Back when SAO Pride Week was ongoing, I wrote a draft for the Free Day prompt that I never posted. It was kind of a queer reading of SAO? Meta Essay Thing? Anyway here’s a self-indulgent, casual analysis of why I think some of SAO’s themes can resonate with LGBT youth under the cut
Tumblr media
Sword Art Online is... not exactly the sort of work I expect to see people who are LGBT gravitating towards. Despite that, I’ve seen people say SAO helped them come to terms or reflect their own identity, and if not that, then at least serve as a comfort show. Which is unexpected to me; SAO is, in many ways, still a shounen series aimed at a traditionally masculine audience, and as much as I love it and the characters and how many cool girls with swords there are in it, I still wouldn’t exactly call it a Super Progressive Woke piece of media
So why does the idea of Sinon being trans feel so fitting, yet vindictive to me? Why does that mere thought bring me more satisfaction than seeing even some canon trans characters do? I feel like there’s something about SAO’s narrative that feels mirroring of my own story, specifically as a LGBT person. “I like these characters so I want them to be like me” does play a part into it (I’m not that oblivious lmao), but I think there’s a little more there
SAO can be described as a story about a bunch of mentally ill, ostracized teens and young adults, some of whom suffered intense bullying, familial abuse or neglect, finding comfort in each other — a comfort that, in part, comes from being the only ones who can understand their situations. And they only get to meet those peers with similar experiences due to the internet! The show doesn’t always focus on this communal aspect, but it’s there! And I’m not trying to say, by any chance, that this is an exclusively LGBT experience, but I’d argue that is a relatable narrative for a lot of modern LGBT people, at least
Tumblr media
Both as someone who went through similar experiences, knows other people who have, and also studies minority mental health, it’s pretty easy to see how such a narrative could speak to LGBT youth. Hell, I made the SAO confessions blog back when I thought I was a straight, cis and a guy, and I turned out to be none of those things! I guess the idea of those characters also growing into discovering themselves in similar ways and finding community, at least to me, sounds incredibly appealing, ties in to some of the show’s themes (such as isolation, transhumanism and meeting expectations [all other things I’d love to ramble about lol]) and would make more sense in explaining some of their dynamics. Listen, I’m just saying compulsive heterosexuality answers a lot about how the girls interact with Kirito if you ask me but I DIGRESS
The books even dips their toes into some more direct queer themes? Like, there’s an actual line that by itself fuels the Aroace Sinon headcanon, and while not the most positive examples of representation, Dakira from Alicization and Pitohui from Gun Gale Online are like, explicitly WLW
Of course this is an incredibly personal and biased opinion but SAO feels like a more cohesive, relatable story to me when you look at those characters while keeping in mind that, hey, maybe they’re gay and/or trans and/or poly and you just allow yourself to be like. yeah why the hell not

Pride Week Day 1 - Real World VS Virtual World (Lisbeth x Leafa)
My piece for Pride Week Day 1! It’s not the best, and there’s a million things I’d change. I totally forgot to write anything (oops...) but I’m starting on tomorrow’s prompt now so hopefully it’s better! ♥ - Lizzy
The real world and the virtual world; the two realities that they knew better than to mix. They’d hide behind avatars, mask their feelings and lock their hearts in their little golden prison cells. The feelings weren’t real if the world wasn’t - right?
So they’d hidden away in that virtual world, where the days passed by in a blur of adventuring, laughter and falling in love. Being themselves in the only world the felt free to do so. The only world where they wouldn’t worry about consequences, or scandals, judgement or rejection.
They’d spent the morning doing their mundane activities in the real world such as chores and homework from the week, but once afternoon rolled around they’d excitedly rushed to their bedrooms and logged into ALfheim Online.
Suguha felt the familiar feeling of switching realities before she opened her eyes in the back of Lisbeth’s blacksmith shop. She’d logged out there with the hopes of surprising Lis the next time she logged on. Of course, Lisbeth was already online, busily working on a new sword for who Leafa could only assume was her brother. Slowly, she walked up behind the pink haired girl, wrapping her arms around her lovingly.
“Miss me?” She asked sweetly, stepping back so Lisbeth could turn and see her properly. She first noted the anxious look on the smith’s face, then her slightly shaking hands. Immediately Leafa panicked, her emerald eyes filled with concern. “What’s wrong? Did something happen? Did someone hurt-”
“What are we?” Lis interrupted her. Her face fell and she looked down to the floor. The silence was laced with tension, questions, and expectations, though neither girl quite knew what those expectations may have been. Lis took a shaky breath before continuing.
“In the real world,” she clarified, “what are we? Because I have feelings for you, strong ones,” she hesitated, “and I want to know if those feelings should only exist here,”
Leafa stepped back, leaning against the wall as she thought, arms crossed with one finger tapping her chin thoughtfully. What were they? In ALfheim, they were lovers. They hadn’t felt a need to label anything, or at least Leafa didn’t. But Lis had a point, the feelings they shared in-game were started to trickle into the real world. It was getting harder to hide, and it was a stress Leafa was uncomfortable thinking of. What would her family think? What would her brother think? Would he still accept her? She couldn’t bear the thought of him pushing her away when they’d just began to get close again.
“I… don’t know,” she sighed, “I want to be with you, it’s just…” she thought for a moment, carefully considering her words, “it’s difficult. I want us to be together, I want us to be able to walk down the street holding hands like we do here, but in the real world, there’s no guarantee of that,”
Lis nodded her sadly, taking a step forward to lean against the wall next to Leafa. They both knew it, the real world was harder, more difficult. The real world had people who judged you, rejected you. Were they willing to take that risk?
They held each other, Lisbeth running her fingers through Leafa’s long blonde hair. That was something else different here. Here, they weren’t Rika and Suguha, those two girls people were slightly intimidated by, the ones that were friends with Kazuto. Here they were Lisbeth and Leafa, two incredibly powerful warriors in their own right, the ones who didn’t care about what people thought of them.
“Maybe,” Leafa began, clearing her throat, “we could start small. You know, tell one or two people and see how they react. Because I want to be able to do this in the real world, too. I want to be able to hold you like this in the real world, I want to hold your hand and scream it from the rooftops that I’m dating you-” She froze, not realising how the words slipped out of her mouth until it was too late.
“Dating?” Lisbeth asked, smirking. Leafa blushed, which only make Lisbeth more playful, “My my, Princess!” She gasped, pulling away from her, “Whatever have I done to deserve such a beauty requesting my hand?” She knelt down, kissing Leafa’s hand before looking back up at her, grinning.
“Meet me at my place at five, okay?” Leafa softly kissed the top of Lisbeth’s head before logging out. While Lisbeth had been busy being embarrassing, she’d been coming up with a plan to carry their relationship into the real world, just like her brother had done with Asuna.
A few hours later Suguha was in her room, changing into a nice dress and talking herself through everything she wanted to say. Her thoughts and nervous pacing were interrupted by a knock at the door. She took a deep breath before hurrying to answer it. As expected, Rika was standing there, just as nervous as Suguha was. Suguha pulled her into a loving hug, squeezing her tighter than probably necessary, moving her mouth to Rika’s ear.
“Ready?” She whispered. Rika nodded her head and pulled away, linking arms with Sugu as they walked inside. Suguha could hear her heart beating loudly, and the few steps from the front door to where her brother was lying on the couch felt like the longest walk of her life.
Finally, the pair reached the couch, and Kazuto looked up from his phone to smile at them. He opened his mouth to greet Rika when he noticed their hands. At some point during their short walk, Rika had moved her arm and instead tightly held Suguha’s hand, their fingers intertwined in a way that was more than Kazuto thought normal.
“We have an announcement…” Suguha trailed off nervously, looking her brother in the eye. He sat his phone on the coffee table, sitting upright.
“Proceed,” he said suspiciously. The girls locked eyes for a moment and Suguha squeezed Rika’s hand protectively.
“Rika and I,” she looked up at Kazuto again, voice shaking, “are dating. It’s been happening for a while, I started spending more time with her in ALO and then the feelings kinda… didn’t go away…”
The room was silent for a few moments until it was eventually broken by Kazuto’s laughter.
“You think we didn’t know?” He asked, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye,” You’ve been staring at each other constantly, holding hands, and, and, and-” he stood up and placed his hands on his sister’s shoulders, “- I’ve been through this before, remember?”
Suguha let go of Rika’s hand, instead, wrapping her arms around her brother. Kazuto hugged her back, resting his chin on her head while she held him tightly.
“And Rika?” He eyed the girl suspiciously, “if you break her heart I break every sword in your shop,”
-----
Hi! Lizzy here! This is… yeah. I completely forgot to write anything, so this is all I have for today. It’s not great, but it’s something at least. Slightly inspired by my own coming-out story with my own brother. Anyway, if you made it this far - hi! I appreciate it! Go check out what others did for this prompt because I’m sure they’re all a lot better than my rushed little piece. Love you! ♥

Title: First Shot Pairing: Sinon/Asuna\Kirito Fandom: Sword Art Online Word Count: 1,123 Summary: Sinon wonders why Asuna chose that place as a first date. Notes: Made for SAO Pride Week 2019 - Day 3: First ___. I went with First Date. I knew I wanted to do at least one poly piece for this week, and Kirisunanon seemed the most fun. Thanks to @thegayfromrulid for beta reading.

I must have something for dark and broody, Asuna thinks, watching as her dates bicker. Dates. She’s besides herself at how she’s been given the privilege of plural.
Asuna doesn’t mind holding hands with the both of them, even as a part of Sinon still says don’t let her touch you, you’re a murderer. Asuna’s hands, however, warm and pristine, don’t seem to mind handling the weight of ichor the other two’s hands carry, as she interlinks her fingers with theirs and sways them gently, proudly and guiltlessly.
Yet, again, she can’t help noticing while projecting their real world figures in her mind, that she clearly has somewhat of a type – their heads of hair charcoal and jet-black, eyes obsidian and onyx, and perhaps a bit tired, even if one bespectacled and the other not.
… Would Kirito look good in glasses?
Given a few swings of swaying, Sinon unlinks their fingers. Asuna checks and knows she is fine from the upkeep of Sinon’s smile, genuine and warm (well, by Sinon Standards).
Asuna always found Kirito’s affection had somewhat of a feline nature – an intense attachment covered in occasional aloof distance, and then she started dating Sinon as well. If Kirito was a domestic cat, close at a safe distance, then Sinon was a stray going through rehabilitation, slow to approach and quick to dart away, but with a clear want for warmth.
She saw no problem in providing it, as needed.
“Asuna, can I ask you a question?”
“Yes, Sinonon?”
“Why did you pick… here, for a first date?”
**
“I like you, is what I’m saying. I have feelings for you."
Asuna confesses, voice soft, and Sinon’s everything is sent into disarray.
“You’re dating, uh, you’re dating Kazuto, right? Did you guys break up or–“
“No, no, not by any chance!” Asuna corrects her, hands flailing in front of her.
“I understand this might come as a bit sudden, Sinonon, but I’ve just… the time I've got to spend with you in the past few months was really special, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t develop feelings for you. I consider you a dear friend, so I figured being honest with my feelings would be the best choice here…”
“But Kirito–“
“Knows about it, don’t worry. He is okay with it. If you are.”
The world goes sideways, both in her vision and in her mind.
Shino Asada is, by no means, a romantic at heart. The idea of romance still puzzles her in ways she can’t quite describe, and she can’t remember crushing of any sort as a part of her childhood– breaking boys’ noses during elementary school notwithstanding. She figured it was just one of the many things girls like her, cursed and defective, didn’t have the capriciousness of considering.
She’s not sure about that, however, hearing Asuna’s words. The same girl who accepted her with open arms despite knowing of her past, who gave her the silly nickname of Sinonon, who invited her to come over for a sleepover–
Who is looking at her right now, eyes pleading and eyelashes fanning, rivers of chestnut hair falling symmetrically from her shoulders, her expression so genuine and honest…?
Perhaps that seemed like such an impossible dream she didn’t dare to dream it, because the quickening of her heartbeat and the flushing of her cheeks seem to be telling her something. Maybe, if Kirito doesn’t mind, and Asuna is so willing, then...
“… Please let me think this over.”
**
Shino stares up at her hands as she reaches towards the ceiling of her apartment, sinking softly in her mattress. These hands, once covered with the blood of someone’s expired life, are something she decided without thinking that no one should touch, as to not soil someone she holds dear. That’s never been a problem before, as she never held anyone dear, nor was held dear by anyone since the incident at the postal office.
She’s a product of a dead father, an absent mother, and distant relatives, none of whom left her with the social graces to reach out to new people.
And yet, Asuna offers affection. To her.
A killer.
Her outstretched hands dye red in her vision, splattered maroon caking pale fingers. She shuts her eyes tight and blinks roughly, repeating the motion until the scarlet clears when she opens them again.
Her breath is ragged, but she’s grateful. These tricks played by her mind would generally drag on much longer, before BoB, before meeting Kirito, and Asuna, and everyone else.
Before, when she was alone.
She’s not sure if she is worthy, or if there even is such a thing as being worthy of being by someone’s side, but she can’t bring herself to care. More precisely, she urges herself not to. She figured all this time that running from others was her being strong, when it was nothing but a result of a masked fragility.
Asuna, her best friend, beautiful and resplendent, wants to be with her, and she won’t be running away again.
**
Ever so perceptive for a teasing opportunity, Asuna feigns ignorance.
“What ever could you mean, Sinonon?”
She sets a finger to her cheek, head cocking slightly.
“… She means why you wanted a date in GGO, right?”
Kirito, either out of pity or ignorance, fills in for Sinon. She’s not sure on how to feel about this, considering their pseudo-rivalry.
“I mean, you even invited me, too. Isn’t this the sort of thing you’d do just the two of you at first?”
Asuna bumps shoulders against him, her expression a mix of amused and indignant.
“I’m surprised you of all people would stop me. But fine.”
Asuna walks ahead of them towards the entrance to the shooting range, her standard issue avatar clothing betraying her status as a new convert account.
“I felt a bit left out, being the only one out of the three of us to never have experienced this game. So,” she excitedly splays her arms to the sign, “I want you two to teach me how to shoot!”
Sinon and Kirito exchange a look.
“This really doesn’t seem like a two-person job,” Kirito points out.
Sinon points at him, smirking as she averts her gaze.
“And he can barely aim. Trust me, I’ve been on the receiving end of it.”
“What?!”
And just like that, the two start their bickering, all playful jabs and shallow cuts. There's a lot of love there too, Asuna is sure of it, judging from the way they have to keep their laughter contained as they disparage one another. Asuna watches them intently, so, so enamored, and unlike them she doesn't suppress her giggling.
And to her, this is perfect, because they’re perfect.

Happy SAO pride week!
Virtual world vs Real world Fanfiction under the cut! ^_^
Kazuto closed the door behind him and sat on his bed. His room, an androgynous grey to his design, surrounded him with comfort. He didn’t even need to look when he reached for the amusphere, which had been sitting in it’s familiar spot on his bedside table like always. Setting it on his head and closing the visor over his eyes, he closed them and welcomed the split second of darkness before he could say “Link Start!” Whenever Kazuto closed his eyes, he couldn’t help but remember the hours that came before. Usually the most interesting thing that happened at school came to mind. Other days’ topics were things like dinner. Today was different. He could feel himself wince as he reminisced on the most spotlight-worthy interaction of today.  “You look like a boy,” Mixed reactions filled his head. What would’ve been considered an insult on regular terms made him filled with joy. But what followed...
“Yeah that’s actually really weird. Why do you do that?”
He remembered the feeling of being at loss for words. He remembered being alone like always and praying that a stranger would come and interrupt the situation. It’s not that they were intentionally singling out. Or maybe they were. It was just an incredibly difficult question. Why?
Why is it such a difficult thing to do. To dress and act the way I truly am? I’d say it’s far more stranger to put on that stupid mask every day and act like I’m happy. Truthfully I can’t stand it. I don’t know how you guys can. For as long as I can remember, it’s made me feel awful. I’ve finally made the choice to act for myself. Is that so bad?
Kazuto sighed as he regretted not saying those words in that moment. If only he could’ve frozen time in that moment to give himself enough time to think about something cool like that to say.
Realizing almost 5 minutes had passed of him sitting in complete darkness making faces to himself, he said the command to boot up the amusphere.
“Link start!”
Kazuto loved the virtual world. He had since he was a kid. His virtual name, “Kirito” was the first masculine name he chose for himself, and it felt so strange, but so good. When he first put it in the system, it felt so different compared to his given name. Every time he put his given name on anything, it felt like there was a sickness ready to make his brain collapse in on itself.
This is normal, he grew up thinking.
But why does he have to settle for what he’s handed? What’s the matter about taking matters into your own hands and fixing what’s broken? Is it so “weird” to find happiness for yourself? “Kirito...?”
He looked up to see his only friends looking at him. Their vibrantly colored elven avatars crowded the living room of his virtual home.
“What’s the matter? You look upset.” Silica said to him.
“Oh, sorry. Don’t worry about it, some girls just got on my nerves today. No big deal.”
“Wow look at you, chick magnet!” Lisbeth smirked. “You must be so popular to have enough girls on you to get annoyed about it!!
“I-”
“Bad news for them! You got the best girlfriend in the world sitting right here!” she exclaimed, pointing at Asuna, sitting on the couch just a few inches away from Kazuto. She had somewhat of a worried look on her face, staring straight at him.
“Girl, you gotta be tougher on him.”
“No she doesn’t!” Kazuto managed to inerject, remembering their time in early Aincrad. Asuna may seem like too much of a sweetheart for her own good on the surface, but when it comes down to it she can, will, and has kicked Kazuto’s ass.
“You know what Kirito, I don’t blame them. You really are a cutie.” Asuna said.
“Get a room.” Sinon joked.
“Eeh...”
“I’m serious Kirito!” Asuna began to get upset. Half joking with a side of concern.
“Yeah, listen to your girlfriend, Kirito. You’re a hansome boy!” Lisbeth added. “Everyone knows this!”
“That’s not funny. I’d never compliment Kirito. It’s against my moral code. I’d compliment anyone but Kirito” Sinon joked again. Kazuto let out a quiet chuckle at her teasing.
“I don’t blame you. He looks like a boy who’s just discovered punk music and is dipping his toes in the water. Like, he’s not dedicated enough to the genre, but he wears black in appreciation.” Lisbeth began the tease session.
“That was weak. He looks like he washes his clothes in nothing but coal because he spilled the detergent and is too nervous to go out and buy a new bottle.” Sinon followed up.
“Oh, oh!” Silica chimed in, “Kirito looks like a wannabe manga protagonist!”
“Please. He IS a wannabe manga protagonist”
The room erupted in laughter, but nobody was wheezing nearly as hard as Kazuto. He was nearly tearing up.
“Stop it you guys!”
He was grinning ear to ear, and his face red from laughing. As his laughing fit calmed slightly down, Asuna leaned over and looked him straight in the face. She had that terrifying, dead serious, determined look on her face that she made all the time in Aincrad.
“If people are giving you trouble, you tell them that your incredibly powerful girlfriend is on her way to get them with her intense gaming skills.”
The room interrupted in laughter yet again.
“I love you guys.” Kirito said when the laughter died down. “I’ve never met any of you in real life, but I want this to be my world so bad. Is that weird of me?”
“We spent two years in Aincrad. Those were undoubtly the best years of my life, because I could spend them with you guys. If i could be completely honest, I want more than anything to drop my real life and live in this world forever.”
Silica, Sinon, Lisbeth, and especially Asuna were listening attentively.
With this confession, Asuna knew just the slightest bit more about Kirito’s life in the real world. That it wasn’t as fortunate as hers. Although it made her feel slightly bad, she became determined to help and support Kirito even more.
“Kirito,”
“Hm?”
“Let’s meet up in real life.”
Sinon, Lisbeth, and Silica lit up in unison. The three were now excited to hear more about this plan.
“We can save up money and the whole gang can vacation to some place fun together!” Asuna said.
“Maybe a weekend in the summer somewhere? We could go some place like Osaka!” Silica added.
“Oh my gosh, yes! And maybe-” Lisbeth was suddenly interrupted by a saddened Kirito.
“I’m sorry. I don’t think I can...”
Kazuto truly wanted to be able to meet his only friends in the real world. You could see it on his face. But he was being held back by something.
“If you aren’t comfortable with it it’s totally fine, we don’t have to go this summer!” Asuna reassured. “Is everything okay?”
“Don’t worry about me. It’s getting late where I live. I should go to bed.” Kazuto said depressingly.
Everyone worriedly wished him goodnight and watched his avatar dissolve out of their virtual world.
“I really do hope everything is okay,” Asuna started. “I don’t want to pressure him to open up when he isn’t comfortable with it. I just want to be able to be there for him. I wish I could just teleport to his home in the real world and tell him everything is alright. Whatever he’s going through, I don’t want him to be alone in it.”
Kazuto removed the amusphere and looked out at the dusk sky. With the rollercoaster of emotions that today was, he was exhausted. Or at least that’s what he told himself.
He let down his ponytail and hid under his covers, wishing he could just skip trying to fall asleep and teleport to the next morning. Kazuto dreaded the thoughts that would flood his mind while he would try to fall asleep.
Closing his eyes harder didn’t prevent the floodgates from opening as he hoped.
In his time in aincrad, Kazuto was himself. He was Kirito. Although the Black Swordsman identity wasn’t exactly his cup of tea, he rest assured knowing that at least everyone saw him as he truly was. Male.
Kazuto remembered the moment Kayaba switched everyone’s avatars to represent their real selves. His stomach dropped as he saw his hair flow down his shoulders. As soon as the spectacle was over, he ran into an allyway, took his beginner sword, and sliced the length clean off. In that moment, he felt the literal and metaphorical weight off his shoulders. It wasn’t the best cut, but it got the job done. The rage and anger of the unfairness of it all manifested in that one cut. If only he could do that in the real world.
That’s when Klein found him, and where he left him. Part of the reason he left was so he wouldn’t feel guilty about lying to him, and he knew that. But what was he lying about?
Had he been lying to Asuna for those two years? Building their relationship off of a lie? Kazuto tried to stop the thought train from going to the place he dreaded, but it kept on rolling.
What if I told her and she hated me?
I wouldn’t blame her.
No. He has been living the truth. It just wasn’t the truth that reality wanted him to live. But it was the truth that he was. If Asuna hated him forever, then they weren’t meant to be.
But then two years wouldn’t have been wasted. If you told her in the beginning and she hated you, you wouldnt waste two years with her.
Tears started to manifest in his eyes, one slipping away into his long, tangled hair. What an awful way to think of his girlfriend. What an awful reality. He wished for nothing but to slip back away into the virtual world in that moment, just to be able to distract himself from this torture. But he had already told his friends he was going to bed. He would be caught with another lie on his hands.
Why not bring the virtual world to here?
Something, some force, made Kazuto shoot up out of bed. He wiped his wet eyes on his blanket and stormed to the bathroom. His footsteps echoed through the empty house. His sister and only other person in the house, was gone on a kendo trip. But even if she was home, nothing could stop his forward force. Nothing could stop his mysterious determination.
No. It’s not mysterious or weird. It’s what has to be done. It’s what has had to be done for a long time.
He opened his sister’s drawer and located the scissors, and grabbed the length of his hair with reddened knuckles and a furious grasp. Just like that, years worth of agony were draped on the bathroom floor. He swing his new, light head to the left and to the right. Not an unfamiliar feeling thanks to the likes of full dive, but surely it was different. It was new and refreshing, and it felt beautiful. Kazuto looked straight back at himself in the mirror and for the first time in what’s felt like a lifetime, he smiled. And with that, uncontrollable tears came flooding down his face.
This wasn’t the same crying that he’d been doing for years. This was liberation. He swept his own hands through his new look, and grinned ear to ear through his swollen, tear-stained face, and proceeded to make his way back to his room. With the weight of what felt like the world off his shoulders, Kazuto proceeded to sink into the most comfortable rest with a genuine smile on his face.

Pride Week Day 7- AU (Eugeo x Kirito + Fairy Tail)
A Fairy Tail AU because they’re basically all the same characters. Also… y’know.. Redhead swordswoman named Titania… SO Kirito takes Natsu’s role, Eugeo takes Lucy’s role, Asuna takes Erza’s role, Alice takes Gray’s role (oof) annnd Yui takes Happy’s role (in her pixie form). This is the first AU I’ve ever written ever so it isn’t that great. Hope you enjoy it anyway!
Eugeo leant against the wall of the Guildhall, looking around at his guildmates. As usual, they were causing a scene. There were no less than three separate fights happening, half the guildhall was frozen and Lisbeth, Klein and Agil were swiftly making their way through the guild’s alcohol supply.
He sighed and walked to the door, checking outside for Kirito. They’d promised to go on a mission together that day, but he hadn’t shown up yet. As he walked back inside, Eugeo looked at Yui, who was flying across the guildhall, narrowly avoiding being hit by a flying chair.
“Eugeo!” Kirito burst through the door, jumping behind Eugeo’s back to hide. “No time to explain, but can we leave? Right now?”
Eugeo didn’t have time to respond before the doors flew open again, Asuna walking into the guild hall with her sword drawn. She walked straight to the boys, gripping Kirito’s shoulder and dragging him away from Eugeo.
“How many times,” she began, glaring at him, “do you have to be reminded to not burn down half the city?”
“But Alice wanted to fight.. I don’t see how I didn’t anything wrong here,” Kirito defended himself, crossing his arms over his chest. The ice mage in question stormed into the guild hall and pinned Kirito against a wall.
“You went overboard again!”
“Put some damn clothes on!”
The argument escalated until the entire guild was staring at them. The other fights had died down to instead listen to the great Titania Asuna lecturing Kirito for yet another failed mission, and another bill for damage repairs.
Eventually, Asuna grew tired of lecturing Kirito, she knew that he wouldn’t listen, and instead decided to look at the jobs board to make up for the damages Kirito had done to the town in his latest shenanigans.
Once she’d walked away, Eugeo immediately grabbed Kirito’s hand and dragged him out of the guildhall, muttering about how he’d made them late, again. He had a bad habit of doing that, but Eugeo couldn’t stay mad for too long.
Yui flew after them, catching up to them and landing on Kirito’s shoulder. While they walked, Eugeo filled Kirito in on the details of the quest. It was a simple one, all they had to do was watch over a carriage to make sure that nothing was stolen overnight. Something Kirito would hopefully be able to do with too much damage.
Once they got to the location on the flyer they easily located the carriage they were meant to watch. They sat down on the ground beside it, keeping a sharp eye out for bandits that may have been following them.
“So, what are we gonna do until morning?” Kirito asked, leaning against the carriage and sighing. Eugeo thought for a moment before rummaging through the pouch he kept at his hip. He pulled out a shiny silver gate key, grinning.
“Open, gate of the little dog!”
With that, Plue appeared in Eugeo’s lap. The celestial mage lovingly cuddled into his pet, while Kirito pouted next to him.
“Not fair,” the dragon slayer mumbled, crossing his arms over his chest cutely. Eugeo rolled his eyes, hugging Plue to his chest as Yui cuddled into Kirito’s cheek.
“At least someone pays attention to me,” Kirito sighed dramatically. Eugeo elbowed him in the side.
After a few hours of talking, Eugeo began to fall asleep. Kirito cuddled up to him, lighting a small flame in his palm to provide a little light and warmth. Yui and Plue cuddled in Eugeo’s lap, with the blond-haired boy affectionately stroking their heads as he fell into a deep sleep.
Kirito softly kissed Eugeo’s cheek, wrapped an arm around him and smiled.
“Night, Eugeo,” he whispered. Eugeo simply smiled and relaxed into Kirito’s embrace. The fire mage shook his hand lightly, the flame disappearing as he wrapped another arm around his friend. They wouldn’t need it, they had something else much better to keep them warm…

Title: Next Time Pairing: Silica/Sinon Fandom: Sword Art Online Word Count: 2,431 Summary: Shino visits Keiko in a snowy day. One of them has to open up so the other can, too. Notes: Made for SAO Pride Week - Day 2: Trust. I’m a bit late in posting this due to a power outtage in my neighborhood. Thanks to @thegayfromrulid for beta reading.

It was snowing outside.
Keiko patted inside the tall kitchen cabinet and her fingertips gathered dust brushing against the wooden cover. Feeling the cold metal surface of the can she looked for, she grabbed it and closed the door. Following into the next room, she was greeted by a small, fluffy creature that rubbed itself against her legs and purred softly.
“Are you really being affectionate or is it just the food?” She asked her cat and almost expected an answer.
She unsealed the can with the jagged opener, sneering at the unpleasant smell oozing from the container. She dumped the wet contents on the tiny bowl that read “Pina”. The feline’s ears bristled upwards as it gracefully walked to the pot, stuffing its face with the kind of gross-looking food.
There’s my answer, she thought.
Crouching, she caressed her pet’s head, a sigh of defeat escaping her mouth.
“You really are the worst kitty ever, you know?”
The cat continued to munch on the contents of the bowl, unfazed by her accusations. Stepping into the next room and slouching on the sofa in the living room, she stared at the ceiling for a while.
A few hours earlier, her parents had once again invited her to a family gathering, and once again, she’d refused.
She hated seeing her family. They asked too many questions about her time in the floating castle, too many inquiries of years she’d rather forget. She loathed seeing her relatives and the judging stares that they directed at her, and no amount of scolding about “her growing reputation as a shut-in” could change that or convince her to go.
Unsavory thoughts of her time in Aincrad swirled in her mind, but she quickly swatted them away. Letting those feelings fester for too long tended to give her headaches, and that wasn’t the time for–
The doorbell rang.
Her heart skipped a beat. She knew who stood behind the door – they were expected, after all, and there weren’t many people who would visit her dormitory, especially at this hour.
She walked to the door, somewhat anxious. Looking through the peephole, she saw the distorted image of a girl, her black hair tied with white ribbons on both sides of her face. The girl behind the door rubbed her palms together, hands bumping into her half-rimmed glasses as white smoke released from her mouth. The harsh December winter bit into her, leggings and coats and all, and it didn’t seem like the snowfall outside would stop any time soon.
Keiko opened the door, the cold wind sending the hairs of her nape on end. Some warmth from the house’s heater escaped through the entrance. Keiko, whose pigtails were so customary both in the real and in the virtual world they could as well be her trademark, wore her hair down, which gave her a slightly more mature air than her usual juvenile looks. The one-size-too-large sweater featuring a cartoonish goldfish over her chest seemed to act as a proper counterweight to that, though.
She couldn’t help but notice how comically burly Shino looked in her three-- four? layers of clothing. Her wool muffler hid the lower half of her face and she looked like a human spring roll.
Waving a hand, the visitor greeted: “Hello, Silica.”
“Come on in, Sinon,” the shorter girl replied with a smile, and Shino obliged.
The two picked up the nasty habit of calling each other by their avatar names in real life, but at that point, they just couldn’t help it. Their time together in the virtual world made these sound much more natural to say out loud.
Closing the door after entering the house, Shino untied the muffler around her neck and placed it on the makeshift hanger by the entrance, along with her coat. Keiko went ahead to the kitchen to start heating the tea. Taking off her boots before stepping into the hallway, a noise similar to a softly revving engine distracted the bespectacled girl.
As she saw Keiko awkwardly shooing the cat away from the kitchen, she realized the source of the noise.
“Oh.”
Slowly and warily, the furry source made its way to her.
Shino stood still, watching as the cat circled around her once, then brushed its white fur against her black leggings the second time around. She felt a mix of confusion and joy from the unexpected greeter.
**
Shino’s call earlier was a bit sudden.
“Is it okay if I visit you today?”
That was her simple request upon calling. Keiko had invited her to her house once before, and had no reason to decline, but she couldn’t help but notice something off about Shino’s voice; her tired tone, the light rasping, the subtle panic embedded into it.
“Are you alright?” she’d asked.
A weak “yeah” succeeding a short pause was all Shino said. Keiko didn’t push her.
Shino often felt a bit distant, like she’d prefer biting her own tongue off to opening up. A past of hurt had forced her to build walls around herself. Keiko didn’t know how to convey that desire, or even if it was her place to do so…
But she wanted to tear those walls down.
**
“Sorry for the wait,” Keiko said, entering the room.
She quickly directed her gaze down to the creature resting on Shino’s lap.
“It’s okay,” Shino deadpanned, pointing at Pina. “This little guy kept me company.”
Keiko wasn’t able to hold back the sheepish chuckles that escaped her mouth. Shino squinted at the sudden laughter.
“Sorry, sorry,” Keiko replied, shaking her head side to side. “You just said that so seriously!”
Shino scratched her cheek at the odd explanation, the hint of a smile making a way to her lips.
“I’m surprised, too. He generally doesn’t just approach people like that.”
As if on cue, the cat ran away from Shino’s leg pillow, darting back to the kitchen. At that, Keiko again seemed oddly amused, trying to hold back her joy at that simple event.
It wasn’t uncommon for Keiko to laugh at seemingly trivial matters, and albeit she’d never admit, the dark-haired girl found joy in being accidentally amusing in this way. She never found humor to be her forte. Keiko’s promptness for laughter seemed twofold whenever Shino was around – not that the girl knew that, obviously. She just assumed that was part of Keiko’s constantly cheery personality.
Finally setting the tray on the kotatsu, Keiko sat beside Shino, a tinge of nervousness prickling them both as she did so.
The guest took hold of the cup before her, warm ceramic heating cold hands, the lemony smell of honey revitalizing her body. She raised the drink to take a sip, feeling as the hot drink soothed her light shivering and a familiar taste stuck to her tongue.
The cup made a dull sound as it was gently set on the table, a tense silence filling the room for several seconds. Keiko was the one to break it.
“So, is everything okay with you? Anything you wanted to talk about?”
Shino averted her gaze down to her cup, inviting silence once more. She swirled the contents of her mug, avoiding eye contact as she thought on how to answer.
“Nothing in particular. You mentioned I should come visit a couple of weeks ago, and today just happened to be a good day for me. You said something about a movie last time I was here?”
“Ah, I see! That uh, that makes sense.”
Her voice seemed clearer than during her call, but something still seemed off. Failing at getting a read on her again, Keiko pursed her lips.
Maybe this is none of her business. Maybe she should just watch a movie with her friend, and stop being so nosy…
Unsure or whether or not to push further, she took the laptop by the side of the table and opened it, both of them staring at the screen as Keiko tried to remember the name of a movie she mentioned in passing weeks ago.
It might be how long it’s been, or that she only brought it up because she wanted to watch it with the girl next to her, or, perhaps more likely, how worried she is about her friend right now, but she struggles with the name.
Catching a whiff of the scent of the tea again, she remembers – both the name of the movie and something else.
“You know,” Keiko started as she began her typing, “I have trouble sleeping sometimes. Nightmares.”
Shino turned back to her, shoulders instinctively tensing upon seeing Keiko’s melancholic smile.
“Ever since I had to leave home and come to Tokyo, well, I was– am, a bit scared. I barely left the house back then, and then the SAO incident happened, and then, just when I thought things would be normal again… The only school that would accept me was hours from home, and I had to move here by myself, away from my family, and they blame me for it, somehow.”
She said that with a cheery expression, along with a cracked voice that unmasked her grief.
Keiko knows this is a bit sudden, and maybe somewhat awkward, but she doesn’t know how else to get through to her.
Shino stared at her speechless for a second before nodding, prompting her to continue.
"And so every night since, I feel this… guilt that makes me want to hurl,” she continued, clasping her hands in a cute, unfitting way.
Shino felt an urge to reach out to the girl next to her to comfort her, but something inside herself stopped her, wouldn’t let her. She simply clenched her fists.
“But,“ Keiko continued, “you told me about this blend of tea, a couple of months ago, I think? And I know this is silly, but ever since I started trying it a while before bed it’s been better.”
Shino wore a puzzled expression hearing this. Keiko continued, a bit fidgety.
“Uh, well, not a lot better? Just not as bad! I mean, it’s just tea. And I mean, I know this is silly,” she stammered, “but I guess it helped. Tea sounds like one of those silly things people who don’t really… get it recommend, but there was something about it, small as it was, that helped me shuffle a little less in my sleep. So,” she sounded a bit embarrassed saying the last part, “it’s like you helped me, in a way.”
Keiko put her hand over Shino’s, amber eyes uncharacteristically piercing as she stared the sniper down, a firm, reassuring squeeze draped over Shino’s knuckles.
“Now, I get the feeling you asked to come here for a reason. Because you had something troubling you.”
A short silence followed, and Shino just stared, perhaps a little more stoic than intended.
“… And I guess, I want to help you, too?”
She thought it was a bit embarrassing making her comfort pitch following a talk about the magical wonders of tea for anxiety, but at the same time she couldn't think of anything better to say. She just figured opening up first would be the best route there.
Keiko started fumbling, scratching her neck awkwardly.
"W-well, not that it’s uh, my place to say any of that, or like you have to talk to me about anything! I’m just rambling here, really! Haha!”
Shino laughed sheepishly as Keiko’s ears turn pink through her clarification, and a small “it’s fine, it’s fine,” is all she said before going back to silence. Given a moment, she grasped Keiko’s hand in return, her calm voice breaking the silence.
“I get nightmares too,” she confessed. “And, honestly, I’m afraid of being alone with my thoughts for too long, being all by myself in my apartment.” She fiddled with her fingers a bit, as if to focus on something keep herself talking.
“I guess I just wanted to hear someone’s voice. Be with someone for a while. You were one of the first people who came to mind, really.”
Sinon thought back to a few months ago – before BoB, before meeting Kirito, before meeting Silica and his other friends, and she can’t imagine herself being so frank to someone like this. The fog in her mind that tried to close others off seemed thinner. Easier to navigate through, if only slightly.
Keiko wasn't quite sure how to react at first. She just squeezed the other girl’s hand tighter; to remind her that she’s there. She’s a little surprised Shino puts enough trust in her to tell her this – honored, in a way. She felt a prickling in her eyes that threatened to turn into tears, but she knew that wasn’t the time.
“I’m, I’m glad, that I can be a person like that for you. I understand how it can be, to feel like you can’t talk about these thoughts with anyone, but…”
She moves her face closer to Shino’s.
“… You don’t have to, you know. If you’re okay with me.”
Keiko took note of how smitten Shino’s gaze looked at her, and finally noticed their faces were almost touching. Both girls’ cheeks tinted with a faint red at that moment, hearts skipping the same beat.
Shino quickly averted her gaze from Keiko’s, who in turn chuckled at the display of bashfulness that seemed more and more common for the girl she once perceived as a cold markswoman.
A wandering hand reached out from behind Shino’s neck to her shoulder, gently pulling her closer to the girl sitting next to her. The warmth brought her a sense of tranquility.
“You don’t have to be so shy about those things next time, you know,” Keiko’s soft voice explained.
“I’ll keep that in mind… next time,” Shino replied warmly, the last part uttered with a certain longing to it. She playfully bumped her shoulder against Keiko’s.
Shino leaned in closer and laid her head against Keiko’s shoulder, making herself comfortable as they finally started the movie waiting on the nearby laptop’s screen.
They didn’t know how much time they had to be like that, hands interwoven under the heated table, cozily leaning onto each other. They did know that then, however, nothing could touch them – the swirling white cold dancing through the biting winter winds outside, the expectations of judging relatives, the foreboding loneliness of an empty apartment. That small dormitory, with its small laptop, was their bunker, offering them the chance to be together.
When they were together. Those were the moments they could allow their worries to melt away like driven snow.

Confession (Lisbeth x Sinon)
Lisbeth is haunted by her darkest memory from Aincrad, but she learns she might not have to face it alone.
A blade to his throat, a thin crimson damage line spreading across it. The man’s ugly mouth curling into a sinister sneer. The toe of his boot slamming against a pile of equipment on the ground.
“Beg me for his life, girl. Perhaps I’ll spare this one.”
“Run…”
A knife plunges.
A mace swings down.
The dagger clatters to the ground, nothing else left save two clouds of debris winking out of existence.
A green cursor turns red, blood dripping down from it onto her hands, staining her pristine white gloves.
As she falls to her knees, the spectral form of the man appears behind her, the grin even larger than before. He leans in and whispers a single word in her ear.
“Murderer…”
-===-
“Lisbeth! Are you okay?”
The young blacksmith bolted upright just before the door flew open, and she hugged the bedsheets to her chest. Her heart pounded as she stared at the slim figure silhouetted in the open doorway, clearly not either of her parents. It took her a moment to realize that she wasn’t in her bedroom, indeed not even in her real body. The pieces started to fit together. She was on the twenty-second floor of New Aincrad, in the forest home owned by her best friend.
A home that Asuna assured her would be empty.
Yet there stood the Cait Sith. Liz half expected her to have both arms folder over her chest as she leaned against the door frame. However, she stood frozen, her face a mask of concern. Despite the look, Lisbeth could only respond to her presence with a single question.
“What are you doing here?”
“You screamed,” Sinon said. “I had the crazy idea I should check on you.”
“No, I mean what are you doing in the house? Asuna told me it was going to be empty for the next few hours.”
“I dropped off some gear in one of the storage chests and needed to pick it up.” Sinon moved closer to the bed. “I know this place is cozy, but isn’t your real bed more comfortable?”
In the real world, her nightmares were accompanied by cold sweat, her cries waking up her family and causing them to fret even more than usual. It meant another visit with the school therapist, another round of prying questions that she refused to answer. They knew what she had done, of course. The ministry recovered enough data to see to that. But she’d never spoken it aloud, even during bad patches where the nightmares came nightly.
At least if she slept in full dive, she could avoid at least some of that.
“I just felt like sleeping in game. I did it for over two years, after all.”
“Asuna told me the other day that you were practically falling asleep in class. Have you been having trouble sleeping?”
“Maybe.”
“I’ll take that as a yes.” She moved closer to the bed. “Whatever you’re going through, it would be easier if you talked to someone about it. Asuna thinks the world of you, I know she’d be willing to listen.”
Lisbeth winced. “That’s just it. I don’t want that to change.”
Sinon smirked in reply. “If she can put up with everything Kirito has done, I doubt there’s anything you could do to push her away.”
Rather than laugh, Lisbeth shrank away. “Don’t be so sure.”
The smile vanished from the Cait Sith’s face and she sat down on the edge of the bed. “Liz, I haven’t known you as long as the others, but if there’s something bothering you… I’d like to help.”
Slowly, Lisbeth turned to the other side of the bed, away from Sinon. “Do you promise this would stay between us?”
“Of course.”
For a long while, Lisbeth remained silent. When she spoke again, her voice was weak.
“When I first signed into Sword Art Online, I was terrified. I’d never played a game like that before, and I thought for certain I’d die. In the middle of that panic, three warriors walked over. Their names were Hogun, Fandral and Volstagg, after characters from their favorite movie. They volunteered to help me and keep me alive. They encouraged me to become a blacksmith, and I always kept a picture of us together. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them. But I’ve never told Asuna, Kirito or anyone else about them.”
“Why not?”
“Because… they died. And they died because of me.”
“What do you mean?”
“Even after I started my smith shop, they still came by and helped out. After a while, I started making really good money. My reputation got bigger and bigger. I guess it caught the attention of the wrong people in the game.”
She paused, the words coming out harder now.
“One day, a man named Rugen showed up. Said I worked for him now, and that all the profits of my shop were his. If I challenged him on it, he’d kill me the first chance he got.” She started to shake as tears ran down her cheeks. “I… I told Hogun and the rest about it. They decided they were going to talk with Rugen. They were gone for two days… then I got a message from Rugen. Told me to meet him in one of the dungeons if I ever wanted to see them again.
“But… by the time I got there… only Hogun was left. I… should have done something more. But I… I… I didn’t know what to do. I just attacked without thinking. I wasn’t fast enough…”
She trailed off, unable to finish. She let the tears flow for a time, then took in a deep breath and continued.
“It took a week for my cursor to go green again. I hid in my smith shop the entire time. It wasn’t long after that I ran into Asuna again. I could never tell her what I’d done. If she knew the truth…”
She pulled the covers tight around herself, giving in to the tears. She expected Sinon to storm out of the room, to reject her for being too weak to save her friends, and for killing another player. The bed shifted and Lisbeth shut her eyes tight.
Then she felt Sinon behind her, one arm pulling her into a gentle hug.
“Tell her when you’re ready,” she whispered. “But don’t feel guilty for what you were forced to do. I know it hurts, but I’m certain you saved people’s lives. You didn’t have any other choice.”
“You really think so?”
“I do now. Some day, I’ll tell you why. But for now, I’m worried about you.”
Lisbeth felt a warmth in her cheeks. “O-okay. But I thought you had something else to do?”
“It can wait, if you need someone to be here with you.”
“M-maybe just for a little while.”
“As long as you need.”
Before long, however, Lisbeth drifted off to sleep with Sinon’s arm draped over her.
There were no nightmares.
-===-
Several hours later, Lisbeth awoke to find Sinon still behind her, asleep as well. She shook her gently, and soon the Cait Sith looked up at her with sleepy eyes.
“Oh. I must’ve dozed off too.”
“Guess you got comfortable, huh?”
Sinon’s ears shot straight up, her cheeks burning crimson. “Um, y-yeah. I guess so.”
The two sat up in the bed, looking at each other in awkward silence a moment.
“Thank you,” Lisbeth finally said. “For listening, and for staying with me.”
“As long as it helped.”
“It did.” Lisbeth’s lips curled into a smirk. “By the way, since you were kind enough to stay with me, would you mind if I told you something else that needs to stay between the two of us?”
Sinon blinked. “What is it?”
The answer came in the form of a kiss to Sinon’s cheek.
“Your in-game avatar’s almost as cute as you are in real life.”
Author’s Note - Forgive any typos, as I was really struggling with this prompt and didn’t want to do nothing but YuuAsu for the challenge. This is a pure first draft story, so I might come back to it as I like the concept if the execution isn’t quite there yet. I’ve always been curious who the three people we see in the photo with Lisbeth are, and I thought it might make for some interesting backstory.
Hopefully I wasn’t too terrible for my first time writing in Sinon’s voice, and maybe I can clean this up for posting on AO3 at some point!

Day 3: First Day On The Beach
Keep your hands dudes. Those beauties are wonderful lesbians! I think it’s funny how most of them are doing cliche tropes like kiss or date while me just took the girls in bikinis cause I want summer now.
SAO MD has good designs just saying.

I tried to draw a scene for once and good grief I don’t know how depth works. (I jab, knowing I wear damn trifocals and can’t actually judge depth with my own two eyes).
This goes with my Day 7 one-shot, Meteor Shower. Kirito please don’t fall.
