The Kazama & Mishima’s naming traditions and the Next Gens of Kazama’s children!

Alright so I've been cooking this for a while since they dropped Jun's parents name on T8. Bear in mind, I'm in no way fluent in Japanese nor I'm a native, but I have google on my side to educate me better about Japanese naming systems and the kanji they used for naming the child (jinmeiyo and joyo).

I just want to named XiaoJin’s future babies so bad, kay?! Lol. Even though I know Jin is opposed to any plan of continuing the lineage (which is heartbreaking 😭💔) but the XiaoJin's shipper in me cannot be extinguished!! 🔥🔥🔥 I still want to named them! Lol.

Anyway! Feel free to correct me with your information! I'm open to any kind of knowledge 💖

Alrightt! Without further ado, let's deep dive into Kazama/Mishima lore!!

So...

Tekken 8 has finally dropped some lore about Kazama family, and it's about Jun to be exact. There, we can get a glimpse of Jun's parent name:

Soon after, a Japanese KazuJun's fan dropped this tweet :

Assuming a native Japanese able to decipher those characters correctly, now we finally have Jun's parents name kanji:

純一 the father, and 恵 the mother.

As we all know, kanji has several way of reading. Cited from pon-navi, there are two typical ways of reading kanji, kun-yomi and on-yomi. In addition, there is a reading system called "jinmei kun" which is used only for names.

"Soo?? What's their name?! How do we know the correct reading?!"

Here's the thing!!

Tekken has giving us hints that Mishima family has a tradition to give their children with their kanji name, following a common practice in Japan. Let's take a look at their kanji.

仁八, Jinpachi

平八, Heihachi & 一美, Kazumi

一八, Kazuya

Notice the similarities? You’re right! The Mishima child inherited their parents' kanji! The sons inherit '八' kanji, with Heihachi inherited '八' from Jinpachi and Kazuya inherited both kanji from Heihachi (八) and Kazumi (一).

As it is a common practice, the same can be said with the Kazama family! Although in their case, they might not be inheriting the kanji but instead with the reading of the said character. Or maybe phonetically similar would be correct here.

For example, this is Jun's kanji: 準

This character '準' can be read several ways, some of them are : Jun, shun, setsu, taira, toshi, narau, nori, hitoshi.

And one of her father kanji is: 純

'純' can be read as : kito, Jun, atsu, atsushi, aya, itaru, ito, kiyoshi, sunao, sumi, tsuna, to, makoto, yoshi.

Have you noticed it? That's right! '純' and '準' can be both read as Jun! It means that Jun's kanji has the same reading as her father's kanji, although they have different kanji characters.

From here, we can assume that Jun's father can be called Jun____ as well.

As for the other kanji, '一' can be read as: hito, hitotsu, hajime, ichi, itsu, i, osamu, kuni, susumu, tada, chi, nobu, hajimu, hajime, hi, hiji, hide, hitoshi, makoto, masashi, moto, ka, kazu, kata, atsu.

Looking from the lists, together his name could be read most plausibly as : Junichi, Junitsu, or Juni. Imo, Junichi sounds the best, so yeah, I completely agree with the KazuJun's fan.

Now we all know that Kazama has similar sounding name with different kanji.

On the other hand, the mother has '恵' that can be read as: megumu, megumi, kei, e, aya, sato, satoshi, shige, toshi, yasu, yoshi.

While it could be anything, I think it's either Megumi or Megumu. Why? Because I found out that '恵' has the same reading as one of Jin's kanji reading! lol. Let's take a look at Jin's kanji!

This is Jin's kanji: 仁

It can be read as: Jin, ni, nin, kimi, kimu, sato, sane, shinobu, tadashi, to, toyo, nobu, nori, hisashi, hito, hitoshi, hiroshi, masa, masashi, mi, megumi, megumu, yasushi, yoshi.

Do you find it? Both '恵' and '仁' can be read as Megumi/Megumu! lol.

One of the speculation is that Jun named her son Jin as a sign of respect to her father in law, Jinpachi (仁八). Even though Jin is a Mishima by blood, he doesn't inherit the '八' character as he was raised in Kazama family. So he inherited just the '仁' character. Besides, it also sounds almost the same. Jun.. Jin.. It's phonetically similar, right? And if Jin were born a girl, I bet he would be called Megumi/Megumu instead just like his grandmother, lol.

Thus, we can safely conclude that the Mishima has the habit to inherit their kanji characters while the Kazama inherit the reading of their kanji's name.

AND NOW! HERE COMES THE MAIN DISH!!!! 💖💖💖

What about the future Kazama kids?! Let’s move on to that and do the real cooking here for the XiaoJin's babies name! :D

We have seen Jin's kanji, but what about Xiayou?? Xiaoyu is Chinese by birth, and her hanzi (Chinese characters) are 凌曉雨 and リン・シャ��ユウ is how it's written in Japanese katakana.

凌, Líng: surpass / リン (Rin)

曉, Xiao: dawn / シャオ (Shao)

雨, Yu: rain / ユウ (Yu)

Now, I'd like to think that they would combine or use either their character or its reading for their baby! Also! They might use some of Jin's family name's characters :D

Here are some of my ideas for the babies name :

For boy:

晨一, Shinichi, a portmanteau of Jin and Xiaoyu's nickname and kanji inherited from Junichi/Kazuya.

Explanation: the first kanji '晨' means Dawn, which has the same meaning as Xiaoyu hanzi '曉'. The kanji reading is also the combination of Xiaoyu's nickname and Jin. Shao+Jin=Shin. It also sounds similar. Jin, Shin, it's rhyming, right? Just like Jun and Jin!

For the second kanji '一' I'd like to think the story behind it was that Xiaoyu wanted to preserve Kazama/Mishima naming practice but Jin was reluctant to do it. In the end, they decided to take the kanji '一' which was present in both Kazama and Mishima, that's in Junichi (純一) and Kazuya (一八).

For girl :

凌, Shino, a portmanteau of Xiaoyu's nickname and Jin, same character as Xiao’s hanzi that could also be the feminine ver. of Shin.

Explanation: it’s rather simple, I use the same character in Xiaoyu’s hanzi that has different reading while also the combination of Jin and Xiaoyu’s name. In Chinese ‘凌’ read as Ling but in Japanese, ‘凌’ has several reading. One of them is Shino. Shino could be the sister or the twin sister of Shinichi, in case XiaoJin have two child or twins in the future :)

琳, Rin, a kanji that has the same reading as Xiaoyu’s name and phonetically similar with Jin.

Explanation: I think this one is easy to understand! Rin and Jin, phonetically similar like what Kazama would've named their children. It’s also Xiaoyu’s surname in Japanese. The kanji ‘琳’ itself means ‘beautiful jewel’ and in Chinese the hanzi means 'beautiful jade’, and it reminds them of the greens in Yakushima forest, Jin's home.

Alright, now that I’ve spilled out all of the stuff inside my chest and calmed down, I’ll give you a simple name chart for those who don’t want to read wall of texts, lol. Hope this helps!

Chapter 36: Does Your Cell Phone Need A Name

Now Kawasumi has to give the PHS a name. From a long list of choices, she's narrowed it down to three: Telmusu, Phoneko and Sazanka.

Kawasumi's siblings say that she can't give the PHS those kinds of names and she needs a cuter name. She hits them because she doesn't want them deciding her name (Their names are Shinobu and Yutaka, for future reference)...then, when Kawasumi asks if they're okay, she realizes she just hit her master's siblings. Being smart enough to know how a household hierarchy works, she accuses them of not trying hard enough to be good comedians. She then tells Kawasumi that she doesn't need a name, given that she's just a phone. But Kawasumi says she can't do that, given her friend Hiroshi has a phone just like her and he gave her a name so, to be like him, she needs to follow his example. The PHS asks if she wants his opinion, taking out a bow that works as a receiver. Kawasumi is ready to call him...but first, she decides to study up on conversation topics.

The PHS hits her for that.

She then tells Kawasumi if she's so scared to call him, why doesn't she just message him? Then they summon another tiny ninja, named Kazama Kotaru, who has torture as a hobby.

So that's that. And Kawasumi has thought of a name for the PHS: Nano. Because she's part of the family, plus one (part of the kanji for Nano looks like 1 in our language). Nano now knows she's family...and flashes back to how she was treated as if she was worthless for years. She puts on a front about how lame her name is...but she clearly adores it.

Sleep time for now. Tomorrow, Kawasumi takes Nano to school.

315PRO and its Saints EXTRA - New Idol Discovery

In celebration of SideM's 6th anniversary, let's give these six of them some love! These six of them are known as the potential idol recruits that are participated to form Legenders, but only Amehiko, Sora and Chris have made it, but these six of them will remain in the SideM fanbase. So here are the six idols and its corresponding feast days!

June 13 - Takeshi Mimasaka (former security guard)

St. Anthony of Padua: Franciscan Portuguese friar and priest who is noted by his contemporaries for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick, he was one of the most quickly canonized saints in church history. Although he is known as the patron of lost items, his major shrine can be found in Padua, Italy. In January 1946, he is proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII, and is given the title of Doctor Evangelicus (Evangelical Doctor).

October 8 - Goro Sanjo (former child care worker)

St. Reparata: 3rd century virgin and martyr who was arrested for her faith and tortured during the persecution of Roman Emperor Decius. The city of Florence in Italy, celebrates her feast annually on 8 October, in commemoration of its deliverance from the Ostrogoths led by Radagaisus in 406 AD, which it attributes to her intercession.

February 22 - Shinobu Kazama (former special make-up artist)

Chair of Saint Peter: Known as the Throne of Saint Peter, it is a relic conserved in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the sovereign enclave of the Pope inside Rome, Italy. The relic is a wooden throne that tradition claims the Apostle Saint Peter, the leader of the Early Christians in Rome and first Pope, used as Bishop of Rome. It is enclosed in a sculpted gilt bronze casing designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and executed between 1647 and 1653, and Pope Benedict XVI described the chair as 'a symbol of the special mission of Peter and his Successors to tend Christ's flock, keeping it united in faith and in charity' in 2012. The wooden throne was a gift from Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Bald to Pope John VIII in 875.

December 18 - Eru Shiraishi (former toy-maker)

Expectation of the Blessed Virgin Mary: This feast is not on the universal calendar, but is still commemorated on this day in some places such as Spain, Portugal, Italy and Poland as well as in a few religious orders. The Dominican order honor Mary under the title of 'Our Lady of the Expectation'. A High Mass was sung at a very early hour each morning during the octave, and it became customary that all who were with child would attend, that they might honor Our Lady's Maternity, and seek a blessing upon themselves and it is sometimes joined with a novena beginning on December 16 and ending on Christmas Eve.

January 8 - Reo Igari (former high school baseball player)

Our Lady of Prompt Succor (Notre Dame du Prompt Secours): A Marian title associated with a wooden devotional image of the Madonna and Child enshrined in New Orleans, Louisiana and is closely associated with Mother Saint Michel, the Superior of the New Orleans Ursulines. On September 21, 1851, Pope Pius IX authorized the public devotion to the Marian title and designated this date as its feast day of thanksgiving. In 1895, it granted a Canonical Coronation to the image through Archbishop Francis Janssens by Pope Leo XIII. Pious believers of New Orleans pray before the statue of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, asking for her intercession whenever a hurricane threatens the city. During hurricane season, prayers are said at every Mass in the city during the Prayers of the Faithful requesting Our Lady's intercession and protection. November 2 - Mario Ando (former candy shop owner)

All Souls' Day: Known as the 'Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed', is the day after All Saints' Day. In the Catholic Church, 'the faithful' refers specifically to baptized Catholics; 'all souls' commemorates the church penitent of souls in Purgatory, whereas 'all saints' commemorates the church triumphant of saints in Heaven.

SOUMA-HEN 2021 CAST

Hi, humans and oni, all fans of Hakumyu!

Since Souma-hen is a thing again I’ve recovered my original cast announcement post and updated it. The info about the actors is a mix between what I’ve found about them and info from the official cast page, but I haven’t included every past myu/stage play in the official info, so I’d recommend checking it if you’re interested in seeing more of any of these people.

Without further ado, I present you the official cast for the 2021 version of Musical Hakuoki Souma-hen:

Mizuki Umetsu (梅津瑞樹) is Kazue Souma

28 years old, his Twitter is @MizukiUmetsu, and he’s been in Musical Touken Ranbu and the Sanrio Boys stage play .

Risa Matsuzaki (松崎莉沙) is Chizuru Yukimura

She’s a member of Roys, a Japanese female duo chorus group. Playing Chizuru in this myu will be her first time as an actress. Her Twitter is @risadegozaimasu and she’s 24 years old.

Hidetoshi Kubota (久保田秀敏) is Toshizo Hijikata

Has worked in films and dramas before, also has myu/stage play experience (Sengoku Basara stage play , Moriarty the Patriot myu, etc.). He’s 33 years old and his Twitter is @kubotahidetoshi.

Shuji Kikuchi (菊池修司) is Souji Okita

First difference with the 2020 cast! Shuji Kikuchi replaces Shogo Yamazaki, who first appeared in Hakumyu in Shitan Hijikata-hen. He’s 25 and his Twiiter is @kutisyu. He’s been in some stage plays before, like the Pirates of the Frontier UtaPri stage play .

Shoichiro Oomi (大海将一郎) is Hajime Saito

His Twitter is @shoichiro_oomi. The protagonist/”your” character in the Fate/GO Babylonia Myu, also has some experience as a seiyuu (in fact google doesn’t list him as an actor but as a voice actor) and is/was in a group called "Hi! Superb"

Yuta Higuchi (樋口裕太) is back as Heisuke Todou!

His first Hakumyu was Shitan Hijikata-hen! He is 25 and he won a Junon Superboy contest (Most Photogenic) and according to Anime on Stage he’s been in other myus/stage plays, like Ensemble Stars and Yona of the Dawn. According to the cast page he’s been in Ao no Exorcist and Hitman Reborn stage plays too. His Twitter is @higuchi24yuta.

Ryousuke Koike (小池亮介) is Nagakura Shinpachi

Second change in the cast, he’s replacing Yuta Kishimoto, who was Nagakura in both Shitan Hijikata-hen and Shitan Kazama-hen. He’s 25 and his Twitter is @ryosuke19951117. He was Akito/Agito in the Air Gear myu, and according to the cast page he wants everyone to think that Nagakura Shinpachi is cool (literally, 「永倉新八カッコいいな」kakkoii and everything)

Shouta Kawakami (川上将大) is Sanosuke Harada

He’s been in Tenimyu, Rice on stage, Hitman Reborn and Touken Ranbu stages/myus, among others. He’s 27 and his Twitter is @rjpmission. An anecdote: a few weeks ago someone I follow on Twitter went to see Rice on stage and he was one of the actors performing, which made me wonder if Souma-hen would happen since people from the cast were working on other things and I supposed that meant the situation in Japan was good enough to resume events like stage plays, included those that had been cancelled.

Teruma (輝馬) is back as Keisuke Sannan!

Sannan since Hakumyu Reimeiroku, he’s been in Kuromyu (William T Spears), Bungou Stray Dogs stage play, the Nanatsu no Taizai stage play and Tenimyu. His Twitter is @teruma_060 and he’s 31.

This makes me really happy! I still prefer Ryosuke Mikata, but he’s showed that he deserves the role, so I hope he stays in Hakumyu for many years to come! And I’m still mad that Teruma wasn’t in the Tango on the Campania Kuromyu...

Taizo Shiina (椎名鯛造) is back as Susumu Yamazaki!

First appeared in Shitan Hijikata-hen, and he’s been in some Sengoku Basara and Danganronpa stage plays, among others. He’s 34 and his Twitter is @TaizoShiina.

Taira Imata (井俣太良) is back as Isami Kondou!!!

Best dad since Okita-hen (second Hakumyu) and by this point, everyone’s senpai, what else can be said about this man??? If you’ve watched any Hakumyu other than Saito-hen, you already know him. Great man and actor, he’s 45 and his Twitter is @TAIRANT1975.

These are the characters/actors & actress that I covered in my first Souma-hen cast post. I actually wrote another one with the rest of the cast, but thanks to a broken mouse the whole post got deleted when it was almost finished. Time to redeem myself!

Syuya Sunagawa (砂川脩弥) is Saburo Miki!

Replacing Allen Kohatsu in the role of Miki, he’s 26 and his Twitter is @suna_syu_. It’s his first time in a musical, but he’s in the Kamen Rider Zero One drama. According to the Kamen Rider Wikia, he won the Avex Boys Award in 2016.

Masashi Sonomura (園村将司) is Risaburo Nomura!

He’s 22 and he’s @masashisonomura on Twitter. He’s been in Tenimyu and has done some stuff on TV (the cast page lists some things but I’m not familiar with them ;_;)

Masafumi Yokoyama (横山真史) is Kyuju Amagiri!

He’s 34 and he’s @masafumi21yoko on Twitter. He’s been in Touken Ranbu, Ikemen Sengoku and Toki no Kizuna stages.And as my friend and Amagiri’s biggest fan Lawrichai pointed out, he played Amagiri’s grandpa/relative in the Toki no Kizuna stage.

Takuma Sueno (末野卓磨) is back as Kyo Shiranui!

He’s 36 and he’s @sueno0724 on Twitter. His first Hakumyu was Shitan Kazama hen. Has been in the Sengoku Basara stage play and the Rantaro Shinobu myu (this one wasn’t that long ago so I remember seen funny pics of this on Twitter).

Hiroyuki Kawamoto (川本裕之) is back as Kodo Yukimura!

Egg dad since the times of Harada hen, he doesn’t have a Twitter account and apparently there isn’t that much info about him on Google D:

And... drum roll a big round of applause for our returning demon, the original, the one and only, SHOGO SUZUKI (鈴木勝吾) AS CHIKAGE KAZAMA!!!

I already spoiled this in my Souma-hen is back post but I’m sooooooooooooooo happy to see him back. He’s @Shogo_Suzuki_ on Twitter (where he’s posted photos of his Hakumyu-watching sessions more than once),he’s 31 and he played Kazama from the very beginning in Saito-hen until Live 2. During his absence from Hakumyu he didn’t stop acting, some of you may remember my post about his appearance in the Moriarty the Patriot myu.

Not that I dislike Yoshihide Sasaki (Hijikata in Reimei, and Kazama in Harada-hen and the 2020 Souma-hen cast), but I will always see him as my dear Viscount Druitt from Kuromyu. And let’s be honest, Shogo has his “own brand” of Kazama. He took the character and made it his own, having a unique way of portraying him and enjoying every last bit of it.

And that was the complete main cast! This time we had all the info from the start so I don’t think a follow-up post will be necessary.

As an ending note, I would like to dedicate this post to Serizawa’s actor, Akira Kubodera, who passed away last month. I’m sure he would love to see that everyone has been hoping for Souma-hen to return and that the Hakuoki Shinsengumi, or at least its spirit, can’t be defeated.

Chapter 1: When Night Comes

Makoto steadied herself as she continued to take deep breaths. Closing her eyes, she could feel the blood flowing under her skin to her muscles. Letting out a slow, long breath, she swung her blade, twisting with each turn and slicing the air around her. Her footwork was light and delicate as she practically danced around the training field.

Despite how much her lungs burned and her body ached, she pushed forward. Even if she was unable to control her breathing like this all day, she could at least try to break her record of a few hours.

Feeling the hair on the back of her neck rise, Makoto’s eyes narrowed as she spun around. Freezing, her wooden blade stopped just before it made contact with the neck of the graying haired man behind her.

“Aren’t you supposed to be asleep?” he asked, unamused.

“Master!” Makoto jumped back, dropping her wooden sword to her side.

“Well?” He asked, his large frame looming over her own.

Despite the scars that littered his body and the snarl that seemed to be tattooed to his face, Makoto couldn’t help but laugh. After all, when you live with a man like Shiro here for two years, you learn to read the little details.

“My apologies Master. Please don’t mind me, I’m just refining my technique a little more,” she smiled softly.

Huffing out a heavy sigh, the older man pulled out a handkerchief from his sleeve and handed it to her.

“Are you unsure of it?” he asked.

“I’m not sure,” she hummed, wiping the sweat off her forehead.

“But if push comes to shove, I can always default back to what you and Shin-san taught me,” she smiled, reassuring the older man.

As the sun began to rise over the horizon, Makoto tied her hakama securely around her before slipping one of Shiro’s swords into her waistband. Steadying the thoughts in her mind, she slipped on her beloved crane patterned haori. It was white, with black paper cranes that littered the bottom and the end of her sleeves. The once beautiful scarlet inside had turned a dull mahogany form many years of use.

Tying her baby pink hair into a loose ponytail, she couldn’t help but stop and stare at her reflection in the mirror.

Studying the girl in the glass, a frown etched itself into her face. Standing straight and dusting off the imaginary dirt that clung to her pants, Makoto tried to smile only for it to drop a second later.

A trembling hand gripped the haori’s sleeve while the other covered her left eye, hiding the large scar on top of it.

Shaking her head of negative thoughts, she went back to her prepping. Looking over her equipment once more, Makoto double and triple checked it. A little paranoid that she’d forgotten something.

As she recounted the number of sleep darts she had, the very soft thumps of Shiro’s footsteps made her raise her head.

“Makoto,” his gruff voice called as he slid the door open.

Turning to him, Makoto nodded, “Right.”

Standing in front of the Kazama estate, the rising morning sun casting heavy shadows around the two.

“I’ll be off then,” Makoto bowed, her gentle smile pulling at the corner of her lips.

“Makoto, wait,” Shiro called, stopping her before she could leave.

Pulling her close, he hugged her tightly, his only arm cradling her head close to his shoulder. It was warm. She felt so safe and warm, the same way she did when her father hugged her as a little girl.

“I’ll be waiting, so don’t do anything stupid,” he grumbled, his voice soft next to her ear.

Eyes widening for a second, Makoto returned his embrace, nodding her head.

“I’ll be back soon,” she smiled, her soft, gentle features glowing in the sunlight.

Waving goodbye, Shiro watched as Makoto’s back grew smaller and smaller until she was nothing but a speck on the horizon. Dropping his hand, the frown etched on his face grew as he turned to walk back inside.

“Shinazugawa is there a reason that you’ve been watching us this whole time?” Shiro questioned, never turning to face the white-haired man.

“Are you really going to let her become a Demon Slayer?” Sanemi growled, coming out from behind a tree.

“I’d rather she do this than live out the rest of her days as a hollow husk. At least this way, she can help prevent others from ending up with the same fate,” Shiro simply replied, before turning to face him.

“Now, how about you come and join me for a cup of tea. She made it before she left so I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.”

Walking up the wistaria mountain, Makoto was breathless at how beautiful it was. The blooming trees seemed to never end, surrounding her in an ocean of pale purples, blues, and pinks. The cool earth beneath her bare feet only added to the refreshing feeling that washed over her.

Closing her eyes, Makoto’s smile grew as she brought a bundle of flowers down to her face. The sweet scent filling her nose.

Plucking a bundle, Makoto gently wrapped it up and placed it inside her kimono sleeve. Having it around could help her later on during the test. Surely they wouldn’t mind, right?

Continuing forward, a thought crossed the girl’s mind that made her wonder. Didn’t Shinobu have similar wistaria trees planted at her estate?

Before she could ponder on that thought, however, Makoto had made it. Joining the group of aspiring swordsmen, she noticed there were about 30 of them there.

Taking a deep breath, she turned her attention to the end of the stone path, finding two of the Ubuyashiki siblings greet everyone. Seeing them caused a smile to cross her face, glad that they seemed to be doing well.

After receiving the two's blessings, the group was released into the mountain for the next week. Steeling her nerves, Makoto stepped forward.

Running into the forest, she needed to hurry. It was already nightfall, and demons were going to be out soon.

Tying the last ribbon to the branch next to her, Makoto sat and waited in the treetops. Taking out a small incense burner, she set it up in a nook where it wouldn’t slip and burned some incense. The faint smell of wood and wistaria hiding her own.

It wasn’t long before Makoto felt the slightest shift in the air around her. Turning to one of the ribbons she tied, she silently followed it.

Jumping through the trees, Makoto stopped a few branches away after reaching her destination, observing the two demons ensnared in her trap. They unforgivingly clawed at each other as the net swayed, tugging at the ribbon hidden above it.

Bringing a small bamboo tube to her lips, she shot two small darts at the demons, startling them.

Frantically looking around, the demons scanned the surrounding trees for her, trying to find who had shot them.

Silently jumping down, the soft rustling of leaves from Makoto’s landing caused their heads to snap in her direction.

Eyes darting, they finally grew quiet. All of their anger suddenly started to quell. Not entirely, but it was now easier for them to think straight. Cutting the rope net with their claws, the two fell the short distance back to the ground.

“What the hell! Get the fuck off me!” the four-horned demon yelled, shoving off the long-haired one.

The long-haired one stood up, only to begin stumbling, head-heavy.

“Oh piss off!” he snapped back between waves of fatigue.

Something was wrong.

Frantically looking around, the two were exhausted and becoming disoriented. Was the world in slow motion or was that just them?

By the time they realized what was happening, it was too late. Struggling to stand upright, their heads were foggy and fatigue began to set in. Their limbs felt like lead as a gentle, floral smell seemed to set in around them. The world suddenly looked hazy in their tired eyes, like a gentle fog held them warmly in its embrace.

Through half-lidded eyes, the two demons could hear the rustling of leaves and the figure of a woman walking out of the trees.

“Who… the hell are you…!?” the horned demon growled, lowering his body into a defensive stance.

“My name is Makoto. Makoto Sasaki,” she smiled warmly at them.

“I don’t give a shit who you are! All I know is that you smell delicious; I can’t wait to sink my teeth into you!” the long-haired one cackled, lunging towards her.

Lowing her head, Makoto apologized, “I’m sorry, but… I can’t let that happen.”

Dodging the demon with ease, Makoto’s hand harshly met with the side of the demon’s neck, knocking him unconscious.

Watching her crotch down, the horned demon grinned as she turned her back to him. Silently dashing forward, his eyes widened when he suddenly found himself not where he was before. Hesitantly looking out into the mist around him, his breath caught in his throat.

“Sleep Breathing, Fourth Form Modified: Sleep Paralysis, Knockout,” Makoto said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Her voice snapped the demon back to reality when he felt a sharp chop on the side of his neck. Collapsing next to the other demon, he struggled to keep his eyes open. Growling in frustration, the other demon was already beginning to disintegrate when he tried to pick himself up only to fall back down.

He was so confused. What was going on? What was in those darts? The demon next to him still had his neck in tack so why was he dying? Not to mention, the girl had left herself wide open, there was no way she could have reacted that quickly!

But more importantly, who was that woman he saw in the fog?

“This might hurt,” Makoto warned, kneeling down and injecting something into the horned demon’s arm.

That was when he realized. He didn’t know how, but this girl somehow had poison effective against demons. He could feel it making its way through his system, and yet he felt no pain. It was… oddly peaceful.

Struggling to get back up, his mind was racing. He had to do something, he wasn’t going to die here!

Feeling a gentle hand touch the top of his head, memories flooded his mind and the women in the mist resurfaced. Looking up, Makoto’s smile was just like the one the women had, soft and gentle.

“M… Mom…?!” the horned demon croaked, finally remembering who she was.

Tears slowly slipped from his eyes at the memory, the feeling of Makoto’s fingers in his hair reminding him of his childhood. He felt so tired closing his eyes.

“I’m sorry… Mom…” Makoto heard him murmur before turning to ash.

Watching his clothes fall to the floor, she felt her heart leap into her throat.

“Ah-I get it now!” the long-haired demon laughed, causing Makoto’s head to snap towards him.

“You sneaky bitch! I’ve heard of your kind, Mar-!” but his laughter was caught off as he finally turned to ash.

Sitting alone in the silence, Makoto picked up what remained of their clothes. Folding them neatly, she brought them close to her chest. Closing her eyes, she bowed her head in prayer.

“I’m sorry, but you’re going to need to wait a little bit before I can give you a proper burial,” she mumbled, turning to look up at the night sky.

Jumping through the trees, Makoto continued to kill demons in her strange way. Catching, soothing, and then injecting them with a poison she had created. Like all the others, she collected their belongings left behind, prayed for them, and waited for sunrise.

As the sun finally peaked above the horizon, Makoto couldn’t be any more grateful. Collapsing on her perch, she was sweating bullets as she finally released her Total Concentration Breathing.

It hurt, despite never being harmed by an actual demon, her lungs felt like they were going to explode through her ears. Her heart was pounding painfully in her chest and her limbs felt numb.

“It’s okay,” she heaved, “I’ll be okay.”

Collecting her items, she moved to another section of the forest as the sun shined above her, only to reset her traps and barry the demon’s she’d slain. Pressing her hands together, she prayed for their next life and the ones they had killed once more.

After the second day had passed, the previous night’s events repeated itself. Things were going smoothly until one of her traps was set off.

Following the ribbon, Makoto found it strange how violently it shook. The closer she got, the more uneven and relentless the air became, causing the hairs on her body to stand on end.

Before she could even see the trap, however, she heard it. A loud, booming voice that shouted profanity and curses.

When she finally arrived, Makoto wasn’t sure of what she was looking at. In her trap, was not a demon, but a young man. Sure, Makoto had run into a few other swordsmen who had taken a wrong step, but this…

He was muscular and shouting his head off. His chipped blades had fallen to the ground, but what left Makoto speechless was his boar head. Despite the age and wear of it, he wore an extremely well-crafted boar mask over his own. Or, was it real?

“What… in the world…?” Makoto wondered out loud when the sound of demons growling snapped her out of her daze.

Readying her sword, Makoto’s gaze shifted to the demon’s below. The boy shouted in disgust as one of the demons licked his bleeding leg.

“That’s fucking NASTY!” he cringed, kicking the demon in the face and sending it flying.

Jumping off the branch, Makoto weaved through the demons in one swift motion.

“Sleep Breathing, Third Form: Moonlit Waltz,” she softly said, her gaze melancholic as she turned to look back at the demons.

The boy’s eyes widened behind his mask as he swore he saw a fog that seemed to trail after her blade. The moonlight above tailing and following her every movement, like a spotlight on a pair of dancers.

The demon’s howled in agony below him as their heads slid off, only for them to begin disintegrating.

“I’m sorry you’re in so much pain,” Makoto bowed towards them.

“Curse you-curse you-curse you! Curse you to hell and back!” they shouted with their last breath before completely turning to ash.

The boy watched in awe and confusion as she approached where the demons once stood. He hadn’t even noticed her until she had appeared and cut off the demon’s heads.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t let you hurt this person…” she sighed, closing her eyes in prayer.

“HUH?!” the boy screeched, snapping out of whatever weird daze he was in.

“WHAT ARE YOU TALKN’ ‘BOUT? I COULD HAVE HANDLED THEM ON MY OWN!” he trashed, a stream of steam escaping from his boar mask.

“W-What are you doing?! Please stop that, you’re only going to get yourself more tangled!” Makoto warned, her soft voice falling onto deaf ears.

“I DIDN’T NEED YOUR HELP! I HAD EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL! YOU THINK YOU’RE BETTER THAN ME DON’T CHA?! I’LL SHOW YOU! FIGHT ME!” and on and on he went, his rage seeming to be never-ending.

A frown pulled at Makoto’s lips, upset at his little temper tantrum. She was hoping that she’d never had to deal with something like this again, but it seemed the gods didn’t agree.

Taking in a deep breath, Makoto swung the blood off of her blade before sheathing it. Pulling a shakuhachi out of her kimono, she brought it up to her lips. It looked a little rough and old, but the sound that came out of the bamboo flute caused the boy to freeze. It was a deep and soulful sound that seemed to demand your attention. You could practically hear the many years of use that this flute had been playing for.

Looking down, he grew quiet as he watched how the moonlight seemed to cause Makoto to glow, her oddly colored hair flowing in the wind ever so softly. With the reddish-brown tips in her hair, it reminded him of a lone sakura tree under a full moon.

It was almost like he was looking at a painting.

That’s when the smell finally reached his nose. The gentle scent of lavender and… roses? It caused his heartbeat to slow and his muscles to relax. It was somewhat comforting.

Pulling the flute away from her lips, Makoto slowly opened her eyes. Looking up at the now docile boy, she gave him a soft, sheepish smile.

“Why don’t I get you out of that?”
