I hope Ed and Stede go on their little date while Stede wears the red shirt and then he finds the slutty blue one somewhere and decides that he wants to wear it immediately and changes right in front of Ed who has to pretend to be all casual about it like yeah no big deal but in reality Ed is like 👀👀👀

Archie has clearly heard from crewmates some of the backstory about her captain and the man who broke his heart. Expecting Stede to be taller, muscly, more charismatic is of a piece with Izzy thinking, "Honestly I don't think this Bonnet is worth your time," Jack expressing incredulity about the "big gal" Blackbeard has shacked up with, and apparently some historical sources befuddled by a still weak, nightshirt-clad Stede wandering the deck during raids while Blackbeard was aboard the Revenge.
Stede's superpower is that people consistently underestimate him. This is partly because costuming has done an amazing job of obscuring those arms. It's also partly because many people around him at least initially undervalue traits like collegiality, contagious enthusiasm, and desire to give people the benefit of the doubt, all of which he has in abundance.
But Archie's line echoes a moment from "Discomfort in a Married State," where Lucius thought Blackbeard would be taller. The parallel between these scenes suggests that the myth is always bigger (and less interesting) than the person it surrounds. Even in his Blackbeard persona, Ed's power lies more in theater and persuasiveness than in being physically imposing.
And what makes Ed and Stede compelling to each other is that Ed sees and values a strength and creativity in Stede that no one else consistently recognizes, while Stede sees and values a softness and desire for intimacy in Ed that no one else recognizes. Archie is yet one more person showing us that these two guys understand each other in a way other people don't.

Nothing in Masters of the Air has fucked me up like Paulina (the Polish woman in London) hesitating in the doorway. We don't know who she was before Germany invaded Poland, but she comes across, unsurprisingly, as a woman profoundly changed. She's both blunt (the reveal that she's married) and withholding (getting however many shots deep with Bucky before the reveal), mocking ("he wanted to be a hero, like you") and yearning (drawn to Bucky anyway), playful ("take me dancing first") and fatalistic (the worst survive, the innocent die). She's trusting and/or lonely enough to stay the whole night, but might have left without saying goodbye if Bucky hadn't woken up. She rejects him ("we should not make more of this than what it was") and he still asks her out, so she's vulnerable not because she's been drinking and not to see if he will fuck her despite her brutal account of her husband's death—this time, she expresses her loss romantically ("my heart could not take another pilot in the potato field"). She could take it. She has before. But her heart could not. After being blunt and withholding and mocking and fatalistic, she tenderly defamiliarizes Bucky even as he's still in front of her, calling him "sweet man," hinting at the way she will remember him. And still, still, she hesitates in the doorway on her way out of the hotel room, and we can feel how badly she aches in both directions: the slowly dulling, everyday pain of carrying on alone, and the agony of getting attached to another pilot/hero/sweet man. She was always going to leave, but for four seconds (I counted), she stands completely still and just wants while neither we nor Bucky can see her face.

I had heard that they turned Oma and Shu into two women before, and I thought: Okay, they are replacing one type of forbidden love (their peoples are enemies) with another (they are both women and that violates societal roles). But no, they just do the same story with a changed pronoun.
And I think it looses some of its meaning through this: In the original story, Shu, the man, is killed in war. We can, I think, presume that this was in a society with gender roles that restricted war to men (and at the same time made it a duty forced on them). But the death of her lover makes Oma step out of her own presumably domestic gender role and perform a demonstration of power. However, she then uses that power not for more violence but to make peace. - I'm not even sure to what extend it was intentional, but even if it wasn't it worked.
The original Atla critically engaged with gender roles. The live action version largely tries to pretend they don't exist. I wonder how they will handle it when they come to the Northern Water Tribe.
Now if they had made Oma and Shu two lesbians, forbidden from meeting by their arranged-marriage-husbands, that could have been equally interesting - at that point in the show it could foreshadow Yue. Say that Oma then forced a law that outlawed arranged marriage and since then in the Earth Kingdom people only marry for love, which can be an inspiration for Yue to rebel against her father or something like that.

I got to watch episode 4! Very happy with this episode as a whole even if not a huge fan of certain choices. Kept track of my reactions as I went in notes app and they’re below the cut.
I love baby Percy. However not a big fan of Sally in this scene. I get that she’s allowed to be frustrated but I don’t think she would hold the fact they paid for the lesson over Percy’s head.
Every time I hear forbidden kid all I can think of is CaffeinatedFlumadiddle’s Son of Sea Foam.
“I gotta earn it with you too” Damn I love them so much.
“It isn’t supposed to work that way.” I love baby Percy’s radicalization. You’re right you don’t deserve to be treated like that. “Pay your Child support” Percy has been here since the beginning.
“It’s everybody.“ oh poor baby Annabeth. I knew the backstory but framing it as her not being a gift hurt a lot.
HELL YEAH!!! PAN MENTION!!! I have been waiting for this since the season started. I’m an unproportionately excited about this.
The police officer scenes made me way too apprehensive. I’m so much more worried about them now given casting.
I am so confused by Echidnas earlier entrance. It feels less cinematic to meet her on the train versus the arch. There’s no element of surprise either. What was a cute moment of character growth as they visited somewhere Annabeth always wanted to go as they waited. It would be stupid to retreat to the Arch now.
“This has always been a family story” I want this overlaid on all the gifsets.
They’re really playing into the later themes where the demigods are monsters. Like I thought Percy really only starting to feel that way in Tartarus when faced with Bob. He might have felt bad about being a hero and trying to prove he was nothing like Hercules in TTC but it wasn’t an overarching demigods are the monsters mindset.
Really glad the Chimera didn’t appear as a service dog. Cute little puppy wandering down the corridor is perfect.
Oh so the Arch is a temple. I’m glad they have a reason to go there. I was worried they would go there despite being hunted.
Ugh I’m not a fan of how Athena blames Annabeth for the head.
Fuck Percy’s going to jump into the river thinking that he’s going to die. Sure he might pray but he won’t believe it.
Annabeth was going to sacrifice herself like Thalia. She wasn’t going to let a forbidden kid die for her again (and you know she was the one in best fighting shape)
The water grabbing him was so cool. I loved being able to see the concrete below him and then the water reached out for him. “He’s here and he’s so very proud” God I’m going to cry.
This tv show is very pro Poseidon. Like yeah it’s largely anti-gods but the comparison between Athena and Poseidon this episode had him way on top. Athena was essentially going to let her daughter be killed (which actually lines up with her treatment of Annabeth in MOA, just sending countless of her children to die on an impossible quest and treating it like an honor). Percy talks about not even wanting to pray to his dad and his dad saves him anyway. (Yes I realize last episode had the Medusa stuff but feel like that was less impactful after she tried to kill them.)
Really wish we had the reunion this episode but oh well guess I have to wait for next week.

Bridgerton S1E4: "An Affair of Honour" | Thoughts
❝ Daphne receives a stunning gift from Prince Friedrich but soon courts scandal at a ball. Eloise searches for clues to Lady Whistledown's identity. ❞
After nearly an eternity of procrastinating between school and work... I finally get the chance to watch Bridgerton. I’m so looking forward to watching the new season and keep seeing spoilers all over the internet. When will it be my turn to be fangirling over Kanthony and Polin? 😩 It might be a while at the rate I’m watching these episodes…
Find my reactions to other episodes of Bridgerton here and to episodes from other TV shows here! 🐝
LMAO Violet Bridgerton is me when I’m hungry and don’t want to make it obvious
Oh, to be a girl having a prince tell me I'm perfection... can't relate
Tumblr media
Dang, someone seems to be taking out his anger too much on the punching bag… 👀
Me remembering that we will have to wait at least a year before season 4:
Tumblr media
Me when the dentist and hygienists pressure me to get braces or invisalign every single time I have an appointment knowing dang I do not have $8000 just sitting in my pocket that I would rather use to pay student loans:
Tumblr media
Side note: some of these gif reactions are more relatable to me than everyone else, but a girl's gotta rant one way or another and why not have it here on Tumblr with Bridgerton gifs 😪
I live for stolen glances across the room, especially in slow-burn romance but I get the feeling Simon and Daphne's story doesn't necessarily follow this
Tumblr media
Daphne, your thirstiness is showing 🤔 The second the sleeves get pushed up and the arm veins pop out, miss ma'am's jaw hits the ground like she isn't right beside the prince of Prussia
Not Simon jealously staring at Daphne and the prince thinking "tHaT sHoUlD bE mE, hOlDiNg YoUr HaNd"
Another side note, can we talk about how shy and smiley Benedict is? The fact that he scrunches up his face and closes his eyes just cringing about the critique he gave is actually kind of adorable
I like that Violet and Lady Danbury are basically the ones pushing Simon and Daphne to realize their feelings for each other... mothers know best in their case
I've recently started reading The Duke and I and I think I can start to see the differences between the show and the book. For starters, I don't remember Simon breaking off the agreement between him and Daphne making them fight? I thought it was something they continued in the book, even letting Anthony know the whole thing was a ruse for their own benefits. Second, I don't remember there being a prince in the book? Were these just added to the show to add more tension?
PLEASE not Mama Bridgerton downing her entire champagne flute just begging Simon to pop his head into the ballroom to save Daphne
HAHAHA omg I'm so sleep-deprived that I seriously thought Violet was the opera singer beside Anthony's side chick
Excuse me Polin, I saw that lingering gaze... 👀
"I aM mArRyInG tHe PrInCe" oh is that why you twirled away from him every single chance he tried to propose or is that playing hard to get? 🤔
Okay unpopular opinion, but am I the only one who would accept Prince Friedrich's proposal? Like sweet, kind, wants to start a family, showers you with compliments. I feel like he would not be hard to love and you wouldn't have to constantly second-guess yourself, your values and what you want out of life with him
I don't remember them fighting like this with their kiss in the gardens?
Now Anthony bursting into the scene and landing a nice right-hook on Simon... that I remember very well. Hehe.
Simon is so hot-cold?? 😠 that kind of drives me nuts! you tell her you're not friends, the next you're taking it back. you apologize for kissing her, the next you're making out alone with her and groping her bum. you make her fall in love with you, then you tell her you can't ever marry knowing dang well she's ruined if people saw them kissing alone with no chaperone?? it just irritates me when people don't know what they want and at the expense of toying with others' feelings
Tumblr media
I don't blame Anthony for being so overprotective and challenging Simon to a duel. I feel like if I were an older sibling in that era and someone refused to take responsibility for what they and my sibling engaged in, I'd be seething too
I've been spoiled already about the big reveal with Penelope in season 2, but I honestly can't help but feel for her? like imagine seeing the very real possibility that your childhood love gets married off to someone distant in your family and you have to pretend that you're okay the entire time just because you feel you're not good enough? but I will say the way she spat out that she isn't a pretty bridgerton was a little harsh
Anthony I love you, but I don't like how you coddle Daphne like she isn't her own woman
"Good God. Did someone die?" oh Colin, thank you for breaking the tension with your comic relief
These two rakes are so laughable, like please... reduce the context to a simple sentence... they are willing to die over a make-out session
The thing that annoys me is that Simon was willing to kiss Daphne and be seen privately with her in the garden while groping her everywhere, yet he still won't take responsibility for that after finding out that someone's seen them and Daphne's reputation will be ruined? like if he's saying he couldn't marry her, then don't kiss her in the first place?? I just don't get it
Um... what was that ending? I literally have no words. didn't realize you could put a stop to two rakes' pride by just announcing you'll marry one rake? confused
