the 2021 oscars is over but i guess i'm still on the watching-oscar-related-movies run

today i saw A Sun (2019) which was not actually nominated, but it was shortlisted for best international film. we chose it despite not having seen any of the other international nominees because it's a taiwanese film, and despite being from taiwan, i haven't actually seen too many movies from there.

the movie follows a family's turmoiled life after their youngest son is convicted of assault and put in juvie, including a teenage pregnancy, financial troubles, and mental health issues.

it's by far not a perfect film. i had some qualms with some of the choices in editing and tone. but the first half hurt my SOULLLL watching the family dealing with the aftermath and their son trying to become better in juvie depsite his extremely troubled youth. about 2/3 through the movie i thought it was going to draw to a natural end, but then it kept going, and i was a little confused and honestly afraid to see where it was going, since it felt like a completely different movie from the first half. luckily it was saved by a VERY satisfying ending (to me at least. i was straight up cheering).

7/10. i feel like the story could be somewhat streamlined and balanced out, but overall it's a good watch. it's on netflix (in canada at least) and i'd say give it a looksie if you like slower drama movies, but be on the lookout for general violence (in the opening scene someone's hand is graphically cut off, the rest of the movie is relatively tame, someone gets hit with a car) and a suicide scene (not graphic but you see the body being taken away).

1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?

Like... all of them right now because the Shotoko College Hockey AU owns my soullll at the moment.  But for other reasons, ‘Wreathed in Gold’ is my eventual epilogue to Rooftop Necromancy and I am not writing that yet because I want to save it for when I get sad and need something comforting to write x.x

3) what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?

At first, to kick things off, I’ll just slap everything into a google doc.  Basically if it comes into my head, I fucking write it.  They’re generally bad but there are some gems there.  Then, once I have the fic settled in my head, I start to write chronologically.  I might skip ahead a liiiittle if I’m stuck and need to just write something, which is when I push ahead to something I do want to write.  So like... all three, lol.

11) what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?

Oof.  Probably my ability to show and not say.  I feel like that’s the same for most people though.  It’s baby writing 101.

13) your strengths as an author

DIALOGUE!!!!  Especially dialogue between two people shooting the shit or flirting or whatever.  I can legit get myself out of a slump by just writing dialogue.

25) copy/paste a few sentences or a short paragraph that you’re particularly proud of

‘ The sink had been clean before and it was quickly cleaned again and then Hizashi had nothing else to do, nothing else to do but to look over to Aizawa’s patient face.  He eyed Hizashi for a moment before he leaned over and gave him the kind of slow, heated, ‘I have nowhere else to be but right here’ kisses that Hizashi had always struggled with.  He’d never known if he loved the reminder to slow down or felt trapped by it.  The answer was probably both.

i just finished reading the crooked kingdom

i could go on and on about how much i loved the ending (the final chapter(s) featuring inej 1. being gifted the ship of her dreams 2. reuniting with her parents and 3. exacting revenge on per haskal and ensuring he lives the rest of his life in fear and misery .....????? DELICIOUS)

but at the moment i’m also just sitting here thinking about how beautiful and unique and masterfully crafted inej and kaz’s romance was.... like ever since the scene when he kisses her should i was really like god damn .. i felt the yearning in the pits of my soullll bitch i FELT IT DEEP INSIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kaz who wants inej more than he can even bear to say but because of his trauma physically cannot touch her or be close to her the way either of them want, and inej who has held onto her faith and opened her heart to her friendships despite the abuse she endured at the menagerie ... like she knows exactly how he’s feeling they understand each other like no one else does

and i love how she is willing to fight for him but she won’t waste her life trying to save him...their final scene together was just so fragile and beautiful and it truly could have gone one way or the other but when it said kaz wasn’t wearing his gloves i just knew i just KNEW kaz would open himself up to her and i was like YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! OPEN UR HEART BITCH OPEN UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and it just so nicely parallels the scene in six of crows where inej is like "i will have all of u or i will have none of you" something like that and kaz is basically like .. well .... im in love with u but fuck that .... but when inej came to the dock to see kaz for what she thought would b the last time, all ready to end things for good, kaz is there gloves off bearing all of her heart’s greatest desires and then inej is like ... so are u gonna help me destroy the scum of the earth or what and he’s like ... yea sure.. i just ... wow ........ powerful stuff

seriously aaaa i’m watching an LP of this and I just feel so SAD for the monsters! I mean they’re all regular animals or innocent civilians or heroic members of the same task force as the hero, who all got infected by an evil sentient virus thing. I feel like they don’t really focus on the sadness enough, you’re just meant to be scared of them and blast them into gory bits. They got so close to having an emotional moment with that kid and the dog, but instead it just ends in STUPID KID THATS NOT YOUR DOG ANYMORE ITS A MONSTER and like.. meant to be mad at him for trying to defend it?? and then it just dies and neither it or the kid ever gets mentioned again. Also his mother apparantly turned into a monster and was shot offscreen and again we don’t get a proper scene with the proper emotional weight??

But man the dog hurts my emotions the worst because SHE WAS CLEARLY STILL AWARE AND GOOD! She tried to run away from the kid! She knew she was infected and didn’t want to hurt anyone! Even if I’m meant to believe the stupid ‘everyone infected loses their sentience instantly except the single main character’ contrivance.. like.. you could have... you could have at least been sad about killing it. YOU TRIED TO MAKE IT SAD SLIGHTLY BUT IT WAS WAY SADDER! I DONT CARE ABOUT ANY OF THIS PLOT AS MUCH AS I CARE ABOUT THAT DOG! Goddddd I’m tearing up just imagining if the game had better graphics here?? Like would we have seen the poor dog half-turned and dragging its zombie body down the hallway, trying to get away from everyone she loves before she hurts them? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO ADD THAT TIDBIT THAT SHE WAS TRYING TO GET AWAY T____T “Dad, I think Sheeva’s sick” AWAAAAAAAAAGHHHH MY SOULLLL Fuck, please give me an au where this dog got the Magical Protagonist Powers too and was able to stay sentient and just have cool powers and be a cool sidekick and stay forever throughout all the sequels and maybe the kid could have a role beyond being motivation for his dad and actually appear in the sequels as a badass monster fighter too with his good girl monster dog AAAAA

Oh and apparantly some hard to find dialogue in an artbook somewhere says that the guy who saved the kid from the dog was actually the dog’s original owner, which is NOT IMPLIED ANYWHERE IN THE ACTUAL SCENE despite it being A GOOD SAD! like seriously wtf in the scene he’s all heartless ‘its just a monster’ and ‘stupid kid trying to save the monster’ and like it could have added so much if they made it clear he was acting that way on purpose to try and steel his nerves to kill his own pet? like it could have been the archetypical emotional zombie infectee scene BUT I’D STILL PREFER IF THE DOG SURVIVED, THANKS
