Bloc Sharkel wins Student Council election by landslide
Tumblr media
This article is part of a series covering the Student Council election.
The Student Council Secretary announced the results of the Student Council election this morning at 8 AM.
Almost the entirety of the newly elected Council was part of Bloc Sharkel. Shifa Syed and Fatima Abowath won the presidential race, Zubair Rahman and Saleem Gonzales won the Grade 9 race, Hussein Barakat and Ariana (Will) Kouyoumdjian won the Grade 10 race, Eisha Amir won the Grade 11 race, and Ahsen Khan won the Grade 12 race. The only exceptions were Allora Douglas in Grade 12, where Bloc Sharkel only ran one candidate for the two seats, and Teagan Penner in Grade 11, where her opponent Mustafaa Gonzales did not attend the debate.
Commenting on their victory, President Shifa Syed and Vice President Fatima Abowath said, “We look forward to another year of success in uniting the student body, fostering student engagement, and bringing about chaos.”
Ryan Wong of the Student Unification Society (S.U.S.), which lost to Bloc Sharkel, commented, “Congratulations to Shifa Syed, I implore you to not squander your second chance. It was great running against you and your party.” His running mate, Cozzette Pilkington, said she was “quite pleased” with the outcome of the election, having previously noted in public that she did not want to be Vice President anyway.
Students are eager to see whether the new Council will live up to their expectations or not.

Indians Essentially End Twins Season.
Twins 6 Indians 7 W-McCarty (4-2) L-Rodriguez (0-1)
The Minnesota Twins playoff hopes are all but gone and the team needs to look to the future to close out 2022. Josh Winder took the hill tonight as the Twins capped off a doubleheader in Cleveland. The Indians were ready from the start as Steven Kwan was in the foot to lead-off the first inning. Amed Rosario reach on an infield single and Oscar Gonzalez lined a run-scoring double to left. The Tribe had a one-run lead after an inning of play. Josh Winder and Konnor Pilkington put up zeroes throughout the early innings and the Indians got back to work in the fifth. Tyler Freeman drew a two-out walk. Steven Kwan lined a single to right and Amed Rosario smacked a Josh Winder slider out to right for a three-run homer. Cleveland took a 4-0 lead after five innings of play. Konnor Pilkington threw 5 2/3 no-hit innings until Jose Miranda broke it up in the sixth. The Indians kept adding on in the seventh. Steven Kwan started it all with a two-out double to right. Amed Rosario singled him home as the Indians lead grew to five. The Twins had some life left in them in the eighth. Jake Cave led-off and reached on an error by Owen Miller. Jose Miranda singled to right and Carlos Correa was hit in the finger by a pitch to load up the bases. Gio Urshela plated a pair with a single to center. Gary Sanchez hit a sac fly to right and the Twins were within a pair. With two outs, Nick Gordon belted a James Karinchak for a two-run homer. This tied the game at five in a blink of an eye. Neither team put up a run in the ninth and we needed extra innings. Neither side scored a run with the ghost runner in the tenth, eleventh, or twelfth innings. The Twins found something in the thirteenth when Gio Urshela and Sandy Leon reached on singles. With onne out, Nick Gordon hit a sac fly to right, but obviously it wasn’t enough. Amed Rosario lined a run-scoring single to center to tie the game and we needed another inning cause why the fuck not? Amed Rosario sent us home in the fifteenth when Jermaine Palacios couldn’t handle a grounder, which scored a run. The Indians ended the Twins season with a win tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Josh Winder did all he could. He went 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Jovani Moran got four big outs, Emilio Pagan had four outs and allowed a run, and Jorge Lopez struck out two over 1 2/3 scoreless. Michael Fulmer had a scoreless inning and Griffin Jax did the same. Dereck Rodriguez was brilliant, but finally broke in the fifteenth. He went 3 2/3 innings dand gave up two unearned runs with two strikeouts. Gio Urshela had three hits on the night and Jose Miranda added two hits. The Twins hit 3-for-21 with runners in scoring position and only have themselves to blame. They left thirteen men on base. Tomorrow, Joe Ryan will face Cody Morris in Game 4.

VLC Student Council Election 2022: Systemic Changes, Parties, and More
By the Voice's Editorial Board
This article is part of a series covering the Student Council election.
Tumblr media
The campaign period for this year’s Student Council election is in full swing. It began last Tuesday with an announcement by the new Student Council Secretary, Aisha Abdulhafiz. The announcement revealed certain controversial changes made by principal Jeremy Cadeau-Mark to how Student Council works.
Most notably, it was announced that each grade would only have two representatives instead of three, reversing a change made by the 2020/2021 Council. Furthermore, all candidates, including those running for Councillor, would require a nomination from a staff member. These changes prompted outrage from some students, who argued that although the principal has full authority over the school, making these changes without passing an amendment to the Student Council Constitution (as was customary for such changes in past years) was a blatant breach of students’ trust by the principal. Supporters of the changes argued that despite the neglect of usual procedure, the changes would benefit the Student Council by making elections more competitive.
The original announcement did not make any mention of the Student Council debate, prompting further dissatisfaction. However, a later announcement set October 3rd as the date for the debate, with Election Day being moved to the day after.
Last year, Fatima Ansari and Shifa Syed led a coalition of Councillor candidates known as Bloc Sharkel during their successful campaing for President and Vice President. It marked the first time anything resembling a political party/faction was formed for Student Council politics. This year, the Bloc has returned under the leadership of Shifa Syed and Fatima Abowath. They faced opposition from the Chonk-Muffin-Pepper Party (CMPP), led by Leyna Needham and Daryna Dvornyak, until the CMPP unexpectedly dropped out of the race yesterday for personal reasons. As a result, their primary opposition now comes from the Student Unification Society (S.U.S.), led by Ryan Wong and Cozzette Pilkington.
Wong shocked some members of the public on Monday by claiming that last year’s Council was full of “infighting” and was “inefficient”. While some agreed with this narrative, it prompted angry responses by others former Council members, who pointed out that Wong had no previous experience on the Council or even on any committee, and that the previous Council had worked very hard and made a number of accomplishments. When asked for a statement later on, Wong said “this election seems pretty tense with a bit of drama, but I believe that all parties have acted courteously and have faced each other with dignity and respect”.
Campaigning is expected to continue throughout this week and weekend. The Voice Debate, exclusively between presidential candidates, will take place on Thursday at 3:15pm. The school-sanctioned debate for all candidates will take place on Monday at 3:15. Election Day will be held on Tuesday.

Minnesota Twins-Cleveland Indians Series Preview
9.16.22-TBA Vs. Triston McKenzie RHP (10-11) 3.05 ERA
9.17.22-Josh Winder RHP (4-4) 3.83 ERA Vs. Shane Bieber RHP (10-8) 2.91 ERA
9.17.22-Louie Varland RHP Vs. Konnor Pilkington (1-2) 4.30 ERA
9.18.22-Joe Ryan RHP (11-8) 3.83 ERA Vs. Cody Morris RHP (0-1) 2.79 ERA
9.19.22-Sonny Gray RHP (8-4) 2.91 ERA Vs. Cal Quantrill RHP (12-5) 3.51 ERA
The Twins At A Glance- The Minnesota Twins did what they needed to stay in the American League Central race. That was sweep the Royals at home, but they only gained one game in the standings on the Indians. Minnesota sits four games back and has their next five games against Cleveland, which will likely decide their fate. Luis Arraez left Wednesday’s game with a hamstring injury, but pinch-hit in Thursday’s game, which likely means he’ll be ready to start this weekend. Trevor Larnach went 1-for-4 in a rehab game for the Saints on Thursday night. Ryan Jeffers is expected to DH for the Saints on Friday. Jorge Polanco might be activated for this series and would be a welcome bat. Max Kepler has missed a few games after fouling a ball of his leg on Sunday. The Twins haven’t named a starter for Friday or for one of the doubleheader games on Saturday. Louie Varland has to start one of them and maybe Bailey Ober gets the nod in the other one. The team did put Randy Dobnak on waivers to take him off the 40-man roster because he was so bad in his rehab assignment. He will likely go unclaimed and return to St. Paul though. Carlos Correa is on fire with a .367 average, five homers and twelve RBI’s in September. Luis Arraez is hitting .340 in September. Jose Miranda and Gary Sanchez have knocked in seven runs each this month.
The Indians At A Glance- The Indians returned home and swept the Angels in a three-game series then lost a makeup game to the White Sox on Thursday afternoon. Oscar Gonzalez has been hot in September with a .353 average, four homers, and twelve RBI. Owen Miller is vying for more at-bats with a .333 average in eight games in September. The Indians offense is only averaging 3.2 runs per game this month, but the pitching is making it stand up. Cleveland out-scored Minnesota 17-11 in the series last weekend and won some close ballgames. Triston McKenzie finally had a good start against the Twins on Saturday with seven shutout innings. Shane Bieber gave up just one run over 6 1/3 innings on Sunday to clinch a series sweep. The Indians bullpen is fourth-best in the Majors with a 3.13 ERA. Sam Hentges hasn’t allowed a run over his past 7 2/3 innings. James Karinchak’s two earned run this month was against the Twins last Friday. Bryan Shaw hasn’t been strong lately by allowing seven runs over his past 6 2/3 innings.
What To Watch For- The Indians are (9-5) against the Twins in 2022. The Twins will only make two trips to Cleveland this year because the first series was postponed with the season starting late. The Twins played a five-game series in late-June and a five-game series this weekend. Triston McKenzie is (2-5) with a 5.93 ERA in eight starts against the Twins. Carlos Correa and Gio Urshela have two homers off McKenzie. Josh Winder is (1-1) with a 1.80 ERA in two starts against the Indians. Shane Bieber is (6-1) with a 3.39 ERA in fifteen games versus the Twins. Joe Ryan is (2-0) with a 1.88 ERA in four games against the Tribe. Sonny Gray is (6-3) with a 3.16 ERA in fourteen starts against Cleveland. Austin Hedges has two homers off Gray in his career. Cal Quantrill is (3-0) with a 3.54 ERA in nine games facing the Twins. Simply put the division is on the line in the American League Central with this five games. The Twins can get back in the race with a series win or better and the Indians can just about clinch with a series win.
