“This Dissolution is nothing but a killing of the moist with the dry, in fact a PUTREFACTION, and consequently turns the MATTER black.” -Splendour Solis, “Dark Sun”
The Dark Sun is one of the classic images of alchemy, signifying decay and dissolution into the earth. In multiple shots in RWBY 8.10 episode (these three examples are all notably not consecutive) the animators give us the image of Ironwood as the Dark Sun, emphasizing his plan of blowing up Mantle (reducing it to earth).
However, if you pay careful attention to the animals framing this classic image of alchemy, you’ll notice caterpillars and butterflies, classic symbols of rebirth. To live, something must die. It emphasizes not only Ironwood’s moral decay, but how twisted his plan is: to get Penny to trade herself for her friends, to die in a sense so her friends can live. However, I highly doubt Winter and Marrow, at least, are going to be just fine with his plan. They are likely to experience a rebirth, dying to what they thought was their life purpose (duty) and reborn by choosing their humanity via bonds with people.

Aight so I’ve seen some people in the FNDM complain that in the newest episode, Ruby, Weiss, and Blake aren’t doing anything and are just sitting around drinking tea. I understand why you think they’re just being lazy and stuff, but that’s not exactly the case.
Ruby, Weiss and Blake are stuck at Schnee Manir right now. You might say “oh well they can just leave, can’t they?” But they can’t.
Nora is recovering from a critical injury, so they need to make sure she’d tended to. Even worse, Penny is going bananas from the hacking (I don’t think RWBN knows about the hacking part yet that they for sure know about her weird outburst), and needs to be monitored when she wakes up. If Penny tries to leave for the vault again, they need people who can try and keep her from getting there. While I love Whitley, Willow, and Klein, they need all the help they can get tending to these two, so the three girls can’t go out and fight. Therefore, they need to find things to do to wait.
And to add onto it, I’m pretty sure everyone in the Schnee Manir has just been thoroughly traumatized. I know we’re still thinking about the whale and the bomb and all that, but RWBNP doesn’t know about all that jazz. To them, the last thing they experienced was trying to stop an extremely powerful Grimm with new, never before seen behaviors, only to learn that it’s a literal human person (well... Faunus person, but you get the point) who was at the Grimm’s core, before killing said person. That’s pretty traumatic in my opinion, and they’re likely trying to calm down and collect their thoughts.
Even more so if Ruby noticed the eyes! If Ruby actually did notice that the eyes were silver, well... she’s probably trying to contain a big freak out. I wish that they had shown her being depressed and scared, but there is a chance she’s burying it denial. She’s likely trying not to think about it, and instead think of happy things.
In the end, this is all my personal opinion, but I just wanted to give my counter argument for this situation. You’re still entitled to your own beliefs but I just wanted to share mine.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
