Hi! My friend and I are getting into hockey and we’re kind of wondering what the vibe on Max Domi is?? I’m kind of seeing mixed messages about him so we were wondering why you like him so we can figure out what his deal is and if we should try to pay attention to him more on the leafs. Thanks!

hi anon!! just wanna say before i get going that i’m in love with this ask and you by extension for asking, and i’m sorry this took me so long!

now on to the propaganda (this is long i’m not sorry)

i’m obligated to preface this by saying i’m hugely biased as a Leafs fan who grew up in Southern Ontario. my dad has always been a pretty big Tie Domi fan, so liking Max just seemed like a natural continuation of that.

born March 2nd, 1995, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, one month before Tie was traded (back) to the Leafs, Max spent his childhood in Mississauga, Ontario, roughly half an hour west of Toronto. at the age of 12, following some health complications at a hockey tournament in Detroit, blood work revealed that Max had type 1 diabetes and celiac disease.

not the end of the world, clearly, but a pretty significant shock for a kid with aspirations of greatness. of course, he was able to manage it, with time, and when i finally read his book i’ll tell y’all more about it i promise.

scored a hatty in his OHL debut (slay). won consecutive OHL championships with the London Knights in 2012 and 2013 (double slay). selected 12th overall by the Phoenix (now Arizona) Coyotes, and signed a three year ELC (!). won gold with Team Canada at the 2015 WJC, and was named the tournament’s best forward (huge W). traded to the Montréal Canadiens in 2018, to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2020, to the Carolina Hurricanes (via the Florida Panthers) at the trade deadline of March 31st 2022, to the Chicago Blackhawks in July of 2022, to the Dallas Stars in March 2023, and finally signed as a free agent to our beloved Toronto Maple Leafs on July 2nd 2023. he’s been on seven different NHL teams since he was drafted.

sadly, as i’ve only been a hockey fan for one calendar year, i cannot provide much insight into his time with NHL teams other than the Leafs. i have ordered and am waiting for his book to come in so i can better rotate him in my mind, but i encourage anyone who knows more about his other teams’ lore to add to this post or send me what you know, so i can share it with the world. (pls i wanna know everything about him ever)

what i can say is that him and Mitch Marner were teammates on the London Knights for two seasons, (13-14 and 14-15), the second of which saw Max as captain and Mitch as an alternate captain. the season after, Mitch was named captain in Max’s stead. seeing them back together on the Leafs brings joy to my little London Knights heart.

now back to him as a Leaf.

the first five of these are pretty much to be expected, but there’s my close good friend Max Domi right there too :) he’s doing his part, and even if he’s not the biggest scorer, assists are just as important and valuable :) if i have to kill y’all with positivity for this i will :) i love him dearly :)

also, he currently sits at 389 career points, and he’s nowhere near done, while Tie Domi earned 245 points in his entire career of 1020 games. nobody can say shit to me about him not living up to his dad’s legacy (Note: Tie also sits at third in NHL history for penalty minutes with 3515, but that’s a stat nobody will ever surpass. ever. the current PIM leader in the NHL is Corey Perry, and he only has 1392.)

and now i’m not about to sit here and pretend i know how to quantify the skills of an NHL player, let alone describe them in great detail. i do not. however, what i do know is that i love watching him play and make plays. in my eyes, he is a good player, and this is the Max Domi Propaganda Blog so if you want something less biased i can’t help you, sorry :’)

this love began in a preseason game against the Habs, on Oct 2nd. his first game as a Leaf in Toronto, he scores a tip-in against his former team, and he shrugs it off like NBD. for those of you who were following me at the time, you know i was not normal about it then and i am not normal about it now. i think about that celly every goddamn day.

much to my great sorrow, they Leafed this game up and lost in OT 5-4. but either way, this was the moment that definitively kicked off the Rick eastoncowan Domishka era.

and the only time Max ever seems to get a scoring chance, it’s either on a breakaway or from a spot that would have been absolutely NASTY if it went in. my mans only wants sexy goals, which is a stance i respect immensely.

his first regular season goal… didn’t give him any points. it was beautiful, and a game winner, but since it happened in a shootout, it didn’t count towards his points totals. personally, i think this is bullshit, but now is neither the time nor the place for me to get into my issues with some of the NHL’s rules. (Nov 10, 2023, Flames @ Leafs)

now i’m not going to go back and gif all 18 of his assists, because i don’t think y’all care quite that much about Visual Proof of all of them. for your convenience, though, i did go back and track down whose goals he had assisted on, and the results aren’t super surprising IMO

anyway, now for what is quite possibly my favourite game that i didn’t actually get to watch live.

December 16, 2023, Penguins @ Leafs, a decisive 7-0 victory.

it was also a 3 point night for Max, two of which helped to complete Matthew Knies’ Gordie Howe hat trick, the first since Daniel Winnik in 2015. but a goal and an assist are only two parts of it, the third being a fight. a fight which Knies initiated against John Ludvig after he knocked out yet another of Max’s front teeth with his stick. a fight which was Knies’ first ever. i’m still mad i didn’t see this happen live, but i’ve rewatched the game in its entirety twice, and the highlights too many times to count. this game sparked my undying love for the 23-11-16 line, which is a line i still pray keefe will bring back.

and so, we have a goal and a fight, and we have an assist to finish off the hat trick, and none of it would have happened without Max :)

and speaking of fights, Max has had a couple of em himself in his time as a Leaf so far. granted, if you ask hockeyfights dot com, he didn’t win either of them, but that’s not what matters. what matters is that he looked beautiful doing it, whether it was against Ian Cole (VAN) or Sam Bennett (FLA), especially with the fun added bonus of him flexing his full head of hair at Bennett’s bald dome. as an aside, i fucking hate Sam Bennett, so Max trying to fight him was… well it made me feel things. all i’m gonna say.

max’s third goal was also gorgeous. stunning. amazing. another beautiful bardown, the sound of which lives on in my dreams.

this is getting far longer than it really needs to be, so i’ll take a step back and give you my true, honest thoughts.

Max Domi has been a very helpful player for the Leafs since he got here. he obviously has the drive to play here and to play well here, and 21 points is nothing to be ashamed of. you know who else has 21 points as of me writing this? Alex Ovechkin. and now i’m not saying they are players of the same caliber, but Max is 6th on the Leafs in points, and Ovi is tied for first on the Caps. 21 points is still 21 points, no matter where in the standings someone is. Max was born to be a Leaf, and nothing makes me happier than to see him here and thriving on the team he’s loved since he was a kid. he takes shots, blocks shots, defends his boys and is defended right back in turn.

and i would not be Rick eastoncowan if i didn’t mention that i think he is hot. like stupid hot. especially without his teeth. fuck, the heart wants what the heart wants, and damn if my heart doesn’t want this tiny toothless idiot.

I love spicy, of course, jalapeno, chili, and other spicy peppers

not against wasabi and horseradish (although for me they mostly differ in the burn duration and resting speed)

As Alex Jones continues telling his Infowars audience about his money problems and pleads for them to buy his products, his own documents show life is not all that bad — his net worth is around $14 million and his personal spending topped $93,000 in July alone, including thousands of dollars on meals and entertainment. The conspiracy theorist and his lawyers file monthly financial reports in his personal bankruptcy case, and the latest one has struck a nerve with the families of victims of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. They're still seeking the $1.5 billion they won last year in lawsuits against Jones and his media company for repeatedly calling the 2012 massacre a hoax on his shows. “It is disturbing that Alex Jones continues to spend money on excessive household expenditures and his extravagant lifestyle when that money rightfully belongs to the families he spent years tormenting,” said Christopher Mattei, a Connecticut lawyer for the families. “The families are increasingly concerned and will continue to contest these matters in court.” In an Aug. 29 court filing, lawyers for the families said that if Jones doesn’t reduce his personal expenses to a “reasonable” level, they will ask the bankruptcy judge to bar him from “further waste of estate assets,” appoint a trustee to oversee his spending, or dismiss the bankruptcy case. On his Infowars show Tuesday, Jones said he’s not doing anything wrong. “If anything, I like to go to nice restaurants. That is my deal. I like to go on a couple of nice vacations a year, but I think I pretty much have earned that in this fight,” he said, urging his audience to donate money for his legal expenses. Jones' spending in July, which was up from nearly $75,000 in April, included his monthly $15,000 payment to his wife, Erika Wulff Jones — payouts called “fraudulent transfers” by lawyers for the Sandy Hook families. Also that month, Jones spent $7,900 on housekeeping and dished out more than $6,300 for meals and entertainment, not including groceries, which totaled nearly $3,400 — or roughly $850 per week. A second home, his Texas lake house, cost him nearly $6,700 that month, including maintenance and property taxes, while his vehicles and boats sapped another $5,600, including insurance, maintenance and fuel. Sandy Hook families won nearly the $1.5 billion in judgments against Jones last year in lawsuits over repeated promotion of a false theory that the school shooting that killed 20 first graders and six educators in Newtown, Connecticut, never happened. Relatives of the victims testified at the trials about being harassed and threatened by Jones' believers, who sent threats and even confronted the grieving families in person, accusing them of being “crisis actors” whose children never existed. As of 1 February 2022

TzTok Jad was the strongest monster in the game almost three years ago. Its name roughly translates as "Obsidian Fire Elements".

TzTok Jad must be defeated by players on their own, without the help of summoning creatures and a dwarf multicannon. Players must eliminate 271 other monsters before fighting Jad, resulting in a significant use of ammunition, food, potions and prayers, among others.

TzTok-Jad is strong enough to pose a danger to any unprepared or inexperienced player, regardless of their skill or equipment.

A player might be assigned an assignment of TzHaar monsters in Kuradal and the requirement to "Upgrade" your task. If you do, you will be given the task being assigned to Volcanic Creatures. You can choose to take on the Fight Cave from TzTok Jad for a special reward. This reward is 25,000 Slayer experience, which is not counting the base reward of 1,309 experience.

Likewise, a player may receive 1-4 TzTok-Jads in part of a Soul Reaper task. The Fight Caves can take a while for players so the TokHaar and TzekHaar versions of TzTokJads could be killed in their place.

As of 1 February 2022

TzTok-Jad was the strongest monster in the game for almost three years. Its name can be roughly translated as "Obsidian fire elemental".

TzTok Jad must be fought by players on their own with the aid of Summoning creatures and a dwarf multicannon. Players must defeat 271 other monsters before they can fight Jad which results in a significant use of food, potions, ammunition and prayers, among others.

TzTokJad is strong enough to pose a risk to any inexperienced or unprepared player, regardless of skill or equipment.

A player might be assigned an assignment of TzHaar monsters from the city of Kuradal and the requirement to "Upgrade" your task. If you do, you will be given the task being assigned to Volcanic Creatures. This means you can opt to kill through the Fight Cave all the way to TzTok-Jad for a special reward of 25,000 Slayer experience (not the base reward of 1,309 experience), in addition to any experience gained from the Caves.

If passed, the bill would have required the media and NGOs even partly financed from abroad to register as “agents of foreign influence.” It would also have compromised Georgia’s entry into the E.U. and NATO. Intensive protests in Tbilisi finally forced Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, to back down in trying to push the bill through the parliament. Nevertheless, the activities of the majority party and its derivative movement, People’s Power, are unlikely to stop at this failed initiative. A ‘transparency’ bill with murky origins

In June 2022, three deputies left Georgian Dream, the Republic of Georgia majority parliamentary party, explaining that they’d like to “talk to each other more.” By October, they announced that they had founded a new political movement, christened “People’s Power.” Shortly afterwards, the new movement’s founders — Dimitri Khundadze, Sozar Subari, and Mikheil Kavelashvili — were joined by five more former Georgian Dream legislators.

Since its inception in 2012, Georgian Dream had been the main competitor to Mikheil Saakashvili’s United National Movement, while claiming a largely similar agenda: restoring Georgia’s territorial integrity, popularizing Western values, and hastening integration into the E.U. and NATO. At the same time, Georgian Dream actively strove to improve the country’s relations with Russia. Under the leadership of the ultra-rich Bidzina Ivanishvili (who became the party’s chairman in 2018), Georgian Dream began to interact with Moscow on policy questions, resumed transportation across the border between the two states, and renewed Georgian wine exports to Russia.

Georgian Dream denies taking any part in the creation of People’s Power. At the same time, it makes no secret of sharing many of its policy views. Meanwhile, People’s Power presents itself as an opposition force whose aim is to stop Georgia’s kowtowing to the United States that Georgian Dream allegedly couldn’t stop. Its second professed aim is to achieve a greater degree of transparency in Georgian politics.

Crucially, since the founders of People’s Power did not forfeit their legislative mandates when leaving Georgian Dream, they have kept their right to submit bills for consideration by the Georgian parliament.

On February 14 this year, People’s Power submitted a draft bill on “transparency in foreign influence,” proposing the creation of a “foreign agent” register for non-profits and media that receive more than a fifth of their funding from abroad. Being on the register would require these organizations to submit financial statements to a special authority, the National Agency of Public Registry (NAPR). The agency would also maintain and update the “foreign agent” list. Evading registration would entail fines, roughly equal to $4,000–$7,600.

It’s all about choices, or is it not?

People’s Power and the bill’s proponents have repeatedly stressed that the point of the draft legislation was to “inform” the public about “foreign influence,” as opposed to infringing on the media and NGOs. They also tried to normalize the bill by comparing it to the U.S. Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA), claiming that the Georgian bill was a much softer version of the American legislation, adapted to suit the country’s transparency needs.

Adopted in 1938 to curb the Nazi propaganda and signed into law by Franklin D. Roosevelt, FARA requires “foreign agents” (that is, entities representing the political or quasi-political interests of another state) to keep the state informed about their finances and their relations with foreign governments. FARA defines “foreign agents” as individuals and organizations receiving all of their financing, or the bulk of it, from abroad. Neglecting to register as a foreign agent can potentially lead to fines of up to $10,000, or up to five years in prison. FARA also requires that propaganda materials published by a foreign agent be marked accordingly. In practice, though, no one complies with this requirement. As of November 2022, the U.S. had more than 500 registered “foreign agents.”

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price has been skeptical about comparisons between the Georgian “foreign agent” bill and FARA, saying that the former was styled not so much after FARA as after the Russian and Hungarian foreign agent laws. People’s Power parried his criticisms by pointing out that, unlike FARA, the proposed bill didn’t use “rude” and stigmatizing language: instead of the term “foreign agent,” the Georgian bill talked civilly about “agents of foreign influence.” It also limited foreign agency to corporations and had no provisions for prison time in case of non-compliance. As if to drive the point home, on February 22, People’s Power unveiled an alternative, “American” version of the bill, which expanded the scope of foreign agency to individuals and introduced prison terms as a possible penalty for non-compliance. Labeled “the Georgian version” and “the American version,” the two variants of the bill were presented to the parliament, framing the debate as a “choice” between one and the other.

On February 27, the head of Georgian Dream, Irakli Kobakhidze, declared that the party was intent on approving both versions of the foreign agent bill in the first reading. The party’s further plan was to pass the draft legislation to the Venice Commission, asking it simply to pick the preferable version as the basis for its feedback. At the same time, Kobakhidze stressed that, as an advisory body, the Venice Commission had no power to stop Georgia from adopting the law in one version or another.

Georgia’s constitution and the country’s future

The irony of the “foreign agent” bill widely criticized for its “pro-Russian” agenda is that it’s been completely opaque about the foreign influences that helped conceive it. Amid accusations that, by compromising Georgia’s entry into the E.U. and NATO, the bill would serve Russia’s geopolitical interests, the bill’s champions denied any cognizance of why the draft law should be associated with the Kremlin’s influence. Georgian Dream Secretary and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, for example, objected to parallels with Russian legislation, instead highlighting the bill’s similarity to FARA:

The draft law is trailing this talk about how it’s a Russian bill. In reality, no one has explained why it’s Russian, and why it isn’t American, for example. If this works so well in the U.S., why can’t we try this out in Georgia? Why should it be a bad law?

Going even further, parliamentary speaker Shalva Papuashvili called criticism of the bill “anti-democratic.” “Certain groups,” he said, referring to the opposition parties objecting to the bill, “wish to make it taboo to talk about the need for transparency and accountability in Georgia. I have always said, and continue to say, that our citizens have a right to know the people who make public decisions and [access] information about them, be it financial or any other kind.”

But others, notably President Salome Zurabishvili, believed it was, in fact, the “foreign agent” bill that would compromise Georgia’s democratic future. When the parliamentary deputy Mikheil Kavelashvili suggested that “joining the E.U. is not an end in itself for Georgia,” the head of state reminded the bill’s proponents that the goals of joining the E.U. and NATO were, in fact, written directly into the country’s Constitution. “The activities of political parties that go against the Constitution, and the path elected by our country and its population, must be declared unconstitutional and banned,” said Zurabishvili.

A parliamentary fist-fight and street protests

On February 29, sixty-three Georgian media organizations, including the popular publications Netgazeti, Studio Monitor, Tabula, and Civil Georgia, promised in a joint statement to refuse to register as “agents of foreign influence”:

We categorically oppose the parliamentary majority’s initiative to pass a Russian-style law on ‘agents of foreign influence.’ We are not going to work under that label, and we refuse to register as ‘agents of foreign influence.’ This is an insult to our professional dignity.

Georgian NGOs also attacked the bill as “undemocratic, anti-constitutional, limiting to human rights, and discriminatory with regard to public organizations and the media,” in the words of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, warning that the very possibility of proposing the bill hurts Georgia’s European prospects, since the draft law jeopardizes two different points of the European Commission’s recommendations for Georgia, en route to E.U. membership. Two of the European Commission’s recommendations for Georgia in particular would be compromised by the “foreign agent” legislation: namely, the expectation that Georgia should make more of an effort to foster a pluralistic free media environment, and that it should also involve civil society at all decision-making levels in the country.

On March 2, the Georgian parliament’s committees for External Relations and Security began deliberating on the draft legislation. While this happened, protesters gathered outside the parliament on Rustaveli Prospect. Inside the parliament building itself, opponents of the bill whistled scornfully at the sight of its initiators.

The noise coming from the outside disrupted the committee hearing on the bill, which had to start over. In his opening remarks, International Relations Committee chairman Nikoloz Samkharadze called those who interfered with the hearing “savages.” Opponents of the bill, in turn, said they wouldn’t permit a parliamentary discussion of a “Russian” law. A fist-fight then broke out in the parliament. When the security forcibly removed members of the Strategy Aghmashenebeli party and of the Saakashvili-founded National Movement from the chamber, Strategy Aghmashenebeli founder Giorgi Vashadze called on all the bill’s opponents to join the protests outside the parliament that evening.

The protest started at 6 p.m. Activists and members of the political opposition blocked both entrances to the parliament building, chanting: “No to the Russian law!” and “Slaves!” The police arrested several protesters, and other demonstrators soon tried to stop a police car carrying detainees. Fighting broke out between protesters and the police. By the end of the day, 36 people had been arrested, including several journalists (though interfering with the work of the media is itself a crime in Georgia).

From foreign agents to national ‘dignity’

In the wake of the protests, Georgian Dream desisted on trying to push the bill through the approval process. Yet, days afterwards, as protests subsided, the party’s Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze once again accused the bill’s opponents of slavishly kowtowing to the West, and of having revealed themselves as foreign agents, even without having to register. In his remarks, Kobakhidze proclaimed the unpopular draft law a real success in effecting transparency by exposing foreign influence, even without taking effect as law. “Society is now better able to distinguish agents of foreign influence from agents of people’s influence,” he said. Georgian Dream, he said, believes that “membership in the European Union is not possible at the expense of dignity and independence, of kowtowing to others; it is only possible if we preserve our dignity and independence.”

How Georgian Dream now plans to ascertain the Georgians’ “dignity and independence” is yet to be seen, but the party’s struggle against the opposition, and particularly against Georgia’s National Movement, is clearly far from over.

During India’s tour of the West Indies in 2016, KL Rahul posted a picture of himself holding a beer bottle alongside Umesh Yadav and Stuart Binny in a selfie. America’s pogroms: An accelerating reality

Pogrom: A Russian word meaning to demolish violently and referring to organized massacres of a particular ethnic group. The mob attacks may be approved or condoned by whomever is in authority.

Such was the case after German troops invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Gangs of Polish thugs rounded up, tortured and murdered Jews with the invading Nazis' tacit or explicit approval.

Jan Gross, in his recently re-released book ‘Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland,’ documents how “half of the population of that small east European town, murdered the other half; some 1,600 men, women and children.”

Gross aims for future historians to understand that Nazi evil was not forced on the Polish people, as many believe. Rather, he asserts, “it was welcomed by them.”

His research raises two more universal questions: What motivates one’s neighbors to become mass murderers? And, what can we learn from this about a nation’s character?

These are questions Americans face today.

Taking a sober look back at America’s pogroms, they come more clearly into focus. Like time-lapse photography, centuries of images play through the entire sequence swiftly.

What images?

One is the latest mass shooting in a predominantly black community in Buffalo, NY.

Among the 13 people killed or injured at Tops Friendly Market, 11 were black. Buffalo's police chief Joseph Gramaglia described the assault as a "racist hate crime."

Although we can easily travel back centuries to get a bead on America's pogroms, I suggest we fast-forward from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

We begin with thousands of Black Americans lynched in the Antebellum South by white terrorist mobs, who collected disturbing artifacts such as postcards, which they sent through the US Postal Service to silently complicit friends and family.

On October 24, 1871, roughly 500 White and Latino residents attacked and murdered their innocent Chinese neighbors after a policeman and a rancher had been killed as a result of a conflict between rival Chinese gangs.

American pogroms must include the massacre of May 31 and June 1, 1921, when mobs of white residents were handed weapons by city officials to slaughter Black residents and demolish their homes and businesses in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The Tulsa massacre was triggered by the accusation that a Black teenaged boy sexually assaulted a White woman in the elevator of a Tulsa office building. The 1921 Tulsa pogrom foreshadowed the lynching of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black teen who was abducted and tortured in Mississippi 34 years later, after being accused of whistling at a White woman.

Till's grieving mother demanded an open casket because, in her words, “I wanted the world to see what they did to my boy."

Fast-forward to September 15, 1963 during Sunday morning services at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. An explosion, set off by the Ku Klux Klan, killed four young Black girls: Addie Mae Collins (14), Cynthia Wesley (14), Carole Robertson (14) and Carol Denise McNair (11).

“Short of a mass holocaust,” The Washington Post reported at the time, “the bombing of the Negro church must be considered a maximum tragic failure in race relations.”

Although any time-lapse portrayal of America's pogroms don’t begin in the Antebellum South, if we pick it up from there, there is a straight line leading directly to 1963 Birmingham and 2022 Buffalo.

In the intervening years we became second-hand witnesses to horrifying images at the 2012 shooting at the Sikh Temple in in Oak Creek, Wisconsin (7 dead), the 2015 shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina (9 dead) and the 2018 shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA (11 dead).

The list goes on, with too many more to add here.

What many of the shooters appear to have in common, whether or not they are living with underlying mental illness, is that they had easy access to firearms and were radicalized on racist and antisemitic conspiracy-oriented online message boards such as 4chan.

In some cases the perpetrators, including the Buffalo shooter, left behind screeds that include familiar ramblings about Jews surreptitiously controlling world finance and the genetic incompatibility of races.

Sadly, this disinformation has been reinforced by prominent far right extremists, including elected officials and media personalities who have given a nod to nonsense like the Great Replacement theory, which says that certain elites, Jews in particular, are creating a path for immigrants to replace White people.

Civil rights icon John Lewis said, “No child is born in hate. All children are born in hope love and innocence. It is a troubled world that teaches these vicious values.”

Yet, troubled America’s pogroms continue unabated, despite hard fought intervening milestones such as passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act one year later.

Nevertheless, it feels as if America's history of pogroms is accelerating. Almost half of our nation’s adult population – our neighbors, who are affiliated with the Republican party, either openly support the Great Replacement Theory and the 2020 big lie about election fraud, or maintain their silent complicity with such nonsense.

After the 1963 Birmingham church bombing that took the lives of four young girls, Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “God still has a way of wringing good out of evil. The innocent blood of these little girls may well serve as a redemptive force that will bring new light to this dark city.”

That was almost 60 years ago.

For a redemptive force "to bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice," as MLK famously foretold, and to understand the true nature of America’s character, it requires all hands-on-deck – and, especially to get out the vote.

The Forgotten Shounen: Katekyo Hitman Reborn

This is not a “Why you should watch/read khr” or anything like that. This is just me going into the deep dive and throwing my findings at you. I’m making this because khr used to be my favourite series when I was 15 (I had plushees, posters, tradingcards, the art book etc) and now as an adult I constantly find myself baffled at how unknow it seems to be.

1. Okay first what is khr?

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! or just Reborn! is a series by Akira Amano which was published in Weekly Shounen Jump from 2004 to 2012 (with 42 volumes) and got an anime adaption which run from 2006 to 2010 on Tv Tokyo (with 202 episodes and one OVA).

2. What’s it about?

Khr is a parody of the italian mafia and plays in a world where the mafia is heavily influencial. The protagonist is the japanese middle schooler Sawada Tsunayoshi who is known as “No good Tsuna” because of his failing grades, general weak and cowardly personality and weak physics.

He becomes aware of the mafia world when a 2 year old baby called Reborn arrives at his house claiming to be the greatest hitman and declaring himself his home tutor. Reborn was send by the 9th head of the Vongola famiglia who is ready to retire and looking for a new heir. Which of course, is supposed to be Tsuna and now it's Reborns job to shape him into a worthy sucessor.

Tsuna rejects the violence of the mafia world and refuses the position as the 10th. Thanks to Reborn and his general craziness Tsuna meets different people and starts to make real friendships. Reborn wants 6 of those friends to be Tsuna's future guardians, basically a group of people which will be closest to him in the vongola famiglia. Tsuna might have no interest in those positions but the friendships he builds with them become really precious to him.

Reborns arrivial also brings in the enemies of the Vongola family which leads to Tsuna being forced to engage in battles. Generally Tsuna openly avoids fights and prefers to run away but will put himself in danger for his friends' sake or because of something Reborn did.

Through out the series Tsuna matures and gains strenght but he never becomes a power fantasy. He's just a guy with many flaws who grows through the human connections he makes.

Personally I think the relationship between Reborn and Tsuna is one of the best student teacher reltaionships in all of manga only topped by Mob and Reigen from Mob Psycho 100. Especially the last arc really underlines their unique relationship to me.

Furthermore, khr offers a new and unique battle system: The flames. I'm not gonna go into to too much detail but the general idea is that one fights with their dying will flame which basically turns off your the savety switch so you can fight with everything you have. The flames are seperated into different categories such as: sky, storm, mist, rain, sun, lightning and cloud and have different attributes asigned to each one. Tsuna's use of the sky flame and his transformation when using it is still one of my favourite shounen transformations to this day.

3. What happened?

The series did really well and then not so well over the course of its serialisation. After the manga got an anime adaption it increased in populairty and video games, light novels, and other products such as CDs were created based on the series. Reborn is one of the best selling series of Weekly Shōnen Jump and has sold around 30 Million volumes overall. It was and still is very popular in Japan but rather unknown in the west.

According to the article "The Rise and Fall of Weekly Shonen Jump: A Look at the Circulation of Weekly Jump" khr was the 10th bestselling series in Weekly Shōnen Jump, with a total of 7 million copies sold in 2007.

This number increasing to 15 milion in 2008. Which placed khr into the 4th best selling series of 2008 in Japan.

Between 2008 and 2010 those sales declined but still kept strong with khr as the 6th top selling manga in 2009, 8th best selling in 2010 and then 24th best selling in 2012.

In November 2014, readers of the Da Vinci magazine voted khr number 17 on a list of Weekly Shōnen Jump's greatest manga series of all time.

After the anime came to an apprupt stop in 2010 for unknown reasons the manga sells took a visible hit. (Apparently the studio wanted to put the anime on halt because they were busy with other projects and give Akira Amano time to develop her story but I couldn't find any source for this claim) Furthermore, the rushed last chapters of the manga in 2012 declined the popularity of the series even more. There's no offical statement as to why the manga was ended in such a way but it's reasonable to assume that Jump either cut it considering the decreasing sales or Akira Amano choose to end it for personal reasons.

Nontheless, Tsuna not being included in Jump Force (a fighting game where you can play as different characters from Jump) in 2019 even tho he made it in earlier Jump Stars games also underlines the decreased interest in the series.

Rumors on a reboot or anime adaption of the last two arcs surface from time to time but are genereally unlikely. Artland the studio which made khr has gone bankrupt around 2015-2016. It might be taken on by another studio but rather uncommen especially with such an old series.

4. Art style

The khr anime ended over 10 years ago and the old art style might not be appealing to newer audiences.

Especailly because the anime adaption follows Akira Amanos old art style which heavily developed within the years. Here a picture comparing characters in the new art style:

A modern anime adaption in the new art style would be aesthetically pleasing. It would probably look similiar to Psycho Pass since Akira Amano did the concept art for this series.

(My personal art student hot take is that both art styles are unique and fun. Up to this day Akira Amano still has my favourite art style and even if the amount folds in the characters clothing is a little extreme I love it dearly.)

5. Criticism

The show is not without flaws and even if I greatly enjoy it it wouldn't be right not to adress them.

Daily Life Arc:

A lot of people view the first 20 to 25 episodes as fillers and quickly lose intererst in the series. This is due to the fact that Akira Amano inteded the series to be a gag manga and focuses the first chapters on world building, character introduction and comical narratives. It's rumored that the decision to develop the story into a battle shounen was made because the sales weren't doing well enough at first. So the first chapters/episodes may seem titidious but are necessary for the story and the development of the characters. The tonal shift from a more gintama like gag manga to a darker battle focused story can also be offputting to some viewers.

Either way a lot of people blame this arc when discussing why khr never got an english dub or didn't end up on Toonami. I've also read that the manga never finished serializing in the north america. However, it finished in other western languages like german and spanish.

Censoring:

The anime censors A LOT. From Gokudera's smoking habit, Yamamoto's whole character arc which deals with heavy themes such as depression and suicidal thoughts. The general bloodiness of the manga was censored and sometimes whole chapters and characters were left out even if those were important to the devolopment of others.

Filler episodes:

Out of the 202 episodes the anime has around 29 filler episodes which makes roughly 14 %.

Sexism:

Even if Reborn was written by a woman most female characters are rather flat and their storylines often tied to a male character in one way or another.

Genereal things:

Khr, like many other long running series, is sometimes criticised for a lack of world building or unpopular narrative choices.

6. Hope?

Khr isn't exactly dead. As stated before the series is still very popular in Japan and still gets new merch pretty regulary. There are also petitions floating around for a reboot or a new anime season but those never get a lot of traction. Furthermore #Reborn2期アニメ化 (#Reborn2ndAnimation) used to get some traction on twitter not too long ago. Last year the Anime News Network did a poll on which anime the readers would like to see a rebooot of and khr placed second.

Either way here's a collection of recent khr things I could find.

- In 2018 a new bluray set was released in north america

- The khr stage play reached yet another new season

- A mobile game was released last year

- Currently ongoing anime cafe event called "Concerto di Vongola"

- Last month there was an event with the former VAs and stage play actors where they discussed their favourite khr episodes.

- There has been an increase in blind reacts to the openings on youtube which might bring in a new fan base. The biggest one I could find had around 90k views and was made in 2019. On this note check out the soundtrack. The first openeing Drawing Days by SPLAY still makes me go insane (but I'm biased of course)

There also renewed hope for a new season/reboot because Shaman King, Inuyasha and Bleach got anounced for new seasons after a long hiatus. It's important to keep in mind that the circumstances for those series are differnt tho. For example bleachs new anime is often tied to the immense success of the gatcha game.

7. Conclusion

Khr is a series which used to be a flagship for Weekly Shounen Jump and is deeply beloved by it's fans, especially in Japan. It influenced other shounen series like bnha. It would be nice to see it gaining a bigger fanbase in the west :)

The Lost Legions. What is Known?

As promised.

Before I begin, I beg your indulgence: this is going to come out as a fragmentary series of notes, because that’s precisely what it is. Forgive my poor formatting, please!

I’m afraid this isn’t a terribly long collection if information. However, as a very small number of you are aware, it was my hope at one point to write a novel (or novels) about the Lost Legions, and so I’ve collected what information is available for... lots of reasons.

First, the most common question is this: “Why don’t we have any answer?”

The standard answer has been, at least as long as the Legions have been defined as Legions (so, late Rogue Trader, onward) that the answers were deliberately left vague in order to allow players of the game/fans of the material to create their own Legions. However, and this is key, this seems to have changed. Now, it appears to be a matter of “not giving the answers because nobody will be satisfied by them.” My proposition to GW would be to do a collection of short stories, visions of the Lost Legions by various writers. What would the harm be? Ahh well...

There’s also a fair question that has come up in the Horus Heresy community, at least: “Why don’t we have rules for Legions that aren’t defined by specific Legion traits?” Well, we did, originally - any Legion without Legion rules was said to have the “Fleet” and “Stubborn” rules - which was basic, but useful, because in the earlier days of the Horus Heresy Game (circa 2012-14 or so) these were not common traits. These rules were never removed, and so are still, in theory, legal for play. Perhaps not in tournaments. But... honestly, screw tournaments.

Are there actually answers?

Priestly and others have hinted in the past that there is actually an answer, at least roughly defined. However, others (Johnson, for instance) have denied this. It’s probably fair to point out that the group of writers who created the setting and those who subsequently added to the setting have differed sharply in views of canon and “lore” over the years. Someone I know who worked with them, we’ll call him “A,” once told me that this was the reason for the lack of a story bible. I can’t confirm that’s the case, and have no wish to cast dispersions on anyone. (Except for the problematic, racist/terf/anti-lgbtq authors GW has sensibly sacked over the years.)

This information assumes that there is -some- truth among the various bits and fragments we’ve seen. You can just as easily see how it would be fair to interpret these on your own.

"The First Founding”

- In the first half of first edition or so, we had a few loosely defined terms for Astartes, but no clear idea about what defined a Legion or Chapter, and some terms were used interchangeably. However, by the latter half of 1st and beginning of 2nd, Chapters were beginning to defined by “Foundings.” All of the Legions were “First Founding” Chapters.

- Under that system, two Chapters were identified as “First Founding” Chapters, and these have not subsequently appeared in lists - the Valedictors (Andy Chambers’ personal chapter) and the Rainbow Warriors.

- The Rainbow Warriors were subsequently given errata, circa 3rd edition, which said this had been a mistake. They were actually a Second Founding Chapter. Which is nifty and all, but doesn’t answer the question of the Valedictors, who are referenced in Space Marine (the precursor to Epic, which was precursor to Epic: 40k) and a handful of White Dwarf Articles. As far as I know, Andy has always maintained that the Valedictors were a Legion, or at least they are the descendants of one. I can’t speak for him personally.

Hints in Boardgames:

- The “Space Crusade” Boardgame featured a room that included a table inscribed with slabs that have markings of all twenty Legions. One of these is scratched out and illegible. Another has been removed, and if you have keen eyes, can be found nearby on a piece of detritus. The insignia is unambiguously that of the Rainbow Warriors.

- There are similar versions in some printings of Space Hulk, but I haven’t seen them all. Just trust that they do exist.

Contextual Clues:

- In the official lists of the Legions, the two Legion’s are clearly listed, with names, and then struck through, blackened as if redacted. One of the Legionary names is short, only one word. The other seems to be about as long as would indicate a two or three word name.

- Most of the colors of the rainbow are covered by the eighteen known Legions. One, Orange has not appeared as part of a “formal”, post-Primarch paint scheme, and appears only in the colors of the Thousand Sons prior to the coming of Magnus.

- Grey seems to have been used by all of the Legiones Astartes at one point or another. Only the Word Bearers (edit: and Space Wolves) keep this, and the Word Bearers cover it with inscriptions.

- A number of fans have theorized that orange may well be part of the formal heraldry of one of the lost Legions, and you’ll see them paint with it in some variety. Honestly, it looks very good contrasted with grey. Probably better in reality than it does in illustrated form.

- All of the Legions have a defined role or purpose. None are created merely as elite troops - even the most ‘vanilla’ Legions have specific doctrinal purposes. A few are experiments in additional gene seed alteration: Legios XV, XVIII, and XIX. In the official fluff for the Alpha Legion, the Horus Heresy rulebooks state that the twentieth was, like the Fifteenth, and Eighteenth, and one other legion, created in conditions of utter secrecy even to the other legions. This leads to speculation that on of these “secret legions” could be the Second or the Eleventh.

- A portion of the “Imperial Infantryman’s Uplifting Primer,” published by GW, describes the Rangdan Xenocides as “the bloodiest campaign fought by the Imperial Army during the Great Crusade.” During that campaign, the handbook says, a number of Imperial Army corps were destroyed, and two Legions were lost. Two Legions. Because Titan Legions are identified elsewhere, it’s fairly strongly implied that the Second and the Eleventh fell as a result of the Rangdan Xenocides.

The Luna Wolves:

- Some of our protagonists in early Horus Heresy books speak about their late, lamented, lost brothers. They are quickly instructed in these instances to remember that those are “not to be spoken of.” So, clearly, the Sixteenth knows something of the lost Legions.

Leman Russ:

- Most of the official campaigns fought by the Sixth Legion are redacted. Only a few are given specific dates as WELL as being redacted. It’s heavily implied that at least one of these involved the culling of Legions.

- Russ is known as “The Emperor’s Executioner,” and he’s clearly been involved in the culling of Space Marines before. In addition, we know from the Horus Heresy novels that the Heresy will -not- be the first time legionaries have clashed. It’s therefore suggested that Russ was involved in the disappearance of one, if not both, Legions.

- Russ, however, seems to be new to destroying an -entire- Legion, as he is disquieted both by Prospero and the revelation that he was -tricked- into attacking the Fifteenth by Horus Lupercal. This implies that he did -not- destroy either of the lost legions.

- In the official timeline of the rediscovery of the Primarchs, Leman Russ is present with the Emperor during the discovery of one of the two lost Primarchs. The details of the last of the two to be discovered are considerably vague, but take place before Corvus Corax and Alpharius.

The Nemean Reaver:

- Appears as a Black Shield after Rangdan. He carries a Calabanite Blade, and it is assumed that he is a Dark Angel. However, he steadfastly denies this and refuses to identify his Legion of origin. The Dark Angels also disavow him, and imply that his Calabanite Blade was stolen. Both lost legions were present at Rangdan, as were the Dark Angels, fighting alongside them. Tens of thousands of Dark Angels died. It’s not hard to find a legionary weapon among them during the chaos of a desperate situation.

- The Nemean Lion was a beast -slain- by Hercules, who then wore the pelt because doing so protected him from enemy projectiles.

- An image of the Nemean Reaver’s personal Storm Eagle depicts a faded Crusade era Astartes insignia (the head of a hawk surmounting lightning bolts). This appears to be mounted above a faded XI.

EDIT: The image actually shows the head of a hound or griffon, and the door is painted in black and white. The caption says that “hints as to (his) origins” may be implied from the markings on the storm eagle.

Rogal Dorn and Malcador.

- Dorn perhaps gives us the most information we are likely to receive, at least directly, as he has multiple conversations with Malcador, spread over a series of short stories, about the subject.

- Dorn suggests that, if Legionaries are needed by the Emperor, there are others who could be called upon. “Never,” Malcador says, “Never think of it!”

- Dorn asks Malcador why there aren’t any female Astartes. Malcador replies that it is absolutely possible, but that the process is far more expensive and labor intensive owing to the advanced physiology of the human female. This strongly suggests that at least -some- Space Marines were female at one point.

- During another conversation, Malcador laments to Dorn that, “if I had it my way, and your father had listened, you all would have been sisters.” This may mean nothing, but this has been interpreted by some that the sentence should be read, “you would ALL have been sisters.” Was one of the primarchs female?

- After constantly badgering Malcador about the subject, Malcador finally tells Dorn that he and the others have only vague recollections of the Second and Eleventh Legions because as many as possible were subjected to a form of mind wipe, whilst others were sworn to secrecy (presumably those for whom the technology could not, or would not, work.) Dorn discovers that -he- gave the order for this situation, and that the Emperor forbids speaking about the subject partly on -his- advice.

- Dorn voluntarily undergoes a reversal of the above. When he does so, he is immediately aware of the circumstances of the loss of the Second and Eleventh Legion. We don’t know what these are, but we are told that he believes that these make the then ongoing Horus Heresy -pale- by comparison and would cause endless problems if revealed. That’s right, the loss of the two was so significant that it made the Heresy seem manageable.

- Perhaps significant is this: the Rangdan Xenocides are said to have involved the mysterious “Enslavers” and “Xeno Cerbovores” - Brain eaters. Enslavers have been in the 40K setting from the beginning, and have been compared to “Mind Flayers” - creatures from the D&D fantasy setting (amongst others.) These seize control of sapient minds and can completely subvert their will, while feeding on their mental energies. They are, in essence, a far more dangerous version of the Xenos “Nephilim” finally destroyed by the White Scars during the Great Crusade.

Now, the Enslavers are left deliberately vague, and listed as a “primary threat” to the Imperium despite never having appeared in miniature. And as a part of that vague but terrifying threat, even -speaking- of them is said to be dangerous, since that apparently does something to empower them. Perhaps it draws them? Perhaps someone who has successfully been possessed by an Enslaver and subsequently returned to sanity will regress if he is made aware of his prior posession?

Sanguinius:

- In “Fear to Tread”, Sanguinius confides in Horus that he is afraid to tell the Emperor about the blood thirst gene-seed flaw affecting his Legion. Horus asks him why. And he responds, angrily, “You KNOW why!” And later, he says that he will not see his sons remembered only by an empty plinthe.

- At the council of Nicaea, Sanguinius and others “greatly regret” the absence of a lost brother. One of the lost Primarchs likely had insight that might have been useful. Nicaea takes place somewhere between twenty five and fifty years after Rangdan.

The Ultramarines:

- After the Rangdan Xenocides, the Ultramarines, who did not take part, become the largest amongst the Legiones Astartes - a role formerly held by the Dark Angels. They received a large number of new recruits around the time that the Rangdan ended. Did they absorb survivors of the Lost Legions?

Forge World and the Minotaurs:

- Forge World’s “Minotaurs” Chapter, which they’ve seriously neglected in recent years, has an unknown origin, and and unknown primarch. They repeatedly use the Roman numeral “II” in their iconography, and it is said to have some sort of significance for them, but nobody seems to remember why.

Other Interesting Tidbits:

- In the Emperor’s tarot, the lost Legions are typically associated with “The Wanderer” or “Nomad” and the “Wheel.” It is implied that one of these is a psychically gifted being.

- Endryd Haar of the World Eaters, “The Riven Hound,” is described as being utterly unlike other Astartes. He is larger, faster, more resilient. Perhaps he’s an advanced Thunder Warrior. Or perhaps...

- A bad piece of fiction written earlier in the history of Black Library identifies the “Iron Hearts” as a Chapter with a “Primarch.” It describes the destruction of that Chapter because of the corruption of the Legion by forbidden A.I. via a virtual reality training program. However, it’s clear that the author didn’t understand what a Primarch was, and the Primarch, identified as “Rubinek” is subsequently identified as a Chapter Master, rather than a Primarch.

- In a story by Laurie Goulding, Horus is arguing with Malcador in a flashback sequence. Malcador essentially... well.. “force chokes” Horus. He has been speaking about the lost legions. He manages to gurgle out “Mala...” before he has to stop speaking. The scene has since been recreated in a fan comic suggesting that Horus’ secret motive for hating the Emperor is in fact the loss of one of the lost Primarchs, to whom he was very close. It’s an interesting idea, but most is fan created. That “Mala” person... though... I wonder.... Sounds like a happening dude.

- When the Emperor is questioned about the matter by Corvus Corax, the Emperor grows genuinely sad and says that “that is a matter best spoken of at another time.”

Conflicts in fluff:

- Some BL sources tell us that -all twenty Primarchs- were present on Ulanor. In another story, Sanguinius suggests to Horus that the gathering of the primarchs together at Ulanor is “the first time that this has has happened since...” and he quickly silences himself.

- Some BL sources tell us that all of the twenty primarchs knew each other. In the same series, however, we are told that Corvus Corax was discovered -after- two of his brothers were lost. Once again, BL tells us that Alpharius was -last- of the primarchs to be discovered, but Corvus Corax learns that he has seventeen brothers eager to meet him. So... what’s happening here?

- New Info!

Alpharius now claims that he was in fact the first Primarch discovered, but that this was deliberately hidden from the others.

As you can see, these are all fragments; most are vague, and more than a little frustrating. However, perhaps you’ll be able to make your own decisions based upon what is known. Ask for writers

I was tagged a while ago by @theisolatedlily @zanniscaramouche and @tomlinvelvetfics. Sorry it took a while!

1. describe how you first started writing and when you first posted: I’ve been writing since I was literally able to, but I first started writing fanfic on ff.net back in the good old days. I wrote HP fanfic, among other things. In 2012 I made the switch to AO3 and started writing Ziam fanfic.

2. which of your characters do you typically resonate most closely with? do you base any characters off of yourself?: I’m very similar to Louis in a lot of ways, so his POV definitely comes easiest to me. When I’m writing Ziam I find that I prefer to write from Liam’s POV, though I don’t feel I’m necessarily similar to Liam.

3. where do you often find inspiration?: Movies, shows, random posts on Tumblr.

4. has quarantine helped or hindered your writing process?: Not necessarily either of them, I feel. I’ve had a little bit more time but since I don’t work much I’ve always had the time to write. It’s more the other way around, writing has helped my quarantine.

5. do you listen to music/noise while you write or do you prefer silence? Silence. I can’t write with music on.

6. what is your biggest writing pet peeve in your writing or in general?: In general, bad grammar or ooc characters pulls me out of a story really quickly. I don’t tend to read much fic, since I don’t want other people’s writing style to seep into my writing, so I suppose that would be my own biggest pet peeve, is when I find that I’m not writing in my own voice.

7. describe your ideal writing setup: Basically just at my desk, in a good chair, because right now my chair sucks and my back issues are making me lightheaded a lot, which is why I haven’t written as much as I want to.

8. favorite time of day to write?: Early in the morning/day. When I don’t work I like to write from around 9-11 am since I have the most energy in the morning.

9. favorite genre to write + one you’d like to try writing in the future?: Fantasy, for sure. Soulmates/fates/dystopia fics are still great.

10. do you struggle with writer’s block? how do you typically overcome it? I do when I haven’t been writing for a while, I need to be in tune with my story to really keep it flowing. I tend to force myself through it by just committing to certain times to write, and trying to keep that regularly so I don’t stray too far from the fic.

11. what is the easiest part of your writing process and the most difficult? I tend to write as I go, meaning that I sit down and the words just come pouring out. When I’ve outlined and I feel like I need to stick to that, it sort of feels stifling and I struggle, so I’m best at just free writing and letting the story go where it needs to go.

12. how do you come up with original characters? (if applicable): I don’t usually write original characters into my stories, but if I did it’d be from people I know or based roughly on characters in shows/movies.

13. what is your favorite and least favorite word? My absolute least favorite word is cum. Especially as a verb. That’s a hard no from me. I don’t really have a favorite word.

14. what is one thing about your writing that you’re really proud of and one thing you hope to continue working at?: I feel I’m a pretty solid story teller, and that I manage to put emotion into my work that translates to the people who read it. I want to keep working at my craft, I don’t feel there is something I’m particularly bad at, but I know I can improve a lot.

15. what work of yours has your favorite ‘verse/world building? how did you come up with it?: Definitely there’s no fair in farewell. It’s been in my head since 2014 and I finally sat down to write it in 2017/2018. It’s got so much world building and such a unique storyline, I’m still so proud of it. I don’t remember how I came up with it, it sort of feels like the story’s always been there, just waiting for me to sit down and tell it.

16. what font and size do you write in? single spaced or double?: calibi, 11, single space.

17. what is a typo(s) you find yourself making consistently?: I don’t really know? I don’t think I make a lot of consistent typos. I just write fast and mess up words on the regular lol. but this is a question better suited for my beta, @lightwoodsmagic!

18. (if applicable) do you separate fic writing from fandom?: Yeah I really only write AUs.

19. what emotion is your favorite to write? which is the most difficult?: Angst is my absolute favorite. I love writing emotional stories, with a lot of introspective characters. I feel that lust is the hardest to write since I’m aroace and I just cannot compute that people want to do the deed lmao.

20. what is one thing you hope readers always take away from your works?: that there is always hope and fate always works her way.

21. what is the best and worst writing advice you’ve ever received?: The best is to not compare yourself to anyone else, since it’s a race you’ll inevitably lose. The worst, oof, I don’t really know.

22. which one of your works would you most want to see turned into a film/television show?: There’s no fair in farewell, absolutely. I feel like it has movie potential.

23. do you write scenes chronologically or out of order?: Chronologically. Usually my stories go where they want to go, so if I wrote out of order none of the scenes would match up.

24. how do you handle criticism?: My first instinct is to be frustrated. My second, more thoughtful attitude, is that I will listen if it’s something I feel is valid. I am very vulnerable in my works and so criticism feels personal sometimes, but I’m also secure enough in my work to know when something is valid and when I should stick to my own ideas.

25. what is the advice you would give to someone who is looking to start writing?: Do it. Write what appeals to you. Write from your heart and your soul.

26. what kind of feedback on your work always makes your day?: Any comment is great, but I love when people point out the parts that made them emotional or that resonated with them. I love when people pick out quotes that they say helped made them feel better.

27. which fic ‘verse of your own would you most like to exist in? which fic’s characters would you most like to befriend?: Oof. I don’t think I’d want to exist in most of my AUs. I’m pretty content with my life as is, but I’d love to befriend Zouis in my Zouis wallsficfest fic just because I am that mom friend and they both needed hugs.

28. what do you always enjoy getting asks about/wish people would ask about more?: I’d love to get asks about my fics in general! These asks are pretty damn fun!

29. what has writing added to your life? how has it changed you?: It’s added so much love. Love for my writing, love for the stories and universes I put out. And love in the form of dear writer friends who have enriched my life and who have become some of my most favorite people.

30. why do you write?: because I’m a writer and I have to.

Barbie An In Depth Analysis and Essay

With over 200 careers within 60 years, she was first introduced to the public as Barbara Millicent Roberts, better known as Barbie. She is an inspiring and well-known female fashion icon. However, with careers like presidential candidate, paleontologist and doctor, it's reasonable to be suspicious about Miss Roberts’, who will be henceforth referred to as “Barbie careers”. In this essay I will be going into the nitty-gritty details about Barbie and her many careers.

Before we can truly talk about the details of Barbie, we must first know about Barbie’s childhood of, at least, the limited amount of her childhood we have been given access to via her books. Barbie grew up in Willows, Wisconsin with her parents George and Margret Roberts this is told to us by a series of novels that were published by Random House in the 1960s. It is unknown where she got her education up until high school, which we are told by the Random House novels, she goes to Willows Highschool. However, in the Generation Girl books, which were published in 1999 by Golden Books publishing company, that she attended Manhattan International Highschool in New York.

Her on and off again boyfriend, Kenneth Carson, who will be referred to as Ken, first appeared in 1961. He stayed by her side until February 2004, where they announced that they would be breaking up. During the 2 year break that Barbie and Ken had, Barbie began to date Blaine Gordan/O’Hare, who dated Barbie until Ken reappeared and they decided to rekindle their old flame. In February 2006 Barbie and Ken told the public that they were hoping to rekindle their relationship after Ken gets a makeover. So, after a two-year break Ken was back to being by Barbie’s side.

Skipper Roberts, the oldest of Barbie’s younger sisters, first appeared in 1964 up until 2003 when she disappears for 6 years, appearing again in public in 2009 where she has stayed up until now. Tutti and Todd were introduced in 1965, before Tutti disappeared in 1971 with Todd following in 1996. There has been no sightings of either of the children since, although there is a theory that Anastasia ‘Stacie’ Roberts is Tutti. Anastasia ‘Stacie’ Roberts was first introduced in 1990 where she was and often still is, mistaken as Tutti, who had disappeared roughly 19 years before. We were told she was Kelly at first but she was later renamed and introduced as Stacie who was presented as the twin of Todd up until he disappeared.

Stacie has not left the public eye since she was introduced. Kelly/Shelly Roberts, which name is the real name is unknown since the dolls are usually referred to as Kelly, they will be referred to as such. Kelly first stepped into the public eye in 1995 where she stayed up until 2010 when she disappeared; Chelsea Roberts was introduced only a few months later in 2010. The youngest sister of Barbie is Kristine ‘Krissy’ Roberts, who appeared in 1998 up until 2001. Krissy was an infant and the youngest sibling of Barbie that we’ve seen yet.

Over the many years we’ve seen siblings and friends age and disappear and reappear looking completely different. Barbie was in view of the public the whole time and changed overtime almost completely. Changing her hooded eyes to more a more rounded shape and her pursed lips into smaller pink lips. Barbie is over 70. When she was introduced, she was a teenager and she’s been seen almost all the time for those 60 years after being introduced. Barbie still looks like a young adult. Why doesn’t she age? It’s quite simple really, she’s immortal. Of course, one could argue that she simply has had a lot of plastic surgery but if we're being completely honest, there is no way that Barbie would look like she does now with plastic surgery. Her entire face shape changed. Yes, she is a model and lives in a mansion, but she is also a woman who prides herself on being as ‘her’ as possible. She would never undermine her support of young girls by crumbling to the beauty standards forced onto her.

Barbie has taken careers in positions ranging from stereotypical female roles such as teacher, army medic, and ballerina but has also taken on stereotypical male roles such as President, United States Marine Corps Sergeant, and Doctor. Barbie has done it all. One would wonder how she possible had all of these jobs. Let's assume that she worked on all these degrees on the side but to be the President. Well I’d certainly hope that all her attention was on serving the United States and not on getting another degree. In 60 years with a presidential term removed, leaves us with 56 years. 56 years multiplied by 52 for the number of weeks in a year divided by the 199 careers still left over. Doing the math leaves us with 14.6 or roughly 14 weeks which is just over a quarter of a year. Is this truly the amount of time Barbie spends on each of her jobs?

It couldn’t possibly be, as Barbie has run as a Presidential Candidate in 1992 winning and becoming the President in 2000, she ran again in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. Whether she will be running again in 2020 is unknown. With campaigning almost every election possible you’d have to consider the amount of time used campaigning in all her years. She’s campaigned 6 times, getting elected and winning once that equates to over 8 years of campaigning not including her presidency. We get this number from the average politician starts campaigning, 531 days before the election by dividing that by 7, we get the average weeks politicians start campaigning before elections, which is 75.8 or roughly 75 weeks before the election. By further dividing that by 52, the number of weeks in a year, we can see the average politician starts campaigning 1.45 years before the election. With Barbie campaigning 6 times that works out to 8.75 years of campaigning with the added 4 years of presidency makes 12.75 years of campaigning and being president. Well, Barbie’s schedule is packed, but still there are 198 jobs that require her and with a subtracted 12.75 years, does she really have time for it all? Surprisingly, yes. Using the same formula as before, which consisted of subtracting the 12.75 years, multiplying by 52 for all the weeks in the year and then dividing by 198 careers, we’ve yet to cover. That leaves us with 12.4 or roughly 12 weeks for each career besides her work as a presidential candidate or the president. Which while it doesn’t seem like much it is roughly 3 months per career.

Some of her other careers are also extremely wary, especially with the 12 weeks span each career would have to follow. For example, United States Marine Corps Sergeant, in order to get promoted to sergeant on has to have at least 24 months in the service, and 12 months as an E4 or in military terms a corporal, that’s 3 years but the average is 4.8 years. This leads us to our next problem; one must rise through the ranks of the military before you can become a corporal let alone a sergeant. So, let's quickly go through the ranks and the time needed to rank up at the minimum. The average time to be promoted to private first class is 6 months. To be promoted to the next rank, lance corporal, the average is 14 months. After Lance corporal is corporal which averages at 26 months, which clearly does not stick to the 12 weeks career span and she hasn’t even gotten to Sergeant which averages as stated before 4.8 years however these are all averages. So, let’s say Barbie gets promoted immediately after reaching the requirements, specifically the time requirements, which rarely ever happens if ever. The time requirement to be promoted to private first class is 6 months in service (TIS) and 6 months in grade (TIG), for lance corporal, it’s 9 months TIS and 8 months TIG, the ranks are competitive because there are less vacancies but we’ll assume that miraculously, Barbie got moved up as soon as she finished her requirements because why not. To become corporal you need 12 months TIS and 8 months TIG. To become Sergeant, you need 24 months TIS and 12 months TIG. All of that adds up to 85 months that's roughly 7 years but honestly that’s not the real answer you can get the TIG at the same time as TIS so it would only take 3 years give or take. Add 3 years to the 12.75 years from earlier and its 15.75 years and only 3 careers of the 200 have been followed. Doing some quick math with the same formula as earlier, each job must last 11 weeks which still could be accomplished but just barely.

The thing is that Barbie has done some incredible things, but the thing that got me suspicious is her career as an astronaut which happened twice, Barbie went to space once and decided that wasn’t good enough and did it again. It’s not the 11 weeks limit on each career that makes me suspicious of this one, it’s the fact that she did it before it could even be possible. Barbie became an astronaut for the first time in 1965. Yeah, you got that right, Barbie went to the moon 4 years before the first person on the moon Neil Armstrong! How in the hell did Barbie get to the moon before NASA and SSP? During the first Apollo launch, they were doing a regular unfueled practice when a cabin fire broke out and killed all three crew members on board, which happened in 1967. Barbie then proceeds to decide to go back to space in 1986, this is after the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster which disintegrated 73 seconds after it launched killing all 7 people on board. The thing is while Barbie was an astronaut only twice, she did go to space 3 times. One of these times is in 2013 under the career Mars Explorer because I guess astronaut isn’t good enough for her. Barbie was the first on the moon 4 years before Neil Armstrong and on Mars before we could even attempt to send anyone to Mars. Barbie is repeatedly the first to do extraordinary things, things we can’t even think to be able to do with the current technology.

Barbie has repeatedly been able to do things ‘regular’ people couldn’t even imagine. Becoming the president before a woman could or even get nominated by a dominant political party. Barbie truly has done everything, and if she has yet to do something, she will probably do it soon. Barbie is so much more than us. Barbie could be immortal but that wouldn’t explain all of the things happening to her and around her. Barbie is extremely lucky to not only get all the education to be able to do half of her careers, but to campaign and get elected as a president, become a United States Marine Sergeant in only 3 years, and go to space multiple times, once to the moon and to Mars. Barbie is truly inhuman, in fact to even compare her to us humans would be insulting. What I’m trying to say is that Barbie isn’t immortal because she is a god.
