Good Evening folks! March's Creature of the Month is the Sumatran Orangutan The word Orangutan originates from Malaysia and translates in Malayan to 'person of the forest'. These extremely intelligent, sentient beings are critically endangered. The orangutan (along with many other endangered creatures) is struggling to survive in the diminishing rainforest of Sumatra and Borneo. There are many factors that are impacting the orangutan population, many of them are a direct result and effect of the unregulated and uncertified palm oil industry. Habitat loss due to deforestation for oil palm plantations, illegal poaching and pet trade along with low reproduction rates are working against these creatures chance of survival. Along with these issues, corruption, cruelty and human destruction, are further leading the Sumatran orangutan to the cusp of extinction. It is crucial that we act now, not only to save the rainforest and its diversity, but to save this amazingly intelligent, social creature from extinction. Vegan diet is probably good for the environment as much for the animals. So I found this interesting dish at my local supermarket. We went to visit the Bukit Merah Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre and I was blessed to be chosen by Jidin for kisses and hand holding, this gorgeous 3 year old little guy has certainly stole my heart. Although many people were present he came back again and again to shower me with loves. The DNA sequence of an orangutan is 97% similar to that of our own, they are our closest animal relative and have many of the same systems as we do, such as gestation times and menstrual cycles. The only difference in DNA is they lack vocal chords, and instead produce sound with a throat sack. I know if they could speak they would ask for our help and to let their environments be. They are such intelligent creatures and deserve more off us humans, we create such dire problems for these critically endangered species and it is our duty to protect them. I know I will be doing all I can to help. If these pictures melt your heart please have a read or research into how you can help too.
