Please Save The Unreal Series of FPS Games!
This is grave news, for on this day, December 14 (15 in some regions), 2022, Epic Games has made the completely shocking and inane announcement of delisting and ending online multiplayer support for the beloved multiplayer arena FPS duology Unreal Tournament 1999 and Unreal Tournament 2004 alongside their singleplayer-centered predecessor Unreal and its expansion pack Return to Na Pali on Steam and their Epic Games Store, with their GOG fates in an unclear state (as of this writing). In return, they will deem Unreal Tournament 3 X, which is a contested title in the series, as a free purchase onwards while promoting the arguably more popular yet extremely controversial Fortnite in the usual helpful manner, so to speak.
This may be a bit too demanding if not sounding pathetic, but to anyone reading this and are most likely affected by this shake-up however recently or not, *please save this veritable trilogy of quality singleplayer and multiplayer gaming from the hells of abandonware, loss of love and support from dedicated fans and makers, and, in the vein of fandoms, the feared overratedness of battle royales, unpolished AAA titles, and other such flawed gaming concepts!* It would truly mean a lot if they will be preserved from the meanness of time, age, and trending relevancy, for I and others can only do this since we don't have the capability for petitions, protests, and the like. Spread the word, people, for until then, we drift and hope...

Hi,
Do you write fight scenes if so, how do you go about executing them in a realistic fashion?
hmm it's interesting to use the word "realistic" in relation to fight scenes, because fight scenes are kind of inherently unreal. like if you get into an actual fight with someone, the police get involved, somebody gets charged with assault, and so on. and in my experience (as a witness) they are very short and messy, not to mention awkward. movie fight scenes are choreographed and moreover no one is supposed to get hurt while filming them.
but! there's boxing, tournament fighting, etc., definitely. in day to day life, however, fighting doesn't (and shouldn't) really happen.
so i'm taking realistic here to mean physically plausible, and my advice in that case is to keep the fight concise by summarizing movements, like in this example from gideon the ninth:
Tumblr media
"flurry of blades" is a good example of what i mean: a succinct description of many actions rather than attempting to choreograph a fight. you're writing prose, not directing a film, so that's not a task you have to give yourself.
here's a fight scene i wrote recently (note that it's only a draft):
In the middle of the night she heard the splintering of wood along with raucous drunken laughter. She ran out into the courtyard to find that the dojo had been broken into by a dozen bandits who were pillaging her food stores and tearing through her father’s things. She grabbed a bokken and cracked one of them across the back of the head. He went down, and in doing so, attracted the attention of the others who immediately turned on her. They circled her; she could barely see them in the dark, and she was groggy from being awoken in the middle of dreaming.  One attacked, and she managed to hit him but it did nothing, and the next moment she was on her back in the dirt, covering her head with her arms as they began to kick her and tear at her clothes. The one pulling her hair was suddenly lifted into the air and thrown into a wall. Another followed, and another, and the bandits inched away from her. She lowered her arms and risked a glance around the courtyard. All she could see was a blur as someone proceeded to incapacitate her assailants. Soon half of them had been knocked unconscious and the other half fled in such a hurry that they got jammed at the gate and had to shove each other through.
mostly my goal was to get to the point of things: the POV character is attacked by bandits and gets saved by an unexpected guest. my goal here isn't to be realistic, though. if i were trying for realism, i'd be focusing on the physical pain and terror of violence, because unless you're a professional fighter, experiencing serious violence can be a traumatizing thing. but most fiction that aims to entertain us asks for the suspension of disbelief that allows us to temporarily forget things like that.
so tl;dr, don't focus too much on positioning bodies in space, summarize movements, and focus on reaching the conclusion (who wins and what's the damage).

This is Eden! She/her, 20-22 years old (22 at time of Doomed By The Narrative), 5'1, a college student who's also in the college's gaming club! She's the best friend/sister of Aiden, another member of the club who's like super rich and inherited a fuckoff big manor from their parents (which I am mentioning exclusively for the context to explain the fact that the story is called In A Manor Of Speaking)
Eden is very very sweet and kind and energetic and fun. She's good vibes all around and she's friends with Everyone so hard. If you're familiar with my other OC I've shoved into one of my tournaments though, Amedeo, you... might know where this is going a little bit.
For a basic plot summary up until Eden has anything to do with anything, Aiden comes home one day with a demon, Viorel, who is VERY lost and confused and has no memory of how he got to the human world. They all pretty quickly discover Viorel is not the only demon coming through to the human world though. Vivian and Engel are hunting him down and don't believe him when he says he has no clue who they are. They send another demon after him to kill him, though it doesn't work well since he just befriends it and now it is also living in the manor having a good time. Afterwards, Amedeo, a member of the gamer club, starts acting... odd. He invites Aiden to hang out, and then they get kidnapped, Viorel having to go save them. It was only the first incident of many with Amedeo, and he slowly got worse, making everyone really uncomfortable and staying away from him.
Eden didn't want to sit by and watch this happen to her friend, so she tried asking it what was going on. It responded by attacking her, sending her on a trip to the hospital.
It was fine. It was ok. That was her fault, really. She should've known.
Amedeo was kicked out of the gamer club (she hadn't wanted that but she wasn't there to vote on it). Apparently he never went back to his apartment. Some time after his disappearance, Aiden died. She wasn't there when it happened. Viorel said it was Amedeo.
It was... it was fine. It was ok. It was awful. It hurt so much. Awful things kept happening to the people around her and she couldn't do anything about it. Her sibling was dead, it was getting so hard to breathe anymore.
It was fine. It was ok. Aiden... "survived" in a way. They came back as a ghost days later. Stuck in a computer, yeah, but they could still talk. They were still here. It wasn't fair of Eden to stay upset for long, not when Aiden was having the WORST time coping with their new form. So she puts on a smile and acts just like she did before. Everything's going to be alright. Even if she has to be the only one acting like it is.
More time passes. One day, she stares at the back window and finds... Amedeo. He's a mess. He looks like he's been hit with a truck, or like he's been sleeping under a bush the last several days. Frantically, Eden runs outside, chasing him down when he tries to run from her, and pulling him in for a hug. It was alright. It was going to be ok, she promised. How long has it been since you've eaten, do you need water, you can take a nap in one of the fancy beds, I promise I won't let Viorel hurt you I know you're worried, I missed you, I was worried about you, please come inside.
As time passed, things became comfortable again. Amedeo had really changed for the better and was trying so hard to make things right. Viorel built Aiden a new robotic body for them to haunt, and they were getting used to it well. The gamer club was getting back together. Eden, Viorel, and Aiden took a trip to the monster realm to learn more about Viorel's past after his sister showed up looking for him. Eden didn't... really understand what happened. Viorel was pretty upset, but she didn't know why. Just as always, she felt like she was missing something everyone else understood. This wasn't her story, after all. She was just there to smile and remind everyone it was going to be ok. She was a bright spot for them. She knew that. They returned to the human world, some new friends in tow, and things were back on track for a while.
It was fine. It was ok.

In the almost 2 years since all of this began, Reverie was the first person to ever ask her that.
Eden and Reverie begin hanging out a lot after that. Not just for the shoulder to cry on, they really do enjoy each others company. They got close, closer than Eden had ever felt with anyone. It felt... odd. She was having a really hard time naming her feelings for them. She cared about them but something was off. It was really hard to know what was nagging the back of her head. They kept bringing up weird existential ideas, never enough for a full conversation, but they really did have strange ideas about how the world functioned. She kind of liked it though. It was fun to consider the possibility. That maybe none of it was real. What a relief that could be...
"Hey. I want to show you something" Reverie told her one day. They guided her to a private room, making doubly sure no one was around. Confidently, they held out their hand. Above it, floating and glowing softly, was... a menu.
Save, load, quit, settings. A video game menu. Above their head, "player 2".
None of it was real.
Reverie is player 2 of the video game known as "In A Manor Of Speaking". They've played this game hundreds of times. Player 1... Viorel, had left them a long time ago, and has no memory of the nature of the world. So Reverie alone had been restarting the game over and over, trying to find a path that would let them finally beat the final boss and escape the game. If they could just win, they'd finally be able to leave and reenter the real world. 100% maxing out Eden's friendship level was one thing they still hadn't done, until now. They had a good feeling about this one. They were sure of it.
An NPC. That's all she was.
It made sense. She'd always felt that way. She wasn't even important to the plot. She knew it. Of course it'd take them this long to try maxing out her friendship, she was always just a background character. None of it was real. None of it mattered. She was doing such a good job of playing her role, wasn't she? A perfect side piece in a story that isn't hers.
She went along with it. Her odd feelings about Reverie made sense now, that wasn't fully her... she was programmed to feel that way. But she still cared about them. She still wanted to help. Shoving down all the thoughts, it felt so. Easy. To dedicate herself to their goal. She loved them, she cared about them, she hated them, she looked up to them. Something about them was magnetizing and she didn't want to leave. Of course. Of course she'd help. She knew now, that's what she was supposed to do. What a relief. None of it had ever mattered. It was a kind thought to her.
Now she was able to see the save points, the HP bars above peoples heads, sometimes she caught glimpses of dialogue boxes as Reverie spoke to people. They introduced her to someone very special that only the two of them could seem to see. Elysium. She was an AI made for the game to keep it running properly, and to rewrite bits of code, to expand the world they lived in. The game was always evolving because of her. Elysium acted rather cold and grumpy a lot of the time, but there was an undeniable warmth to her that Eden admired.
Knowing about the game was terrifying, but the time she spent with Elysium and Reverie... It was wonderful. She finally felt like she was somewhere she belonged. She never felt so special than when she was with them. It was fun, to be part of the game. It was the happiest she felt in a long time.
...Right?
She still didn't smile much anymore. Reverie dismissed her various concerns often, saying it was fine, she was an NPC, she wouldn't get it. There was always this look in their eye that gave her chills. Reverie would tell her to fight that monster, it's for the EXP. When she protested, they'd tell her, what's the problem? None of this is real. I'll probably have to reload anyways, so none of this will matter in the end. Reverie would get themself in dangerous situations over and over. When Eden was worried about them, Reverie never understood. If they died, they just come back, it wasn't a big deal.
They never really did look at her, or Elysium. Every movement they made felt scripted. Every word, carefully planned. None of it mattered, to them. If Eden was uncomfortable, what did it matter? She wasn't real. She wasn't real. She knew she wasn't real.
But it was fine. It was ok.
Months passed in a blur. Eden hadn't spent much time with her other friends the entire time. She wasn't even sure what they were up to. It didn't matter. They wouldn't have changed their actions if she tried. That was never her choice. But it didn't matter. It was time. Just her and Reverie, and the final boss.
As Reverie rambled about the plan, Eden silently stared down at her palms, as always. She was so... afraid. Worried. She wished she could just give herself some reassurance. ...And the game's menu silently popped up in her hands. It held Reverie's save. ...It wouldn't hurt, she thought. She pressed the save button. It gave her a little comfort.
It was so hard to focus she hardly noticed they were in the battle with Engel now. When had they...? It didn't matter. Reverie was shouting at her, and she snapped back into reality and joined the battle, sword in hand. Engel's blank eyes stared right past her, entirely focused on Reverie. Eden, took a step, and found herself behind them. Time seemed to slow. She didn't remember getting this close to them so quickly. But it was her chance. It was her time. She raised the sword, and brought it down.
Engel's head rolled to the floor, their body collapsing next to it. Reverie and Eden froze. Neither of them dared to breathe. Eden couldn't see anything but the blood on her sword. She nearly dropped it with how heavy it suddenly felt. But quickly Reverie's arms were around her. They picked her up, yelling in excitement, looking more happy than she had ever seen them. They smiled at her so genuinely, and everything melted away. That was all she wanted. She laughed too, the image of Engel's headless corpse disappearing from her mind, losing herself in the relief. It was all over.
The area around them faded to black and white, "THE END" appearing a few feet in front of Reverie. They dropped Eden, and ran towards it, reaching for the "quit" button. And then it was gone. The quit button disappeared right before they could hit it. Leaving only "Restart" and "Reload" beside where it had been.
Eden couldn't see Reverie's face from where she was, but she could feel the chill radiating from them. They were frozen place, the room silent. Then they laughed, something hollow and empty. Then louder, crazed and desperate. They collapsed to the floor, their laughs and sobs intermingling so well Eden couldn't tell the difference between them. She tried to reach out to them, but before she could reach them, she heard them speak.
"If I can't leave, then this world might as well rot."
A folder icon flashed above their now outstretched palm and they reached into it, crushing the code within. Eden immediately felt dizzy. The world began to crumble around them, glitching out in bright colors, awful noises emanating from the edges where nothing but void lay beyond. Eden could see flashes of other places, other people. The world was collapsing in on itself as Reverie laughed. It was so hard to think. It was so hard to be. Eden reached for her sword. It didn't want to stay in her grasp, but her resolve solidifying, she forced it in her hand.
Reverie turned toward her just in time for the blade to pierce their chest. They stopped, in shock, for a struggling heartbeat.
They laughed. They grabbed Eden's hands and pulled, plunging the sword farther through their back, and putting Eden's face closer to theirs. "Do you think this matters?" they taunted through wheezing breaths. "I'll just come back! I always have. I always will! This means NOTHING Eden!"
They stood there for what felt like eternity. Eden didn't know what to say and could barely even see them through the tears in her eyes. But slowly, slowly, Reverie's laugh trailed off. And their face betrayed a sudden hint of fear.
Nothing happened.
Nothing happened as their breath hitched again and their legs gave out, dropping them to the floor. Nothing happened as they coughed up blood weakly. Nothing happened. Their HP had already dropped to 0. It never took this long. Nothing happened. Frantically they opened the menu.
It was Eden's save. No, it was Reverie's. No... the names switched back and forth, never settling in place for long. "WHat did yoU DO?" they tried their best to shift their position despite the unbearable pain, looking for Eden. They spotted her in front of the "THE END" screen, processing what she was doing moments too late. She reloaded, and everything went black.
Through a painful haze of noise and color, Eden could hear Elysium's voice. "Do you see what you've done, Reverie?" "pl...ease..." "How the hell am I supposed to fix this?! Look around you Reverie! Look what you've DONE!" "ple.....please...pl... please" "I can only think of one way to fix this. I'm going to delete you. I hope you had fun in the time you were here."
"NO!" Eden screamed out. She didn't want this. But it was all she could do as she finally slipped into what could only be compared to unconsciousness.
She awoke who knows when on a couch in Elysium's room. After making sure she was ok, Elysium explained. She explained everything. Eden trying to reload a save she made when she wasn't even a player freaked out the game so bad, on top of the code Reverie had destroyed... it was a mess. Elysium had stabilized it. Reverie was... well, not really alive, but not really dead either. They were stuck somewhere in between, in the moment they would have died if they hadn't been a player who's supposed to reload if their save wasn't corrupted. But Elysium could fix it, she was sure she could.
Eden asked if this was how this was supposed to go. Elysium sighed, and said yes.
Eden's route in the game wasn't always like this. But Reverie had become so fixated on finding their exit and treating the world around them like nothing but a toy. Elysium hadn't known what else to do. So she rewrote the code, the story, she rearranged the narrative, so Eden would be learn about the game. So she would start to glitch out the system. So she could be invisible to Engel's eyes because she was glitching out so badly, so she could finally be the one to end the game. So Reverie would finally see there was nothing else. This world was all their was.
It was never about Eden.
None of it had ever had anything to do with her.
The narrative had been rewritten just for her. The months of pain. The horrible state Eden had found herself in, agreeing to Reverie's views of the world. That she was worthless. That she was nothing. That this world was a prison. All the sweet moments, all the comfort Eden had felt in those fleeting scenes. It was all for her. None of it was for her. It was always about Reverie. She was one more piece in this awful play.
Eden bid Elysium farewell, and went home.

The Sun Also Rises: The quintessential novel of the Lost Generation, The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta) is one of Ernest Hemingway's masterpieces and a classic example of his spare but powerful writing style. A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, the novel introduces two of Hemingway's most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. It is an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions. First published in 1926, The Sun Also Rises helped to establish Hemingway as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.
The Importance of Being Earnest: Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax are both in love with the same mythical suitor. Jack Worthing has wooed Gwendolen as Ernest while Algernon has also posed as Ernest to win the heart of Jack's ward, Cecily. When all four arrive at Jack's country home on the same weekend the "rivals" to fight for Ernest's undivided attention and the "Ernests" to claim their beloveds pandemonium breaks loose. Only a senile nursemaid and an old, discarded hand-bag can save the day!

Bucky is a retired Army veteran who plays for The Avengers clan.
What happens when you two meet?  Well... that’s what you’re here to find out!
Words:
A/N:  This is a Gaming AU with long-distance logistics.  This is written as a plus size cis female reader.  I started writing this a while ago and it’s still a WIP but I wanted to start getting it out there.  I update AO3 more than my tumblr so there will be extra chapters there before they hit here.  There is gaming speak and are some acronyms may be used but I’ll post those for each chapter.  Game descriptions heavily based on Unreal Tournament 3 which i used to play s hit-tonne of. I hope you enjoy.
Acronym/term glossary for Ch1: DM - Deathmatch TDM - Team Deathmatch HP - hit points or damage points Frag - kill KDR - Kill/Death Ratio
Warnings:  Gaming-typical violence and death, self-esteem issues, language/profanity, morbid humour.  This will become explicit 18+ at some point in the story, so fair warning.
***18+ content - for whatever reason I label this for adults only - minors do not read/interact***
Rockets of Love Master List
Tumblr media
It’s true what they say; the anonymity of the internet breeds confidence.  At least that’s how it was for you.
In real life you were diffident.  Not debilitatingly so, but enough to for you not to put yourself out there when it came to relationships.  You were single, by a combination of choice and circumstance; self-esteem issues lead you to see traps and tricks in even the most sincere of compliments, no one got through your defences.  At least no one you met face to face.  Not anymore.
Your outward displays of confidence were defence mechanisms.  Offensive humour, self-deprecating humour, and sarcasm were well used antics in your arsenal of tricks to hide how insecure you were about your body.  Now so much a part of who you were that you couldn’t remember a time when you weren’t that girl who made obscene comments just to keep people at arm’s length.
There’s nothing better than offending people to keep them away.
You were employed (semi-happily) in a job that paid well and gave you everything you needed to pay bills, keep your family home, run your car, and have holidays; top tier client support for Pulse, a multi-national tech solutions company.  You’d been there almost eight years and you had no desire to move on or up – you were comfortable.
If you had the choice to do anything you wanted, you weren’t sure what you would to do instead.  That would involve thinking about yourself on a deeper level, which wasn’t something you liked to do.
Anyway, that was you in the real world.
Digitally you were MoonDragon.  A sassy and confident girl gamer.  Skilled and formidable, with a reputation for badassery that preceded you into every game you played.  Your current game of choice – Orion Protocol; a fantasy first person shooter with an arena style multiplayer.  Never had a game hooked you quite as badly as this.  You’d been playing for almost two years now, and had been recruited into a clan six months ago.
The Avengers were a well-known clan.  Only elite players were asked to join, but more than that, it was like a family.  Good team dynamics, good sense of humour, lots of respect and support.  Team members were recruited after being vetted by one of the founding members, Steve Rogers aka Captain America, Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier or Natasha Romanov aka Black Widow.  That’s how you were picked up.
+Flashback – six months earlier+
You’d just saved Cap’s ass in a public team deathmatch when he was on the ropes with no ammo and only a basic issue pistol to defend himself.  Jumping into the fray on some temporary perk rocket boots, you’d sniped the heads off three jerks who were ganging up on poor old [AVG]Captain_America.
“Thanks for the save, MoonDragon.”  He said, picking himself up and running for a nearby weapon spawn.
You rarely talked in game with randoms unless coordination was needed (and rarer still for banter) but when he spoke his voice was that of someone older, not some annoying kid, so you decided to reply.
“No sweat, dude.”  You said stiffly.  “Three on one is a shitty deal, unless it’s a porno.”  You muttered, probably too quietly to be picked up on the mic.
Captain America laughed hard.  “They didn’t seem to cause you any problems.”  He said finally.
“I had the element of surprise.”  You couldn’t help a small smile that tugged your lips upward.  “It’s easy to get the drop when they’re all trying to teabag the infamous Captain America.”
“I’m infamous now, am I?”  The amusement in his voice was clear.
“I’d say so.”
“Good to know.”  He sounded like he was smirking.
“Everyone knows who you are.”
“Is that so?”
“Pretty much.”
“Is that how you’ve got such a high KDR?  You’re following me around picking off my would-be killers?”
It was a little flirty how he was talking to you and to be honest, you kind of liked it.
A new player joined the room but didn’t spawn onto a team yet.
“You caught me.”  You chuckled.  “I’m sneaking up behind them and pegging them with my plasma strap-on while they’re distracted.”
Captain America was howling with laughter so much he got himself killed.
“Wait!  Did I just hear strap-on and pegging?”  Another smooth deep voice spoke up.
[AVG]The_Winter_Soldier had spawned onto your team, evening-up the teams up at six a piece.
“Hey man!”  Captain America greeted his clan mate.
“What’s going on, Cap?  Those asshats on the other team are talking so much shit about the two of you, I just had to listen in to see what the fuss was about.”
You knew that when someone joined mid-game but didn’t spawn in that they were privy to the conversations from both teams.  It was a bit of a glitch with the game but wasn’t really an issue unless people were bitching about members of the other team and thought no one could hear them.  Which happened.  A lot.
“Well, MoonDragon here saved my ass a couple’a times but other than that I’m just messin’ around until the wife gets home from Pilates class.”
It was unusual for people to talk about their personal shit this openly but you supposed that these two clan guys knew each other pretty well and there wasn’t really anything too revealing in the information, no names or addresses etc.
“MoonDragon, huh?”  The Winter Soldier said.  “How about you, me and Cap here go give team blue a run for their money?”
“Oh lord.”  Cap chuckled.  “I feel some rage quits coming on.”
“Alright, Winter.”  You said, accepting the callenge.  “I’ll do my best to keep up.”
“Keep up?  You’re already owning the match.”  Winter said incredulously.  “Tell you what, next match we’ll start?  Give me a fighting chance at a score that good.”  He seemed friendly, like his Clan mate.
“You got it.”
“Awesomeness!”  Winter said, and you could almost hear the smile in his voice.  It gave you a smile of your own.
It felt good to have a bit of banter with a couple of players who weren’t arseholes or annoying prepubescent kids.
Orion Protocol was an R-rated (for violence) game, yet kids as young as 12 were playing the damn thing.  You weren’t a fan of kids at the best of times, and although you didn’t want to traumatize them, you also didn’t want to have to censor yourself because they were playing a game they weren’t old enough to play.  Let’s say you didn’t go out of your way to be overly obnoxious but when some asswipe came for you, you pushed back no matter how old they were.
The game ended with a red team victory and the blue team were very vocal in the post-game chat.  Five of the six were members of a clan tagged [KTA] and the sixth player left once the game was over.  You didn’t blame them, all that squawking of young teens was unbearable.
“You guys are going down.”  [KTA]69er said.
“How appropriately inappropriate of you to say so.”  You said with a chuckle.
Winter and Cap got it, they laughed too.
“We’re gonna fuck you up so bad even your mom’s not gonna recognise you.”  [KTA]Assassin piped up, brashly.
“Don’t start, kid.”  Cap warned.
Two of your own team dropped out, probably not looking forward to getting killed by a bunch of trolling kids.
“What does [KTA] even stand for?”  You asked, dryly.
“Kiss the anus.”  Winter threw it out there.
You snorted but stifled your laugh.  “Kinky toe appreciators?”
Cap almost choked.
“Kill Them All, you fucking morons.”  [KTA]Assassin said bitterly.
“Oh, we’re morons, are we?”  You said sardonically.  “Judged by a twelve-year-old whose balls haven’t dropped yet.  Peachy.”
“Oh, I like this one.”  Winter said with a short sharp laugh.  “Can we keep her?”
“I’m not twelve, I’m fifteen.  And your mom wasn’t complaining about my balls last night when she was sucking them.”  [KTA]Assassin was clearly the mouthiest.  The other five were barely audible mutterings compared to this little shit’s ranting.  “She’s gonna let me fuck her in the ass tonight too.”
“Well this is awkward.”  You said, faking sincerity.
“What’s wrong with this kid?”  Cap was almost offended.
“Yeah we know where she lives and we’re going round to fuck your mom in the ass tonight.”  [KTA]69er piped up.
At least they didn’t assume you still lived in your parent’s basement.
“Good luck with that kiddos, I think she might be a little indisposed.”  You sighed, knowing exactly where this was going.
“She’ll be more than that when I’m done with her.” [KTA]Assassin laughed shrilly.
“Shame the next map is Nexus instead of Proxima Centauri.”  Winter said softly.  “I fucking love that map.”
Proxima Centauri was one of your favourite maps too.  You knew it like the back of your hand.  But Nexus was a good map too, with its compass point warp gates high-up in the main room of the map, and its winding corridors around the outside.  It would prove to be a very fun match if you, Winter and Cap played well together.
“Well, kid, I’ll leave you a shovel by the gate but you better clean up after yourself.”  You said in a cautioning tone.  “Bring your own lube though.”
“You’re stupid, what do I want a shovel for?”
“If you really want to fuck my mother you’re gonna have to dig her up first.  It’s been a while so she might be a bit dry for ya.”  You got the words in before the countdown ended.
“Oh shit!”  Winter was guffawing.
“Decomposed.  Indisposed.  I might get those two mixed up occasionally.”  You knew just how to aim for shock value.
“Goddamn girl, you are bru-tal!”  Winter was still laughing.
“Sorry.”  You said the word but you weren’t sorry.  “Kids and assholes piss me off.”
In real life you wouldn’t dream of letting all of the words that formed in your head actually come out of your mouth, some of them -yes, but not all; they were so much more offensive and pretty damn harsh.  But online, with your identity hidden, anything was possible.  That’s why these kids and assholes found it easy to talk smack and threaten people, because they were untouchable.  Well, so were you.
“Don’t apologise.  Christ!  That was hilarious.”  Winter shut his mic off for a moment as the game was loading.  A phone rang over Cap’s mic before he shut his off too.
The game started and you didn’t wait for your cue.  You ran to the nearest weapon spawn, bumping right into [KTA]Assassin who had already picked up a scatter gun.  You knifed him in the throat and, jumping up and back, you shot him repeatedly in the face with your default pistol before he could shred you to pieces.
“FIRST BLOOD!”  The game announcer called.
With the scatter gun that had been dropped by your victim you picked up more ammo from the weapon spawn and cut a path through the map to collect your favourite things:  Sniper rifle, singularity grenades and rocket boots.
“Good start!”  Cap came back on audio first.
The teams were uneven, five to four.  Your team had a randomer who kept getting killed.  You felt sorry for them because with you and the two [AVG] guys, all of the blue team’s points were from your fourth man getting fragged.
“Hey, I’m gonna run with, um, CHUCKNORRISCAT.”  You read his name carefully.  “See if I can’t make his life a bit easier.”
“And she’s a team player!”  Winter said appraisingly, as if making a point.
“Sounds good.”  Cap said approvingly.  “We can split it, pick him up when we see him spawn.”
The [KTA] kids came for CHUCKNORRISCAT like the hordes of hell.  Each time you took them down they would come running at you again, practically throwing themselves on your bullets like lemmings.  There was no logic to their plan, giving out free points on the off chance that they might get one for themselves.  Dumb kids.
“This guy is sticking to the corridors.”  You informed them.  “But he’s bound to catch a rocket or a grenade sooner or later.  Can one of you come pick him up for me, I need to resupply?”
“Sure.”  Winter said, and you could hear a fire fight on his audio.  He obviously played with his TV on loud whereas you played with a top-quality headset.  “Where you at?”
“By the scatter gun again, headed towards the triple health.”
“Assassin has the double damage perk.”  Cap said.  “Almost got me.”
“Where’s he at?”  Winter groaned.  “I hate these kids and their damn powerups.”
“In the main room.”  Cap said.
“If it’s there they’ll use it.”  You chuckled.  “I like me a shiny pair of rocket boots.”
“That’s different.  Boots take skill.”  Winter grumbled and you almost giggled.
You’d laughed more times these last two games than you had all week.
Winter joined you, dropping down from the upper level to shadow CHUCKNORRISCAT.
“This pussy better be worth it.”  He teased.
“Who turns down pussy?”  You teased back.
All three of you laughed.  It felt good to let loose a little where it was safe and no one had a right to judge you.
“Cap might.  He’s a good boy.”  Winter said playfully.
Cap scoffed.  “Tell my wife that.”
You slipped away into the main room so you could use one of the warp gates to pick up a stash of singularity grenades which were on a long spawn timer that you mentally kept track of.
“Hey, don’t go through there.”  Winter sounded concerned.  “Double damage, remember?”
“There’s about twenty-five seconds left on it by my count.”  Cap informed you.
You didn’t respond, using your rocket boots to boost into the air as soon as you cleared the doorway.  Rockets started flying and some of them were targeted.  Three of the five [KTA] team were in there waiting, guarding the warp gate that lead to the double damage power up.  It was pretty futile because the power-up was already in play and with a five minute countdown on the respawn it wouldn’t be ready again for some time.
“Three of them in here.”  You said.
“I’m on my way.”  Winter huffed.
You dodged a homing rocket with a nimble wall jump and pinged a no-scope sniper shot at the kid who was camping on the west warp gate platform.
“HEADSHOT!”  The deep voice of the announcer called out.
“No, stay with Chuck’s pussy.”  You said, switching weapons.  “Two left now.”
Switching weapons quickly, you let out a stream of rockets to herd the empowered and glowing form of [KTA] Assassin towards a wall and behind some crates.  The kid moved to the corner where you herded him and you switched to the scatter gun, filling that whole corner with pellets that rebounded around behind the crates, shredding him to pieces.
“DOUBLE KILL!”
“Last one is running for the south corridor.”  You informed.  “I have the DP.”
“DP?”  Cap asked.
“Double Penetration.”
“Never heard it called that before.”  Winter snorted.  “That’s gonna stick.”
You threw a couple of scatter shots against the door frame hoping they’d rebound after the escaping [KTA] kid.
“TRIPPLE KILL.”
“Did you just spam that shit off a goddamn door frame?”  Cap laughed.
“It worked didn’t it?”  You smirked.  “DP’s done.  Five minute countdown.”
Communicating with others like this felt weird but right.  You had a feeling that you were even good at it.
“Would you look at that?”  Winter said in awe.  “Chuck’s pussy just got a double kill!”
“Don’t mess with Chuck, or his cat.”  Cap praised.
The rest of the match continued to be all jokes and fun.  Cap and Winter died once a piece, much to their chagrin, but all in all it was a complete clusterfuck for the [KTA] kids.
With three minutes to go or five kills left to get for a red team win. the whole blue team were camping out in the main room, waiting for the DP to spawn again.
“As much as I want to go in there and kill them, I’m feeling a bit patient.”  Winter said.
“That’s not like you.”  Cap teased.  “You afraid of a couple’a kids?”
“Nah, I’m just tryin’ to maintain my KDR prowess in front of the lady, man.”  Winter joked.
“I’m no lady.”
“That’s true.  You’ve got a mouth like a sailor.”  He laughed.
You couldn’t help but smile at his teasing.
“Well she’s doing better than both of us so I’d say she’s not impressed by your KDR, Buck.”  Cap sounded like maybe he was rolling his eyes.
Buck?  Weird.
“I totally am!”  You said playfully.  “I’m so impressed.”
They both laughed as they threw grenades into the room, aiming high up for the jump gate platforms.  One was off target.  It clinked against the wall and bounced down towards where you were behind cover.  The five [KTA] kids were spamming shots all over, it was only a matter of time before one of them caught you if you stayed put.  That grenade was headed your way too, and own-team grenades meant friendly fire.
Leaning out, you snapped your sniper sight, quick-scoping.  You plugged a shot into the grenade, exploding it early before it had the time to reach you.
That gave you an idea.  You had one singularity grenade left and one jump left on your rocket boots.
“I’m gonna hail Mary this shit.”  You said.  “If I die it’ll make you two look better, if not it’ll be the best play I’ve ever made.”
“Well, we’re so far ahead there’s not enough time left for them to get even three kills on us so knock yourself out.”  Cap said.  “Is there anything you need?”
“Couple of rockets to push them together and away from the warp gate would be nice.”
“You got it.”  Winter said.
The play went down like this:  Cap and Winter spammed a few rockets at the gate end of the platform to push the group to one side, you shot a few at the far end to keep the group together.  You caught a few rogue bullets but still had enough health to make it.  You engaged your boots, tossing your last singularity grenade up to the roof where it ricocheted down and slightly behind the group.  At the end of your jump you hit a wall, rebounding at an angle you quick-scoped and expertly sniped the grenade just as one of the kids realised there was a grenade dropping on his head.  He threw himself off the platform but it was too late.  The sniper shot exploded the grenade and the resulting singularity expanded in a glowing wave before sucking everything back on itself, including all five [KTA] players.
“VICTORY!”  The announcer called with fourty-five seconds left on the clock
“No fuckin’ way!”  Winter said in a strong New York accent that was more noticeable than before.  “All five?”
“Best.  Play.  Evaarrrr!”  You were pretty proud of that one.
“So, why haven’t we seen you around before?”  Cap asked sceptically.
“You have.”  You said.  “We’ve played together a few times actually, but I usually keep my mic off.”
“I think I’d remember a style like yours.”  Cap didn’t seem to believe you.
“When you’re kicking ass you don’t always see what the rest of us are doing.”
“But still…”
You received a friend request from Winter.  Not the default message begging ‘please be my friend’, and not the creepy kind that guys sent gamer girls when they want to flirt for nudes.
FROM:  [AVG]The_Winter_Soldier – Re: Join us?
“You got my message?”  He asked.
“I got it.”  You said with a sigh.
“Well?”
“I dunno, man.  It’s a commitment I’m not sure I’m ready for.”
“You got down on one knee already, didn’t you, Buck?”  Cap mocked him.
“What can I say?  I’m a sucker for a jumping headshot on a moving target that’s not a head but a fucking tiny grenade instead.”  Winter chuckled.
“That’s high accolade coming from you guys, thanks.”  You really did feel good about yourself.  These [AVG] guys were awesome players.  Cap and Winter were two of the best you’d seen in the public circuit.  You’d never played clan but you’d seen videos on youtube – clan play was rough.
“The offer’s there.”  Winter said.  “Think about it.”
You’d been too caught up in your discussion to realise that the next match was loading.  There had been no chatter from the blue team once the mics were open but then again you hadn’t realised that they’d all left as soon as the match was over.
“Looks like we’ll have to find another game or wait for this to even the teams automatically.”  Cap said.  “Probably means it’ll be us against her.”
“Yeah I’m not taking that matchup.”  You laughed.  “You guys will pulverise me.”
“Yeah ok, you and your 68:0 ratio says otherwise.”  Winter grumbled.  He sounded cute.
“One more kill and you’d have made it into his score card hall of fame.”  Cap teased.
“Hey, I’m gonna hit the hay, but it was cool to meet you guys.”  You had work early and really couldn’t be arsed to hear your boss, Angela, bitching about how you looked tired, again.
“Aww, well alright little lady.”  Winter put on a terrible southern accent.  “It was a pleasure.”
“We’ll see you around sometime.  Now I’m going to be looking out for your name.”  Cap said.  “What do you normally play?”
“Um, deathmatch, team deathmatch and singles.”  You said.
“One-on-one?”  Winter perked up.  “That’s cool, I love a good duel.  Hit us up sometime.”
“He’s the dueller, not me, but I’ll play.”
“Thanks guys.  Good games and g’night.”
You quit the game but before you were shut out of the chat channel you heard Winter say to Cap.
“She’s crazy good!  And soooo fucking cool.”
You blushed as you packed up your gaming gear, stowing it tidily away in the drawers of your desk.  You’d had immense amounts of fun with those two but getting to know people wasn’t something you did well.  Online was different though, there was this buffer between you and the real world, a veil that kept you hidden and allowed you to only show the parts of yourself that you wanted others to see, even if those parts weren’t wholly you but something completely fabricated.  Kind of like that theory that every hot chick online was an obese sweaty mummy’s boy still living in mummy and daddy’s basement.
You laughed out loud, a little jubilant that the [AVG] guys had been so stoked with how you played.  Winter’s friend request still lay unopened in your inbox.  You’d really need to think about it before you decided to join them.  You supposed that you could accept the friend request but hold off on joining their team, assuming they wouldn’t be offended if you turned them down.  Honestly you never thought you’d be good enough for a clan but that just goes to show that you weren’t the best judge of your own talents.
It was a couple of days before you accepted Winter’s friend request, and then Cap’s.  You learned that their names were Bucky and Steve.  You met Black Widow and learned that her name was Natasha.  After 1 month of playing with at least one of the three founding members every night, you finally agreed to join The Avengers and hadn’t looked back since.

personally i think these two make quite the pair.
age gap of a whole decade, one with a potentially big future ahead, the other, who's had a rocky path to success, still wildly under appreciated, feels like despite working hard for newcastle now, he'll never get the recognition he thinks he deserves. was that selfish of him?
matchday at saint james's park. they're up against burnley - a club that's spent a season in the championship and has now fought its way back up. weird match that is for nick. he's started his senior career at this club, has made more memories there than he has now at newcastle, better memories even perhaps. it's not like he's not happy here, after all he's playing champions league now. he's become big, some might say. he's "upgraded" like the younger lads at the club say, miguel at least. thinks that's a good thing, happy he can contribute here and play good games. but he's heard of burnley's new keeper - a very young boy who's delivered a magnificent performance at the u21 euros this year, granting england the win. double penalty save in the 96th minute of the final, keeping a clean sheet throughout the whole tournament, something no one had achieved before him - all the things nick never got to experience. and he knows he never will, at least it's more than unlikely.
"i'm getting old." nick sighs to the man two years his senior sitting next to him whilst tying his boots. "feels like i'll never get be on pickford's level now." kieran smiles. "what's it with you and jordan as of lately? feels like you always bring him up somehow."
"dunno. guess it's cause international breaks coming up again and i'll likely won't get called up again." kieran understands nick's frustration, even when he's older than nick, he still gets favoured by southgate and starts in most games for england. jordan is one of his best friends so he could never talk down his undeniable talent for england, but everyone knows that he won't forever be the country's number one, ramsdale will eventually step up someday. and nick never got there, his age aside, his talent seems to have always been overlooked by southgate, even when he'd been in the squad for as long as jordan had been.
"ah don't worry about it. gareth only calls you up for big things. like the world cups, remember." kieran caresses nick's shoulder, nick letting his head fall on the up of kieran's, almost melting into him in defeat. "or maybe even that new guy. everyone always says he's got the potential to be in the senior squad someday." nick says. kieran raises an eyebrow at him "trafford? yeah, he's no where near ready for that yet man. don't worry."
the match is about to begin - everyone gathers in the tunnel. nick puts on his gloves, notices dan chatting with one of the burnley players, when he suddenly makes eye contact with the new guy, the new keeper. he smiles at nick, to his surprise he's eye to eye with him, nick thought he was much smaller. no words are exchanged, james seems quite intimidated by nick.
after nick had to save a single sloppy ball early into the game, it's gotten quite around newcastle's goal. as expected, burnley didn't exactly have the best restart into the new season. but this gives nick the chance to analyse james's game better. he's doing well, the burnley players getting dominated by newcastle, but james manages to do quite a few good saves, ends up conceding two nevertheless. wonders if he could've done that at his age. probably not. when the final whistle is blown, nick and his teammates make their rounds to applaud the fans after another three points have been collected on this afternoon. james approaches him, pulling off his gloves to go in for a handshake. "well played, always been looking up to you. you're a bit of a legend here at burnley, at least that's what a lot of my teammates say. and i think that too." james smiles. "thanks, means a lot. seen you play in the euros this year. unreal. you were good today." nick says with a smile he's not sure he really means. james's eyes lit up, he's getting flustered. wants to say more to nick but is interrupted by one of his own teammates. their ways part - nick knows he won't forget this small interaction so soon. james probably doesn't quite realise the potential he has, the talent. feels just like when nick was his age, the self doubt was always there.
nick keeps thinking about his age. about how time flies, how despite him being in good health, he will never be a "legend". just another good keeper, never the best. no matter how many more clean sheets he'll play, he'll always be in pickford's and ramsdale's shadow, unable to step out. he knows he's good for newcastle, was good for burnley in his days there, but starting for england in something that's not a nations league game or a random friendly seems impossible to achieve. why is so determined on that anyway? he doesn't know. he knows he should be happy with what he's achieved at his own clubs so far, knows he can do even more. even better. but meeting james today was like looking into a mirror, like teleporting back to when he was his age. 20 years old. seems like an eternity ago. james was confident on the pitch, giving a 100%, saving balls coming at him from players with a lifelong experience. maybe that was just facade. so young. nick pulls his kit off and stares at himself in the mirror for a second. everyone always says he doesn't look his age, could pass for 25ish. maybe they're lying, he doesn't care. he yearns to be young again, being able to turn back time, work harder, have less self doubt. be more confident. be like james. he snaps out of it. is he really jealous of a 20 year old kid right now? embarrassing. "pull yourself together. you're playing champions league on wednesday." he says to himself.
in the shower he keeps thinking of todays events. his age. his future. and james.

Krissie's Big List of DRM-Free Games!
(This is an ongoing project that I will continuously update as I find more DRM-Free games to recommend) Update: It sadly seems I may not be able to add any more links, I may have reached the limit for one post.
--------------------------------
What do I consider "DRM-Free"?
I've seen people argue and nitpick over what they consider DRM-Free on reddit, so I wanted to be sure to clarify. I consider a modern PC game DRM Free if I don't need to be connected to the internet or log into anything to play the game. I don't necessarily mind the older PC games where you have to enter a CD key during installation, even though this could also be considered DRM. WUUUUGHALGBORK! WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH ABOUT DRM?! JUST CONFORM!
I can speak from personal experiences of situations in which case I've been fucked over by DRM: - My steam copy of Cities XL is impossible to play now because it requires a log in account from a site that doesn't exist anymore.
Not too long ago Epic games delisted all the Unreal games from digital store fronts, making them all harder to get a hold of. Unreal Tournament 4 never even got a physical release so it's only even still around thanks to fans saving and fixing up the game files before Epic cut off all access to them.
I was once locked out of playing my own copy of Minecraft for an extended period of time because something got messed up with my login.
Internet died and I was unable to run some of my games because they require constant internet connection to fully function (or function at all). This includes titles such as Killing Floor 2, or Red Dead Redemption 2, or Quake Champions.
-------------------------
A list of helpful links:
These sites and groups are part of what inspired me to start keeping track of and seeking to support DRM Free PC games. I've found their info to be very helpful at times, but there have also been times on the wikis where I would find info to be out of date as sometimes companies will decide to be mega-douchey and patch DRM into games that previously didn't have it.

Doom (1993)/Ultimate Doom
DRM Free on steam, GOG and in the physical cd-rom format.

Killing Floor
Killing Floor on steam is somewhat DRM-Free. You can actually run the game without steam for solo play, but you won't be able to change your character model or access your perks. Re-Loaded (PC Port Version)
This one can be a little confusing, as Steam has two versions of this game with the same title. According to the PC Gaming Wiki, the 10 dollar version of the game that has compatibility with Mac and Linux is the one that is a DRM Free PC port.
Quake
The steam version of Quake can be played DRM-Free using the executable "glquake" inside the game's main directory. This version of the game uses an interface more akin to the original, you won't get all the modern bethesda stuff that shows up when you launch the game through steam, so sadly this one is only partially DRM free.
Thankfully the modern version of the game is also available on GOG.
Quake 2
DRM Free on GOG.
Quake 3
DRM Free on GOG.
SCP 087
This short horror title is available DRM Free here
SCP Containment Breach
Available DRM Free here
SEGA Genesis Classics

Shadow Warrior Classic Redux
This title is available DRM Free on gog. You can also get the original DOS version for free here!
Slayaway Camp
DRM-Free on steam.
Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut
The steam version can be made DRM Free by following the instructions here.
Sonic CD (1995) / Sonic & Knuckles
The Sonic & Knuckles Collection is a physical collection from the 90s that contains both a modified version of Sonic & Knuckles and a PC port of Sonic CD. According to the PC Gaming wiki, the only form of DRM should be a disc check, which won't require internet. The newer steam version, (which was delisted in a slimey move by Sega to bully people into buying the newer Sonic Origins) is no longer available for purchase, but if you already have a copy, The PC Gaming Wiki has some instructions on ways to remove the DRM.
Thanks for being assholes, SEGA!
Sonic Mania
The PC Gaming Wiki has instructions on how to remove the DRM from the steam version.
Sonic Nebulous
A DRM free Sonic fan game. Can be downloaded here on mod db.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series
The first 3 games in the series are available DRM-Free on GOG here:
https://www.gog.com/en/game/stalker_shadow_of_chernobyl
https://www.gog.com/en/game/stalker_call_of_pripyat https://www.gog.com/en/game/stalker_clear_sky
Starbound
Available DRM Free on gog here:
On The Humble Bundle store, for some reason, only the 4 pack is listed as DRM-Free. :
Super Meat Boy
DRM Free at the Epic Game Store, Steam, and Humble Store.

Kieue Caprie's List of Games Finished in 2023: Entry 11
#31: Pajama Sam: There's No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside
What Platform? - Steam
Finished When? - 6/8/23
I had this game installed for the longest time but never got around to playing any of them. So I decided to play through it after having seen Limes (That's Limealicious) play through Spy Fox. It was pretty fun although I felt like I was going in circles a few times. It was still fun, though.
#32: Quake II (Remaster)
What Platform? PC, Steam
Finished When? 11/8/23
#32-A: Quake II - Call of the Machine
What Platform? PC, Steam
Finished When? 15/8/23
So, I never actually played Quake II in full until they released the remake. I always thought it was not very good simply because there was something missing. Turns out that the missing thing was the music which the Steam version lacked for some godawful reason.
So when the remake came out, I decided to give it a whirl, I did need a reason to try out my gyro-enabled controllers more tbh. It was fun, although it felt very difficult in a lot of places, it got so hard in fact that it got to the point where I had to bind quick-save and quick-load to my controller's function buttons to save my sanity.
Nightdive did a great job on the remaster, although they did kinda mess up on a few points such as the Railgun dealing less damage in SP and the shockwaves produced by certain enemies being next-to-impossible to counterplay. But other than that, it was a very solid remaster.
The new campaign was also really nice too, it had this kind of feel to it where you lose all your items upon completion so you can feel free to use the items whenever instead of saving them up for the final boss and unloading on them like I did in the vanilla campaign. Without spoiling it too much, I was not expecting certain inclusions in there. You'll understand what I mean when you get to those points if you decide to give it a look.
#33: Cruelty Squad
What Platform? PC, Steam
Finished When? 16/8/23
Not the first time I finished Cruelty Squad, probably not the last, but I felt like I wanted to play Cruelty Squad again because all my progress was gone, just like the apes. Armed with a gyro-enabled controller, I managed to make my way all the way through the depressing cyberpunk dystopian hellscape to the end, stonks and all.
Does it still hold up? Yeah, I'd think so, its got that feel to it that's hard to describe tbh.
#34: Quake III Arena
Tumblr media
What Platform? PC, Steam
Finished When? 19/8/23
Xaero turned himself into a statue. Funniest shit I've ever seen.
Quake III Arena was one of those games that just doesn't like my PC, forcing me to play a sourceport instead. It was kind of fun playing through the campaign, although it felt barebones compared to Unreal Tournament's. However, it does have one leg up on UT... it's still on Steam. (i'm still in pain from Epic removing Unreal and Unreal Tournament games from all online storefronts...)
#35: Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What Platform? PC, Steam
Finished When? 24/8/23
Where do I start with this game? Well, it's a great game with great vibes and a bumping soundtrack, what can I say? The movement is fluid, the boostpack is very helpful for platforming (...sometimes...), the characters are great, the art-style is amazing, and the story was about enough to hook me through it.
However, I have ONE big issue with the game: The combat. It's not entirely explained by the tutorial and it felt very floaty, inefficient, and the boss battles don't really give you a lot of feedback either, on top of them being complete bullshit sometimes (stunlocks anyone?). It's probably the weakest aspect of the game for me and it kind of drags everything down with it. Had the combat been more fleshed out or something and the bosses made more than just "find opening, hit three times, can't do anything else in the meantime", it would've been much better.
That said, I enjoyed my time with the game and I wanted to get it done before Armored Core 6 decides to throw everything into the backlog. Maybe now that I'm done, I can probably go back and fiddle with it from time to time, maybe try the custom graffiti modding dealie.
Also that one song where the singer yells ASS ASS ASS ASS in auto-tune is gonna haunt me for the rest of my ASS ASS ASS ASS life.

Gaming Across Generations: A Chronological Odyssey of Video Game Evolution
Video games have undergone a remarkable journey of transformation and evolution over the years. From the pixelated pioneers of the early arcade era to the cutting-edge virtual experiences of today, gaming has continuously redefined itself. In this article, we embark on a chronological odyssey, exploring the pivotal moments and defining characteristics that have shaped the ever-evolving landscape of video games generations.
The Birth of Pixels: The 1970s and 1980s
The story of video games begins in the 1970s with the birth of arcade gaming. Atari's Pong, the simple yet addictive table tennis simulation, captivated players and set the stage for the industry's growth. The late '70s and early '80s saw the emergence of iconic games like Space Invaders and Pac-Man, ushering in the era of pixelated graphics and catchy chiptune soundtracks. These early games laid the foundation for an industry that would soon become a cultural phenomenon.
The Rise of Home Consoles: The 1980s and 1990s
As the '80s rolled on, home video game consoles took center stage. Companies like Atari, Nintendo, and Sega vied for supremacy. Nintendo's release of the NES in 1985 marked a turning point. It introduced gamers to beloved characters like Mario and Zelda, setting a high standard for game design and storytelling. The concept of save files brought depth to gameplay experiences, making players emotionally invested in their virtual adventures.
The Era of 3D Gaming: The Late 1990s and Early 2000s
The late '90s and early 2000s brought the advent of 3D graphics, revolutionizing the gaming landscape. Titles like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom paved the way for the first-person shooter genre. Sony's PlayStation, released in 1994, was a game-changer with advanced graphics and groundbreaking titles such as Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid. This era shifted towards more mature storytelling, cinematic experiences, and expanding gaming demographics.
The Dawn of Online Multiplayer: The Late 1990s to 2000s
The late '90s and early 2000s saw the rise of online multiplayer gaming, transforming video games into a social experience. Games like Quake and Unreal Tournament popularized competitive online play, laying the foundation for esports. Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) like World of Warcraft connected millions of players in vast virtual worlds, creating communities and friendships that transcended geographical boundaries.
Mobile Gaming Takes Center Stage: The 2010s
The 2010s witnessed the disruptive rise of mobile gaming. Games like Angry Birds and Candy Crush Saga became cultural phenomena, accessible to players on the go through smartphones and tablets. The launch of the Apple App Store in 2008 opened the floodgates for a vast array of mobile titles, making gaming a ubiquitous part of daily life for people of all ages. The simplicity and accessibility of mobile games broadened the gaming demographic further.
Esports Ascends: The 2010s
The 2010s marked the explosion of esports onto the global stage. Competitive gaming became a mainstream phenomenon with professional leagues, multi-million-dollar prize pools, and legions of passionate fans. Games like League of Legends, Dota 2, and Overwatch captured the imaginations of millions, and esports athletes achieved celebrity status. Esports not only challenged traditional sports but also demonstrated the potential for video games as a spectator sport.
The Emergence of VR and AR: The Future
As we look to the future, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are poised to redefine how we experience video games. VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR offer immersive, three-dimensional experiences that were once the stuff of science fiction. AR games like Pokémon blend virtual and real worlds, encouraging exploration and social interaction. These technologies promise to push the boundaries of gaming even further, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.
The journey of video game evolution has been a remarkable one, from the early days of Pong to the boundless possibilities of VR and AR. Gaming has not only entertained but also influenced culture, technology, and storytelling. As we move forward, the world of video games will continue to evolve, offering new horizons of innovation and creativity. Whether you're a veteran gamer or a newcomer, the rich tapestry of gaming history ensures that there's always an exciting adventure awaiting you in the world of pixels and play.

TimeSplitters 2 - Finished 22/01/2023
Tumblr media
Finally beat this game after owning it for years on-end. Not gonna lie thought I would never go back to this one; I remember me and my friend trying to co-op this game on the PS2 years and years back and being utterly bored and annoyed at the first level, where then we just switch over to the multiplayer modes. Now that I’ve finally beat it I can definitely see why I quit, but I think I still had my fun with it.
First off gotta say off the bat I played this game with a Keyboard + Mouse mod, which sure is the unintended play method and none of the levels are designed around it (and it shows), GOD was I not gonna play this game with a controller. One because it’s a very hard sell already for me to play an FPS with a controller (I struggle very much with console FPS games), but the specific Goldeneye-style gameplay from this game feels particularly sluggish for me in this regard. It’s mostly a personal thing I’ll admit but the era before Halo normalized how console FPS games should be made feel almost uncomfortable for me to play.
But hey, for a game that released what, less than a year after Combat Evolved, it’s pretty fun I think! I can see why people say it’s the peak of Goldeneye-style shooters. There’s a level of variety in the campaign here, from the levels to the enemies to the guns to the characters, that feels basically unmatched even in modern FPS games. Although not all the levels are created equal - the mission-style structure, while appreciated a lot of the time due to the not completely drab one-note linear structure seen in more modern titles, can often lead to a lot of objectives that either aren’t clear and require backtracking or will just break entirely. Also, a lot of the NPC-focused levels become an exercise in pulling teeth out because of how enemies will see you from a million miles away in stealth missions or how allies will just run to their death, causing you to reset the entire level.
Oh yeah, the checkpoints are trash as well. I’d argue that it’s even worse then Halo, and not by a small magnitude. Some levels will only have one checkpoint towards the beginning of the level and will force you to go back to it each time you fuck up. Even if normal isn’t too difficult with KB+M controls, you’ll likely be using save-states anyways for some of the later levels for this alone. And then there are the obvious issues from being an old FPS game on console - no instant commands for changing weapons means you’ll be scrolling back and forth between weapons, often missing one, then having to go back until you finally pick the weapon you wanted, all the while you’re under fire.
However, for as dated and as many issues as Timesplitters 2 has, I have to give it credit for its insane creativity at points, so many ideas they manage to cram in while still having a consistent gameplay feel. AND not to mention all the different side content - not only the multiplayer with an insane amount of gamemodes from regular deathmatch to eliminations to random game modifiers to health management modes to capture the flag, but it also gives you an Unreal Tournament style singleplayer arcade mode to play these modes in record time, not to mention a challenge mode where you’re tasked with different objectives under certain timelimits. It’s hard not to see Timesplitters 2 as the full experience for this type of game because of this.
I honestly think I’d love a modern take on Timesplitters 2, even a simple PC port sounds like it’d be a lot of fun. That doesn’t seem likely though, thanks to many reasons, the current gaming market, the state of the Timesplitters brand, and the desire to play these types of games again in general. If anything though, at the very least I’m definitely interested in trying Future Perfect, hearing from a lot of people that it feels easier to control and is better aged than 2 makes me hopeful, might even try to play it on a controller this time, or maybe even co-op! But, for now, I’m glad I finally took the three hours that Timesplitters 2 took me to beat, if anything to close that window and see why people loved it so much (even if I’d rather just play Halo).

Bedard's four assists lead Canada over Sweden on New Year's Eve at world juniors
Connor Bedard had four assists to tie Eric Lindros for Canada's all-time points record at the world junior hockey championship as the tournament hosts wrapped up preliminary round play with a dominant 5-1 victory over Sweden on Saturday night.
Brennan Othmann, with two, Joshua Roy, Tyson Hinds and Kevin Korchinski scored for the Canadians. Thomas Milic made 22 saves. Ludvig Jansson replied for Sweden, which got 39 stops from Carl Lindbom.
Canada, which wore its black jerseys on New Year's Eve, will face Slovakia in Monday's quarterfinals at the men's under-20 event, while Sweden is set to take on Finland. United States will face Germany and Czechia will play Switzerland in the other matchups.
The presumptive first pick at the 2023 NHL draft, Bedard has played just 13 total games at the world juniors, while Lindros registered his 31 points in 21 contests over three tournaments.
The 17-year-old from North Vancouver, B.C., who wasn't shy about throwing his weight around against Sweden, leads this showcase with 18 points in four games, while his 14 career goals are tied with Jordan Eberle for Canada's all-time national record at the world juniors.
The first New Year's Eve game at the world juniors since the 2020 tournament, and Canada's first Dec. 31 victory on home soil in eight years, saw the host country shot out of a cannon in front of an electric and well-lubricated crowd inside a sold-out Scotiabank Centre.
Roy took a pass from Bedard and roofed his third goal of the tournament just 57 seconds into the first period before the Swedes took a penalty to send the Canadians and their lethal power play -- which entered the game 11-for-16 -- to work.
It didn't take long to strike as Bedard glided over the blue line and fed Shane Wright, who in turn found Othmann for his first at 2:08.
Canada went up 3-0 at 11:45 when Bedard and Logan Stankoven set up Tyson Hinds for his second.
Canadian forward Zack Ostpachuk was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing moments later, opening the door for Sweden -- which had absolutely nothing going on -- to get on the board when Jansson scored his first at 16:21.
Milic made a terrific desperation left-pad save on Jonathan Lekkerimaki with five minutes left in the second before the goaltender and Canada's penalty killers survived a Swedish two-man advantage for 53 seconds.
Othmann then put things out of reach 35 seconds into the third when he scored his second of the night off a pass from Dylan Guenther.
Bedard then passed to Korchinski at 12:42 for the defenceman's first -- and the star centre for the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats' record-tying assist to send the Canadians to the quarters with by far their best performance of these world juniors.
DOMINANT CANADA
The countries played for the first time since the 2018 gold-medal game, which Canada won 3-1 in Buffalo, N.Y.
Canada improved to 9-1 on home soil, while Sweden's last victory over the North American powerhouse came in the preliminary round of the 2015 tournament in Finland.
UNDRAFTED MILIC SHINES
The Canadian goaltender is the only player on his team's roster passed over at the NHL draft.
"One of the bigger shocks for me," Bedard said of the 19-year-old from Coquitlam, B.C. "We're hopeful for him to get drafted."
Milic was 11-2-1 with a .919 save percentage and a 2.35 goals-against average with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds this season before joining up with the national team.
"He's been unreal," Bedard added. "Really good goalie."
CARLSSON, BEDARD RESPECT
Bedard is, as it stands, the slam-dunk top pick in 2023, while Swedish forward Leo Carlsson is in a group of players along with Canadian forward Adam Fantilli expected to be vying for the No. 2 slot.
"Special player," Bedard said of Carlsson. "Some unreal hockey IQ."
"Really good offensive skills," Carlsson countered. "Biggest game I've played."
LINDBOM LOVES CROWDS
The Swedish netminder said before Saturday's game he looks forward to tough playing environments like the one inside Scotiabank Centre on New Year's Eve.
"I love the big crowd," said the Vegas Golden Knights draft pick. "I love the crowd booing you, going against you. I love it."
"Fires me up."
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 31, 2022.

GOD, I HATE CRYING AND I HATE CRYING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE, BUT I DIDN’T CARE THAT MY FAMILY WAS IN THE ROOM WITH ME BECAUSE IT FINALLY HAPPENED. IF I HAD BEEN ALONE, I WOULD HAVE SOBBED LOUDLY AND MAYBE SCREAMED, BUT I COULDN’T HOLD BACK MY TEARS. LEO FINALLY GOT HIS WORLD CUP AND I WAITED YEARS AND YEARS FOR THIS. YEARS OF HEARTBREAK AND SUFFERING AND HE FINALLY GOT BACK TO THIS STAGE AND HE WON IT. AND HE DID IT ALL AT THE AGE OF 35! THIRTY-FIVE!!!!!! AND HE WASN’T A FADING VETERAN RELEGATED TO A BIT ROLE. HE WAS BY FAR THE BEST PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. HE ALMOST GOT THE GOLDEN BOOT HAD MBAPPÉ NOT GOTTEN THAT LAST PENALTY. HE BROKE RECORDS DURING THIS MATCH. HE WAS INVOLVED IN EVERY SINGLE GOAL DURING REGULAR PLAY FOR ARGENTINA, FROM THE PENALTY TO THE SECOND ONE THAT STARTED FROM HIS SUBLIME PASS, TO THAT CONFUSING LAST GOAL WHEN THEY NEEDED HIM IN THEIR DARKEST HOUR. THE FIRST PENALTY AND THEN THE ONE HE TOOK IN THE SHOOTOUT WERE SO CALM AND SIMPLE AND THAT WAS THE GENIUS OF IT BECAUSE WOW, THE CONFIDENCE!!!!! AFTER HIS TROUBLE WITH PENALTIES IN BIG GAMES BECAUSE OF THE PRESSURE, BUT HERE HE WAS, SINKING EVERY ONE OF THEM IN THIS WORLD CUP SAVE ONE AND SHUTTING UP THE HATERS WHO SAID HE NEVER SCORES BY GETTING THE MOST GOALS HE EVER DID IN A SINGLE WORLD CUP RUN. HE CONTROLLED THE MATCHES AND FOUND PASSES THAT WEREN’T THERE. UNBELIEVABLE. OTHERWORDLY.
And “otherworldly” can apply to the way that there was such a sense of destiny around this team. It felt almost spiritual in a way. They were going to win it. They weren’t the best team. They had good but not great players. But they were going to win and it was enchanting to see the fanbase singing for them and the players going to the fans after every goal and match like they were in sacred communion. I’ve never, ever seen anything like this before nor have I ever seen a team so loyal and in love with their leader. They were ready to die for him. Some of them even said as much. And I’ve never seen the entire world unite like this, in a mutual desperate desire to see a player win a title, other than, of course, Copa America last year when Argentina was in the final and then won against Brazil. Millions across the globe who are from all different backgrounds and who support different national teams and clubs putting aside everything to rally behind him. I don’t think I’ll ever see something like this ever again in my lifetime. Every bit of this journey was unreal and beautiful, and you couldn’t have written a better story.
When I’ve calmed down more about the final, I’ll appreciate how dramatic it is too because it just adds to the myth! Especially because everyone can shut up now about how Argentina made it “easily” to the final (lol ok) and how Maradona is better because he won a WC and did it with an average time like ARGENTINA WENT UP AGAINST ARGUABLY THE BEST NT IN THE WORLD (so they had the biggest obstacle to their final at the last stretch of their race which is stressful), TOTALLY TROUNCED THEM FOR ALMOST THE WHOLE MATCH (you can’t say France didn’t put up a good fight because they didn’t even put up A fight; they were barely present in their own match), AND THEN HAD A FANTASTIC PENALTY SHOOTOUT (you can’t say this is down to luck when you look at their record, see how many shootouts they’ve done, and the way that the penalty takers and Dibu handled themselves). And Leo did something similar. No stars in his team except for his aging companion Di María who’s not what he used to be anymore and he nearly singlehandedly dragged them to that cup regardless of skill and support because they were willing to give him everything and he them.

Segasoft lose your marbles
Tumblr media
The game also packs a few backgrounds, which will cycle as you progress and your high scores are recorded. Also, with later levels, the speed of the marbles increases, so you have to react quickly as well. The drill thus, is to keep an eye on the way you arrange them, as you can't always count on the PC throwing marbles your way that can immediately be discarded. The idea is to arrange the falling marbles in such a manner as to keep them in short numbers, so as to allow others to come. Each falling set has three marbles and if you manage to match three vertically, horizontally or diagonally, they disappear. This is a marble color matching game, where you have marbles coming your way in vertical rows from above, and you have to try and match them in color. Use your mouse to navigate through the maze. Unfortunately, after losing your marbles for a while, it becomes apparent that the game AI isn't all that tough. Partial list of games supported on Heat. The game is divided into five levels and each level has five rounds. In June 2008, CNET hailed as one of the greatest defunct websites in history. In an attempt to save, the value of degrees were cut by 80 percent, however at this point the damage had been irreversible.Īlso an issue which saw the end of was that new games had their own built-in browsers and no longer were using matchmaking sites like, Quake III Arena being one such game at the time. Many players would simply launch the game launcher and let it hang, thus no game was run but no staff could tell if they were playing or not. However players who were smart would go to the lobby which allowed players to play such games as StarCraft over a fake LAN while still being logged into. In an attempt to stop this behavior created a "parking police" which would go around looking for such rooms. Numerous players would set up Quake II games where you could see 30 or more players at night, simply logged in and no-one playing. Players could easily make $4 or more a day from to spend online. At the current time the average player had $10 worth of degrees or more in their account, however was only paying $5 a month as premium membership fee.Ībuse of was rampant near the end as players would leave their computers logged into all day and night even when not at the computer themselves. This was due in large part to financial difficulties. In September 2000, it was announced that and HeatCIGL would be shutting down on October 31, 2000.
Tumblr media
Later partnered with a large web site Chips & Bits' online game superstore which allowed players a vast selection of games, hardware and even magazine subscriptions. Degrees could be spent online first at a run store where players had a small selection of games and computer related items to pick from. All players would accumulate degrees however only players who were premium members could spend them and not have their degree count reset at the end of the month. 's degree system would pay players to play, one would receive degrees per hour spent online playing. The league also gave away a $5,000 "Excellence in Gaming" College Scholarship and $600 for each player in their All Star Tournament. Students from 1,100 registered schools would play Quake II or Unreal Tournament in teams representing their colleges, with play-offs at the end of the season. was also the home a collegiate gaming league called HeatCIGL (College Internet Game League). had a loyalty program, in which members, known as "Foot Soldiers", received shirts and dog tags. The "currency" in the gaming system was "degrees", earned through playing games, game-related or general trivia contests, viewing ads, or other actions (like hosting enough game rooms in a time period). was based on a licensed version of the MPlayer Internet multiplayer gaming system, which itself later became GameSpy.
Tumblr media
hosted both Sega-published first- and second-party games, as well as popular third-party games of the era, such as Quake II or Baldur's Gate. was an online PC gaming system produced by SegaSoft, Sega's PC game division.

So the Fortnite guys were developing Unreal Tournament right? Do you think that ship has sunk and they shifted projects because not enough public took interest, or because execs felt the battle royale craze needed to be quickly tapped into?
That ship “sunk” because the people at Epic misread what people wanted from Unreal Tournament. UT3 was kind of a mess in a lot of ways. A lot of the weapons didn’t feel right, it was butt-ugly, they messed up some of its most popular modes, and they added this incredibly superfluous story mode that the game honestly did not need or benefit from.
Instead of focusing on making a better version of the thing people already liked, they changed a lot of things that didn’t need to be changed. They simply made the wrong moves.
Epic actually has a new Unreal Tournament game now, but it’s almost 100% community-supported, to the point where it doesn’t even really ship with too many maps and a lot of things about it are incomplete. Epic is letting fans fill in a lot of those blanks themselves, some of which ends up becoming an official piece of the game. It actually had a major update in June, but I can tell you from experience that it still feels very, very far from polished. And given this version of Unreal Tournament’s been around for a couple years now at least, it would be safe to assume that progress has been extremely slow, in spite of the recent update.
The thing with Fortnite is that it existed as a separate product before the Battle Royale part was added. It was originally just the “Save the World” mode, where you build forts and defend against a zombie invasion. Epic worked on that mode for four years before releasing it in early access, and after those four years, it still wasn’t really “done” or in a terribly polished state. GiantBomb actually has a video where they play Save the World with the developers right before it was to go public, and they sound so exhausted by having worked on the game for four years and still have so much left to do. Like they climbed the tallest mountain and realized they were still only halfway there.
I assume Battle Royale was injected in to Fortnite because the “Save the World” mode was struggling to catch on and they wanted to provide more value and maybe recoup all the spent development resources. Fortunately for Epic, it took off in a big, big, big way, and they’ve continued to make the right moves in supporting it over time. Unfortunately, it also means they wasted four years on the “Save the World” mode and have effectively left it to gather dust. “Save the World” does still get updates on occasion, but nothing even close to what the Battle Royale mode does.
The Battle Royale mode in Fortnite was also one of the first, real legitimate PUBG “clones” on the market – if anything, Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode helped the lead the charge in the “craze.” Some have speculated that’s because BlueHole (PUBG’s developers) worked with Epic to develop the technology that makes the whole “100 players on the same server” stuff work – meaning Epic had free access to that code and could plug it in to whatever they had laying around. So, they plugged it in to Fortnite, and thus that game’s Battle Royale mode was born.
The PUBG developers actually sought to sue Epic for this, but they backed out of their lawsuit for unknown reasons.
