C.H. Lippincott, Pioneer Seedswoman of Minneapolis
In 1886, Carrie H. Lippincott, a 25-year-old, single Minneapolis woman, in desperate need of money, launched what would become one of the most successful national seed businesses of the era. She was so successful, two Minneapolis seedswoman rivals soon popped up to compete for business—but Carrie had suspicions.
“My friends have urged me to print my latest picture, because a number of seedsmen (shall I call them men?) have assumed women’s names in order to sell seeds…I have devoted my best energies in the past eight years to building up this business and I have been successful. I have proved that a woman can do business.” - Carrie H. Lippincott, in her 1899 seed catalog
Miss Lippincott’s success is attributed to the fact that she sold exclusively flower seeds, which attracted a primarily female audience.
“I love flowers and I know that they make woman and the home happier and better; they brighten the dark pathways of life.” – Carrie H. Lippincott
Tumblr media
Emma V. White, The Other Seedsman
Emma V. White Co. was one such company that Carrie Lippincott believed was actually run by a man. Emma White, was a real person, and was active in the women’s axillary of the Minnesota Horticultural Society. White lived with her cousin, who was married to the secretary of the Minnesota Horticultural Society, Augustus B. Latham, partner in the realty firm White & Latham. Carrie, and others, believed Mr. Latham was running the seed business, though there is no proof. Emma V. White Co. did outlive Mr. Latham.
See more local garden-related photographs and materials from the Hennepin County Library Special Collections in the exhibit The Seeds of Spring, on View at Nokomis Library through May. See a smaller version of the exhibit at Minneapolis Central Library through June. The above images are from undigitized seed catalogs in the Trade Catalog Collection.

September 10th 1771 saw the birth of Mungo Park at Foulshiels, near Selkirk.
He grew up on a tenant farm in Selkirkshire, the seventh child of a well-to-do farmer, at 17 years old, he abandoned the family farm to pursue his education and attend the renowned University of Edinburgh. It is undoubtedly not a coincidence that the soon-to-be-famous Park was studying at the University of Edinburgh during the Age of Enlightenment in Scotland. Some of Park’s earlier contemporaries at the university included, whether as students or faculty, such famous Scottish thinkers and philosophers as David Hume, Adam Ferguson, Gershom Carmichael and Dugald Stewart.
With a medical diploma and a desire for fame and fortune, Park set off for London, and through his brother-in-law, William Dickson, a Covent Garden seedsman, he got his opportunity. An introduction to Sir Joseph Banks, a famed English botanist, and explorer who had circumnavigated the world with Captain James Cook.
In 1795, Park, with the support of England’s Africa Society, set off in search of the Niger and the fabled city of Tellem. Park and his team of 30 men sailed down the east coast of Africa to the mouth of the River Gambia, where the English had established a fort. After a trip down the Gambia and an overland trek through dense jungle, the team reached the Niger. By then, however, Park had run out of money and was forced to return home without finding Tellem.
Park spent the next decade raising funds and organizing a team for a second expedition to Tellem. Finally, in 1805, the Scotsmen embarked, fully confident in his mission’s success. Park and his team returned to the Niger, where they piled into canoes and paddled south in search of Tellem. None of them were ever heard from again.
If you want to know what happened to Park you will have to read the account on Alchetron here https://alchetron.com/Mungo-Park-(explorer)

❗❗❗Long ask jumpscare warning ❗❗❗
idk if you still want asks but I thought I would talk about my 14-year-old self's extremely self-indulgent edgelord. He's changed a lot but I still adore him.
His name is Wencen Loresaris, he's my Snow Elf rogue. I've probably talked about him before, but I wanted to talk about his gimmick.
Lore's character gimmick is that he's several cryptids in the various regions of Skyrim, later being both Listener and Guildmaster. No one knows that these entities are one person.
Some behavioral context; Lore is always on the move, and kills people who look at him for too long. The more they see, the more they can describe, and then they can notice patterns. Patterns lead to conclusions, and conclusions will lead to his own death. Kids are the only exception. Everyone else has to die. Also, Lore operates at night. In the day, he rests in caves, sometimes sharing the space with an animal. He also uses nature magic that is unfamiliar to
Secrecy + old, forgotten nature magic he uses to get by + being centuries old himself = folklore.
In Hjaalmarch, he's considered a good omen and protector. He guides lost children home by taking the illusory form of a wolf and sheparding them back to Morthal. This led to him being called Fenrisulfr, which means 'Swamp wolf'. As thanks, locals started leaving offerings in a ruin up north. After that, the next harvests were especially bountiful. Due to his protection of children and the wolf motifs, he's seen as an aspect or spirit of Mara. It's custom for newly-weds to make a pilgrimage to Fenrisulfr's ruins and leave some of the wedding dowry.
Falkreath considers him a specter of Sithis that takes souls into the void. The Brotherhood operating in the area enforces the idea. Rather than being a reaper, he's the Seedsman, as flowers sprout in graveyards when he's in the area. They're used to death imagery, but the shadow in the cemetery is seen as someone being taken from you a second time, and the flowers are from the person's true and final passing-on. As such, they feel bitterness towards the Seedsman, even if they honor that its his duty. The flowers left are thought to indicate what kind of person the deceased was in life. Black dahlias always grow from the graves of Companions. Falkreath seeks their mercenary work elsewhere, in recent centuries.
He is most feared in the Rift. Remember that bit about Lore being nocturnal, couch-surfing with animals in the day, and killing people if they make too much contact?
The Rift is popular hunting ground. Hunters tend to track their prey—which is typically nocturnal and asleep in the day—back to their caves.
Getting netted, shot, or dogs sicced on you by a pack of hunters—while you're sleeping—is considered too much contact for Lore.
The impact was the lack of witnesses or survivors. The only evidence of something killing hunters, was the hunters' journals. Sometimes one or two get away, and write about the Thing they disturbed. It's only a matter of time before the Thing catches up to them. Search parties only find a shakily-written tale of an odd, not-of-this-world Thing. This creature was called the Something. Veteran Rift hunters know to go for their prey in the open, rather than by surprise in its sleep.
When told these legends, Lore is known to laugh, cough politely, and remember he has an errand.
edgelords are the best kind of oc's imo i don't care if that's controversial we all need a good edgelord. we also just need more falmer oc's. I love every single falmer oc I come across.
I love that you incorporated like, rituals with him being a cryptid cause he could just be like, a normal cryptid that people just whisper about but firstly nords love them some rituals and practices so that makes sense, but also it adds so much depth to his role as a cryptid.
i wish i was a cryptid in real life, he really is living my dream life i'm so jealous

September 10th 1771 saw the birth of Mungo Park at Foulshiels, near Selkirk.
Mungo Park was the seventh child of a well-to-do farmer. He was apprenticed to a local surgeon and undertook medical studies in Edinburgh. With a medical diploma and a desire for fame and fortune, Park set off for London, and through his brother-in-law, William Dickson, a Covent Garden seedsman, he got his opportunity. He was introduced to Sir Joseph Banks, a famed English botanist and explorer who had circumnavigated the world with Captain James Cook.
A life of adventure appealed to him, so he volunteered his services to the "African Association", a scientific organization dedicated to the exploration of the interior of West Africa.
At the time of Mungo's first journey, the interior of the continent of Africa was entirely unknown, due to very difficult traveling conditions and the lack of navigable rivers. According to the natives, it was said that a great river, called the Niger flowed between the Gulf of Guinea and the Sahara, but it was not known whether it flowed east or west, or whether it joined with any other rivers.
The mouth of the Niger, in modern Nigeria, formed a delta so broad and marshy that it was not recognized as the mouth of a great river. The natives claimed that the Niger was a major trading route and there were stories of wealthy and mysterious cities on it, such as Timbuktu, that no white man had ever seen. The idea of exploring the region was very intriguing, but the climate was so deadly and the traveling conditions so difficult, no white man had succeeded in penetrating the area.
After becoming acclimated to the region, Mungo set out with a small group of native guides from the Gambia river, one of the few navigable rivers in Africa. From that point, they journeyed on land, and succeeded in reaching the Niger near its western source. He followed its course over 300 miles to the east before returning over much of the same route he had come.
His three year journey was fraught with difficulties and dangers and he was imprisoned and nearly perished on several occasions. The full story of his travels was captured in his book, Travels in the Interior of Africa, which became on his return an immediate best-seller.
After four years back in Scotland Mungo agreed to return to Africa with the purpose of following the Niger all the way to its mouth,  he proposed to learn Arabic, the language of trade in the region. On his second journey he traveled with a large party including both Europeans and natives.
The second journey proved to be a disaster since it was far more difficult to travel with a large group than a small one. Many of the Europeans became sick and died, the natives were hostile to the large, armed group, and provisions were more difficult to come by. Within a year a large number of the party had died, and Mungo's last communication was dated near the end of 1805.
Some time afterward the story was told of Mungo's fate. He and the remaining group had reached the Niger and successfully traveled many miles by boat. Eventually there boat was lost in the rapids, and they were attacked by unfriendly natives. Only a single native guide survived the journey.
You can read the whole story with full details of how he met his end here https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Mungo_Park
Pics include his statue in Selkirk and  Monument to him at Jebba , Kwara State, Nigeria

Elevate Your Cannabis Cultivation with Autoflower Cannabis Seeds for Sale
Cannabis cultivation has evolved significantly over the years, and one of the most exciting developments in the world of growing cannabis is the availability of autoflower cannabis seeds. These seeds offer a unique and convenient way to cultivate your own cannabis, whether you're a seasoned grower or just starting out. In this guide, we'll explore the benefits of autoflower cannabis seeds and where you can find high-quality autoflower seeds for sale.
Tumblr media
The Magic of Autoflower Cannabis Seeds
Autoflower cannabis seeds are the result of decades of selective breeding and hybridization. Unlike traditional cannabis seeds, which rely on changes in light cycles to transition from the vegetative to flowering stage, autoflower seeds have been engineered to flower automatically, independent of light conditions.
Here are some of the key benefits of autoflower cannabis seeds:
Speedy Growth: Autoflowering plants have a significantly shorter growth cycle compared to their photoperiod counterparts. They typically go from seed to harvest in as little as 8 to 10 weeks, making them an excellent choice for those who want a quicker turnaround.
Year-Round Cultivation: Autoflowering plants can be grown year-round, both indoors and outdoors. They are not dependent on specific light cycles, which means you can cultivate multiple crops in a single season.
Compact Size: Autoflowering plants tend to be more compact in size, making them suitable for indoor cultivation, smaller outdoor spaces, and discreet growing.
Beginner-Friendly: If you're new to cannabis cultivation, autoflower seeds are an excellent choice. They are more forgiving of mistakes and fluctuations in light, temperature, and humidity, making the learning curve less steep.
Stealthy and Discreet: Due to their smaller size and faster growth cycle, autoflowering plants are a great option for those looking to grow cannabis discreetly.
Multiple Harvests: With autoflower seeds, you can stagger your planting and harvest times, ensuring a continuous supply of fresh cannabis throughout the year.
Where to Find High-Quality Autoflower Cannabis Seeds
When it comes to purchasing autoflower cannabis seeds, it's essential to source them from reputable and trustworthy seed banks or breeders. Here are a few options for finding high-quality autoflower seeds for sale:
Online Seed Banks: Many reputable seed banks offer a wide selection of autoflower cannabis seeds. Websites like ILoveGrowingMarijuana, Seedsman, and Crop King Seeds are known for their quality genetics and discreet shipping.
Local Dispensaries: Some local dispensaries and grow shops may carry autoflower seeds. Visit your nearest cannabis store or contact them to inquire about their seed selection.
Seed Expos and Cannabis Events: Attend cannabis-related events, expos, or trade shows in your area. You might come across reputable breeders who offer autoflower seeds for sale.
Grower Communities: Online grower communities and forums are excellent places to connect with experienced growers who may be willing to share or trade autoflower seeds.
Direct from Breeders: Some cannabis breeders sell their seeds directly to the public. Research well-known breeders, check their websites, and reach out to inquire about purchasing autoflower seeds.
Choosing the Right Autoflower Strain
Autoflower cannabis seeds come in a wide variety of strains, each with its own unique characteristics in terms of flavor, aroma, and effects. Here are a few considerations when choosing the right autoflower strain for your cultivation:
Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid: Determine whether you prefer the relaxing, body-focused effects of indica, the uplifting and energizing effects of sativa, or a balanced hybrid strain.
Flavor and Aroma: Think about the flavors and aromas you enjoy. Autoflower strains can have a wide range of profiles, from fruity and sweet to earthy and spicy.
THC and CBD Content: Consider the cannabinoid content of the strain. Some strains are high in THC for a more potent experience, while others have balanced THC and CBD levels for a more therapeutic effect.
Yield and Size: Assess the expected yield and size of the plant, especially if you have space constraints. Some autoflower strains are compact and discreet, while others can be larger and more productive.
Grow Difficulty: If you're a beginner, choose a strain known for being easy to grow. Experienced growers may opt for more challenging strains that offer unique characteristics.
Cultivating Autoflower Cannabis
Cultivating autoflower cannabis seeds is relatively straightforward, even for beginners. Here's a basic guide to get you started:
Germination: Start by germinating your autoflower seeds. This can be done by placing them in a damp paper towel or using a germination kit. Once they have sprouted, carefully transplant them into your chosen growing medium (soil or hydroponics).
Lighting: Autoflowering plants thrive under a minimum of 18 hours of light per day. If you're growing indoors, invest in quality grow lights that provide the necessary light spectrum for optimal growth.
Nutrients and Feeding: Use a balanced nutrient schedule tailored to the specific needs of your plants. Autoflowers tend to be less nutrient-demanding than photoperiod strains, but they still benefit from proper feeding.
Training: Some growers choose to apply low-stress training (LST) or high-stress training (HST) techniques to optimize the canopy and maximize light exposure to all buds.
Harvesting: Autoflowers have a set timeframe for flowering, usually around 8 to 10 weeks from seed. You can determine the optimal time to harvest by closely monitoring the trichomes on the buds. Most growers prefer harvesting when the trichomes are cloudy with a few amber ones for a balanced effect.
Drying and Curing: Once harvested, dry your cannabis buds in a controlled environment with proper ventilation and humidity levels. After drying, follow the curing process to enhance flavor, aroma, and potency.
