I do admittedly like Murderbot/ART in a rather QPR-ish way. That doesn't mean they're gonna be sticking fiddlybits in each other's ports, arranging a wedding in one of Perihelion's modules, or writing each other love sonnets. What we see of their inbook relationship IS their relationship to one another. No Hallmark movie shit will demonstrate more care than MB killing the fuck out of the people it thought killed ART or ART going to such great lengths to get MB back safe from the planets surface. They've hung out inside of ART's mind ffs. You don't need to have sex to be intimate.

Actually, thinking about it, thinking about that quote by whomstever about how everyone thinks that fanfiction is about inserting sex into a canon but really it's about inserting emotional intimacy into a canon- isn't that also kind of sad, in its own way?

I mean don't get me wrong, there're plenty of fics out there that manage emotional intimacy without sex (or even romance!) and there's plenty of fics that are unabashedly about sex and sexual pleasure, and others that manage both sex and emotional intimacy- these are honorable intentions for honest fics. But there are also easily so many fics, so many writers and readers, so many people out there who crave emotional intimacy, who want to see character-driven stories where they talk out their trauma and their feelings and their needs- and yet the only expression of these needs that they can imagine is carried through romance and ends in sex. That the idealized emotional intimacy can only take these limited, amatonormative shapes... isn't that kind of sad?
