Hello Mod! :D question for you. Is bluesky worth it/any good?? I’ve been debating on moving over there from the uh, bird site and I wanted to get another opinion before i did so.
it's basically the dead bird site minus the dead brain that owns it now, it's been very chill but with open access we now have to be more wary of less cool dudes appearing, but yeah! works the same as the other place and more and more people are appearing there so it's picking up steam

August Update - Recent News & Game Announcement
Summer is coming to a close! It’s hard to believe that we’re two-thirds of the way through the year. Let’s take a look back on what’s been going on recently and what my plans are for the near future:
Recent releases

releases
We had two releases in the last two months: a demo and a Steam release.
Consummation ~wind above the dragon sea~ (demo)
Tumblr media
This is an island spared by the heavens, a cage for the remnants of humanity. A freelancer blessed by the wind receives a strange letter, leading her to a promised place of her youth. In that same district-city, the four great families chosen by the four great gods gather for their biennial conference. As the paths of those hated and loved by the gods cross, a darkness beneath the sea stirs—to devour, to drown, to destroy, to choose.
Lachesis or Atropos (Steam Edition)
youtube
A private investigator visits a small town after recovering from a coma. She searches for her mentor's lost beloved, but the very eyes she was born with, those that can see the black strings of hate, drag her down into the darkness of conspiracy. A cult, two priestesses, and the threads that puppet the world.
short story poll results
After a combination poll on Twitter, tumblr, and Substack, it was decided that I will write a Who is the Red Queen? short story to be delivered via this newsletter!
This short story is still in the concept phase. Please note that due to the multi-ending nature of the game, the short story should be considered non-canon or alt-canon.
I wonder what it’ll be about…
Perhaps a little short featuring Cheshire and the White Rabbit? Perhaps an exploration of what happens after a certain ending? Perhaps a story about the past between the White Queen and Red Queen?
Only time will tell.
socials
And with the slow and excruciating death of Twitter, I will make a quick aside to mention some other social media sites that I have made an account on.

misskey.io (fediverse, can be followed from mastodon)
bluesky
It’s hard to say what will take the place of the dying corpse of the bird app, but for the time being, please feel free to follow me on any of those places!
Still, the best way to keep track of my work will be:
this newsletter (even if substack dies, the newsletter can be transferred easily)
itch.io
game announcement…!
Now, enough with the gloomy talk. Let’s talk about something exciting! A game announcement!
This is not the long term project that I spoke of previously (you’ll have to wait a bit longer for that), but rather…New Project!! The Final Prize is Soup - a spooky grey background with 3 chibis of girls with black hair and gold, red, green-blue eyes from left to right.
I will be participating in Spooktober again this year as director, character designer, and co-writer for a survival horror yuri visual novel by the title, The Final Prize is Soup.
After a disastrous break up, Qian Hailu wakes up to find that she's dead. Luckily (or unluckily), she's been given a chance to turn back the clock and avert her death—as long as she can pass three rounds in the game of life. You who are unqualified to drink Meng Po's soup, you have been chosen for the game of life. Three worlds, three rounds. Win all three and you may avert your fated death. Lose any and your bones are forfeit for tomorrow's lunch broth. Good luck. Our ghosts have prepared their takeout containers, all plastic, non-microwaveable.
tldr. death game in the afterlife (ft. cannibalism lesbians)
You’ll hear from me about this game, hopefully, quite a lot during the upcoming month of September. Please look forward to it!

See you in September!

Threading the Needle
Tumblr media
Less than a single day after launch over 30 million people have joined Threads, Instagram's version of Twitter. The app is very much a minimum-viable-product copycat of Elon Musk's bird site, but their version of an MVP is still significantly more feature-rich and ready for prime-time than most other recent challengers to the throne.
The big advantage here is the use of Instagram's social graph to boost Threads signups on day one. The onboarding flow is as easy as "tap on your Instagram profile, tap on a second button to follow everyone you already follow over there, and you're done" which takes about fifteen seconds and is a significantly simpler experience than Bluesky which requires a highly coveted invite code or Mastodon which requires a whole separate blog post to explain. I think most users will discover pretty quickly that the people you followed for their photos or life updates are absolutely not the same people you want short-form text updates from... but how much does that really matter to Mark Zuckerberg who gets to boast Threads is well on its way to being the fastest growing social app of all time? Whatever gets you on board, baybee!
The app's single home feed is currently algorithm-heavy, mixing very few posts from people you follow in with a majority of posts from random users, celebrities, and brands platform-wide. The ratio is clearly way off here, and users have been loudly clamoring for a change. Adam Mosseri, Instagram and Threads' lead within Meta, has already publicly stated a feed of people you follow is incoming. Beyond that there are a lot of basic social networking features that are surprisingly absent from Threads at launch: Hashtags, usable search, post editing, post translation, alt-text on images — the group of features Mosseri has described as "on the list" feels exponentially huge. You have to wonder what the priorities will be and how long it will take to see some of these features come to the platform. Threads has a huge advantage out of the gate by tapping into Instagram's userbase of over two billion people, but retaining those users by listening to community feedback is going to be as challenging as building the app in the first place.
So it's worth keeping in mind Instagram's track record here. It's 2023 and Instagram still doesn't have an iPad app because it's "just not a big enough group of people to be a priority." Meta, one of the largest tech companies in the world, can't allocate any of their resources towards creating a high quality tablet experience for their app built around sharing and viewing photo and video? It's nonsensical! If the entire iPad userbase doesn't represent "a big enough group" to make a dedicated experience worthwhile, what does that say about accessibility features or other niche-but-important requests?
Assuming the state of Threads as it stands today will remain the same for an extended period of time, I see the app taking on a different life from just being "new Twitter." At launch, Twitter featured a reverse-chronological feed with no algorithmic intrusion, making it a great news delivery mechanism if you followed the right people. Those first few months and years of the service established the norms and future of how Twitter and the social web at large evolved. Third-party apps like Tweetie invented the pull-to-refresh interaction we see in every app on every device today. Users of Twitter began implementing hashtags as a way to more easily find like-minded community members via search, a feature which eventually became core functionality for the experience. But it all started with the launch product and timely updates from friends and proto-influencers. Twitter as a product has never really strayed too far from everyone's initial impression (despite Elon's best efforts).
By comparison, Threads is establishing its own norms in lieu of the aforementioned missing features. Brands are scrambling to figure out the right post-cadence and tone. Is posting breaking news moot in the face of an algorithmic feed? If your Threads and Instagram followers are the same, will posting images to a text-based platform feel redundant? These are questions which will be answered without intervention from Mosseri and team, and instead be dictated by the early adopters and community members who find hacky ways to actualize new methods of interaction with the toolset that is currently available in 1.0.
Am I excited that Mark Zuckerberg's Twitter has the best shot at being "the next big thing" given the many viable alternatives? Absolutely not! But there's no denying that Threads will be a hit despite Meta's track record for lying, stealing, and knowingly upending society. In the face of this, the internet-obsessed kid inside of me who loved to text 40404 to tweet in 2007 is excited to witness the birth and evolution of something that is accidentally unique because of what's missing instead of mind-numbingly samey because of what's already there.
I'm brendonbigley on Threads.
Catch you later!

I feel like perhaps people might have a little bit of a hard time figuring out that some bad things are worse than other bad things. (at least in generally small meaningless situations, where it really doesn't matter a whole bunch, but I still wanna complain about a post I saw anyways)
Saw a post where somebody was like "I will never use Bluesky as a social media platform, because Jack Dorsey is a Crypto Bro" which is honestly fine, (because damned if I can tell you to use a social media platform that objectively sucks ass) but the problem is that they seemed to imply that posting here on TUMBLR is somehow better.
Ya know, TUMBLR!! The website that was sued by the state of New York for algorithmicly suppressing and banning users for posting LGBTQIA stuff, and even AFTER getting sued, STILL regularly flags the profiles of trans creators as NSFW!! Tumblr!! The website that literally this past month has been deleting posts and banning users who are outspoken against GENOCIDE, because let's not forget here that TUMBLR is undenyably PRO-ISREAL and PRO-IDF as a company!!! The same Tumblr that has been slowly making itself less and less accessable over the years by bloating itself with features like Tumblr Live that every user hates!! THIS IS A WEBSITE WITH BAD MORALS, AND ISNT EVEN USEABLE ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY DEFENDING!!
AND WHERE ELSE ARE YA GONNA POST?? The fucking bird app that has the owner that regularly shares hate speech and allows PragerU to take out million dollar anti-trans ads?? The stupid short video app that is verifiably spyware that censors literally WHATEVER THEY FEEL LIKE whenever they want for no reason with no explanation?? The propaganda website run by the other awful tech dude bro who turned all our grandparents racist and regularly allows people to share harmful misinformation to interfere with foreign elections?? The photo app that's owned by the same people who own the racist grandpa app? The Other Other app that's owned by the people who own the racist grandpa app? The long video app that loves hate speech and conspiracy theories owned by the company who owns the most amount of data of any company ever, because they essentially own the internet? (in order: Twitter/X. Tiktok. Facebook. Instagram. Threads. YouTube.)
AND ALL OF THESE SERVICES ARE LITERALLY SPY WARE, ERODING YOUR PERSONAL PRIVACY IN FAVOR OF ADS!!!
like, fuck Bluesky and all, because it is GENUINELY a pretty dog shit service, but I fail to see in the grand scheme of things how its supposedly somehow worse than any other social media platforms. Jack Dorsey is a fucking LOSER and an annoying tech bro, but unfortunately he's probably a little bit less evil than the other techbros who have 100x as much money as him!!
Also, Tumblr users really like to hate on Tumblr 24/7, but then give it a weird pass whenever it's time to hate on other social media platforms, but you GOTTA stop deluding yourselves, TUMBLR is just as legitimately evil as the others!! It's simply got a liberal coat of paint on its facist core, and has a site culture that YOU LIKE BETTER than the other sites!!!
My thoughts on this extend to NewGrounds as well, because is certainly IS annoying that NewGrounds is run by shitty edgy artists, and has a general site culture of spoiled milk, but anybody who wants to pretend that edgy artists is somehow worse than Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, or whatever the fuck is going on with TikTok and Google is being disingenuine.
Use whatever Social Media platform you feel like, god fucking knows everyone out here is just trying to make meaningful connections to others and share pieces of themselves to internet users they would have no means of connecting with otherwise, but I really really implore Tumblr Users to stop acting like Their Shit Don't Stink.

I Stand with The T - Public Thread
I Stand with The T - Public Thread preserved from the implosion of Bird Site. Trans people are part of this cis lesbian's queer family.
Why This Post
The post below captures a thread I released on eXTwitter on May 2, 2022.* It’s been roughly 18 months since and I wouldn’t change a word – except the misuse of “whose” in the second paragraph. My account there is dormant.
There are so many lies and intellectually dishonest “What Ifs” being told directly to us, by some of us, about our trans family. It’s their goal to make us feel as if someone else's rights come at the expense of ours. This is the antithesis of feminism and there is nothing radical about it. It's the same old same old same old.
As I've said for years, rights must be universal or they're not rights.
Sisters of the Pen who Shaped Me
My philosophy around these complicated issues comes from learning the words of Judy Grahn, Joan Nestle, Joanna Russ, Octavia Butler, and Dorothy Allison. And so many more. Their fortitude, brilliance, and ability to sit with complexity without being numbed or overwhelmed into inaction are beacons of unity and love in a fractured world.
I am also grateful to my younger kid, who says, "I had a wonderful girlhood and grew up to be a man." It's inspiring to see him pulling together threads of himself that weren't working well together and now increasingly are. His example speaks loudly to me, especially that when I ask what seems a simple question, his first response is, "Well, yes and no. A lot and only sometimes. I can't speak for everyone about that."
I can't speak for everyone about that. A reality that influencers on social media oft ignore when stirring up the coin of their realm: Anger and Fear.
I Miss the Sapphic Community of eXTwitter
Please follow me at any of these sites:
Facebook Threads Bluesky
Over the past year, the sapphic community on the former Twitter became an oasis of normal in a vast morass of bigotry and "free speech" with the sole intent of bullying others into silence. The monkey-poo-barians were and are at the proverbial gates, which left me feeling anxious and unsafe though I was nearly always among friends.
Since the site has deleted accounts for mainstream journalists, non-partisan sources, and dissenting influencers who pointed out a business model now profiting off hate speech and violence, it's clear our presence there is merely tolerated, as if they simply haven't gotten to us yet. I'm not going back to living like that - it didn't feel good to be at or use the site anymore though I dearly care about the people there.
I posted my "Goodbye Twitter, it's not me, it's you" farewell in September of last year. I have copies of content posted there, and this is one thread that I simply didn't want to lose behind their paywall.
I Stand With the T Thread (unedited)
Tumblr media
A thread about LESBIAN. It's long, sorry/not sorry. I #StandWithTheT, people.
I'm a 60+ cis woman whose been a lesbian for 90% of her life. It took me years to say lesbian without inwardly flinching. I fought to use the word and use it proudly. It's my power word.
It's because I have lived with my hard-won lesbian identity all these decades that I can't fathom NOT standing with trans and bi people now.
I didn't arrive at this understanding easily. It took work, help, and mistakes, all of which was worth it in every way.
In yesteryears, we had to make places to be safe. When you claim space, the world wants it back. So we put up walls for the safety of those on one side of them.
There is no wall that will keep out the future, especially a future you've helped bring about. And here we are.
To anyone trying to use LESBIAN as a brick in another wall: I have seen your kind before. You're descendants of the lesbians that told me how I *ought* to like sex or what I *ought* to read, and who I should shun and hate.
You're the same ilk as lesbians who coined phrases like "gold star" and waged forever tedious arguments about what a "real" lesbian is.
If you police other people's identities, you're saying it's okay for others to police you. I read that in the 80s, FFS.
I see you terrifying yourself with one-off examples of some dude who behaved badly to justify your malignant attacks on millions of people as well as your bad faith, intellectually dishonest hand wringing.
This peril you feel is not because a trans person wants to pee.
I get that it's easier to attack people - especially those who can't punch up - instead of ideas. It's easily monetized for one thing.
Fighting ideas means dealing with icky nuances and complexities, and I am right there with you wanting the world to go back to being SIMPLER.
Well, the world never was simpler.
Part of lesbian struggle and history has always been about ENDING gender limitations. Any way a woman can be is therefore the way women are, remember?
Marriage was withheld from same sex couples because of sex boxes on marriage license applications.
Jobs, education, credit, wages - all withheld from women because we were forced to mark F on forms, and that F was legally sanctioned way to police and enforce how we behaved.
The first person I heard argue that her sex did not belong on a job application was a butch lesbian.
Other feminists made this point too, but the emphasis on defying and breaking gender norms was all lesbian for me. I've been "refusing to state" whenever possible for decades.
The evolution of thinking around individual identity has grown exponentially with each subsequent generation. It confounds and blurs the ever-present rules about how any of us can be in the world. It is, in part, *OUR* doing. It. Was. The. Whole. Point.
I am completely aware of our struggles as lesbians, and I know how much heart, blood, sweat, tears, and loss went into creating a Lesbian Nation.
I honor that and was in the smallest way part of it. I am still L.A.B.I.A.: Lesbian Against Boys Invading Anything.
It takes nothing away from the extraordinary achievements of generations of activist lesbians to say our movement was not perfect.
We walled people out because of who they loved or because their journey to a queer life was different from ours. Also true: We changed the world with only our will and persistence because it wasn't like we had money. We fought for every scrap of space to breathe.
Other queer people need space to breathe.
Ask yourself who is making you feel as if it's YOUR air they are taking.
Spoiler: It's the same people it's always been. It's good for them if they pretend air is scarce and we fight over it.
This is an old lesson. Could all y'all hurry up with learning it?
Your attacks on the trans community in the name of lesbian solidarity and history betray both. Worse, they are attacks on yourself. The energy and anger you give to malice and lies about our trans family is coin in the pocket of the same people who WILL come for you next.
The same people who happily point you at the rest of us to make money and consolidate power are targeting trans people like they targeted "Adam & Steve" in the 00s, "Sluts" (women who refuse men) in the 90s, AIDS victims in the 80s, "Groomer" pedophiles in the 70s...
In the language of feminism, you are complicit in your own oppression. Your harm to yourself is harm to our entire community. It weakens all of us and makes it easier to send us back into closets to breathe the scarce air. Again, could y'all hurry up and learn this lesson?
For my trans and bi friends who are tl;dr, some lesbians use "lesbian" in an ugly way to be ugly to you. I know you can't afford to ignore them. You're not alone in having eyes on them.
It seems more true every day: we only have each other. You know you're a writer when, in spite of a boatload of compliments and reactions, all you can see is the misuse of "whose" in the very first tweet.

bird-site be damned
Familia, I have a Bluesky profile now at /regal-gleam.
It's basically the same handle as mine the Dying Bird site, but the muskrat has made me mad for so long that I needed to find another out before it's too late, lmao. Also, I'm just petty. Though, I almost came up with another, new handle for it to fit my "royal light" mythos of social usernames. I still might, to be honest; we'll see.
Anyway, give me (your) profiles to follow and inspirations of things to see, do, and whatever else have you.
Shout out @littlescaryinternetguy for the code. 💖

Money-to-Mouth Syndrome
In the wake of what's transpired considering Tumblr's turbulent future, I've decided to chip in with an Ad-Free subscription, being someone who used to run primarily off of adblockers.
Mastodon isn't growing as well as I'd hoped, and most of its users are people who would've subscribed to it out of ethical concerns. It's not the popular platform, as it were. I don't like the idea of the server that was pitched as being the "best match" for me being an exclusively IT-focused one, and I don't like the sense that Mastodon is fast becoming an island unto itself - basically what Linux was before Ubuntu broke into the mainstream and helped to usher in today's distro-filled world. People talk about the Fediverse without really understanding the concept of federating communities, and it feels like the terminology is calcifying before my eyes.
Threads is a waste of time for me. It's so focused on being "friendly" that it offers less features than Twitter and seems to be geared towards base visibility. I never used Twitter to step forward, I used it as a second glorified RSS feed.
Bluesky is a non-entity as of now, as it's tiptoeing towards a public release. As for Facebook, it's mostly where my parents share old one-panel Bizarro strips. I have zero interest in it.
That leaves me with Tumblr - and only Tumblr.
I like the people I know from here. I enjoy reading my mutuals or picking stuff out of the dashboard. The closest analogue is Facebook, but it's actually far more sanitized. Not every post comes with thousands of comments spewing hate and misinfo. Yes, there's a few and I'm sure I'd find a ton if I bothered to check out the Alt-Right or Radfem circles around Tumblr - but I don't.
If you give me a choice between voting with my wallet or watching while Mullenweg et al. divest Tumblr of its purpose for the sake of base profitability, I'm whipping out the ol' VISA without so much as a second's worth of hesitation.
As for Twitter - it's irrelevant now, and it's been that way long before Musk got involved. Twitter's death knell sang the moment you heard about Right-wing firebrands launching their own little echo chambers. The dream of the Online Public Space is dead, we've instead formed cliques and fostered an increasingly divisive climate that's had catastrophic consequences for the world, the environment and our sociopolitical development. Things went south at Twitter the exact moment Jack Dorsey stopped being the public face of the company. The place used to champion clarity of expression and base fucking decency, now it twists democracy out of shape because you're supposedly expected to let the howler monkeys flinging poo have their own shot at "self-expression".
Sure, the artists on the Bird Site cling to it because it's where their communuties developed, but communities are like flocks. If you're worth it as a creator, you'll be followed elsewhere.
As for NSFW content... Shit, find an oligarch with an unlimited firehose of seed money, settle your server architecture in the Bahamas and take the occasional errant payment in crypto, and chances are you could survive a few years as a platform that allows smut, by virtue of being wholly unknown of standard credit issuers. Eventually, though, the same secrecy that enables the existence of smut on your platform could be abused by bad actors for all sorts of things, too. Considering, I just don't see porn ever featuring on a platform in a permanent and visible capacity.

Twitter has so quickly turned to a bigger pile of crap. And yet, people are still resistant to leave.
On one hand, I can understand the whole, "don't want to lose the huge following," but it's not like you have to deactivate once you go on a different platform. Just direct people to the new one you're going on and just take the attrition.
Twitter has NO:
support
security -> it's actually a HUGE security risk right now
structure
development team
content moderation
privacy -> apparently devs have a god mode where they can actually sign in AS you and do whatever they want
I'm sure i'm still missing a handful of bullet points, but the above should be enough.
I'm really curious what will make people leave that site. Because even engagement has degraded. And that's on purpose. If you want more views/hits, you need to pay the $8/month. I read an article on Wired (i think it was Wired) that was saying that the numbers you see on your post aren't even real. It's faked to make you believe a lot of people are engaging with you. I'm looking at some old tweets traffic and each one has "Something went wrong" on them.
Can you guys reblog and recommend to your friends alternatives to the bird site? Here's a handful of my opinions here about sites that people have gravitated to:
Mastodon - THIS is honestly the best TWITTER alternative. It's content moderated by a human TEAM. Like System Admins literally have a team. They comply with international laws, which Twitter is currently NOT doing. They are NOT centralized and if you sign up to be on one instance and realize it's not for you, you can MIGRATE to another one whilst carrying your followers over, because it's part of the fediverse.
Instagram - A lot of artists gravitate to this platform. I've heard that it is work to fight the algorithm unless you already have a massive following. Wouldn't want to start from scratch here - again, from what I've heard.
Tumblr - Tumblr is so friggin hard to describe. It's an absolute place to goof off, but will have these epiphany type posts or even stuff you learn about. It's absolutely a place where you learn new things that's too unbelievable to take as truth, then you go look it up and there it is... science. Tumblr has a ton of catradora content and that's generally why I'm here. It's a fandom site, it's a shitpost site (let's be honest, it's mostly a shitpost site), but it HAS this serious side to it. Tumblr is the annoying friend you hang out with because while they can be fucking bat shit crazy sometimes, they'll actually sit down and have a real talk with you if you need it.
facebook - pfffffffffff you kidding? facebook is your racist alcoholic-by-choice abusive uncle. FUCK THAT GUY
Hive - an absolute flop of an alternative. It's essentially in the same state as Twitter is in right now regarding, privacy, support, and security.
BlueSky - for those unfamiliar, this is Jack Dorsey's (original creator of twitter) next "big thing". Thing is, Jack has lost the trust of his original audience. I know I certainly don't want to touch this site/app. The big idea is that he's creating the social media as a protocol which can be built upon from third party companies. But you wanna know who already did that? Mastodon!
You know, mastodon is new, so it still has some issues to iron out, but it's in SUCH a better state than what original twitter guy can do. It's open source and ad free. Which means you actually have privacy instead of your data getting sold left and right.
ANYWAY - Long post - woops - hopefully you can help me convince people to leave the trash site. There's still a small handful of catradorians left that I follow closely that's "keeping" me there.
