I don’t really get to listen to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan back in the USA. I used to BUMP this in the car, cranked up to 27. After 9/11, suddenly it wasn’t something you could play too loudly without neighbors looking at you suspiciously anymore. It’s great music, no matter what anyone says. Some of you might recognize this one from Natural Born Killers, the riot scene when Tommy Lee Jones loses control of the prison. I really don’t know what Oliver Stone was thinking using a devotional love song for the most violent scene in the film. But he did. Good song, though. Great album. most of the women of the mughal haraman were, in fact, not wives at all; they were mothers, like hamida banu and harkha bai, unmarried sisters, like jahanara and roshanara, divorced women, like khanzada, single daughters, like zeb-un-nisa and zeenat-un-nisa, aunts, like gulbadan, distant relatives, like salima sultan, elderly dependents, etc. they were not sexually available women at all. and yet they all had a role to play, a duty to perform, and they were respected, and paid, for these crucial jobs.

who were the mughal women behind the veil of the zenana? hidden behind the purdah, little historical accounts were recorded of the ongoings within the harem, and those that were are steeped in orientalism, western curiosity (and ethnocentricism alike) sprouting ideas of languor, lasciviousness, blouseless indian women waiting in their haveli for their shahenshah to visit them. such a lack of probing into the real story led to a disappointing overshadowing of the role played by the harem in the empire. but ira mukhoty casts this shadow away, shining the light of her in depth research and impeccable narrative to delve into the lives of some of the most influential women the world has seen.

mukhoty takes her readers through each reign of the mughal emperors, from babur's escape from samarkand to aurangzeb's mammoth of expanded territory. we hear of khanzada begum, babur's eldest sister, surrendered to shaybani khan and separated from her timurid family for almost a decade; gulbadan begum, who authored the famous humayunama, the biography of her father; nur jahan, the chief consort who had coins struck in her name, who was short of only being announced in the khutba from being the padshah herself; and jahanara begum, the daughter of shah jahan, who went from her glorious reign as padshah begum to her imprisonment in agra fort with her ailing father as her brother took the throne. interspersed are the stories of other, lesser known women of the harem -- wet nurses such as maham anaga; second, third, and fourth wives; and sisters and daughters that fall back to the sidelines. most beautifully of all, mukhoty weaves this all into a complex tapestry of female power, ambition, companionship, and spirituality, displaying in rich hues the kaleidoscope of lives suffusing the mughal harem.

after four-hundred years, the curtain of the zenana is finally pulled back -- along with the misconceptions colouring a vital chapter of female history.

Amitabh Bachchan, born Amitabh Shrivastav on 11 October 1942, is a renowned Indian actor, producer, TV host, singer, and former politician.

With a film career spanning over 50 years, he has appeared in over 200 Hindi films. He's celebrated as one of Indian cinema's most influential figures, earning titles such as the "Shahenshah of Bollywood" and "Star of the Millennium." His cinematic dominance in the 1970s and 80s led French director François Truffaut to label him a "one-man industry."

Born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in 1942, Bachchan is the son of the famed Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. He studied at Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. His cinematic journey began in 1969, narrating for the film Bhuvan Shome. By the 1970s, roles in films like Anand, Zanjeer, and Sholay solidified his reputation as India's "angry young man." His notable films from the 70s and 80s include Amar Akbar Anthony, Don, and Shakti. After a hiatus in the 1990s, he returned to prominence in the 2000s with films like Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Piku. In Piku, he earned his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor, a record achievement. He also featured in the Hollywood film, The Great Gatsby (2013).

Throughout his career, Bachchan has received numerous awards, including four National Film Awards for Best Actor and sixteen Filmfare Awards. Recognizing his contribution to the arts, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri (1984), Padma Bhushan (2001), Padma Vibhushan (2015), and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2018). France also honored him with its highest civilian award, Knight of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.

Apart from acting, Bachchan has been a playback singer, producer, and TV presenter. He hosted multiple seasons of India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" titled "Kaun Banega Crorepati." He briefly entered politics in the 1980s and is recognized for his humanitarian efforts. Beyond India, Bachchan has a significant international following, especially in regions like Africa, the Middle East, and the UK. He was voted the "greatest star of stage or screen" in a 1999 BBC poll and was dubbed the "Star of the Millennium" by TIME magazine in 2003.

Amitabh Bachchan's Journey: From Bankruptcy to KBC and the Changing Bonds of Friendship

Aanjjan Srivastav and Amitabh Bachchan shared a strong bond in the 90s, and their friendship began during the days of the movie "Shahenshah" when Aanjjan introduced Amitabh to his bank and helped him open an account there. However, things took a difficult turn for Amitabh before the launch of "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC).

During those times, there was a significant backlash against Amitabh, with protests and criticisms happening in Kolkata. Aanjjan visited the sets of "Toofan" to check on his friend, and he found Amitabh in a terrible state, both emotionally and due to an accident he had met with. People had accused him of financial mismanagement, mainly because of wrong bank statements related to his company, ABCL (Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited).

Aanjjan realized that Amitabh was innocent and had been misled by some people who provided false information to him. Instead of taking legal action, Aanjjan and his manager decided not to file any suits and trusted that Amitabh would repay the money when he could. They knew that his intentions were good and he had been unintentionally dragged into the matter.

Amitabh was deeply grateful for Aanjjan's support and immediately promised to return the money as soon as possible. However, Aanjjan assured him that they were not there to demand repayment and urged him to be cautious in his financial transactions with other banks.

Eventually, Amitabh returned all the money, but his company, ABCL, had suffered massive losses, and he faced bankruptcy. However, he made a remarkable comeback with the iconic show "Kaun Banega Crorepati."

Unfortunately, despite their strong bond, Aanjjan noticed a change in Amitabh's behavior after KBC. The once warm and inviting gestures from Jaya Bachchan and the family, including Holi celebrations, stopped. Their relationship turned sour, and Aanjjan suspected that some people from the theatre circle might have instigated Amitabh against him.

While this turn of events did not affect Aanjjan's career, it did hurt him to lose the connection he once had with Amitabh. Nonetheless, he cherished the memories of their friendship and the support he provided during Amitabh's challenging times.
