How a typical scenario with Bakugo and Class 1A would go in cannon

Note: I thought this scenario was kinda funny in my head because judging by how everyone acts with each and around Bakugo, something like this would happen in the main series. If Bakugo is going to constantly have toddler like tantrums and get physical with someone(Ex. Blowing up the dorm and a card game after getting a tie in a match with Deku/ Attacking Deku immediately after he congratulates Bakugo for getting his provisional license/ Throwing his sharp headgear at Deku causing him to bleed), then he would definitely do this. Anyway feel free to add your introspection. Normally Bakugo would have a hissy fit over something that is either petty, stupid or outrageous to fuel his inferiority complex so let’s say that he got mad for getting the second highest score on a test.

How this scene would play out is that class 1A would get their results of a test they took. Bakugo would get pissed because that he got the second highest score meanwhile Momo Yaoyorozu got the first highest. While Momo keeps her pride to herself, Bakugo would make a baseless claim the she is making fun of him. So Bakugo would proceed to attack Momo out of jealousy.

- Momo would be in a lot of pain from taking an explosion to the face

- Jiro, Kaminari, Mina, Sero, Tsuyu and Ida would get pissed and try to intervene but it probably won’t amount to anything

- Deku would probably try to intervene but Bakugo find an excuse to fight him

- Uraraka would direct her attention to Deku if he got attacked by Bakugo; ignoring Momo’s condition

- Mineta would make another perverted comment

- Todoroki wouldn’t do anything in this scenario(Good luck Todomomo fans)

- Sato and Tokoyami would just comment on how Bakugo’s attitude is ridiculous and not do anything else

- Kirishima would probably stand up against Bakugo while at the same time convince the others that his actions are reasonable

- Aoyama, Hagakure, Ojiro, Shouji and Koda would keep to themselves and not intervene

- Aizawa would harshly punish all of Class 1A and give Bakugo a light punishment

In layman’s terms, All hell would break loose.

Izakaya Kamenoya, part 2

Last week, I did a post on the Izakaya Kamenoya, the favorite watering hole of the Gotei-13 middle management, and I promised you a follow-up with interior shots for everyone who, like me, immediately wanted to incorporate it into their fanfic.

So, here's the entrance!

It appears to have a big main room, with a bar on one side, and tables lined up in a row on the other.

Note: I am obsessed with the shihakushou-wearing bartender. Is the Seireitei a Kurt Vonnegut's Player Piano scenario, where you need to get a degree in soul-reaping just to tend bar? Is this an officer's bar, staffed by unseated people (which sort of defeats the point of separate bars where you can get get drunk and talk smack about your subordinates) Or is the bar a co-op of some sort, and this guy just pulled mixologist duty this week?

There are also private rooms! Kyouraku and Amagai get one in 172, and then they seem to have the same one when they come back with Ukitake in 179. I think it's kind funny that they don't have sword racks or something? Kyouraku's got his propped against the wall, and Amagai's are on the floor. I think Ukitake left his at home. More evidence that you are, in fact, allowed to carry your zanpakutou in the court as long as you don't draw it, in times without a wartime exemption.

Kira and Hisagi seem to have a very similar, if not the same room in episode 305, although theirs is plastered with ads. I wonder if this is like the "Kindle with Special Offers" where it's cheaper if you take the room with flyers and Kira and Hisagi are nothing if not broke.

The lady lieutenants get a private room for their zanpakutou spirit going-away party, as well. I can't really tell if their room is bigger, or if Amagai and Kyouraku just have a lot more space in theirs. I imagine they probably have a couple different sizes of private rooms at different cost levels.

Speaking of cost levels! Rukia and Renji appear to have an entirely different private room in Episode 355! It's got cool patterned paper in the fusuma (or maybe those are supposed to be paintings of mountains?) They've got a much fancier live-edge table. If you go by counting tatami, this room does seem to be a little bigger. The shouji has a solid panel at the bottom-- Wikipedia tells me that this is called a kōshi, and is to protect against the door getting wet or kicked, so I almost wonder if this opens to the outside. Does Izakaya Kamenoya have a garden? Outdoor drinking for the summer? Also, I think it's notable that most people tend to show up in their work clothes, but Rukia and Renji have clearly dressed up for their Private Room at the Chili's Date.

The question is: is this Kamenoya's Deluxe Room for People with Kuchiki Money, or did they upscale sometime in the 17-month timeskip? Does...does the Seireitei have gentrification?

Fortunately, Izakaya Kamenoya makes one more appearance in the my favorite fanfic, the end credits to Episode 366, proving that, thank goodness, it is still an affordable drinks location where you can go get ripped and sob about your boss.

Anymore ‘Izuku with a different quirk’ scenarios?

Hmmmm…. yep.

For this one, he had a quirk that’s a mutation of his parents and is similar to one of his great-great grandparents. Like Mt. Lady, his quirk is gigantification, only he can grow to any size he wants rather than only one

Course, the drawback is a speedy metabolism, so he and Momo casually talk in between stuffing their faces

Also, BakuDeku because soft&feral!Katsuki getting carried by his giant boyfriend

Mt. Lady’s sort of been an inspiration for him since her debut when he was in junior high. She actually scared off a couple of his bullies once. And he inspired her to be a better hero and not for publicity and fame

Even with his quirk, he was still tormented because I refuse to give him a break, but Katsuki kept the assholes at bay and eventually became his boyfriend

While Izuku tolerated the bullying, he went ballistic if anyone talked badly about Katsuki. He may or may not have ripped a row of lockers off the wall and threw it at someone

Katsuki: *Blushing* Damn, I love that nerd.

The students of Class 1A never would have guessed that Katsuki was dating Izuku. It took most of them a few weeks to even figure it out. Momo, Kyoka, Fumikage, Mina, Mashiraou, Shouji, Tsuyu, and Shouto could quickly tell during the first week

Izuku: People only think that because he was punished by Zeus, who is the worst person ever in Greek mythology. So, that ‘punishment’ was probably just Zeus being a jerk as usual.

Oh, and Neito’s got a thing for tall guys, so when Katsuki’s not around, that’s when he goes to make his move on Izuku, who assumes Neito is just being nice

His Yuuei uniform, gym uniform, and hero uniform are all made from his DNA so that they all grow with him

Whenever he sees Mineta leering at any female students, Izuku grows to his giant size and flicks him into one of the walls. No one bats an eye and Aizawa pretends he didn’t see anything

Mineta: Aizawa Sensei! Midoriya flicked me again!

Aizawa: *Sipping his coffee* Did someone hear something?

Mt. Lady immediately likes him when she sees him at the Sports Festival

When he’s up against Hitoshi, he just picks him up by the back of his gym uniform and moves him out of bounds, but he didn’t stand a chance against Shouto, who just trapped him in a giant ice block

Katsuki is prone to jealousy in case you can’t tell. When it’s not Neito, it’s his classmates ogling Izuku while he’s bench pressing a sixteen wheeler in Gym Gamma

Izuku: C’mere. *Picks Katsuki up* You know no one’s taking me away from you, right?

Katsuki: … Yeah. Just kiss me, nerd.

what would you say are horikoshi's biggest strengths as a writer and what are his greatest weaknesses?

ooh that's a really good question that i've had to think a lot about. it's difficult cuz while i've read his tenko oneshot and the original my hero oneshot, i haven't read his other two multi-chapter works (oumagadoki zoo and barrage) (though i have seen the raw scans of his other oneshot shinka rhapsody thanks to @codenamesazanka). boku no hero academia is obviously his work i'm most familiar with, and it's difficult to use mostly that as a metric for his skills overall.

on the other hand, bnha lasts for so much longer than his other works and is also so much more recent, so it's the main work that has to show off how growth or lack thereof as a writer, as well as his biggest challenges due to how punishing the manga industry can be and how it would have forced him into situations he may not have experienced with his past works. so in a way, bnha kind of has to be judged a biiit separately from the rest?

anyways with those caveats aside. his greatest strength is always and forever his art, which in manga is at least half of the writing. he has this special little touch with physicality and emotion that like. it's hard to describe how exactly it's different from other artists, who are also often great with physicality and emotion! but horikoshi's art often has that extra bit of weight to it that really sells it to me.

like i've said previously, i also think that he does have a knack for character writing that shines best when he's working with complicated, rough around the edges characters who aren't straightforward goody-two-shoes. shigaraki and bakugou i've already said are great examples of this. endeavour can get more difficult to talk about in this context due to the baggage around him, but i'd maintain that a lot of the series best writing does go to him, shouto, and the rest of the todoroki plotline (although it struggled a bit at the end there). twice, while ultimately a really nice guy, is still a very complicated criminal who gets theeeeee best development in the series. obviously there's toga, normal cute girl of all time.

a lot of that extends to horikoshi's affection for his minor/side characters as well. while i don't think he always nails it with integrating them into the story (fucking shouji. also vigilantes honestly did parts of this better), he does obviously put a lot of thought into them even when he doesn't get to use it. this is part of why i adore spinner so much, because he's that very typical minor side character who could easily be written out but instead gets a fleshed out and evocative role of his own.

i also think that horikoshi has a really strong instinct and potential for great horror/horrific material. again, this is where shigaraki proves himself horikoshi's best character - everything from his initial character design with the hands, the hints and insinuations about his backstory dropped over the first and second acts, all culminating in the beautifully gruesome shimura family massacre that just hits every single fuckin time. i honestly think it's one of the greatest payoffs in the series, basically bar none. (i know people try to give that title to the dabi reveal, but i keep getting taken out by how abrupt that particular instance is) it's the horror moments that make his art especially shine, he comes up with great scenarios, and honestly when he mentioned wanting to try his hand at a horror work after bnha i'm like, all in.

but that kind of segues into my biggest criticism of his writing - he holds back. he gets meek, he doesn't go all in. he had some interview where he admitted that the yakuza arc took a lot out of him because of how dark it got,

this extends to the entire series, especially in how the third arc has shaken out. deku and all might are really big victims of this, where there is absolutely a lot of complex development and criticism you can do with the way their characters are set up, but the story backs down from that to go "well maybe they're just. too heroic sometimes. self-sacrificing. that's an issue right." the 'dark deku' arc is a joke because while deku does extend himself beyond his limits, he never gets to the point of causing real harm to himself and those around him before class 1a swoops in.

i also have my conspiracy theories about hawks and how the fallout of his murdering twice was soooooo weak, where i think the popularity of hawks and his status as a hero scared horikoshi off of doing anything more critical with him, instead feeding that overwrought backstory as a distraction and giving the whole "government sponsored murderer who is wracked with guilt and bitter about the hypocrisy" to nagant. who again he didn't go hard enough with because then deku would have like, something outside of shigaraki to actually deal with. and would have to question the society that he's protecting. whatever.

he's also been so half-assed with the critique and deconstruction of hero society that he's set up, only to hastily and clumsily reconstruct it because superheroes are too cool to reeeaaaaaally say anything about, and also hero society has too many parallels with real life modern society, which might be awkward to critique in a youth magazine meant to satisfy as broad an audience as possible.

and then there's the heteromorph arc. goddamn the heteromorph arc. if you follow me you've probably read this but @stillness-in-green's conclusive write up of heteromorph discrimination as it's been laid out throughout the story and how that arc failed, which i think really signifies either the ways that horikoshi doesn't dig as deep into the concepts he brings up as he should, or doesn't realize how deep he needs to go with them.

i don't know if part of the way that horikoshi holds back or lands on the most boring resolutions for some of the ideas the story brings up is in part due to not wanting to rock the boat culturally, if he doesn't want to accidentally turn readers away after he's worked so hard to get to where he is now as a mangaka, or if it's the workload wearing him down, but it leaves the story half-formed.

i also think his other greatest weakness, which is a brutal one for shonen, is that he kind of fucking sucks at interesting fight scenes. like how much stuff ends with deku giving a big punch. it is my honest and greatest opinion that it should have been iida fighting muscular and uraraka fighting stain either alongside or in place of deku - their characters just had so much more to gain there. but i can also imagine all the fanboys who only care about power stats sneering and asking what iida and uraraka could have possibly done, which i think really speaks to a lack of creative thought not just in the fanbase, but in the writer. horikoshi can spin up all these cool and unique powers, but struggles to do anything really engaging with them. given that shonen fight scenes double as big character moments, it leaves a lot to be desired. big punches can only be inspiring so many times.

anyways. there's probably a lot more i can say. but that involves retreating more of the story than i am willing to do so right now. so alas.

I wanted to say that Izuku attainting OFA was a good idea, because Izuku's quirkless nature should have helped him understand Hero society in a different light unlike his classmates with few exceptions (Shouji, Shoto, etc.) who take the status quo for granted. But Hori can't stop whitewashing Bakugo's actions towards Izuku, this never gets explored to Izuku's detriment. Not to mention AM past being quirkless, how much did OFA warp his perspective before Izuku reminded him again about the true meaning of being a hero.

If I had my way, I would have Izuku have little to no struggle mastering OFA, of course build up his strength overtime. But Izuku would be the OverDog, someone powerless thrusted with an immense power. Kind of like One Punch Man only more dramatic because a teenager with mental issues and heroic nature effectively has the power of Superman. Now Izuku would have to ask himself some serious questions about what kind of hero he wants to be and why. Does fighting as a hero mean upholding hero society for all its flaws or does it need to be teared down for something better. How much is a hero still a hero before he is a vigilante or even a revolutionary? Which should be a good lesson for kids and young adults reading this story, because it's not enough to covet an important position of power like Naruto wanting to be Hokage, Luffy being the Pirate King or being Number 1 hero but what are you going to do after attainting this position? They need to understand the burden of responsibility rather then putting a fancy title on their resume.

But Hori wasted this opportunity by having Izuku as the fake underdog, struggling with mastering OFA as his main focus in the story. Izuku spent his time worried about mastering OFA rather then thinking about the flaws and ways to fix things. Its also a waste of world building potential because if Izuku is self-reflective like he supposed to be, then he could have been sympathizing with villains or view certain heroes as no different than bullies like at his middle school. Suddenly what was once black and white has become grey, even All-Might can't give him any good answers because the Hero Society he has built is the legacy that he fought so hard for and doesn't see anything wrong with it yet. We could have disagreements between Izuku and All-Might about these issues and what kind of purpose should OFA be about before and after AFO was revealed to be alive and ready for revenge.

This is why I hate the Quirkless Hero Izuku stories because the way Hero society is structured, it would never have allowed for Izuku to succeed in the first place. Eraserhead would have expelled him, schools would firmly reject him and people would just laugh at him for being arrogant to think he could provide any value in the field besides his smarts which could be suited elsewhere.

A quirkless Izuku would require a change of personality and plot armor for him to prevail. These stories become all about the Struggle rather then how twisted and unfair the system. Even compensating with technology devalues Izuku's character because he loves studying quirks! It makes him a great leader helping him bulid teams for the right scenario and placing value in everyone's quirk no matter how useless or villainous it may be. Having technology to compete with quirks would become impossible without changing the setting entirely.

A quirkless Izuku would also seem self-centered at this point because yes he wants to be a hero, but he could be a Police officer or firefighter to satisfy his heroic impulses. It could even be a point in the original story, which is partly why i think many people still feel that frustrated about this subject because Hori failed or was reluctant to explore this topic with Izuku and covers for Bakugo's BS. Man I sound like a broken record, it always leads back to Bakugo lol.

I definitely agree with the first half.

With the second half, I think a quirkless hero would definitely work, but you’d also have to place limits on what can be achieved. As a hero, Izuku would be street level. Think Batman, DareDevil, and Punisher. He wouldn’t go after people that can shatter buildings with a punch. He’d go after people running drug cartels and involved with gang activity. About 85% of people in the MHA world would die to some bloke with a gun, so have him fight those people instead of the ones that can’t. He doesn’t have to be a line light hero because that was never his goal to begin with. He just wanted to help people. He can also use technology to fight people since the tech in MHA is extremely advanced, but keep in mind that Izuku doesn’t have the funds to create all the things he might want to, so he’d have to stick with some more basic stuff until he can afford the materials to build something better.

Summary: During the sports festival, a General Education student loses his gloves. He ends up using his Quirk on Midoriya Izuku. While not a bad thing, given they are allowed to use their Quirks right then, it's not the best thing either given what his Quirk is. Matchmaker has anyone he touches being compared with anyone they have already met in order to show their potential partners.

It's just his luck that Midoriya Izuku has a lot of people he's compatible with. As in 23 people in total.

Since I had been asked about what I’d do after the Heroes Rising fic ends, I thought I should bring back that idea list I made a while back which shows what kind of fics are on the horizon ^^

1. A Midoriya-focused one shot that takes place between the Overhaul & Cultural Festival arcs. It will basically take the place of the missed Overhaul fight since, by having Mirio defeat Overhaul, I made Midoriya miss out on some needed development that I wanted to go back and provide.

2. A two shot that basically covers the TABF version of the EA arc. I won’t directly cover everything that happens with Midoriya during his internship but stuff will get mentioned and we’ll see what Fortune is doing while that’s going on.

3. A Big Three focused three shot (See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil)

4.  A one shot that gives attention to Mineta, Shouji, Satou, Kouda, & Ojiro and shows Mineta trying to learn how to be popular from watching the other boys.

5. A one shot focused on Jirou, Hagakure, & Asui where they and Fortune uncover a bomb threat and using their combined skillset to gain more information from the villains to stop the bomb before it can go off.

6. The next A Special Bond update which will focus on Aizawa & Fortune getting stranded in a forest during a storm. Basically a them vs nature scenario haha

7. A one shot focused on Hawks & Tokoyami. I’m not sure about the plot yet but I’m thinking Fortune gets a tour of the area from Hawks while a protective Tokoyami/Dark Shadow keep an eye on him lol

8. A one shot focused on Koichi. Considering how Vigilantes looks like it’ll end, I think I’d have him invited to be a guest teacher at UA for the day so the students can meet him. 

9. A one shot related to the UA Traitor plot. As I said before, this plotline will be way more subdued than in canon since I don’t plan on it being a huge reveal cause that’s just not necessary considering how things turn out in TABF as compared to canon.

10. Multi-chap WHM fic which I will get started on once the DVD releases since I haven’t had much luck with online videos

Mahou Shouji ni Akogarete (2024 anime)

Picking a screencap was so fucking hard because it's wall-to-wall golden lines and perfect expressions

MahoAko is nuts in numerous ways, from how well it fits so much into 13 episodes without feeling like anything's missing to completely defying everything I thought I had grasped about Japanese TV regulations for sexual content. It bounces along introducing characters and having delightful dynamics and constant fun interactions while also luxuriating over a wide array of ecchi shots and fetish scenarios framed around a typical magical girl ensemble, only our focus point is their antagonist, that precious fluffy little ball up there and her rampaging sadistic love for magical girls. It does all of it and never feels like a second's wasted.

The dialogue's fucking funny near-constantly too, from Utena and company being different varieties of idiot to silly scenarios to prim and proper looking magical girls just swearing casually and trying to gut each other. You could fill a whole reaction folder of screencaps from this show by itself, easily. And yet, it's still got frequent genuine raw moments (any time Utena's going full sicko looks and sounds fucking incredible) and is a compelling watch for its story, not just for jokes and porn. It's the triple threat.

I think this is the literal finest point of the razor's edge of what you can get away with in an ecchi show before you get banished to Bluray/web release only, and I'll be fucking shocked if something else manages to get to this level any time soon - there's a full on, decently explicit sex scene in one episode, and while it's intercut with flashbacks about the characters involved, the bits between those aren't hiding shit about them fucking. And it's good shit, too.

Utena, the protagonist, is the highlight by far, her arc of not just gradually accepting the villain role forced on her but actively synthesising it with her longstanding magical girl otaku love and her burgeoning sadism is really well done. "Soft shy girl is a massive sadist" is good shit as is, but it's done so well with Utena that it's wild.

At risk of sounding all trite and "I read it for the articles", I feel like there's a lot to be said about how fitting BDSM and the adjacent fetishes/porn tropes picked here are for the magical girl framing, and the focus on emotion and emotional release as themes in both (which comes through most with Magia Azure's interactions with Utena/Magia Baiser). Probably also a fair bit about MahoAko leaning into sex, lust, fetishes and so on as it's from a villain's perspective, and faded memories of Sailor Moon tell me a lot of its antagonists and villains were sexy, beautiful 'dark' people, there's something there.

The new gold standard for ecchi shows, easily. And like the third fucking manga I have to look into from this past season.

Mochi Mayhem in BNHA Pokemon AU? Kirishima: Mochi Manly! Manly Mochi!"

I dunno if Kirishima has the single-mindedness to break through the Mochi Madness like Nemona does. Seriously, how does she function as Student Council President when she has battle on the mind that much.

Ignoring the logistics of how the kids get to Kitakami since only 3-4 NPC kids besides the Protag got to visit (probably Yaoyorozu money tbh), I'm not sure how many of them would get through without getting Pecharunt'd.

Ochako would probably be the first to eat the tainted mochi. It may not be strawberry but its free mochi being offered to her.

I wonder if Satou, being experienced in sweets, would recognize something off with the Pecharunt Mochi and not eat it. Either he gets through the scenario unpossessed or Pecharunt shoots it at him, but he doesn't eat it willingly.

IIRC, Bakugou doesn't like sweets? So he wouldn't eat the mochi willingly and probably has a fast enough reaction time to dodge it being shot at him.

Shouji's 24/7 mask wearing would also save him.

Mineta would probably get comically bonked with mochi like Kieran.

Base Izuku would probably be going "Mochi Hero! Mochi Hero!" but Paldea!Izuku I said was a Team Star member? Dunno if he would have built up the determination/ will to break through.

Mina would definitely be a bouncy dancer like Penny. Ojiro and Kouda would be embarrassed dancers like Arven. Iida would be comically stiff just because he's Iida.

Breaking the fourth wall is usually Aoyama's job, but for some reason Jirou can hear the possessed trainer music whenever someone's doing the mochi chicken dance.

Since Quirks wouldn't be transferred here, Mochi Dancing Kaminari is probably the only time we'd see his shorted- out face. Unless he constantly gets zapped by his mons with electric moves of course.

PLEASE tell us ALL about your thoughts on AFO /tenderly gently caressing/ Spinner's small sad face

here's the thing with this chapter: i hit TWO nightmare scenarios (spinner getting a bulked up quirk, shouji confirmed spinner's foe) but got TWO very heartening developments (working to bust out kurogiri, face touch)

i LOVE a tender evil face touch. you know how in spop tender face touches were used as a manipulation tactic and shit. i am fucking thrilled that if i have to put up with hulked up spinner, i get this in recompense.

okay firstly the panel reminded me of two things - both very reachy, but they are thoughts i am spinning nonetheless

the scene of spinner placing the crispy probably-nana hand on shigaraki's face to hype him up back in jakku - like action itself is gentle, but the action begets violence both physical and personal (shigaraki's ignited, self-destructive rage throws him into all for one's control; spinner is gonna be hulking out obviously, but his compromised sense of self is being exploited). obviously spinner and AFO have different intentions, but it's like. i'm thinking about it.

when it was pointed out that you can see a slight, sad smile on spinner's face, it reminded me of the tenko flashbacks, where mama shimura is reaching out for tenko even as she's falling apart and her hand is flying off, you get that slice of panel of her hand passing his face with just enough of his mouth showing to make you uncertain if he's screaming or smiling, lending ambiguity to his present day recollection of the scene. i remembered that panel A LOT differently when the thought first occurred, but i'm holding onto this anyways. it might also just be that i see something paternal in the way AFO reaches for his cheek.

also when the leaks were coming out i was telling my friends like, WHAT deal with the devil vibes. obviously AFO always has deal with the devil vibes but something here just seems more potent? that something is probably my insane spinner bias, but something about the staging of it gives me shivers.

like it's a really simple scene, but it's devastatingly effective. the resignation, the sad smile, just the entire way AFO's hand is reaching, ready to pull him in - like even without spinner's narration you can feel what's going on with him.

and oh my god have i talked about the way AFO's hand is just like emerging from the darkness. cuz the way the hand is emerging from the darkness oh boy.

obviously we all know about the hand symbolism in bnha, and how we see that symbolism disrupted in shigaraki, and i really feel that same disrupted symbology is now being demonstrated with spinner. last time he showed up with the probably-nana hand, i had a few thoughts on what it might mean for spinner to still be carrying that hand around, and like. i don't know how this trend of spinner's association with disembodied hands and his devotion to shigaraki is going to continue, or if it'll be able to culminate in anything narratively satisfying, but there's something eerie and fascinating about it nonetheless.

those aren't actually all my thoughts but the rest are very self indulgent in the sense of "hm sure would be neat to see more interactions between all for one and spinner. in a variety of mediums."

note: one of my shorter works, but i’m super happy with it. i really enjoyed playing around with it.

legend has it that there was a king of the sea, who was feared by all in his kingdom for his beastly appearance, with the mouth of a monster and more tentacles than an octopus. he was a noble man of elegance, yet his heart ached, consumed with loneliness and the desire for connection, any connection at all.

his kingdom resided deep in the ocean, intentionally secluded from the rest of his fearful subjects, yet it always glowed with light at its darkest, illuminating his realm in the darkness in a way that set his heart ablaze, gentle in intention and inviting in warmth. one night, where the onyx oceans seemed to possibly glow even brighter than before, the king dared to leave his realm, venturing to the surface to search and thank whoever flooded the depths of his worl with crystalline light.

the king’s rise to the surface stunned him, the brightness unfiltered as he stared directly at its source, bewildered at her warmth and laughter, the way she twirled and danced with the way she hung on the moon. though, in his eyes of calm tempests, that depiction appeared tragically inaccurate and an injustice to the reality of it all—she was playing, a carefreeness to her movements as her legs wrapped around the end of the crescent she rested on, her hands reaching down to touch his face as he dared to venture closer and closer to her, letting her hands brush his fearsome visage with a delicate reverence in her bright eyes of starglow.

“are you not afraid of me?” the king asked, daring to graze her tresses, her eyes fluttering shut at his hand, before blinking with a content smile.

“should i be?” the woman jested in kind, soft and gentle gestures never ceasing.

“i’ve been told that i have the appearance of a monster,” the man explained, shying away from her touch and evading her eyes, though she persisted, a mirthful smile on her face.

“i’ve never believed in monsters.”

he visited her on a more frequent basis following her words, admiring and keeping her company to stave off some of the loneliness, constantly reaching towards her hands to feel a bit of her cold skin, allowing her to concentrate her nocturnal energy into something calmer, earning mellifluous giggles into his ears and croons of affection, her rocky vessel always expressing her innermost emotions as it constantly blushed pink with his presence.

the king allowed the sweet deity of the moon to let him feel like he was flying, the bare end of his tentacles touching the ocean, and in turn, he granted her the simple pleasures of swimming and letting her skin touch something as mundane as water, fondness glowing in his dark eyes as he saw the way her expression blinked and morphed upon her skin touching the cold water, the temperature shocking her, though his touch kept her warm and content.

the moon goddess kissed her oceanic lover on such a night, her eyes twinkling with stars as she leaned down, silently requesting for permission. upon the king granting such a wish, she pressed her lips against his, her pale hands carding through his dark locks as the man twirled a strand of her white hair with gentle hands, every caress promising something akin to eternity underneath a pink moon and in tranquil waters.

hunters always enjoyed killing for sport, the promise of glory and fuel for their egos too enticing to pass up the opportunity; perhaps it was for this that the god of the sea, king of the oceans was the pinnacle of it all.

the king went about in his demure, modest manner, roaming and inspecting the developments of his domain in the daylight, reveling in the way the sun god’s rays drifted and warmed his glacial skin, greeting his subjects dutifully. in his moment of conversing with one, his keen ears perk up at the sound of a boat, followed by another and another. despite the waves rippling, he could make out the points of harpoons easily enough, a shiver erupting through his spine as he examined the situation.

in a fit of fiery protectiveness, the king summoned up the most portentous of tempests, meant to lead the humans astray—somehow, they persisted through it all, in spite of the raging storm and warnings to fend away from the king’s people. the mere humans forced the monarch to rise to the surface, determination glowing in his eyes as the water reflected their glow.

yet, as much as the king of the sea attempted to thwart the hunters’ efforts, he succumbed to their relentless barrage, with one mortal’s spear piercing straight through his heart with a carnal smirk as the king fell, the other mortals claiming his body to flaunt their victory.

the moon goddess heard her lover’s scream first, with her first instinct being to desperately search for him, diving into the depths of the ocean to find the ruler, her fingers balling into furious fists and agony painted her features when she couldn’t.

her anger went unrestrained, channeling her energy to dim the light of the moon itself, plunging the sky into a black, guideless abyss as she threatened to maintain the sky to this state until the mortals recovered the king’s corpse; the mortals obeyed, searching frantically for the deity in wake of her unadulterated vexation.

the total darkness lasted for days, the humans further descending into chaos, madness, and despair as they searched for the deceased king, no amount of fire and man-made light a sufficient replacement for the goddess’ gift. it was during one of these nights, however, the goddess’ rage reached its pinnacle as she thrusted upon them the bloodied, mangled hunters at their feet, starlit eyes as frigid as the waters of the ocean without its ruler, and her vessel as vermilion as their blood, a promise for the decimation of villages if they could not fulfill the simple request.

when they brought his body to her, at a beach where the sand was pristinely white, the white-haired woman descended from her own realm, what was her heart shattering into iotas of pieces as she held the king of the sea in her arms, her starlight tears soaking into his skin as she lamented the loss of her lover, feeling the way his body slowly disintegrated into the seafoam he was born from.

the moon would regress in its glow in her grief and brighten in her happier moods, though never as bright as that of when she had her king—the light would never again reach down to the palace where the monarch resided.

two people stood in front of the painting: two lovers, one of seafoam, the other of stardust, clutching at each other’s hands in the middle of a dark ocean, the dark blues of his contrasting the whites of hers.

“the story was tragic, wasn’t it?” the boy inquired, turning to face the girl; his white hair stood stark against his skin, a teal mask muffling his voice.

“i suppose, but i think that there’s beauty in it; she fell in love with him beyond his appearance,” the girl commented in kind, her long black ponytail swishing to reveal her angular face, framed by her two long strands of white.

“it was the first story that i thought resonated with me,” the boy explained, a tentacle off of his webbed arm speaking in his mouth’s stead.

unperturbed by the appendage conversing with her, she glanced up at him, arms crossed, “i suppose i was the same. it was a nice form of escapism, since i fancied her to be a trapeze artist...a circus freak of sorts like me.”

“i can agree with the former, since i’ve been told that i have a monstrous appearance and the like, hence the mask.”

“monsters aren’t born, they’re made, in my opinion,” the girl rebutted with palpable insouciance, craning her head to scrutinize the features of his she could see, “and even then, i’ve never believed in monsters.”

black eyes met mint ones as the two properly glanced at one another unwaveringly, the girl clad in all black, and the boy in shades of forest greens and sea blues, before the boy inquired cautiously, “forgive me for asking this, but…have we met before?”

“i don’t think so, yet, you seem so familiar, i don’t know why,” she replied, trepidation evident in her answer, arms crossed in front of her stomach as her orbs flitted to the ground.

the white-haired boy extended his hand for her to take, eyes gently beckoning her to look at him, forcing himself to speak without the use of his appendage, “i’m shoji mezo.”

the girl clasped it, an unreadable glow in her own as she met his gaze with a newfound assertion, a small, equally inscrutable smile on her countenance, “hisakawa kazahana.”
