emmet encounter a Slither Wing, with it being based off Volcarona, a gen 5 pokemon :]
Anyways, That's all I have to say! I hope you found it interesting! (and enjoyed my varying quality in sketches and thumbnails XD) Thanks for listening! see you in 2024! ✌

HAPPY POKÉMON DAY!!! 🥳🎊🎉
This is what happens when @theemberwithin and I are allowed to cosplay from Pokémon at the same event together. Chaos and dank memes galore! 🤭
I had so much fun debuting my Hilda cosplay at MAGFest last month. There's nothing that I love more than Pokémon, and I've been wanting to cosplay as Hilda for the longest time now! Unova is one of the best regions in the Pokémon universe, and I always loved Hilda's character design so very much.
My heart might belong to Sinnoh, but I do have a soft spot for Unova, especially since it's based off of the New York City metro area. I've lived near New York most of my life, so playing through Pokémon in a region based off of my home was one of the biggest highlights of my Pokémon journey! I also met a lot of my closest friends when Gen 5 first released, so I'll always look back at that time in my life with deep fondness. 🥰
How is everyone celebrating Pokémon Day today? I'll be booting up Scarlet version later tonight for some EV training! I still have to finish up my DLC adventures, and I'm so stoked to get back into shiny hunting!
I can't wait to bring Hilda with me to more events this year! 🖤🤍✨️

BONUS: Pokestar Studios
Tumblr media
When expanding the region of Unova for the Black and White sequel games, Game Freak decided to include some additional references to American cultural icons, with one being Pokestar Studios, Pokemon’s version of Hollywood in its prime. Only, since Unova is based on New York, I guess they moved out of California all the way over to the East coast.
Tumblr media
Pokestar Studios is a pretty interesting side attraction to the main game shenanigans, since the player can participate as an actor in various movie sets, engaging in Pokemon battles more as preset puzzles than monster fighting. Using rental Pokemon, you’ve got to follow a script, and know when’s the right time to make certain moves, take falls, or wait around for your next cue, with dialogue choices in between, all with the goal of making the best crowd-pleasing box office success. While it is pretty straightforward, and the use of rental acting Pokemon makes most of the puzzles pretty simple, I did always enjoy this alternative to the regular gameplay loop, and how much depth it was given. What’s really special is that you can use your own Pokemon when reshooting a completed movie, and if you’re clever enough can even find secret hidden endings that will make your movie an infamous cult classic, and make your Pokemon a well-known movie star.
What makes Pokestar Studios noteworthy enough for a Bonus Article though, is that the opponents you fight in movies aren’t limited to just other human trainers and Pokemon. Even the fantastical world of Pokemon needs some fictional movie monsters in their theaters, and some of them get pretty out there compared to the usual Pikachu and Charizard. Since Game Freak isn’t likely to give them any attention anytime soon, I thought it was worthwhile to shed some light on these lesser known official Pokemon creations.
Black Door & White Door
Tumblr media
Starting off strong with these two magical doors, opponents from a medieval fairy tale style movie. Specialized opponents like these are usually represented with just a green screen prop during the actual recording session, but once the movie is completed they’re replaced with what is presumably CGI. That’s kinda funny.
The Black and White Doors are Grass and Fire types respectively, strangely enough. I really enjoy how multilayered their designs are, how behind the central lock and chains you can see shadowy eyes and a thick-lipped smile and big yellow teeth on the main door. It definitely has the feeling of some grimdark fairy tale monster to it.
The weird snakes coiling around the pillars and gripping the chains are pretty charming too, I love their toothy overbites and protruding eyes. Strangely enough, they share a strong resemblance to Applin, a Pokemon from all the way forward in Generation Eight. They share the same eyes and serpentine bodies, so I wonder if the connection was even considered by the devs or if this is just a happy coincidence. Either way, both the snakes and doors are pretty fun.
Tumblr media
The ‘trainer’ that uses both doors is also a gatekeeper represented by a giant Substitute doll. Now that’s a real bummer, people are already begging for the Substitute doll to be the inspiration for a real Pokemon, and here’s a lovely giant plush toy sprite and everything. Just look at that excess stitching and exposed fluff. It would’ve been a great Normal/Ghost type.
MT & MT2
Tumblr media
Of course, since Tyranitar is Pokemon’s version of Godzilla, Pokemon’s Hollywood has to go an make a series of movies with a Mechagodzilla too. MT, obviously short for Mecha Tyranitar, is a well designed robot counterpart to the Rock/Dark type we all know. I appreciate with how intricately it’s detailed, without appearing too complex. All the metallic seams and rivets are great, and I like how all the joints on its limbs and tails are defined and visible. Vents appearing to reside in Tyranitar’s weird chest cavities are a good touch too.
MT2 has a sick coloration too. I wish that was reflective of Shiny Tyranitar’s palette. If they were to ever change it one day, I’d like for it to be black and red like this one.
F-00
Tumblr media
Awww, now this one really stinks. There aren’t enough fully mechanical Pokemon as there should be, and this adorable little toy robot would be an EXCELLENT addition to the roster. It’s so obviously designed to be cutesy, but in just the right ways. I really enjoy its LED screen face, and the little heartbeat monitor on its chest. The superfluous screw on top of its head is a classic touch too.
But THEN, it also has a big, broken, malfunctioning form that makes everything ten times better. If this wasn’t a robot, it’d be one of the most gory designs out there. Just look at it, all its limbs are stretched apart with exposed, torn wires, and its whole facial screen is hanging out of the head. I really enjoy how broken and malformed this thing is, and to make matters better it’s only an alternate form to the cute robot. So, if it were an available Pokemon, both would be equally available to players rather one being locked to a stronger evolution.
Tumblr media
What GIVES. Why reserve such a nice design to a one-game minigame feature, one where you can’t even use it, huh??? Some super fan of F-00’s movies out there really needs to get to creating it in real life for future Pokemon trainers to catch and use on their journeys. Just look at that great curved posture in that malfunctioning portrait. What a TEASE.
Invaders
Tumblr media
There’s an Alien Invasion movie series as well, and features a bunch of beehive hairdo-wearing feminine aliens invading a major city in giant Cascoon-like UFOs. It’s interesting to try and read into the interpretation that the creatives in the Pokemon universe would try to base an extraterrestrial ship off an insect cocoon of all things, even if I don’t know exactly what to glean from it. The sprite is really excellently drawn though, like wow. Look at all those futuristic lines and glowing screens. The sheen across the top of the shell is really well done too. Great job, guys.
The metallic womanly alien is nice too, and feels right out of a classic alien monster b-movie. I’m not an expert of anything but I feel like there was a trend for a while to make aliens seem metallic or robotic in nature, rather than slimy space freaks. Maybe it has to do with the fancy futuristic feel of chrome. Everything’s chrome in the future.
Old Statue
Tumblr media
These next two monsters come from a movie series called Ghost Eraser, where your character is tasked with finding people who have been possessed by spirits and cleansing them and capturing the lingering ghosts. Most people assume this to be a reference to Ghostbusters, and I could definitely see that considering the final antagonist of the movies. However, the director of all of them is credited as John Pokenter (ha), so who’s to say exactly.
Anyways, the first fully original monster is actually another weird ‘trainer,’ you never fight it directly since it instead commands a Golurk, but this Old Statue is another quite intricate and interestingly detailed design. I guess because the designers knew they never had to worry about accommodating for it becoming a Pokemon that would be drawn several times over by various artists, they didn’t hold back on how detailed their designs were. The weird, lopsided painted face is cool, as are the strange, ribbed anatomy it seems to have and goofy face. Of course special mention goes to the plasma ball it holds too. This would be an excellent, welcome addition to Pokemon’s set of ancient relics alongside Claydol and Golurk.
Majin
Tumblr media
Majin takes the role as Ghost Eraser’s final boss, making it Pokemon’s Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I like what it goes for, being a big, green smog demon covered in building debris and rebar. Remember from Garbodor’s review how appealing I find rebar anatomy, for some reason? Yeah. Maijin has various pipes covering its body too, which each expel puffs of smoke at various intervals, including with its nose. That’s goofy. I really like its jagged jack-o-lantern smile too. Definitely would be welcome among Pokemon’s roster.
It’s also a Dark/Ghost type ancient evil that used to be sealed in a relic, that being the previous Old Statue. I wonder if Maijin is some fictionalized version of Pokemon’s own Spiritomb considering their similarities. That’d be a neat little detail.
Humanoid & Monster
Tumblr media
Finally are these two monsters, from a horror movie series also by John Pokenter. Manifesting from an otherworldly fog gives us these two strange creatures, the lesser Humanoid and the Monster that commands them. The splotchy red and purple texture gives me the impression of these things having a claylike texture, molded together from various substances. The Humanoid even remains rooted to the ground, as if sprouting up from the muck. I like the stomach eye and how in its idle animation is sways around lazily, as if unable to stay upright or trying to poorly imitate a human posture. Definitely feels like an uncanny person lookalike that are popular in horror spheres nowadays.
Then here’s the big bad Monster, a weird fleshy nodule with several branching tentacles, seemingly connected to it like various roots stemming from its source. I’m quite a big fan of weird, meaty monsters acting like overgrown plant life as horror concepts, so this Monster does appeal to me well. It retains the weird purple splotches of the Humanoid, but with more clear swirls and patterns, which makes sense since this is likely the more well-defined ‘true’ form. That big, wide eye is great too. A real sick design, and I’d love to be able to use something so alien and unusual alongside the rest of Pokemon’s roster, but alas…
Tumblr media
I’ll wrap things up there, and while Pokestar Studios does have a couple other unique opponents to battle, these were the ones I felt most noteworthy of discussion. Once again, it’s a great shame that all of these interesting and unorthodox designs ended up being thrown to the wayside, forgotten and tucked away in a side activity unlikely to ever be referenced in the series again. The way that they break from Pokemon norms is what makes them so enticing, but also would explain why they’ve never returned. As I said earlier, they were likely designed with that in mind. Knowing that these designs would never get used again, the artists went all out and didn’t hold back by usual restrictions. I guess my main point is that it’s sad seeing what they’re capable of but usually can’t achieve. I love a lot of preexisting Pokemon of course, but seeing the more out-there official designs still does raise my curiosity on what more Could Be. If that makes sense. Ah well, that’s enough time spent in Hollywood for one article.

I have done the Worst Possible Pokemon Day prediction. I have done the NO Way in Hell Will it Ever be This Good prediction. Time for the "realistic" prediction.
Nostalgia bait video of game progression throughout the years or scene of everyone playing Pokémon
Pokemon Go is doing a thing I guess, probably BW2 Kyurem
Unite- they're adding Miraidon and have already told us, but they need to take up time.
Masters has a bunch of gems and events idk. Looks like someone is getting a Mega Tyranitar I guess
Cafe ReMix is gonna do a thing- did they already add Miraidon? I don't keep up with it tbh, looks boring
Pokemon Sleep has some kind of thing. Maybe more pokemon added?
Merch announced- its bland and over priced, but someone will buy it. The only thing I want are hats
Pokemon Concierge season 2 trailer?
Next Pokémon game- most likely ILCA Unova remakes (I'll argue this if I have to, but they're just short of a cowboy and large mole driving a car and honking a Driftveil inspired La Cucaracha carhorn through the streets of New York with the obvious hints they're dropping in games and in literal NYC right now lately).
Legends Unova or something in that vein announced for either December 2024 or January 2025. This will be the last Switch mainline game.
Music video, probably Hatsune Miku
Less likely to happen, but on the table
Gb, GBC, and GBA ports to eshop or NSO
New Pokémon movie announcement featuring the first mythical since Zarude- most likely the Horizons cast
Something about Horizons anime- Sprigatito evolves?
New anime mini series based on SV DLC? Maybe centered on Carmine, Kieran, the BBE4, and Ogerpon.
After that is where you start getting surprises, good or bad. Side games won't replace a mainline game release or dlc as proven by PMD DX, so they could do whatever from here.
Reasonable but random predictions, not all but maybe one or more could happen, most likely not
PMD Explorers Remake
PMD Mobile game with micro transactions and live service
Pokemon crosses over with something
tcg digital card game on Switch
Pokemon racer game
Will not Happen, imo:
SV dlc pack 2. They seem pretty done with it tbh, even with all the loose ends. Can't blame them for being tired of adding content to a broken game that's still not finished and is being held together with scotch tape and Elmer's glue
Johto re remakes YET: simply because I think those will be an early Switch 2 title to get as many people on board the next system akin to how LGPE drew in the Go, genwunner, and main crowd to the Switch, and they can't announce it because Nintendo hasn't officially revealed the Switch 2 yet. I'll say they'll announce that next year.
Kalos- yeah I see you there, you dumb bastard, still huffing that Kalos Copium 11 years later. Let it go, man. Let. It. Goooo. Southern Kalos is NOT happening dude. At least, not this gen. It didn't happen in Alola, not in Galar, and it's not happening in Paldea. They're not skipping gen 5 to get to you first.
Overall I expect a similar response to the 2021 Pokémon Day Presents. A mixture of under, over, and straight up whelmed. Thorough disappointment for everything but Legends Arceus, from what I remember. Maybe they'll make my day and surprise me with something amazing, but I feel that the ILCA Unova Remake will probably piss a lot of people off while the Legends game excites me and everyone else.

My theory on the upcoming paradox DLC legendaries for Scarlet and Violet
So, if you’re reading this, that means you may or may not have seen what 2 of the 3 upcoming paradox pokemon look like. They both look like the fusions of both of their respective trios. A trio from Johto and a trio from Unova. But who could possibly be this 3rd pokemon that we haven’t seen yet?
On the surface, it’s easy to say that it is the 3rd legendary representing present time, since Koraidon and Miraidon represent the past and future respectively. A lot might say that it’s Cyclizar but that has already been debunked by the developers saying that it isn’t a pre-evolution to either. Plus, it’s WAY too common to be a legendary considering we see them running around in the wild and we also see NPCs use them to get to places. But it could be another pokemon resembling Cyclizar but doesn’t evolve from it (or maybe it will, who knows?). I mean it’s not the first time that a legendary is related to a common pokemon, look at Diancie and Carbink. Despite their similarities, Carbink doesn’t evolve into Diancie. How Diancie got the way she is is because of a Carbink undergoing a mutation according to the lore. Maybe the same will happen with Cyclizar.
But I propose an alternate possibility. Remember how I briefly touched upon how one of the paradox pokemon looks like a fusion of a trio from Unova? Well, what if I told you that they aren’t the only possible trio to fuse?
Does anyone remember the Great Dragon from Gen 5? Because if you don’t, then allow me to refresh your memory. The Great Dragon is said to be what the Tao Trio (Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem) used to be. They only split apart because of the beliefs of the two princes of Unova believed their country SHOULD be: Truth or Ideals. Reshiram and Zekrom fought while the empty husk that remained became Kyurem.
So basically, what I’m trying to get at is that The Great Dragon is a paradox pokemon. And I have some evidence to back this up.
Evidence:
-We never got an actual name for this pokemon, what this pokemon’s real name is.
-’The Great Dragon’ sounds like a name for a paradox pokemon. All of the paradox pokemon have names, with the exception of Koraidon and Miraidon, that are just pronouns in front of nouns. (For example, GREAT Tusk, SCREAM Tail, IRON Treads, etc.)
-And to top it all off, we have never seen what this pokemon looks like. The closest we’ve ever got were Kyurem’s two forms: Black Kyurem and White Kyurem. So the name would probably be Gray Kyurem, but that can just be applied to how Kyurem looks normally.
-To add onto the previous point, it is possible for a paradox pokemon to be a fusion of 2 or more pokemon. Look at Iron Valiant, who I jokingly referred to as what a possible hermaphroditical fusion for the Ralts line would look like in my previous post.
-Plus the Great Dragon would probably represent balance, as the Yin and Yang symbol (which is what the Tao Trio are partially based on), not just in black and white, but I guess in time itself as well.
But if any of this turns out to be true, as cool as it would seem, it probably wouldn’t make much sense lorewise. Such as if the Great Dragon is this 3rd edition, then that would imply that Koraidon and Miraidon have ties to Unova, which they don’t based on both names and design. And I’m pretty sure New York and the Iberian peninsula have little to nothing to do with each other, aside from immigrants moving there and there’s bits of spanish culture in there too. Also, if the paradox fusion the resembles the swords of justice is indeed a fusion, then why did the games never say that the swords used to be a single entity? Come to think of it, the same principle can apply to the paradox fusion resembling the legendary beasts.
The legendary beasts were already said to have been created by Ho-Oh, when it resurrected 3 dead pokemon in a fire in the brass tower. Origins Generations already debunked the theory that it’s the first 3 eeveelutions. Maybe that story was just a cover up for what really happened and maybe it’s got something to do with this paradox pokemon. Just like with the Great Dragon’s name and design, these pokemon’s identities were never confirmed either.
To answer this is that maybe pokemon will retcon some things. I mean, it’s not the first time this has happened, look at pokemon types in general. There were 15 originally in the games, 16 if you count ‘???’. But after gens 2 and 6, there’s 18 and we never got an in-universe explanation as to where Steel, Dark, and Fairy come from. We are just led to believe that they simply, exist. And other example is that Pokemon used to have references to countries, cities, and other areas in the real world. Indian elephants are mentioned in some dex enteries, there was a dog, no not a dog pokemon, an actual pup in one of the posters, and then theres the Tunguska/Tiksi branches of Silph Co in FireRed and LeafGreen being references to Russia, among other examples. Heck, some of this was the backbone for the “Ash is in a coma” theory.
Heck, Kyurem’s origin was retconned as well. Originally believed to have come from an icy comet, but then it was changed to it have been the empty remains of what used to be the Great Dragon. But the whole story about an icy comet could be referring to how the dragon split and not how Kyurem got there by itself.
But there is one thing that I know that possibly might tie the Tao Trio to the Paradox duo and it’s the fact that dinosaurs and reptiles are part of their inspiration. Though for Miraidon, it’s only in name because of the suffix being Greek for tooth. Also, contrary to popular belief but lizards did NOT evolve from dinosaurs, they just happened to have the same common ancestor. Pretty much the same as how we didn’t evolve from chimps, we just share the same ancestor. Also, both Koraidon and Reshiram look feathery, whereas Zekrom and Miraidon aren’t.
And like I said, despite how it may seem contradictory, retcons happen just to try and make it make sense. And yeah, in terms of stories, it’s difficult to fit something new into what’s already been established without it having to break the rules. But that’s just how it is with storytelling. Plus, Pokemon is confirmed to be a multiverse, so everything both does and doesn’t make sense. And plus, it wouldn’t be the first time Unova predicted something. Look at how Iron Thorns looks like the Mecha Tyranitar from Pokestar Studios in BW2.
So, what do you think? Was there something I missed? If so, put it in the comments and I hope you enjoyed.
Edit: I mistakeningly put Origins instead of Generations. Generations showed us what happened in the brass tower, not Origins. Origins is based on Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, and some bits of the Let’s Go games are in there. And by “bits”, I mean mega evolution. Sorry about that.

I like to think that since Unova is based on New York, they're the only region (that we know of so far) that celebrates American holidays. (Also fun fact that I learned way too late but Kalos is based off France, which is pretty obvious now that it's been pointed out to me!)
I also feel like the Striaton Trio's favorite holiday would be Thanksgiving just because it's an excuse to cook all day.

Ace Anon
As soon as I learned that you were from Texas
I'm sorry
I have to break it to you
Ingo will straight fucking DIE with you. THE HEAT would KILL HIM.
UNOVA is based off of the northern part of United States. those temperatures doesn't got SHIT ON TEXAS.
Like he regularly has to jump back in the switch.
To Pearl Ice land because if he doesn't he will MELT and not in a good way.
(It is worth it though)
I mean, possibly??? At least might kill Warden Ingo, but I dunno. Like, it can get pretty hot and humid in New York too, especially these past few years. Apparently like, regularly in the 90s-100s right now??? BUT since it’s warden Ingo, he probably would have to get used to it. I think he would also probably want to take you back to the switch. Why suffer here in the heat when you can just chill with him at his home until it’s evening and only 80 something instead of 100+ during the day? Come on, dear, it’s nice and cool in the mountains where he lives. He’ll make sure you stay comfortable :) If you insist on staying out of the switch though during the day, he’ll suck it up and try to get used to it. Just don’t get upset if he has to take breaks every so often! Though he does consider catching an ice type pokemon to help keep your house cool.

I thought Castelia was the pokemon world new york?
I'm doing some hard core googling to make sure; it's been MANY a year since I played the og Black and White games and their sequels and I'm just getting into the hyperfixation.
According to the wiki; Nimbasa has MORE inhabitants despite being the smaller of the two sister cities. So that's a fun fact to start us off.
Maybe Castelia is New York and Nimbasa is supposed to be the Manhattan Boroughs (a part of New York) Some articles say Nimbasa is supposed to be Coney Island due it's more of an entertainment district than the economic place of business.
'As Unova is based n New York City; It's possible that Nimbasa City is meant to represent coney Island-Coney Island has an amusement park and is home to the largest Subway in New York City'-Bulbpedia
SO I GUESS.
INGO AND EMMET ARE FROM CONEY ISLAND.

Pokémon Geography
I've been trying to figure out the placement of all the regions in Pokémon. Here are my ideas…
First let's define the hemispheres. We know the early Pokémon regions were based off Japan. They've also based regions off of Europe and the US. In my theorizing, I'm going to assume that all of the regions are at least vaguely on the same sides of the planet as their counterparts, meaning the American-like regions are west of the European-like regions, which are themselves west of the Japan-like regions. This is basically just my headcanon, but I think it is reasonable. So here we go…
We know through game and anime lore that Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are all next to each other. Kanto and Johto literally share a land border and it is implied that Sinnoh is just over the mountain range in the north. Hoenn is in the sea to the south of the other three, probably farther south than the Sevii and/or Orange Islands. I wonder what the fan consensus is about the Sevii and Orange Islands? Do they both exist? Are they two names for the same place? Do we politely pretend that one or the other doesn't exist and respectfully agree to disagree? Personally, I like to believe they both exist, with Sevii being closer to the Kantonese shore and the Orange Islands being off the coast of Johto.
We also know that Pokémon Island from the original Pokémon Snap has a ton of mons from Kanto, meaning it must be close. Fiore, Almia, and Oblivia from the Pokémon Ranger games are said to be a bit far away from Sinnoh at least, but not far away enough to have distinct mons of their own. Mons from the original four regions appear in those games, implying that they are at least in the same hemisphere. Maybe the Ranger regions are west of the original four, but not so far west as to run into Kalos? I dunno.
I think it is safe to say that the Far East of the Pokémon World consists of:
Kanto
Johto
Hoenn
Sinnoh
The Sevii and/or Orange Islands
Pokémon Island
Fiore
Almia
Oblivia
I speculate that west of these regions are the Near East regions, which are all based on European nations. Kalos likely shares it's southern border with Paldea, just as France and Iberia share a border. Galar, the Isle of Armor, and the Crown Tundra are probably close by. I find it interesting that Galar and Paldea both have dramatic meteor showers/crashes in their history at varying points, but Kalos doesn't. I don't really have any explanations - even headcanon - as to why. Where the Crown Tundra and Isle of Armor are in relation to Kalos and Galar are unclear. Is the Crown Tundra more like Iceland? Like Shetland? I don't know. Is the Isle of Armor more like Ireland, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands? If Paldea and Galar both get pummeled by meteors but Kalos doesn't, does that mean that Galar is closer to Paldea? Not sure.
I conclude with a reasonable amount of certainty that the Near East of the Pokémon World consists of the following, but I'm not as confident about their placements relative to each other:
Kalos
Paldea
Galar
Isle of Armor
Crown Tundra
Now we come to the Western Hemisphere. Unova is based on New York, Orre on Arizona, and Alola on Hawaii. Seems pretty reasonable to me that they'd be close to one another. Since Alola has regional variants of Kantonese mons, I think it must be placed the closest to the original four. This lines up with Hawaii being the closest American state to Japan. I feel like it is safe to conclude that Unova, Orre, and Alola are arranged geographically similar to their counterparts. Unova is west of the Near East regions, Orre is west of Unova, and Alola is west of Orre.
But then there's the Decolore Islands. It has a mix of Pokémon from the original four and Unova. So does that place it West or East of Unova? And what about Lental from New Pokémon Snap? It has mons from all over the map! Since Lental has Alolan mons and Alolan regional variants, it must be somewhat close to Alola, right?
Strong contenders for the Western Pokémon World:
Unova
Orre
Alola
Possibly Western, but may be between the West and Far East:
Lental
Could be between the West and Far East or West and Near East, it's anyone's guess:
Decolore Islands.
So that's what I have. What do you all think, fellow trainers? Do you like my theory? Have any suggested edits?

I've always figured /headcanoned unova is supposed to be the entirety of new york the State. so disney world just would not exist in unova it'd be like. pokemon Florida or whatever
I mean, I disagree solely due to the fact that they have their own Pokémon Hollywood there, which is like... in California. You're not entirely wrong, through, since Castelia City is pretty obviously based off of Manhattan and Nimbasa is New York City.

Pokémon Compass takes place in the Nexvie (NEX-vee) region. The name comes from the words Next, Nexus, Neck (as in neck of the woods), Vie (as in to vie for something), Betwixt, and XVI, the Roman numeral for sixteen. The region is based off of the mid-Atlantic United States. There are two reasons why I chose this place for a new region. First is that I live in the mid-Atlantic, and therefore feel qualified to talk about it. The second is that it will likely never be an actual region; NYC metro area (what Unova is based on) is mostly in the mid-Atlantic, meaning the rest of the area will never get an actual region. Since NYC is already covered, Nexvie is based off of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, South Jersey, Washington DC, Upstate New York and Long Island. The region is divided into sixteen subregions (hence the name) which will be named and explained later.

Ngl Jaiden's latest video got me interesting in both colosseum and XD. Especially since Orre is based off of Arizona, and since Unova is based on New York, I can't help but feel the two regions are close.
Especially since XD is a direct sequel to Colosseum, so now I'm like 👀.
The main problem is that I have no idea how to play these games. At all.

some guy on tt responding to the fact that black people exist in pokemon: uh, actually all the pokemon games are based on Japanese islands! there's no black people because it's only set in Japan. trust me! I'm a huge pokemon fan!
a reasonable person: one, you're incredibly stupid. even if you were right, black people still exist in Japan. but you're wrong. there hasn't been a new pokemon game set in a Japan based region since 2010. Unova is based off New York. Kalos is France. Alola is Hawaii. and Galar is the UK.
the stupid guy on tt: uh wow! I must be really old then. I haven't heard any of those regions! [crying laughing emoji laughing while sweating emoji]
the reasonable person: you haven't played a single pokemon game in over 12 years? how can you call yourself a fan?
the stupid guy on tt: wow. shut up asshole! I bet you like the Disney star wars movies!
the reasonable person: literally what in the fuck does that have to do with anything?

Generation Five Retrospective
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Generation 5 saw its release in 2010, releasing on the still active and highly successful Nintendo DS system, as Pokemon Black and White versions. They’d be sure to sell well, Pokemon never tends to come up short, but it’s possible the developers realized they couldn’t just reuse the same Pokemon format with the same sets of tried and true Pokemon and regional aesthetics. They’d technically be competing with themselves since Diamond and Pearl already existed on the system. So, Game Freak took a leap, and created a Generation almost wholly detached from the previous four.
Gen 5 as a whole was wildly unique for the time. Unova, its region, was the first in Pokemon’s main series to not be based on a region of Japan, and instead took its inspiration from New York City and its surrounding land, over in America. Gen 5 also saw the largest new introduction of Pokemon to date, a whopping 156, beating out even the original set of 151 from Gen 1. This was likely in part because Gen 5 restricted all available Pokemon during its main story to those new to the region, reserving all returning ‘mons for post-game areas and trainers.
Tumblr media
That isn’t even to mention all the changes brought about by Gen 5 as well. Gen 5 introduced Seasons, allowing the overworld to change dynamically based upon the month you were playing in. It finally allowed TMs, items used to teach Pokemon moves, to become infinite use rather than limited to their quantity. Pokemon sprites finally animated during battle continuously rather than just on entry. HM usage was drastically toned back compared to Gen 4. Routes and caves were overall more streamlined, making for easier traversal while still offering several side paths and secret areas for players to explore or revisit once progressing further in the game. Even the experience system was optimized, to give players more EXP based upon the next major boss opponent, and softly plateauing them from overleveling past that. Pokemon Black and White would even be home to Pokemon’s strongest narrative yet (in my opinion), driving most of the game’s playthrough beyond just the need to Be a Pokemon Master, and giving the player character some actual stake in the story and villainous team rather than just being a trainer who was in the right place at the right time.
Tumblr media
And man. People hated Gen 5 when it came out. Really, truly despised it. When I say ‘people,’ I mean extremely vocal old-school Pokemon fans online who played the games when they first released in Japan and had the benefit of driving most of the discussion before the rest of the world really got their hands on the games. What happened to old my old Pokemon, they decried. Where’s Pikachu and Charizard, how come all the new Pokemon are just bootleg repeats of old ones? Roggenrola? That’s just a worse Geodude! They seriously made a TRASH BAG and ICE CREAM Pokemon?! Man, Pokemon designers are creatively bankrupt. This game is awful.
Honestly I can’t fathom this mindset whatsoever. You can criticize Trubbish and Vanillite for ‘just’ being normal objects all you want, but that kind of thing has existed in literally every Pokemon generation. Geodude is just a rock, Sunflora is just a sunflower, Luvdisc is just a heart, Drifloon is just a balloon. And so what if Gen 5 has some repeated concepts among its roster? In real life there isn’t just one Horse or one Bat or one Stone. Pokemon like Roggenrola, Timburr, Woobat, Blitzle, and more follow similar ideas to their Gen 1 counterparts, but take them in different directions that helps flesh them out as more original, and often more creative, creatures. Roggenrola isn’t just a living rock, it’s an extreme troglobite that evolved without eyes and instead a central ear. Blitzle isn’t another flaming horse, but instead an electrical zebra, playing off the animal’s striped pattern, like how Ponyta may be a play on the term 'trailblazer.'
Even as a kid who grew up with Generations 2-4 before playing 5, I saw listings of the new Pokemon on sites like Serebii and were enamored by them, designs like Galvantula, Scrafty, and Chandelure instantly captivated me. Even seeing the conceptual repeats didn't bother me, because they were still new designs that were breaking the mold from the stuff that had been used for years prior. Gen 5 felt different. It felt fresh.
Tumblr media
I’m not the one who made this observation first, but I think the reason why people got so angry with this new Pokemon roster is that they were forced to use ‘mons they hadn't seen before, and couldn't fall back on familiar ones they understood. They couldn't just box whatever starter they were required to pick up and use a Gyarados and Pidgeot like they always had, and being forced to use new Pokemon made those players hate them just out of principle.
On one hand, I kinda get it, it may feel claustrophobic to have to use Pokemon you don't like because no other options exist. Personally though, this is more or less how I try to experience every Generation, at least the first time I play them. I want to at least give the new guys a chance to prove themselves, and on my first playthroughs I always use that Generation's newbies, and don't fallback on what I already know. After all, the rest of the Generation, its locations, its characters, and more are all new and unfamiliar, so why shouldn't the Pokemon be also? I'd love it if every new Generation was like Unova, forcing you to start fresh with all-new Pokemon, but such a philosophy would require a plethora of new design work to be done at Game Freak that just isn't practical with these games' rigid development paces. It makes Black and White all the more special, I guess.
Tumblr media
Even beyond just the new Pokemon, Gen 5 is great in nearly all its aspects. Unova sets itself apart from previous regions by its large, flashy urban expanses and varied landscapes, combining both Hoenn's strong suits and improving upon Kanto's larger cities. Something about Unova and Gen 5 as a whole still feels incredibly modern and up-to-date for me, even over a decade after its release. Maybe it's to do with several cities' fascinations with high-tech machinery and glowing neon lighting, or all the merchandise and promotional material using sleek hexagonal black-and-white grids as backdrops for all their art.
Gen 5's also where Pokemon's got its strongest story, in my opinion. As I previously mentioned it feels like the first time the player character actually matters to the narrative, even if they're still a silent protagonist that doesn't really give input on the events that happen. Still, your Pokemon journey is given a little more context and stakes, being that you've got to beat your main rival N - who also happens to be the ruler of the local villainous organization Team Plasma - from reaching the Pokemon League and becoming the Champion, and commanding trainers across the region to give up their Pokemon, separating the connections between people and Pokemon and making both groups as distant as the colors black and white - ha. I won't give an extremely detailed plot summary - these articles are supposed to be on Pokemon designs rather than the games as a whole - but I still think it deserved mention since, alongside the strength of the new designs, such large improvements on Pokemon's general presentation and content is what makes me like Gen 5 so much all these years later.
Tumblr media
Oh man, I didn't even get to Black 2 and White 2 yet, the first games since Gold and Silver to be direct sequels, and the first to be set in the same region. They add so much to to the Unovan experience, expanding the region with new locations and content, adding stuff like Pokestar Studios and the Pokemon World Tournament (where you can fight every previous Gym Leader and Champion in tourney brackets!!), adding old Pokemon back into the main game's areas, piling on even more post-game content to do after the credits roll, and a plethora of new and helpful UI and QoL changes. As I said before, these aren't meant to be gameplay critiques or anything, but at least come away from this article knowing that I think Black 2 and White 2 are the strongest games in the series by a wide margin.
With ALL THAT preamble out of the way, let's wrap things up in summation. Gen 5 is an extremely strong way to reinvigorate Pokemon's core style and aesthetic, and gave us a wide helping of unique, creative, and dynamic designs, and even those that retread on concepts already portrayed in the series, usually did so with a new angle or creative spark that helps them to stand separate. It was a great way to usher in a new 'era,' of Pokemon, and did an excellent job wrapping up the first, coincidentally also being the last Pokemon game portrayed in classic 2D.
I haven't tallied it up myself, but I think this Generation has the strongest density of S-B ranks of all Gens so far, wildly impressive considering its size.
My Personal Favorites
Tumblr media
Despite all my heaping praises for this Generation, picking my top six is actually pretty easy. Then again, that's due in part to just how much I've thought about it and how much I love all these little freaks, and the ones residing at the top of my list have remained unchanged for quite a while. The newest addition though is Eelektross, who I already like a good deal before writing the reviews but found a lot of new appreciation for once getting to its article. Honorable mentions also go out to Samurott (I still like Dewott better, sorry!), Jellicent, Volcarona, Reuniclus, Leavanny, and more. There were a ton of S Ranks this time around. I could honestly make a top twelve favorites if I really wanted to...
My All-Time Favorites
Tumblr media
And would you look at that! Wow! Four additions to my top 10! That's unprecedented! Gen 4 and even 3 only had an impact of three 'mons! Gen 5's just that good, I guess. I should mention, for the record, as time goes on my appreciation for Porygon-Z continues to grow, so consider it tied with Eelektross, just tucked off to the side out of frame.
My Black/White Team
Tumblr media
At least in the in-game playthroughs I can show some of my other favorites some love, so let's all give appreciation to the other star members that didn't get included in the Top 6. But wait - where are my other favorites?
My Black 2/White 2 Team
Tumblr media
There they are. Usually I don't include two separate teams depending on a game's slightly different versions, but Black/White 1 are pretty substantially different to Black/White 2, so I wanted to give both games some team compositions for fun.
The Coolest
Tumblr media
This was THE Generation for radical Dark types - they're even more chock-full of character and badass prowess than normal. Even besides those, you've got real slick heavy hitters like the scarred, sharp-bladed Excadrill and eerily beautiful Chandelure as well. Coolest Gen 5 'mons is another category I could do twice over, but I'll spare you the excess listings.
The Cutest
Tumblr media
Another tough contest. Most of these are pretty safe picks, I feel like anyone with a heart will agree on these guys' cuteness, but I also had to give Roggenrola a chance in the spotlight too. YES, I find the little rock pebble cute. Is that so WRONG.
The Most Creative
Tumblr media
All those no-fun fuddy-duddies who say Gen 5 is when Game Freak ran out of ideas clearly have no idea what they're talking about. I'm sorry the Nazca-line sentry drone and shedded-skin hoodlum lizard don't tickle your inspirational bone, maybe you just need to expand your palette or something.
Also yes, I put Garbodor on my list of most creative designs. I honestly think the idea of a shambling garbage monster with an exposed rebar skeleton and squirting nozzle-fingers is quite the interesting and special design, SORRY.
My Least Favorites
Tumblr media
I struggled to fill this one out. Besides Landorus and the monkeys, I had to go back and check what 'mons I really disliked. Pignite is kinda stretch, I'm perfectly willing to accept its existence but definitely wish it could've been better.
Also yeah, sorry elemental monkey fans, I'm still not big on them. It's nice that you like them, I'm glad they have their fans. Still not for me though.
Gen 5 in a Nutshell
Tumblr media
In my mind, Gen 5 has several iconic Pokemon, but I think when you really get down to the nitty gritty and consider all the advertising and promotional material, these are the six that best represent what this region's got on offer, and all six are pretty strong, noteworthy designs. They've got everything, from impressive elegance, to cute charm, and appealing cool factors. And Trubbish, who's there because it's delightful and what everyone thinks of when Gen 5 comes up in discussion. I'm NOT saying Gen 5 is trash. I LIKE Trubbish and do honestly think it represents the region's feel, in a way.
Gen 1 Parallel Hall of Fame
Tumblr media
For better or for worse, as I've stated a dozen times before, Gen 5 is well known for its repeat of Gen 1 concepts and ideas, but most of the time the end product is a pretty charming and interesting retooling of the core idea. Seen above are the six I feel do the best jobs with the ideas they're revisiting. I wouldn't say all of them are explicitly superior to their originals, but all are at least successful at standing apart and being unique, fresh designs based on old concepts.
Tumblr media
Well, that does it then. Gen 5's all wrapped up and finished. It felt nice revisiting all these designs, putting into words what I really loved about all my favorites, and finding what I appreciated from the more unlikely specimen. I really do think Gen 5 is the best Pokemon's ever gotten... which also means that it's kinda all downhill from here. Oops. It's not all bad, the next two Generations have got some real good stuff I'm looking forward to talking about. So, always... stay tuned! There's always more where this comes from.
