I was in the school band for some reason, and was forced to play both tuba and a bass drum, and carry them around constantly. I woke up and slammed my head into the wall because it was closer than I thought.

March 1959 - Freddie Mercury Story!
India - Farrokh Bulsara formed the school band, 'The Hectics', the first band
👉 'Freddie Mercury was a prodigy': Rock star's Panchgani school bandmates remember 'Bucky'
Sep 05, 2016, Scroll.in, by Anvar Alikhan
Freddie Mercury is considered to have been one of the most flamboyant showmen in rock ’n’ roll history. Were there any early signs of that in his performances with the Hectics?
Victory Rana: Freddie was very shy, but once he started playing his piano, he became a completely different person. But I don’t remember him as being any kind of showman – not at that age, anyway.
Subash Shah: Yes, Freddie was very shy. But he was also “a born show-off”, and his entire personality would transform once he was performing. To give you one example: one evening, as teenagers, we were walking on a beach in Zanzibar. Music was playing and Freddie spontaneously started to do the twist, the popular dance move of the time. It was such a mesmerising performance that the next thing we knew was that a group of conservative local girls, wearing burqas, had formed a circle around Freddie and began to twist with him. That was the power of his showmanship, even back then.
Did he display any signs of future greatness back then? Any indications of the shape of things to come?
Victory Rana: To be quite frank, no. Yes, Freddie had a lot of talent, and he was very passionate about his piano playing. But who could say, based on that, that he’d grow up to be the megastar that he became?
Farang Irani: His parents were good solid middle-class Parsis with middle-class values. His father was an accountant in Zanzibar, and he wanted Freddie to become an accountant or a lawyer

Time for an angry rant about school. So I play percussion in school band, we have about 7 percussionists in our section. There's this boy, Noah. he's such a pick me. He thinks he knows everything because he can play the hi-hat cymbal. He takes my spot in the drum line, usually I'm next to the cymbal and so what?! He only plays it for 1 song and for that one song I'm on the xylophone so he can use that spot DURING THE SONG! idgaf if ur "popular" and also wanna know something funny?
Tumblr media
I know how to play the hi-hat too! That is a picture of my own cymbal in my room!! And also something else? He was playing it wrong!! Usually when playing a hi-hat snare beat you cross your arms, he is right handed and basically using a left handed set!
I have an electric kit, and more percussion stuff at home! I know more than him (until it comes to the xylophone but that's not what we're talking about). I get so angry when he thinks he knows everything because he can play a basic quarter note beat.
Like this (I just drew this right now sry)
Tumblr media
I can play so much more than that, but I can't prove it at school because the kit is different. The drum needs to be tilted forward and the hi hat is different than mine that I'm used to.
Next time he steals my spot I'm giving his sticks to a trombone player 🙂😌

the amount of joy i get from my instrument while playing in front of others is insane. i was just doing pep for a volleyball game, but there was something there. i see why rob rolfe genuinely loves what he does and why shikari relies on live shows for creativity. i want to play the drums, or atleast some instrument for as long as i can. maybe i’ll pick up the trumpet and learn the akftww fanfare, or maybe i’ll relearn guitar, or maybe i’ll learn how to use double mallets on marimba, or—
i love music forever. i fucking love the drums.

I think y’all don’t appreciate percussionists enough. They are like a heartbeat to a song and help fellow musicians keep in time. Say for example someone is playing the drum set and they have to play a very steady and simple beat for 2 minutes or more; doesn’t that sound tiring on the arms? And some drummers do more! Other percussionists that are in band for school have to play multiple instruments and have to adjust to a new instrument for different songs. They don’t just hit stuff they have a certain grip and way they play as well as percussion instruments that don’t even need mallets and there is a whole other world to that. And marching band drummers have to carry their drums which can be pretty heavy and they are so important for marking time. Point is give percussionist more credit please. Every instrument has a role and percussion is just as important to a band if not more than any other instrument. This has been music experiences with Kyle.
