Lesson 19: A Lesson in Humility (John 3:22-30) | July 14, 2013

In a “Peanuts” cartoon, Linus tells Charlie Brown,

“When I get big, I’m going to be a humble little country doctor. I’ll live in the city, see, & every morning I’ll get up, climb into my sports car, & zoom into the country!

Then I’ll start healing people… I’ll heal people for miles around!”

In the last frame, he exclaims,

“I’ll be a world famous humble little country doctor!”

Charles Schultz, the cartoonist, was poking fun a how difficult it is for us to be humble. . We may start out with the goal of being a humble little whatever, but before we know it, we’re into being a world-famous, humble little whatever!

Pride is arguably the most deadly & evil of all sins because it’s at the root of all other sins.

Pride was probably Satan’s original sin, when he said, “I will make myself like the Most High”

[Isaiah 14:14, assuming this is describing Satan].

Pride was the bait Satan used to tempt Eve, when he set aside what GOD had said & assured her that if she ate of the forbidden fruit, she would be like GOD [Genesis 3:1-6].

Whenever I sin, I am arrogantly asserting that I know better than GOD knows what is best for me.

Thus, as Christians we must constantly battle pride & grow in humility.

And if you think you’ve attained any measure of humility, you’ve got to be on guard against being proud of your humility!

If anyone easily could have fallen into the trap of pride, it would have been John the Baptist.

Who else in human history [apart from JESUS HIMSELF] could claim to have been filled with the HOLY SPIRIT while still in his mother’s womb [Luke 1:15]!

No one else in human history had the important role of being the forerunner of Messiah [Luke 1:17, 76].

John enjoyed immediate popular success, as all Jerusalem, Judea, & those from surrounding areas were going out to him in the wilderness to confess their sins & be baptized [Matthew 3:5-6].

Even JESUS testified of John that he was the greatest man in human history [Matthew 11:11].

All these things could have fed the pride of this young prophet, barely in his thirties.

Yet in our text John gives his disciples & us a basic lesson in humility.

In the face of JESUS’ growing popularity & his own waning popularity, John gives us a one-liner to live by [John 3:30]:

“HE must increase, but I must decrease.”

Those words are a convenient outline in reverse of John 3:22-36:

“I must decrease” sums up 3:22-30; “HE must increase” sums up 3:31-36.

To the extent that John’s motto is true of us, we are growing in humility.

The story begins by describing two thriving ministries that were taking place close to one another.

We don’t know the exact location of JESUS & John as described here, but both were somewhere along the Jordan River, which they were using for baptisms.

As John clarifies in 4:2, JESUS was not actually performing the baptisms, but HIS disciples were.

These were not Christian baptisms at this point, but rather public confessions of sin followed by immersion in water, which symbolized cleansing from sin.

It’s interesting that even John Calvin, who practiced baptism as sprinkling, admits that the reference to

“much water” indicates that

JESUS & John were “plunging the whole body beneath the water”

[Calvin’s Commentaries [Baker], p.130]!

The apostle added the comment [3:24] that John had not yet been thrown into prison because he knew that his readers would have read Mark’s GOSPEL, which makes it seem that JESUS’ ministry began after John the Baptist was arrested [Mark 1:14].

The apostle John wants us to know that the events recorded here happened before John the Baptist’s imprisonment.

At this juncture [“therefore” in 3:25 is better translated “now” or “then,” indicating a transition to something new],

John reports that a dispute or discussion arose between John’s disciples & a Jew [some early manuscripts read “the Jews,” but the singular is probably original] about purification.

The apostle does not give us any further clarification, so we can only guess at the nature of the discussion.

Probably it had to do with whether John’s baptism was superior to the Jewish rites of purification.

John mentioned those Jewish rites with the water pots at the wedding where JESUS turned the water into wine [2:6].

In the present context, JESUS is the bridegroom [3:29].

HE comes to bring people into a joyous relationship with HIMSELF, not to haggle over Jewish ceremonies.

It’s not outward Jewish ceremonies that purify one’s heart, but rather, the new birth from above.

So John may want us to see here that JESUS’ ministry went beyond the ceremonial legalism of Judaism.

At any rate, the debate between John’s disciples & this Jew may have included the Jew’s comment that John the Baptist’s ministry was being eclipsed by JESUS’ growing ministry.

This led John’s disciples to come to him with their concern [3:26],

“Rabbi, HE who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, HE is baptizing & all are coming to HIM.”

Their exaggeration, “all are coming to HIM,” was no doubt spawned by resentment or jealousy

[D.A. Carson, The Gospel According to John [Eerdmans/Apollos], p. 210].

They were jealous on John’s behalf against JESUS’ growing ministry.

This sets the stage for John the Baptist’s reply [3:27-30], which is a great lesson in humility.

We learn:

Humility stems from understanding who GOD is & who we are.

John the Baptist clearly understood GOD’s sovereignty, who JESUS is, & who he [John] was.

Thus he didn’t have inflated views of himself.

He wasn’t out to build his self-esteem or to promote his own ministry or reputation.

His aim was to exalt JESUS.

He found great joy in his role of handing off the bride to the bridegroom.

We see this both with reference to John’s view of the FATHER & his view of JESUS CHRIST:

Why, to me, Adora didn't solve her trauma. Or at least, it was supposed to be only about that. Spoiler: anti Catradora and anti Glimbow. Please, this are just my opinions. Don't wish my death. These ships are canon anyways so yhhhh you won, ok? Everything is fine 🌈

Yh, I'm doing this very depressing, very akward and inappropriate post at last. With of course, a lot of self-centered story nobody wants to hear because I need examples to explain emotions. Hi.

So. I don't hate Catra. I vibe with her a lot. But I can't stand when people erase Adora's trauma saying Catra's was worse. Everyone has the right to experience their own sorrow. Pain is a subjective feeling.

I was always the Catra while my sister was the Adora. I was the nd who needed to go to the psychotherapist causing my family to spend money, not to mention other healt problems. My sister doesn't even wear glasses. I took three attempts to get a stupid car license and still have panic attacks when I need to drive. My sister is a talented pilot. I was more good at school than her, but she was always better at living. And you can't change that with anything.

Still, I never hated her. Nor was I jelous. I awlays loved her and will always do. We are very different but we balance eachother. You may think that she got it easy. She didn't.

My parents are amazing. And I love them, they never raised a hand on me. But it was hard. It's hard to love a kid everyone depicts as "creepy", "not normal". But they did.

I watched the episode with Catra and Adora's childhood flashback with my sister. We had goosebumps. Before that I believed I was the only one suffering, while in reality I wasn't. It's not easy being the "golden child", "the normal one" either. My sister was so used to being referred as "the non weird one" that she developed a very closed personalty. She is a ray of sunshine, always smiling, but she won't tell anyone if she is feeling bad. She has to be perfect. She has to be all right all the time. I tell her to open up, at least with me, but it's not easy.

Trauma can have many faces. And honestely I blame myself I lot for having caused this to her. If only my parents weren't so focused on me and my so many problems that started since the day I was born (so far I risked to die at least 4 times) they wouldn't have had so much stress. They would have focused more on my sister. We talked about this and she says it's not my fault and honestely after so many years I want to believe her.

Adora has a post traumatic response. She has a martyr syndrome so strong she even feels that sacrifing herself is the normal course of actions. "You deserve love too" means that you also deserve to be heard. Your feelings matter.

Now. *Sighs*. I don't hate Catra, but I don't like Catradora at all.

Another sad story.

I never liked in my life the troupe of the "best friends" who grow up togheter and are supposed to be soulmates. I don't believe in destiny. There's no superior order in life.

I always stood by his side when people bullied him for his frail body structure or because he couldn't swim (which in Sicily it's almost a disability). He never did the same for me.

We broke up badly. I wasn't the one who left him but anyways. We don't even say hello to eachother.

I know by some relatives of his (who adored me) that is he depressed and lonely now.

It's... hard. Not to care for him. I know I shouldn't, I don't even want to. But the sentiment is there. I was never enough for him while he was everything for me. I don't love him, I would say I even hate him (and to make me hate someone you really must work very hard). But...hate is an emotion too right?...the point is that he will forever be a part of me. Even if I wish we never met in the first place.

I don't have positive opinions on Glimbow either. I love Glimmer but dam she is possessive. I like Bow but he should have been more true with his feelings and not end up with her only to please her. Choose Sea Hawk or Perfuma.

I'm monogamus yes, but at least sexually speaking. In reality you should have experiences. Know other people to know yourself better.

It, again, may be my bad and traumatic relationship speaking. But said relationship never gave me positive personal growth. It was rather toxic.

Adora, dear. Humanity is not lost. But you can't save everyone. Not by risking your own happiness. Caring for somebody deeply and having sexual attraction for them...isn't enough. And you too Catra. Let it go, there are people out there (cough cough Scorpia) who can and will give you the world if only you let them. Give others a chance. Maybe you are not in love with a person, but with the memory and the idea you had of them. People change, it's not theirs or your fault.

People leave and you don't own them.

Nate, who's never met Wade, goes into future in search of Stryfe, but finds Stryfe's empire destroyed and only Wade, who was Stryfe's shackled prisoner. He believes Wade helped take down Stryfe, and brings Wade along to the present. Nobody knows Wade is Deadpool. The merc disappeared during Apocalypse's invasion. Now both are defeated, Cable goes back to lead X-force, inviting Wade to join. Logan notices Wade is Deadpool and alarms Cable about the him being Stryfe's spy. Nevertheless, Wade is recruited into the X-force. It doesn't take long for the members to realize Wade has a crush on Cable. When Cable met Wade in the future, Wade spent some time to regain the ability to talk. The first time his eyes were on Cable, he was in tears, and Nate supposed it was because he had been locked up for so long. But after putting everything together, Cable discovers that Wade chooses to go to Stryfe's future on purpose and starts to suspect Wade's intention. They have a fall-out when Nate finds some of his old photos in Wade's possession, calling into question of the reasons behind Wade's actions. Eventually Wade admits that he knows Cable in the past. Cable is surprised that Wade, who was once Deadpool, was previously rescued by him shortly after he first came to this timeline with future techs. He vaguely remembers healing a sick young man with terminal cancer. They start dating. An accident causes Cable to have to fix his TO-virus by operation, and soon after his powers grow. He asks Wade will it be good if he can bring heaven on earth with that much power, and Wade reacts badly. A red-head from another timeline approaches Nate and warns him of a bleak future of mutant extermination. She leaves the message that Nate should go find a baby at an exat date and location and then takes her to the future in case that ever happens. When he does according to that message, he is confronted with Wade who tries to stole the baby before him. In the battle, Hope reappears, helps Nate to beat Wade, and telepathically tells Nate that both she and Wade are not from this timeline. In her timeline, Cable and Deadpool were enemies in New-Mutant days, but became close allies during Providence. When Cable left with Hope for the future, Wade planned his own death with the serum to dampen regenrative factor. After Cable died saving Hope, Wade injected himself with the serum. He sent himself back to when he was about to be experimented by the Weapon-X, intending to kill off the staff of the program to prevent his past self from being transformed, and thus to end his miseries once and for all. However, instead of succeeding, Wade was rescued by the newly-arrived Cable and he survived cancer with regenerative factors running again. Wade decided to stay and help. He wanted Nate to live, so with his meddling, Providence never happened and Nate didn sacrifice himself. Future events was changed, too. Apocalypse came early, and he was beaten by the mutants. Worried about the future, Wade went to the timeline where Stryfe was and tried to compromise his empire. It didn't take long for Stryfe to put him to jail, and during incarceration he lost the sense of time. When Cable came to reacue him for a second time in this version of the world, Wade couldn't hold back feelings any more. He stays close to Nate because he's always loved Nate and wanted to protect him. Nate is shocked by the information Hope gives him. He asks Wade why he wouldn't let him escape to the future with baby Hope, and Wade says it would kill Nate, so he'd rather he goes. However, Hope learned if Nate doesn't do what he needs to the extermination of Mutant kind woule only occur later. She traveled back to find Nate before he adopts her to buy them more time before leaving. The chase has begun when the three of them have the baby and try to outrun their enemies. Wade teleported himself and enemies into a black hole. Safe and protected, Nate fathers baby Hope, watching her grow up year by year. He promises himself that he'll find Wade, and he knows he'd use all the time in the universe to do it.

Rhetorical Monday Thoughts

This is a rhetorical piece.

I was just standing and listening to the Without Fail podcast about the Western Baptist Church, the grand daughter who was demigogued into spewing the most horrifying comments about anyone who was not one of them, for her life ‘til her later 20’s.

She left the church and ended up marrying a guy she met on Twitter with whom she had profound conversations that changed the course of her life. She was saying at the end that she was stunned that this was her life now, that she was not protesting picket lines and part of that cult.

And as I heard that line I was standing in front of my bathroom mirror, looking at the lines etching my lips that have embedded themselves more fully. I am where I am physically. I am aging so clearly. There’s no question as to whether it can be seen. I can begin to see what I will look like at 60 and beyond. It is incredibly bizarre.

And I was thinking. Will I ever meet someone? Will I ever have that same thought as she did? I hate this question but it does come into my head. I generally run away from it in my head a few seconds after the fact because I know myself.

I’m not really cut out for a long term relationship. That’s never been my thing. The longest was 3 years; 2.8 of which were not good. So it’s not a feather in my cap that I stayed that long.

I’ve had more than I can count, seriously since I was 15.

I do think that I will never be with anyone and that’s a stark reality to hold. It makes my stomach drop and I feel intensely alone when I think about it; like there’s a flaw in me.

There is not, I know that and of course I sort of do not as well. I am me and that’s it. When you’re me or single at my age people do wonder why you’re single. They do; that’s just the way it is.

And often or not often but when I do have a brief encounter that seems like it might be promising and then it blows up it’s hard not to tow the critic line of “that’s because of something about you.” “You’re too much” “You’re this or that” or whatever criticism I can conjure, which are plenty.

I am really lucky in that I am surrounded by friends who are in very long term happy relationships/partnerships. They are actual best friends. Lots of them! It’s wonderful to be around and I never feel single when I’m with them. I just feel like me and then something will happen and I’ll connect with the fact that I’m single in this picture and it’s weird that it’s a given to everyone at this point. That is weird.

The oddity of my reality, I don’t feel on a daily basis, but I have been single for 8 years and that is still stunning.

I remember when I was in my late thirties and a friend telling me she hadn’t had sex with her partner for 8 years. I was astounded and horrified. I thought, there is something insanely fucked up with her. And there was of course. She finally got out and from what I gather from very afar, she found someone who is worthy and right.

As I write this there is a sort of visceral ache in my core about this singledom of mine.

I do wish it were different somewhere very deep inside. And I know exactly what would work for me, anything short of this is of no interest.

These would be the qualities: Incredible sense of humor, natural beauty, utter kindness, steadfastness, an ease and comfort with self, a total love for me in all my forms, an appreciation of my need for endless space and time; the comfort and joy of just being together without any plans or desire for them.

The idea of meeting that person that I can co-exist with in virtually any emotional or physical state is quite a thought. It might be a pipe dream but I can also see it.

That’s the oddity I feel. I have a strong sense unexplainable other than I feel it in some very deep spiritual way; like the flow of the wind.

I had two boyfriends in my life that filled those exat characteristics I named; so I know the experience. We just loved being together. They were kind and funny and into the coolest artistic shit. It was stimulating and relaxing and there was sort of a cloud of heaven around us. That’s what I’m looking for or rather waiting for to show up . I’m not looking. I don’t have that in me because it fundamentally makes zero sense. I know more than I know anything that if it’s coming, it’s coming without much effort on my part.

So I’ll do me; and there’s still a LOT to be done and maybe, just maybe that soul and spirit will show up, maybe. And if not, my life has been extraordinary and I also know will continue to be solo romantically or not.
