(May 12, 2023) We are raising money for a crowd funded research project investigating the cause of blueberry hermit crabs in Okinawa, Japan using trash found on the beach as “homes” instead of natural shells. These hermit crabs are endemic to the southern islands of Japan, and they act as coastal environmental engineers. They are endangered on several islands, and we want to try and understand why they are resorting to beach trash for shells. Please consider sharing this post and donating to the project. The fundraising will be active for the next 45 days (until June 26).
You can find all project details here: https://experiment.com/projects/blueberry-hermit-crabs-with-beach-trash-homes
We suspect that areas with high rates of tourism lead to beach combers collecting natural shells leaving nothing for the hermit crabs to use. It’s possible that overfishing of turbo snails which would naturally provide shells for the crabs may also be a factor. We will survey many sites across several islands in Okinawa to try and determine a cause of this behavior.
We will be working closely with national geographic photographer Shawn Miller (photo credits above) and several researchers in Japan. Additionally, we will complete extensive beach clean ups in the areas we study. Thank you so much for reading!
When mercury is added to aluminum, it forms an amalgam (a mercury alloy). Aluminum is normally protected by a thick oxide layer, but the formation of the amalgam disrupts it. It allows fresh aluminum to react with air to form white aluminum oxide. As the oxide grows, it forms as these cool white fibers.

This is ferrofluid- a liquid substance that responds to the presence of magnets with these really cool reactions!
Ferrofluid is actually made of tons of tiny tiny particles of iron or another magnetic metal suspended in water. Each of the particles are coated in a surfactant to keep them from all bunching together, and that's why it looks like a cohesive liquid.
This compound is paramagnetic. That means that it won't automatically stick to iron or other magnetic materials, but when a magnetic field is applied, each of the tiny iron particle becomes a magnet and moves and reacts to the field. Depending on how you apply the magnetic field, this can create some pretty cool effects!

Ferrofluid was actually created in the early 1960s by Steve Papell, a NASA engineer that was trying to come up with a type of rocket fuel that can be easily moved around in zero gravity.
Today, ferrofluid is used in products like loudspeakers and hard drives, but they could potentially be used in the biomedical field as a way to help deliver drugs to certain areas of the body. The drugs would be attached to small amounts of ferrofluid, and then selectively released magnetic fields could help guide them to where they need to go.
You can also just... buy a bottle of it to play with like in the gif at the top. They sell it on Amazon (just be cautious and take appropriate precautions handling it if you have an unsealed container).
I'M STARTING A MAD SCIENCE DISCORD SERVER.🧪🥼🥽⚗️🧫🧬💉🔬🩻🫧⚡️🔥💥💣🦴🦷👁🫁🫀🧠📋🩸🔩☠️⚠️☢️☣️
are you a lover of mad science? a mad scientist yourself? a normal scientist slowly loosing it and realising their fate? a fan of mad scientists, fictional or physical? then welcome to my new Discord server, The Unethics Committee! on tumblr there are wizards, gremlins, fairies, cryptids, vampires, ghosts and more, but i've noticed there is actually quite a few mad scientist friends on here to, so i'm doing this in an effort to bring our little community together a bit more.
in this server, we will do all things related to science, mad or not, as well as just hang out and have a great time: talking about science stuff, share media and music, own experiments and discuss unhinged theories and plans, be silly, cause chaos, whatever, you name it.
Server link:
looking forward to hanging out with my fellow lab coat-wearing, chemical loving, hysterically laughing, lab safety violating bastards. :)
Observation: my budgie Dax gets really chirpy and chattery whenever I watch an episode of Magic School Bus.
Hypothesis: She’s responding to the characters’ voices in the show.
Alternate hypothesis: She is responding not to the dialogue, but to the instrumental score.
Other notes:
I usually watch Magic School Bus between 3 PM and 5 PM. Dax usually gets the zoomies around this time.
Today, I watched an episode at around 8:30 PM and Dax was just as chirpy.
Proposed Experiment: play classical music (similar to the score used in Magic School Bus) and observe Dax’s reaction. And pay close attention to when she chirps during the video episodes.
@a-dinosaur-a-day do your birds respond to music or TV in any way?
So, I learned about shifting and have tried it MULTIPLE times, to no avail. I oh-so-desperately want to believe it, though, but I am a very concrete thinker and need PROOF before I can believe something. I am aware there is a CIA document about it, but the reason it was declassified is because there was lack of solid proof. And, as far as i can find, scientists have yet to study this, so I am doing it myself. As I have no firsthand experience, I cannot do the experiment BY myself as of now, though. I Need participants. Specifically, shifters. It’s ok if you haven’t shifted yet—you can still participate if you’re willing to try. The experiment is as follows:
1. Each participant will shift to a reality that is either A. An ongoing series that will have more by the end of this year or an upcoming piece of media that will be released by the end of this year, or B. A reality that is identical to this one aside from the fact that it is farther along in the future.
2. Participants will, if successful, provide me with at least ONE piece of significant knowledge from the reality they shift to—e.g. a large plot twist from a show or a popular news headline from a reality like ours. You may do this through DM.
3. I will record the data I am given from each shifter, and wait to see if it comes true before this year is over. At the end of 2023, supposing I have gathered data by then, I will be concluding the study and releasing the results.
Please, if you’re a shifter (regardless of if you’ve already shifted), help me!!! I want to shift SO bad but I can’t do it without proof, my kind just won’t let me. I need to KNOW. I WANT to know. And, if we manage to prove this, people will take us more seriously!!!! Please, if you want to participate, DM me, and we’ll talk about it! It would seriously mean a lot to me. Thank you so much!!
Personality: This clown is spacy and distant, though not hollow or cold. Curious, but lacks the capacity to absorb and store knowledge for long periods of time.
Known Issues: Each limb was made with a different technique, causing a mismatched and bloated appearance as well as an inability to sit up without assistance.
In the middle of the room is a ladder, leading to a bunch of bananas hanging from a hook on the ceiling.
Each time a monkey tries to climb the ladder, all the monkeys are sprayed with ice water, which makes them miserable.
Soon enough, whenever a monkey attempts to climb the ladder, all of the other monkeys, not wanting to be sprayed on, set upon him and beat him up. Soon, none of the eight monkeys ever attempts to climb the ladder.
One of the original monkeys is then removed, and a new monkey is put in the room.
Seeing the bananas and the ladder, he wonders why none of the other monkeys are doing the obvious. But undaunted, he immediately begins to climb the ladder. All the other monkeys fall upon him and beat him silly and he has no idea why. However, he no longer attempts to climb the ladder; A second original monkey is removed and replaced.
The newcomer again attempts to climb the ladder, but all the other monkeys hammer the crap out of him. This includes the previous new monkey, who, grateful that he’s not on the receiving end this time, participates in the beating because all the other monkeys are doing it.
However, he has no idea why he’s attacking the new monkey.
One by one, all the original monkeys are replaced.
Eight new monkeys are now in the room. None of them have ever been sprayed by ice water. None of them attempt to climb the ladder. All of them will enthusiastically beat up any new monkey who tries, without having any idea why.
That is how traditions, religion and ethnic profiling get established and followed.
Think twice before following a tradition, religion or negative ethnic profiling. It would make more sense if you get your own understanding to it!

A small amount of ethanol (or other fuel – see instructions) is swirled in a 15l water container. Excess ethanol is poured off and the vapour/air mixture is lit. It burns rapidly with a satisfying 'whoosh'. Whoosh Bottle.
