Snippet Sunday
I was tagged by @the-evil-stick, thank you!
Before Carthia could ask anything, the other person lowered the kerchief, and in the growing twilight, she could see what looked like blood on the light cloth.  “Who are you”, she asked, voice as firm as she could manage while her heart was still racing in her chest.  The other person lowered their hood, exposing a full head of wavy, dark hair and a woman’s face with features a little too strong to be called pretty.  “Not here”, the stranger whispered and gave one last look to the guard, who was still sitting on the cobblestones, eyes fixated upon the sky, gaze empty.  She turned around, into the small gap between the buildings, and Carthia inwardly cursed her curiosity as she set out to follow the woman, despite not even knowing her name.  They didn’t make it far, only through the gap and onto the next street, lined with closed shops and the red lights of various brothels, before the stranger turned towards Carthia and smiled.
You're getting a snippet from my Kenna Selborne/Carthia van Canthen fic, because I really like that one.
I'm tagging @gleamingsilence, @poetikat, @keirametzbrassknuckles and anyone else who wants to share some of their writing!

I believe we didn’t have enough time with Kenna Selborne, Boreas Mun, or Regis.
…I would like to propose a triadic friendship of crackship proportions. Two people who have at least some form of mind control, and Boreas, the smartest man in the entire series. (A very low bar, mind you.)
I think the world would end if it were to happen.

One of the most revolutionary events in English history, the Dissolution of the Monasteries (sometimes referred to as the Suppression of the Monasteries), was the set of administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541, by which King Henry VIII disbanded monasteries, priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland; in effect, sacking and looting them for their income, land and assets.
In order to grasp the impact of the Dissolution, it is necessary to understand that in the late 1530s there were nearly 900 religious houses in England (around 260 for monks, 300 for regular canons, 142 nunneries and 183 friaries). As such, some 12,000 people in total (4,000 monks, 3,000 canons, 3,000 friars and 2,000 nuns), were engaged in carrying out the functions of those religious houses. To put this in context: if the adult male population was 500,000, one adult man in fifty was in religious orders.
Henry was given authority by the Act of Supremacy, passed by Parliament in 1534, which made him Supreme Head of the Church in England, thus separating England from Papal authority; the King's position further strengthened by two Acts of Suppression (1536, and 1539). The policy was originally envisaged as increasing the regular income of the Crown, and much former monastic property was sold off in the 1540s to fund Henry's military campaigns; though by the time Henry VIII turned his mind to the business of monastic reform, royal action to suppress religious houses already had a history of more than 200 years.
The first case was that of the so-called, Alien Priories (some, merely agricultural estates with a single foreign monk in residence; others, rich foundations in their own right, such as Lewes Priory, which not only answered to Cluny of Paris, but sent money overseas, too).
Given the fairly constant state of war between England and France in the Late Middle Ages, the money sent to France by these Alien Houses was a matter of significant grievance in England. As such, the first sequestrations of the assets of the Alien Priories began under King Edward I, continued in the reign of Edward III, and still further continued by act of Parliament in 1414, under the authority of Henry V.
Money and land acquired by the Suppression greatly increased the royal purse, though some of it was also used to found educational foundations: most often setting up new colleges at both Oxford University and Cambridge University. Further instances, include: John Alcock (Bishop of Ely), acquiring the Benedictine nunnery of Saint Radegund to found Jesus College, Cambridge (1496), and William Waynflete (Bishop of Winchester), acquiring Selborne Priory in 1484 for Magdalen College, Oxford.
Dissolution of Monasteries was not an act exclusive to England. In 1521, Martin Luther published 'De votis monasticis' (On the monastic vows), a treatise declaring monastic life was not compatible with the true spirit of Christianity. In Sweden in 1527, King Gustavus Vasa secured an edict allowing him to confiscate any monastic lands he deemed necessary to increase royal revenues; and in Denmark in 1528, King Frederick I grabbed 15 of the houses of the wealthiest monasteries and convents.
King Henry VIII's chief political and legal architect in the Dissolutions was Thomas Cromwell (also instrumental in monastic suppressions instigated by Cardinal Wolsey); though Henry is also said to have been influenced by Desiderius Erasmus and Thomas More; both of whom ridiculed such monastic practices as repetitive formal religion and superstitious pilgrimages for the veneration of relics.
Most parish churches had been endowed with Chantries (each maintaining a priest to say mass for the souls of their donors), and these continued until they too were dissolved under the Chantries Act (of 1547), by Henry VIII's son, Edward VI.
Along with the destruction of the monasteries, the related destruction of the monastic libraries is said to have been on a catastrophic scale: Worcester Priory, for example (now Worcester Cathedral), had 600 books at the time of the dissolution; only six of them are known to have survived intact to the present day.
Similarly, the Abbey of the Augustinian Friars at York, had a library of 646 volumes, of which only three are known to have survived.

A letter Laurie wrote when he was seven years old. It is displayed in Gilbert White's House in Selborne, UK. Titus and his uncle Frank (the one who saw the Victoria Falls as fifth white dude in history and then promptly died due to malaria) have their exposition there.

I am perennially behind fandom chatter on tumblr parts, mostly cause my brain wants to move at the same speed as everyone else at the same time, but too much of my brain keeps me hanging back. today i am amply caffeinated and catching up with a great many fannish thoughts and feelings (and fic!).
but anyway. awhile back folks were talking about fantasy casting for the witcher books. and for me. i would love to see Ruth Negga as Kenna/Joanna Selborne. I really loved her in what I saw of Preacher and think she would make a great Kenna. also not for nothing but genderbend the casting of Regis so I can have Shoreh Agadashloo with thinning grey hair and vampire teeth. please. please. Her Regis monologue about the differences in human/vampire sexuality and mores would set my soul on fire. mwaghhh i would love it so much.

Minister of State for Defence Procurement Alex Chalk has confirmed that Elbit Systems UK, a subsidiary of Israel’s largest arms company Elbit Systems LTD, has been forced out of lucrative contracts to deliver training for Dreadnought submarine and Royal Navy crews. The Ministry of Defence has ejected Elbit from a contract worth £160m to deliver Dreadnought crew training, and is ‘negotiating the departure’ of Elbit from a £123m contract for ‘Project Selborne’ Royal Navy training, stating that Elbit now falls short of ‘operational sovereignty standards for the UK’s highest priority capabilities’.
These submissions were made by Chalk in Parliament in responses to questions by Labour MPs Chris Evans, and Kevan Jones – both associated with the ‘Labour Friends of Israel’ group – and by Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey. Elbit’s removal from these contracts was not in the public domain until these questions were asked. Release of this information further damaged Elbit Systems’ plummeting share prices, which fell 10% over November 29th, and is down 18% through November, as the company posts third quarter losses.
The loss of these contracts is a huge blow for Elbit, with their attempts to gain MOD favour a major reason for their manufacturing presence in Britain. These contracts were initially awarded after Elbit’s deep involvement in procurement and training for the Israeli defence, across army, navy, and air forces. Not only are Elbit’s manufactured products described as “field-tested on Palestinians”, but their training and simulation contracts have been gained following their performances in Israel, including delivering the ‘Brigade and Battlegroup Mission Training Centre‘.

☕ and 🌧️ for the October ask game!
Thank you so much for the asks! I'll answer these for the eversummer kingdom books, which seem to be turning into my perennial wip...
☕ coffee or tea: describe your OC’s favorite place to relax.
Merri- The sea means safety for her in a very literal way, as the salt and currents have a damping effect on magic (greatcraft). Her previous job was as a waybreaker through the Rift, an unnavigable borderland between Evesmere and the more mundane Gristerre. The Rift is heavily permeated with magic, so being somewhere it can only exist in highly reduced form is a strong source of comfort.
Other than that, I think she'd prefer to spend time with the people she cares about rather than go off on her own, and she doesn't really have a strong preference where that time is spent.
Yulia- Absolutely needs her space. Her favorite place to relax is her woodworking shop where she carves masks, or in her garden when the weather's nice enough. (Though, I can definitely imagine her hiking up her skirts and enjoying going barefoot in the mud in the summer rains). She's someone who needs to keep her hands busy, so any project she can really get into while alone is fair game.
Val - Training yard at Selborne. She's an incredibly strategic person, so just purely focusing on the movement of her body and weapons provides some relief to the constant scheming and planning she does otherwise.
🌧️ rain: share a sad or emotional scene from your wip!
“What beautiful lies you always tell.”
She flung the remnant of greatcraft down in Merri’s lap, a shriveled, blackened lump devoid of any power or potency.
“Do you believe them yourself, or are they just a means to an end?”
Merri sat with her head bowed, her hands were still bound behind her. She made no sign that she had heard, or was even aware she was not alone.Yulia did not want her silence.
“Was I a means to an end?”
She bent and pressed two fingers under her chin. Merri’s head lifted slowly, her dark eyes met Yulia’s. For a heartbeat Yulia almost recoiled, there was no hint of the usual warmth, the mischievous light, she’d grown accustomed to. Her resolve wavered, and hardened once more. The smell of burnt sugar still clung to her, bitterer by far than the acrid sting of spent magic. In her mind there was a voiceless song and a new, gaping wound of memory, all because of the woman in front of her.
She looked for the cruelest thing she could say. “Did they know they died for nothing?”
Merri flinched at this. “Yules - please.” Her voice was barely more than a whisper. “I’m sorry. I wanted, I wanted to help you. It all happened so fast.”
Yulia stumbled away from her. Merri licked her lips and went on, a little stronger this time.
“I can make this right. Just a little more time to convince the Lady-Captain. We’ll get a ship to take us far across the sea, far away from the Rift and curses.” She smiled faintly, “Somewhere we can find dragons.”
“Enough.” Yulia pressed her fingers to her temples. “Just stop. We found the dragons here, Merri. They’re monsters, just like the stories always said. I’m not running, alright?”
She took a shaky breath, just barely managed to control her voice.
“My dead know I forgot them, I can’t abandon them, too.”
“Your dead - what about you?” A faint pleading note entered Merri’s voice, “I can’t do this without you.”
“There you go again.”
Yulia slipped the key out of her sleeve and knelt in front of her. With a few deft movements she unlocked the chains, taking care that the iron did not touch Merri’s bare skin. She heard Merri let out a barely audible sigh of relief, and stood, backing towards the door of the cell.
“I love you; soon I’ll forget you. I suggest you do the same.”
