tbh if you ever feel like dishing I would be interested in a breakdown of the writing room in-fighing in spn ;) I always find the tidbits you drop here and there very thought-provoking. I have my own bias in terms of which writers I stan and I enjoy thinking about bts dynamics. No pressure ofc, but since you mentioned that you *could* expand on that but didn't think people would believe you, I figured I'd let you know you'd have an interested reader here

Alright. I got another comment asking for this too, so here we go.

I'll be clear in that while I know some business decisions before season 9, most of my actual dedicated info for this starts season 9, hence saying seasons 9-15.

Before that though, it's important to learn about a few other things so let's dig in.

So first off, when SPN was made this old blooded industry guy had found a guy writing under WW Vought for Sam's War, filmed it, it didn't work, they tried again. Singer was basically the sign on to give kripke a shove, and stayed long after kripke. he had his personal idyllic takes on the show which aged like milk.

Showrunners rotated and Singer stayed. After Kripke fully left, Singer even hired back in his wife. Singer was never GOOD industry blood. His highest rated film was Cujo which is still a rotten tomatoes embarassment. But he had the clout to get it rolling.

Over time, new showrunners came in and had less and less power compared to Singer more and more rooted in with his wife.

While season 8 carver came in with his 3 year plan, most of it ended up on the cutting room floor or dumped in a bathtub

Carver ran his room a little bit competitively-- like, it was bad enough dealing with Singer's takes, and Carver wanted to do what he wanted to do for that plan and assigned it through. If authors had other ideas, they kinda had to pump it out in an episode, which is why you got killer standout episodes from individual authors like Thompson or Edlund. (One exception arose: the Thompson-Berens friendship picking up one another's plot ends eg First Born > Executioner's Song, Colette, etc which berens even brought up as MOC in S15)

But Carver wasn't down for Singer's shit. Almost the whole room railed against Singer about Charlie, but he made sure his wife wrote it and he directed it when everyone protested. This also made for the season 11 author exodus once contracts expired.

By season 12, not only was Dabb taking over, but really only singer's wife eugenie (and buckner), and bobo were left of old guard. Everyone else walked out. Bobo was still amped for Wayward and stayed. It started as a season 10 fan pitch, got rolled around a few years and almost got launched S12 but was delayed for creative reasons. So he stuck while everyone else walked out.

This is also when the market testing started, and probably came by way of the S9 Destiel books Some Folks:tm: sent to Some Authors:tm: about demographics and testimonials, which Meg Fitz was reading a week after joining Dabb's crew.

For the first year or so (s12), the new writing room was a little cluttered but it was because bobo was grooming the new kids into working as a unit, rather than a competition. Dabb opened up his methods "melting pot" style on ideas, everyone threw their stuff in, they laid it out and figured out how much they could use and where to assign it.

But Eugenie still clung to Eugening and for a while, they tried to write around her. Dangled Mark P carrots to keep her happy and hyperfocused on that and then didn't touch the topics themselves and wrote around it in a way you can almost delete Mark P.

And they were like, hm, this is working. But really eugenie and singer don't even watch the show, they barely ever check the dailies

...we just... all... were dabb.

And so they did.

So Dabb gave Berens permission to forge showrunners notes and shit, and kept giving authors clearance to write on whatever. Bobo sort of fathered the philosophy charge and bound together their work, and just. Like, Jeremy for example talking about the help Berens gave him with Last Call is the friendly face of it. The less friendly is fandom wondering why "We Are" is in 15.02 when it's not in the script. I told yall for ages that was Berens overwriting Eugenie, and this is how, and that's not the only place.

Over time you might notice, especially S15, buckleming eps weren't... awful? they weren't overall great but they'd have some surprisingly good shit and be a little less chaotic.

It's because Dabb and Berens realized, you don't argue with Singer, or someone gets dumped in a bathtub offscreen. Just use the fact that chuck doesn't care and wanders off until he wants to force his version of the story down everyone's throat.

The crew was actually intending to make use of budget and filming/schedule limits to run a ball. Covid dropping was just. Ugh. It gave Singer time to realize his entire crew had betrayed him basically.

It wasn't JUST corporate itself slapping back. Singer was that old industry arm for that, and why we had a deadweight on progress and change. It was Singer slapping back and digging in the knife. Or the dickbar. And laughing as Dabb's Pie got smashed in Dean's face when he finally wanted to live and eat. Yeah you can see him laughing with his covid band. Classy.

Dabb got boned at the end. As it was he was barely writing it. He tried to save a lot of Berens and Meredith's work and plans, or what could make it, like Miracle. But I mean, they were fucked 17 ways to sunday, he didn't have his team, his rebels, his crew, he didn't have any of his shit. He just had singer, eugenie, and showalter trying his DAMNDEST to still tell a visual story with 15.19. There's a reason Showalter came back and Singer didn't.

Berens trained up Meredith as his protoge in that time. Others like Yockey were on board, Davy was the supportive and energetic friend and Dabb Let Them Do. Yockey moved on, the others stuck through and ran it as hard as they could.

But there's a reason Meredith was called Berens Work Boyfriend, despite the genders and stuff not matching their sexual prefs etc. It's because the S15 shit was real, man. Chuck didn't care and they would never give him the story they want. Everyone knew Meredith was Dean and Bobo was Cas and they were Work Boyfriends and that's just what it is, so fucking cope.

This shit is why it was kept low key. Like, yes, A FEW SELECT PEOPLE knew it was written first on the season, and got screamed at and called delusional all year by denialists. But even people that know these authors IRL were largely clueless--Natalie Fischer, for example, knows Meredith IRL, but was so clueless about it that she was arguing "don't get people's hopes up" when I said an ILU was coming... and I had the leak in three languages.

It was the only reason he stayed. Anyone that knew him--REALLY KNEW HIM--knew that, before he hinted it at S15 SDCC. Wayward getting murdered on contract BS almost made him walk out, but he stayed only for this, and wrote it first, and made sure the season orbited it. Then they got fucked again by covid, and 2po makes confused monkey sounds why berens might still be influencing it via talking with his bestie but not wanting to sign his soul into another 2 year contract.

Which is why I talk about fandom not understanding the limits of their would be leakers. Know their caps, man.

Either way that's the rough of it. If there's any followup questions I can probably add to it.

Robbie's heavyhanded romance sprint he was told to chill down the accidental predestination on in The Winchesters showed signs of Carver-Singer room trauma. Like THESE ARE MY IDEAS, MINE, I'M WRITING THEM ALL, IT'LL BE A 3 HOUR EPISODE, FUCK YOU. And his friends get to be like. calm down dude you can cowrite the whole season nobody's taking it away from you now. We can do this right.

Also I don't think Jensen was planning TW before or after SPN ended. They were thinking of reunion two or 5 years down the line but definitely not TW. TW born out of desperation.

I'm not sure where you are getting this because we know from Jensen himself that it was planned before SPN even finished filming the final season? We know this because we know that while they were filming the final season Jensen called Kripke to ask permission to use the SPN IP for TW and that is when he asked him about work and TB. We know this timeline from multiple people including both Jensen and Kripke. The phone call happened during the COVID break during s15 filming (aka before the last two eps filmed). That's how we know that he was already planning to make TW and went to work with Jared every day for at least 2 weeks (they had two eps left to film per the timeline from Jensen and Kripke) and lied to his face (lie of omission) and didn't mention anything to him even though TW was actively underway bts the scenes during that time.

Well, I stand corrected ....But then that is even worse as it means he is the worst producer and storyteller. I mean, if he had been planning it since 2020 and this is the shit that came up with, then he should just stop and give the CM production to someone who can do justice. He is definitely not a storyteller. He doesn't know market or casting or even the basic scripting and production duties.

I do believe Jensen is trying but it may not be enough. It’s obvious that he’s struggling to get the roles and work that I think he THOUGHT he would have. He changed agents in 2019 and used the Bacchus King, Nascar and Vancouver soccer events as PR to elevate his image before spn ended.

Jared bowed out of that soccer tourney to give Jensen the solo PR.

He auditioned for the voice of Batman in an open casting process in 2018 and landed a series of three animation movies which he recorded bt 2018 and 2021.

Jensen seemed to panic a bit during s15 hiatus when he had nothing lined up. He worked his connnections as anyone seeking work should. He had meetings with CW execs, WB execs — probably asking for a holding deal (jared got one so I am sure he believed he should too). He reached out to Kripke to see if he had anything. (Which he did with SB). WB gave him the production company in lieu of a holding deal or a series to star in. So he was pretty booked in 2021 bt The Boys, Batman voice, Rust, and his EP duties of CMP (as limited as they were).

Fast forward to post Rust (Nov 2021). He admitted he had nothing lined up going into 2022 and again he panicked a bit a asked his agent to schedule introductions meetings along with him contacting his network on his own. Jared lines him up for a Walker directing gig, and he secures a guest role on Big Sky for the s2 finale.

Going into 2022, he hired a new PR team (Narrative) and had to change agents again (bc his previous one committed suicide in January 2022).

Narrative and/or his agent secured him the Hawaii pro am in January to play with one of the stars from Cobra Kai and Sony’s CEO (the one that claims The Boys and Cobra Kai as it’s two biggest wins).

Narrative secured the Man About Town placement and extended photoshoot that they’ve used in their media pitches.

He went all out on The Boys PR.

And in the spring also secured regular role on BS.

Now it’s end of 2022. What’s lined up for 2023?

TW is a bust. And doesn’t seem like Narrative is managing anything to do with Chaos projects and it shows.

IF Big Sky gets another season, will Beau be a part of it? My guess is yes.

Kripke has eluded that SB will be in s5 (if they get picked up) so it’s very likely SB may make an appearance in one of the last episodes in s4 to show him getting “off ice”. But nothing is definite. Kripke also eluded that he was thinking of a SB spin-off. But nothing definite.

Jared will allow him to direct Walker and/or Windy again — and give him a part - if Jensen wants it.

Jensen is working the network as I am sure his agent is too. It’s a tough business and Jensen looks like 80% of the white male actors out there and he’s more average. While he is very hot and handsome, he’s average. Many others work on their body a lot more and doing way more artistic editorial “thirst trap” style shoots, or are into a social cause or a hobby. Some use their social to entertain. I agree with you that he needs to do something more to stand out, define who he is among the sea of actors. He has a brewery, his music, his production company and his daddy/family time. Yet he rarely talks about any of it in the public, except at cons when he’s specifically asked a question. Whereas others actors at his peer levels promote their identity — maybe its showcasing their workouts or their writing process or bts of being a producer or some cook or show their kitchen skills or some show their off time of being a dad or others post funny TikTok’s with comments and use their sm to entertain. All seem to do it consistently and that is the key secret, and where jensen lacks the most.

Is this why he is doing a Radio Co concert? This may be a fallback to keep him busy and away from family if he doesn’t have acting/directing gigs lined up. Just like most things with Jensen, music, FBBC, wife/family, CMP all seem to be side projects to support others in his life and are not true passionate projects for him. That’s what he’s projecting and the image he has created.

I get the same impression, that his Radio Company concerts are a way to have something lined up and he may not truly be passionate about any of it. Same with all the rest you mentioned, it truly seems like he is unfulfilled because he missed the mark on something. I hope he finds what is ideal for him. It's never too late and it doesn't have to match anyone's expectation of him.

After the Lewis ask and your answer (and additional post) this just struck me and I had to get it out. Are we looking for an unrealistic level of personal narrative on a show that is still ultimately a standard police procedural? Like, I just, IDK, there is so much that happened in the time EO were apart that we want to see them talk about, but ultimately the show still has to serve the case of the week and it would take some very specific cases to tie in with *waves at just all the shit Liv went through, good and bad, over the years* that stuff. I'm not saying I don't think some of it could happen but are we setting ourselves up to be ultimately disappointed? I mean, OC would make more sense as a place for this to happen, but considering all the BTS on that set, seems hard to coordinate between the two shows.

i'm really glad you sent this, and i've been thinking over my answer since i saw it last night.

perspective is so, so important.

i talk a lot about things i would like to see, and sometimes i talk about things i think eo should do as if they are characters i have some control over, but i wanna point out something that i think i haven't really touched on that much:

i do not, for one second, expect that we will actually get the things i am talking about.

the lewis conversation, the tucker conversation, a bottle episode where they just sit and talk, the rest of the squads reacting to their relationship, these are beats i would put in there if i was writing the story, but unless and until those things actually happen, i don't expect the show to do them.

part of what left me so disheartened after the crossover last week was that i did something that i never do, and i got on twitter the day of the episodes. this was a mistake, bc i got sucked into the hype. i got sucked into the expectation. i had no expectations of my own, but after reading and getting excited about everyone else's expectations, i was in a headspace where i imagined all sorts of big things that had not been promised or even hinted at, and so was underwhelmed by the final result.

this was not a failure on the part of the show, bc what they did on the crossover was good, and important for the characters' journey. this was not me being baited, bc literally no one with any say in the show had given me reason to expect anything other than what we got. i built up expectations that were unfounded. i played myself.

i think the show could do these things. we've seen it; s15 gave us an olivia romance, gave us olivia at home, gave us lots of insight into where her head was at, gave us her emotional growth. they did something happened, which was a bottle episode that centered on olivia's conflicted feelings towards her own father. they are capable of going to these places while preserving their case of the week format.

but it is important to maintain perspective. it is important to remember that we cannot expect something that has been promised. we can want it, and we can talk about how cool it would be if it happened, and we can talk about how we would like to see it go down if it did happen, but we gotta take what comes in stride. the show can only follow one course. it cannot give us every single emotional beat we want; even if it was a straight up soap, it still wouldn't hit every suggestion fandom has made. and that's not us being offered a carrot and being bashed with a stick; they only get one shot at it.

fandom gets unlimited shots! we can do whatever we want! we can create every single possibility we would like to see. so often when i talk about things i would like to see in the future, i am approaching them from the fannish perspective; that is, if this story was mine, this is what i would do. not "this is absolutely what the story must do, and if it doesn't we have been robbed."

we are not entitled to storylines that no one ever told us they would write. that is an unpleasant feeling to sit with, sometimes, bc the story means so much to so many people, and we all want, desperately, to see some follow through on these things. but to use an analogy i wrote in a post that was never published, imagine if you will that svu is a hot dog cart. they make good hot dogs, that's their thing. but it turns out they make good baked beans, too. and people go crazy for the baked beans. they can't make enough baked beans to meet the unexpected demand, bc the baked beans were only ever supposed to be a side dish. they're happy people like the baked beans, but a little flummoxed, too. what about the hot dogs? they opened this cart to sell hot dogs. sometimes it kinda sucks that all these people are asking for beans, and ignoring the hot dogs. sure, maybe they could stop selling hot dogs and just sell the beans, but there's not quite enough demand for beans to keep them solvent, and they don't wanna make baked beans all day. they're a hot dog cart.

we fucking love the baked beans! but that's not what the cart is there for, and when it runs out of beans, we can't be shocked. they only wanted to sell hot dogs.

i will say, however, that i would not place the blame for the difficulty coordinating on oc. not while the only person saying it was difficult to coordinate is the one who spent the last DECADE bashing elliot, shading chris, and acting like a petulant baby when he was asked to share his toys. if svu had a showrunner without a massive chip on his shoulder for the last two years, i imagine the landscape would look vastly different.
