Doc’s been wandering alone on Empires for 20 minutes, hasn’t seen anyone, has finally discovered a structure. He sees a redstone contraption and just says “if I was Grian right now I would press this button” and then presses it. He’s seen Joel kill Scar in chat, and also that Grian knows Joel by name and is very confused. Doc is convinced this is a UHC. The button released fireworks and now Doc is looking around, worried that he has attracted attention, worried that he’ll be killed if it’s a UHC. Doc is not having a good time right now

Man Ren is practically begging the server to start a revolution. Flaunting his wealth and building with diamonds was taking too long so he decided to claim everything built in spawn and the shopping district with his head.

The funny part is I honestly think he wasn’t expecting the king thing to last this long. He expected rebellions long before now and now he’s just like. What can I do next so they rebel. I have no diamonds please remove me as king why is no one rebelling.

ty for the tag @unpredictable-probabilities! I don't usually do tag things but I'm feeling an exception today and I want to ramble lol let's GO!!

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

Right now, 51! I think i started using ao3 back in college with rvb fic lol. I've since orphaned 2 fics so I guess there wouldve been 53.

2. What's your total AO3 word count?

86,956

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Right now, mostly just Twisted Wonderland (and the occasional dndads, I still have a fic in my brain I kinda wanna write for that). Twst was kinda my comeback to wanting to write fics and has been my main inspiration for a lot of things and it's been the most fun i've had writing fics I think, and it's eventually what's gotten me to try to write my first multi chapter fic.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

hmmm I do not write much angst, and even when I do it's more hurt/comfort, bc permasads make ME permasad. I think it was my rvb fic "forgotten" - which i always forget was my first fic uploaded to ao3 LOL, back in 2015. ironic that my first wasnt reflective of the tone i usually write for. i don't wanna reread it to check [even tho my fics from back then are WAY shorter] bc im scared to face how i wrote when i was fresh outta hs lol BUT if i remember correctly/based on the summary, it was a doc/donut fic and I think it was about how after doc had disappeared from the future cube or whatever in canon and no one knew he was gone, i wrote a scene of doc getting upset with donut bc Of All People Why Didnt You Notice I Thought I Meant Something To You 😔 kdlsjfkdlsj i think it ended with doc walking off and donut being SAD and idk maybe they broke up, idr if they were 'officially dating' in the context of that fic. but um hashtag docnut for life.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

most all of my fics are happy endings with an exception of like one ^ or two lol. I don't know if i can quantify those!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

not to my face if I do lol. I don't think enough people know about me to give a shit if i do stuff they dont like

nope!!!! i dont really like smut personally and it's not the kind of genre i have story ideas for.

girl help i cannot choose. um. well first shout out again to rvb's docnut bc u will always be strong and married in my heart. and in dndads im an oakworthy truther til i die BUT for twst. twst beloved twst i am in that pitfall of i like 50000 different ships. jamiazu is the one i write and draw the most LOL and theyre def a top fave HOWEVER. god. treycater alters my brain chemistry. rookvil marriage real. adeuce beloved fool duo for life. im physically restraining myself from mentioning more KLFJDSKLFJS especially when we get into the multiship/poly web bc god we will be here all day. i can and will be enabled but this post is already long enough GOODBYE!!!!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

oooh ok well there was a dndads oakworthy thing I started like last year but pretty soon after I started it, we started seeing more of hermies forbidden other 'true' personality traits and i was like ruh roh this guy keeps pulling a fast one on me, i dont think the direction i had with this fic is fitting anymore. i had barely gotten anywhere with it and it wouldve been short anyway, but i think about what couldve been.... lololol and then for TWST umm. Hehe. Teehee even. Back during nanowrimo I used that as time to start 2 fics: kalim and the great relationship rescue, which is my current multichap fic about kalisil and jamiazu, it’s got about 3 chapters, and I’m still writing it. AND IM STILL GOING TO FINISH THAT ONE!!! but the OTHER one I started during that time and have NOT posted any of it yet was the stuff with my first twst oc, Char, and his place in my big caterella multiverse ideas lol. I’ve posted a bit about that story idea and done a lot of doodles and brianstorming for it, but I fear it would be too intimidatingly ambitious to stick to and I’m not sure writing one concrete fic is the right medium for it 🤔 plus I just don’t think many people would like it much LOL it would be very self indulgent and tapping into my soap opera brain. I feel nervous when I talk about it HAHDBFNTG so I’m not sure I could commit. But I still have what I wrote, and maybe I’ll figure out another way to go with it or maybe I’ll just wake up one day and say WHATEVER and write it anyway lol. I’ve gotten shyer again so we’ll see 🧍

16. What are your writing strengths?

umm. i do not know if it is a strength but i feel more light comedy and dialogue come more 'naturally' to me, but i do not know how well i actually can pull it off LOL also shorter, contained stories. Everything I write is a one shot, and I’m struggling on my recent attempt at a multiple chapter fic BDBFFBFNGD

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

hrhrnrngm more descriptive writing, i find im in the pitfalls of writing TOO MUCH dialogue. and i also feel like when i try to do more serious tone things it comes off as cringe or trying too hard kFDKLSHFLDSJ. no one's said that to me but yknow. fear and whatnot. also ending the story is. Hard. I feel like that’s always a weak part of my fics bc I sit there like WELL I WROTE ALL MY IDEAS HOW DO I WRAP THIS UP…. I worry my endings come off kind of half assed but I do my best lol 😔✌️

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

like are you asking if i would do it? or how i feel when it's done in fics i read? i dunno lol. i could maybe do spanish bc ive studied it a lot but i'd get nervous i think.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

on ao3 it was rvb bu teeeechnically back in my neoseeker forums days i was in there writing like, animal crossing or harvest moon or pokemon stuff. it was very bad bc i was like 10 years old LOL

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

ohoho ummmm. Well I always have fun writing jamiazu and I’ve written a LOT of those lol. I have a soft spot for The Comfort of Familiarity. That’s one of the ones hats taken me the longest to write because I was really trying hard to handle it with care, as it was a less light tone than I typically do and I was trying to explore the characters and their situation in a particular way that I really wanted to come across well with who reads it. It was hard, and I’m not sure I fully got there, but ultimately I did like it quite a a bit. on the flipside, one of my more recent fics and I think now my longest oneshot to date, Blue Raspberry Mango was VERY fun to write lol. That one’s a lot more like what I typically write, silly romcom style lmao. Cater and Idia goofing, characters bickering, friendship, me trying to sneak in as many side ships into the background for funsies, jamiazu is there, it was a good time. And that one started as a prompt suggestion which I feel like often times I end up struggling with and not delivering super well… but this one ran away from me and I had a blast lol. Idikei fixed me 😌✌️

In what way? // I think it’s time to finally give backstory as to where I knew Pearson from before Tallyho! He’s a lovely OC that belongs to my friend Juno, and before I knew what Tallyho was, back when I was still heavily into RvB, a former friend was running a tabletop game centered around the RvB and Halo universe. Bun introduced Pearson as a throwaway character, because bun was reusing a Cyberpunk character as a DMPC, and at the time of the session Juno had joined and it was a nice little callback to the campaign that had finished. After that, I didn’t really hear much about him outside of callbacks when another friend of mine brought up his Cyberpunk OC, and Juno would chime in in relation to Pearson. Then, Tallyho happened. So, I’d say my first impressions were “aw, a callback”? LOL. Now, I’m…kind of scared to talk abt him in general? I do love him to death, and I’m like…I’m unwell about Pearson, but he’s not something I talk about with Juno. Lots of personal issues and context I can’t provide, but most of all it’s because I’m a fuckin weenie and I think if she knew how unwell I was about Pearson she’d think I’m weird- (also shou if you actually read this I'm begging you to not share with Juno if you get the itch to I will actually kill you) 4: "Fake Out" - It’s 3 AM. What are you and your f/o doing at that time? Are you asleep? If you’re awake, what are you doing? // Ace doesn’t sleep because they don’t think they need it and I’m absolutely certain that Pearson isn’t staying up beyond like, ten unless he absolutely has to (see; Atom wakes him up). I think, maybe the whole face hole thing? Like. Not to get weird about my self image issues but there’s a reason the original concept for Ace was faceless. And to have him find that charming, or to have him appreciate it a little…makes my heart ache. 11: "The Kintsugi Kid (Ten Years)" - What’s one thing your f/o has learned from you? It could be a skill, a certain topic you know a lot about, anything really. And vice versa— what’s something you have learned from them? // Definitely how to smuggle things better. Making the most of the space up his sleeves, making sure things can’t fall out, etc etc- sure, he’s a grifter conman, but you can always improve! Ace has probably learned how to care about human life. They’ve seen people live, die, and everything in between for about as long as shadow has existed. It’s really hard to keep caring. Pearson managed to do it, though.

I feel like I’m weird for making it through seasons 14 and 15 only to fall off after. Idk, I enjoyed 15 well enough barring a few rough jokes early on that really didn’t land. I guess I just sat on it after and came to the conclusion that the blues and reds felt underutilized as villains? Like Temple’s great, but like all the rest don’t really do more than be really one off jokes that don’t really highlight the growth that the reds and blues have had over the years I feel. Like I came out the other side positive enough but the more I thought on the season the more I felt it’s writing missed the mark on various character plots, some real missed potential there.

The stuff I saw of 16 and 17 looked pretty cool? Whenever it filtered through my dash? But idk something about 15 killed my momentum and the neat stuff about the next few seasons got really tempting but somehow didn’t quite get me hooked back. I’m sure there are/were general rt things that have happened over the past few years that soured my drive to come back to it somewhat too.

Maybe I’ll finally go and watch 16 and 17 when I’ve got some free time someday soon, it’s not like they’re making more seasons anytime soon as far as I know.

it’s not weird, anon. i honestly thought more people did that, till i saw the actual numbers. i think the ending of 15 was… weak? it definitely had some good moments but it was the climactic finale that had to follow up 13’s finale and, like, that was never gonna happen. like, season 11 respected that it wasn’t going to hit the highs of season 10 in terms of, like, big epic drama, so it kept its stakes relatively low. but because the climax’s stakes are so much higher than the rest of the season’s stakes were while still having a good ramp up to them, it still feels very dramatic. it doesn’t stack up to 10’s climax but it’s not trying to. 15 on the other hand was desperately trying to top 13’s climax and it just. it didn’t stand a chance. the ramp up wasn’t horrible but it also wasn’t great and the stakes shot to the fucking MOON (and will just get higher from here). i think i had more to say but i lost it ANYWAY i totally get why someone would fall off after 15.

you’re SO fucking right about the blues and reds i literally. i am literally trying to rework them into my own horrible little men bc i like the concept of them A LOT but they’re executed so fucking bad in canon. i don’t know if you’ve read this post of mine but i talk more about my problems with the blues and reds there

as for continuing to watch. i think 17 is genuinely a good piece of fiction. not a GREAT piece of fiction, but given what it was handed it did a pretty solid job. “solid” is really the word i would use to describe 17. it’s a solid season of red vs blue.

16, however, is a hot fucking mess. i like 16 bc i LOVE hot messes and i have big “i can fix him” energy towards stuff like 16 but i can definitely understand why people think it’s the worst season of rvb. would say it’s my third least favorite. honestly if you (or anyone else) wanted i could let you know what parts to skip bc quite a few just offer absolutely no narrative, character or comedic value whatsoever.

Btw I really reccomend the movie Do Revenge. I usually find netflix movies aimed at gen z cringey but honestly it was really good. It really has that feel of "early 2000s high school flick" while still having its modernity, and they did a good job of criticising overly performative fake progressiveness without slipping into bigotry, which is something I feel a lot of gen z aimed media struggles with

It was also just really enjoyable and funny, there was some feel good moments and also a GREAT plot twist that creates a nice little bit of drama and heartbreak towards the end of the movie

The music was fantastic, I loved the opening with a Hayley Kiyoko song, considering one of the main characters is queer, it was a nice touch to open with that. Brutal by Olivia rodrigo was also a great choice, it really fit the movie's vibes. I was genuinely tearing up at the montage with with Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish. And finally, Bitch By Meredith brooks was a great song to finish up with, "im your hell, im your dream, im nothing in between" is really fitting for the relationship between Drea and Eleanor

Hi hello I caught up on the last few chapters of TLRH and I have big time Sampson brainrot. I am currently rotating him in my brain at 200 mph. He's literally my favorite character in ur fic atm lol I love literally everything about him. The last chapter tho has death flags tho and If Sampson dies I will NEVER recover (still haven't recovered from striker n relay). I swear he deserves a fucking break. Like ik he's done a lot of bad shit but also can he please get some recognition for some of the good stuff he's done?? Please??? I'm begging,,, Sampson is just. Ugh is poor little meow meow the right way to describe him??? I love him but ngl he has pathetic wet cat vibes and I mean that in the BEST way. Also I fucking love sampsons design to bits, what armor does he use?? Ik his helmet is Deadeye but idk abt the rest :o also I love how you use a shit ton of halo lore in TLRH bc honestly I love it when fics mash up rvb and halo more. Ooh ok five things that make me happy.

My friends I got from this year. I've always had a slight FOMO and a little bit of an imposter syndrome in relation to friends. This is defininetly been actually nice for me, I actually haven't felt anything related to an imposter syndrome this year since I left for university. So I'm really happy to have made the friends I did.

Editing. Editing has always been a form of art that I love to do. I'm still on the newer side of things (like I'm about to hit 5 years now). I've actually made insta moots with editors that I like looked up to. One of them I even got slightly close to and did a lil animal crossing prom thing in a discord with them which was insane. I mean it's crazy when these people you've watched make edits and aspire to make edit slike them, suddenly become mutuals with you on instagram. I started on insta and now I'm on tt. I started with RvB and I went back to RvB after the era we do not talk about but I'm also doing f1 and fe edits.

Motorsports. I've always been a sports jumper. I started with MLB then went to NBA and then NFL. I like to say that the more I get into a sport is based on the funny videos of them. MLB is obvious, I've seen all the old funny videos that I could tell you what happens in the clips. I've seen so many that I've seen so many repeat clips. NBA was more Luka for some reason, I think I liked his trick shot stuff. There isn't a lot of funny moments without involving someone in the negative light, which is different from MLB. Which I loved MLB funny moments that occured between the two teams. And then NFL just happened somehow with some funny things but not a lot. And then I found motorsports through a Brocedes edit. And I just fell in love through the funny moments. My parents sometimes ask me, how do I know so much f1 stuff, and I say it's because I consumed a lot of videos. Which I did, but majority were a funny complimation. And then suddenly formulawah made a guide to formula e, and there were quips in there that made me interested in watching fe. And suddenly now I'm watching all the lil funny montages they have up on the fe channels. And so yeah, f1 and fe make me happy.

Gaming. I play a lot of different genres of games (OXENFREE is my favorite totally recommend try playing it AAAAAAAA I could go on a whole ramble about this). Right now I have a fixation on Stardew Valley (especially with the new update) so I'm gonna binge play that. But I just love gaming, especially games with character designs and stories). And gaming just makes me happy.

Red vs Blue. It's like slightly also making me sad because it's ending (also everything Project Freelancer makes me sad (THERE IS LITERALLY A SONG THATS KINDA HAPPY AND VIBES ARE GOOD CALLED "We'll be coming back" BUT I GET SAD EVERYTIME BC SOMEONE ONCE COMPARED IT TO WASH AND THE FREELANCERS AND I JUST SCREAM) ahem anyways, yeah it can also make me sad). But it also makes me laugh a lot, and I love the characters dearly. Even if I scream in frustration when a fic on ao3 may not update in a month (bc the fandom is like half dead there ngl and that usually means discontinued sometimes). But I love Red vs Blue so much. I bought the fanbook, I bought some like slap bracelets. I just love it and it makes me happy. I could literally anaylyze every single character.

and here it is: the grand rvb/wof au plot ! bc the last post was a little jumbled i wanted to make a sort of straight-forward timeline including all the necessary plot points. things are a bit spaced out at the start but get clustered towards the end. under the cut I’m also going to include some general info about Wings of Fire for those who have never read the books but are still interested in the lore of this au!

excuse the weird format, I didn’t really know how else to capture it

so! wof stuff! (this will contain a few spoilers abt the series so be warned)

dragons in wings of fire are divided into a bunch of different tribes on a continent called pyrrhia. the tribes and their territories were determined after an event called the scorching which was basically an event where all the dragons burnt human civilisation to the ground and became the dominant species on the continent

this series is set A.S. (after-scorching) around the year 2400. the canon wof series is set around the year 5000, they exist in the same universe just like, really far apart

dragon society is about equivalent to the medieval times, they’re intelligent and understand some things but aren’t hugely scientifically advanced

instead of science, however, they have magic. very, very rarely (like once or twice in a generation) an animus dragon will be born, they have magical abilities but it’s believed that the overuse of their powers turns them evil (it’s actually just the power going to their head bc there literally aren’t any limits to animus power, they can do whatever the fuck they want). for reference, this au is set a few hundred years before a prequel to wof in which it was stated that skywings kill their animus dragons as babies to prevent them from going insane and i’m making this apart of my rvb/wof au

speaking of babies, dragons are considered to be fully mature/adults at around the age of 7-10. they age and grow rapidly for the first 7/8 years of their life and then slow down after that but never stop growing. dragons can naturally live up to around 150 years but most are often killed before then

the killing is often done by other dragons. the tribes aren’t always at war but there’s a lot of nationalism(?) (tribe-ism?) that means dragons have a general aloofness or dislike towards dragons in different tribes. in this au there are no major wars going on but there’s a little bit of hostility between nightwings and icewings, and the seawings and skywings. hybrids aren’t as taboo as the canon wof series but they’re still fairly uncommon

Why you should watch RWBY

TL;DR:

Summary: RWBY is an epic fantasy with themes like found family, the struggle to remain hopeful, the younger generation growing up, villain redemption, and systemic evils.

Strengths: RWBY has unique and memorable characters. The show is smart. It has excellent cinematography and animation. It has representation. It tackles hard topics. It’s got incredible music and it’s free on RT’s website.

Weaknesses: RWBY has some early growing pains, specifically volume 2’s finale, as well as budget and polish. Later on, volume 4 is weaker than the rest. Volume 8's finale is extremely distressing for a lot of viewers (and we haven't seen the follow up to those events yet). The fandom can be bad at times.

Misinformation: The early volumes being bad, the racism plot line, and the animation (not the same as “budget and polish”) are not as bad as you may have heard from YouTube.

(I did my best to make this spoiler-free. When there are spoilers, they’re worded ambiguously enough that someone new to the show would never guess what’s going to happen just by reading this.)

What to expect

The world of Remnant is filled with monsters called the creatures of Grimm. Warriors called Huntsmen and Huntresses defend humanity. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang go to school to become the next generation of heroes. Together they make Team RWBY (pronounced, “Ruby”)! Joining them is team JNPR (“Juniper”), made up of Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren. But evils even more dangerous than the Grimm are ready to make their move, and school quickly becomes an afterthought…

(I mention these next two topics specifically bc they can immediately turn someone away based on bad expectations.) There is a fantasy school setting, but RWBY is not a show about school. School topics are not a dominant idea: it seems to resemble a setting like Harry Potter, but the actual focus of the show rarely touches on things like classes or homework or tests, and we quickly move on. There is romance and it has a role in the plot, but RWBY is not a romance show. On the scale of romance in FMAB to She-Ra, RWBY falls somewhere in the middle.

What is RWBY about, then? RWBY is like an epic fantasy or high fantasy, despite first appearances. Perhaps not every genre convention is followed, but at its core, RWBY is about an epic struggle of good and evil.

RWBY contains themes such as found family, the struggle to remain hopeful, the younger generation growing up, villain redemption, and systemic evils.

Strengths of the show

The characters are unique and memorable. One of the cool things is that they all draw inspiration from a real life fairy tale, myth, or something else. They designs are all top notch. One character who died with extremely little screen time even got so much fandom love, they included the character in a mid-hiatus short later. The characters have unique weapons, too; in the world of Remnant, a weapon is an extension of ones’ soul, and they reflect the variety of their owners. They’re also just plain cool; Monty was famous for following the “Rule of Cool.” And their individual stories are all compelling and interesting.

The show is smart. As a fandom, we generally pick up on the narrative hints the creators are dropping. And our predictions usually come true, but not in a way that makes the show predictable and boring. We very rarely guess exactly what will happen, but we have some similar idea of it. It’s just excellent foreshadowing.

RWBY also likes to play with tropes, as an extension of this. Often it will challenge them, or subvert expectations. In other cases, RWBY uses tropes to avoid showing us what we already know will happen. This occurs in both characters and plot. For example…

SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR VOLUME ONE FOR THE REST OF THIS PARAGRAPH: Jaune’s entire character arc is about trying to be the anime protagonist, and learning that he doesn’t have to do things alone, and it’s ok to be a support main. The show sets up the narrative in a way that looks like, oh of course the direction it will go is him becoming the main character, but then it destroys toxic masculinity instead.

Our characters are smart, too. Plot-induced stupidity generally doesn’t happen. (A few big mistakes or errors in this regard aren’t actually the fault of the narrative, either, but animation and miscommunication and failure to execute. And those aren’t common.) It goes beyond just “not being dumb,” however. The villains’ plans are incredibly clever, and our heroes sometimes even guess at the usual “plot twists.”

The cinematography is just incredible. There are numerous freeze frames with extreme attention to detail that reveal character motivations or arcs or foreshadowing, there are many effective cuts and moving parts, there are soooo many parallels and callbacks, and visual cues such as lighting and color all are used appropriately to convey emotion and assist the narrative. It is one of the biggest overlooked strengths of the show, imo, simply because a lot of people in the fandom don’t notice these things as much for whatever reason, or else don’t give as much praise about them.

The animation is extremely good as well. Budget issues and technology issues aside (which means a lack of polish), the actual animation? The fight choreography, and all the other parts of animation that aren’t just “expensive CGI” are all wonderful. You can have very shiny, polished turds after all, and RWBY is like the opposite: not very polished, especially early on, but very well animated. All the trailers, volume 1 episode 8, the volume 1 finale, the volume 2 penultimate episode, and basically everything else hold up extremely well even today. If anything, the worst fight animation was in volumes 4 and 5 because of Maya growing pains, and those are an example of being more polished, but not necessarily better animated. Animation of faces has always been good, animation of characters has always felt lively. Aside from a few small actual hiccups (that one person running across rooftops for instance), it’s well done.

There are LGBTQ+ characters. The treatment of one of the recent trans characters, in volume 8, was nothing short of amazing. They worked with a VA who was trans. The moment of canon confirmation was important to the character for backstory, because of course that affects the character’s life, but not the only important thing about the character. The representation is not in-your-face or pandering. And there is a split of representation among the main cast and the minor characters, with promises of more to come (notably they’ve said they’re working on more mlm for future volumes, too).

RWBY is not afraid to tackle hard topics. It deals with things like mental illness, systematic racism, and cycles of abuse. It’s not because the show is trying to earn “gritty and dark” points, it’s because those are some of the topics that real people have to struggle with as well. And the show handles most or all of them very well, in a way that shows respect and an honest attempt to depict these things as best they can. (NOTE ABOUT VOLUME 8: THERE IS A VERY DIFFUCLT CONVERSATION CURRENTLY HAPPENING. I am on the side of, let’s wait and see what happens next because the story isn’t over, so we haven’t really seen the fall out. But I understand why this paragraph feels really difficult to agree with if you've seen the volume 8 finale. I trust the track record of the rest of the show, personally.)

As an example, the show has a theme that villains are rarely evil just because. A lot of villains choose to do bad things because they were hurt in some way. Some lived in poverty; some were hurt by racism; many of them are victims of abuse. But the show doesn’t make excuses for them. It’s possible to be both sympathetic and still choose evil over and over again (that’s called tragic). The ones who eventually do try to do good again are not always forgiven, either.

The music is amazing. I can probably count on my hands the number of times I’ve heard someone say otherwise, which is astonishing when you consider this fandom.

It’s also free on RT’s website. (A paid, “FIRST” subscription removes ads and lets you see new episodes one week early, but they all eventually release for free.)

Weaknesses of the show

Early volumes’ growing pains exist, much like most or all other shows. (Even some of the greatest were not immune to this, like ATLA.) In this case, however, it’s a little bit rougher. A large reason why is that this was kind of the first big thing from RT to ever come out. If you remember back almost a decade ago, their only other big thing at the time was RvB, which was machinima. They pretty much started from scratch with everything, from assets to VAs to animation to writing. Imagine if a random twitch streamer, like Ninja (idk who’s popular these days) said one day, “OK let me just direct something that’s intended to be the next great movie series of all time, like Star Wars, with a $4 bill and an iPhone camera.” Then went out and actually made something. Of course it would be rough…but then it turns out the movie is actually really good. And then you get to watch over the next several years as everything gets better and better until it’s honest-to-god comparable to the MCU. That’s kind of what happened with RWBY.

One specific growing pain was the volume 2 finale. Pretty much everything else up until that point, I love about the show. But the finale just fails to deliver on the build up of tension from other episodes. Some of it is because of later plot developments that we didn’t know at the time; some of it is because of just not great writing; some of it is because of just not great animation; and yes, some of it is budget. Regardless, it’s a low point for the show.

Speaking of, the budget for the early volumes is super small. The infamous volume one shadow people, the infamous person jumping across the rooftops in volume two, and just production quality isn’t high compared to a major release from some established studio. These are real weaknesses of the show that for some people, make it unwatchable, and if that’s you, that’s ok.

One last weakness of the show, the screen time per episode, especially early on, is NOT a full 20 minutes like you may expect of an anime (or anime-inspired-western-media, for those of you who will die on the “RWBY is not an anime” hill). This is a trend that has stuck with the show, a shorter run time per episode, for generally the entire lifetime. On one hand, it means it’s a little less daunting to catch up or rewatch than the number of episodes might imply. On the other, early on, some episodes have a little weird pacing. It also means the writing had to adjust for this, so while RWBY got really good at telling a story within a shorter amount of time, there’s also challenges with that too. Perhaps one of the notable ones is the pacing, with slower moments sometimes feeling like it takes up too much screen time, or not enough. Volume 4 was a particular struggle for the crew, both because they switched animation engines and also for the story.

Common complaints that I don’t agree with

I don’t agree that the early volumes were actually bad overall. Growing pains, yes, but not bad. I attribute that complaint to overly focusing on one character’s storyline, back when it wasn’t clear there was so much more to come and before people realized the show would challenge the tropes instead of falling into them. It’s pretty much just volume 1 when people say this anyway, most of them I’ve heard admit that volume 2 was a lot better (except the finale) and almost everyone loves volume 3. And looking back on it, I do think volume 1 holds up.

Tying into this, the racism plot line is another common complaint. I don’t think it’s actually executed quite that badly. I think it makes sense for there to be regional differences in the amount of racism we see, it just so happened that we only saw a very small and isolated environment, Beacon, for much of the early volumes. (Incidentally, that’s actually similar the environment I myself grew up in.) It’s not perfect, though. But there’s no doubt that the later volumes do a better job portraying this. Again, I attribute it mostly to people not knowing how long the show would run for at the time, so of course if that’s all we saw, it would’ve been bad. But it’s not. I have a lot of respect for Miles and Kerry for even attempting to handle the racism topic in the first place. And for the faults that DO exist in this plot line, I credit them for learning and growing past that too, and doing better in later volumes.

The animation is not bad. I’ve already touched on that earlier, but people confuse “budget and polish” with “animation.” Give me RWBY any day over Michael Bay’s Transformers: no matter how much polish those robots have, they’re still a confusing mess to try and follow. And the polish isn’t even an issue once we get past the growing pains of Maya and get a bigger budget, because wow does this show look good now.

Between these three complaints I hear about often, I think those are the biggest ones. And they’re all generally done in bad faith, based not on just those but on other more provocative statements people also make with them. That’s part of my issue with the fandom, specifically the vocal but small parts of the fandom, because they’re just repeating these things from early days that aren’t true. But YouTubers gotta get those rage and hate clicks somehow, right? Unfortunately it discredits the show a lot and influences other people’s opinions into not giving it a fair chance, because it’s become a narrative of “RWBY IS BAD” when they all won’t shut up about it. So yeah, fandom can be bad, join at your own discretion. (Of course, all fandoms have annoying parts, and my interactions with the fandom have been good overall, otherwise.)

Onto other complaints, some say the cast is bloated. I don’t agree, but I don’t think this one is in bad faith. I think we get the important characters as much screen time as we can, and the minor characters don’t actually detract from that; one of the differences between good minor characters and bad ones, is that bad ones take up too much time. RWBY has a ton of characters but many of the minor ones don’t actually take up too much time. So it appears bloated, but actually I don’t think it is.

Finally, a small word on the no-no topics. Adam, and Monty. Adam is like the champion of the Monty topic. Which essentially boils down to “Miles and Kerry are ruining Monty’s vision for the show.” Toxic fandom is truly awful and I have no respect for anyone who says anything like that. Shame on all of you. This isn’t really anything negative about the show, but the fandom, and tbf all fandoms have toxic parts. But toxic fandom can be a real and valid reason to not watch a show. Thankfully they seem fewer in number these days, but I think they’ve evolved into hiding behind other characters or topics, so you know. Beware. Again, it's not too hard to avoid them or block them, and my interactions otherwise with most fans have been good.

Do you think if a fan reasonably listed their dislikes and concerns with rvb zero, Fiona, Torrian, or literally anyone else would still come back and light a fire under them? (fiona’s comments have made me a bit annoyed but it’s understandable since some of the comments from fans have been stupid)

Because it’s not about “if it’s not your thing, sorry, you don’t have to watch it. It’s for other people!” It’s about the actual issues in the show that I feel like...the writers aren’t recognizing? And this isn’t me hating on the show really, I’m just confused if they notice the flaws?

This is probably turning into a long post so I apologize in advance, and if it does turn into some sort of hate-rant, I apologize for that too, but I’m mostly just letting my thoughts out on things I’ve noticed that aren’t sitting well with me—and SPOILERS for the new episode if you aren’t a first member, but-

I think I’m allowed to get angry that they killed Tucker. Because even if it’s a fake out and they’re pulling another season 12 where we all thought he was gonna die after Felix stabbed him (because the situation was actually taken seriously and the atmosphere is what assisted the blow in comparison to rvb0’s not-so-great pacing skills) EVEN if it’s a fake out, it’s a shitty thing to do. I don’t care if it comes down to “oh, well Jason was the only one of the OG cast available and bringing back Tucker makes sense because of his weapon” you’re going to 1.) bring back a beloved character we’ve had for 17 years. 2.) KILL said character 3.) probably do it for dramatics and he’ll actually be okay because why would you kill off a memorable character 4.) god, not to mention, and this could just be me being extra bitter, but you killed him off in such a boring way? I know the guy is an idiot, a sim trooper thrown into a war he was never apart of with no fighting skills at all, but it’s Tucker. Make the guy go out in style.

I said the same thing about Carolina and how they’re doing her a disservice. Even though she had began to grow annoying to me in previous seasons (shisno paradox to be exact), I was still ecstatic to see her just like anyone else! Her and Wash! And I’m NOT her creator and I’m NOT someone who understands her character to the point where I feel like I have a right to start telling the writers they’re portraying her wrong, but I truly feel like Carolina is not in character at all. I think the constant usage of Wash’s first name is unusual (she even went as far as to CORRECT One??? Wash’s name is a personal thing and throwing it around makes me feel like he isn’t even worthy of respect at this point. I sincerely hope they aren’t using the first name basis thing as an excuse to say oh!! Look at how close her and Wash are!), the completely? normal?? private conversations she’s been having with specifically One (I’m unsure if it’s because Carolina is working with people who aren’t actually idiots this time around so the setting makes her more comfortable, but I don’t see Carolina as an advice-giver or a pep-talker. Maybe I’m so used to hardcore freelancer Lina that I’m brainwashed but these are really throwing me off), and finally— her reaction to Tucker’s death, and excuse me haha, is a fucking joke.

I’m not elaborating on that. I feel like it should be self-explanatory, to be honest. I could even say her reaction sums up MY reaction, but I’m hoping there might be some aftermath stuff, y’know? Then again, I’m praying he’s not dead because, again, what the actual hell?

But aside from me being annoyed by little writing things I’ve noticed, I’m really enjoying the animation and I’m totally into the characters, but who hasn’t said that? That seems to be the only good thing you hear after long posts that speak negatively of the show. I appreciate the enthusiasm and I completely respect others who enjoy it for what it is! I’m also trying to enjoy it from the perspective of a new fan or even someone who just LOVES rvb for what it is (because HEY any rvb satisfies me, I freakin adored the shisno paradox even if it’s hated on for its writing) buuuut the flaws keeps standing out to me whether it’s the unusually fast pacing, the awkward and very over exaggerated movements (because if we’re being honest, what human moves like this? Am I too rude to ask if we can just have someone speaking and bobbing their head but still have them animated like in PFL?), the delivery of lines (meh, sometimes it’s cheesy, sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s just too fast!), and the unbelievable amount of “surprising” info I’m given without a cool plot twist or SOMETHING to make me actually give a crap about the characters lives and backstories.

Yeah, it’s probably turned into a hate-rant, haha. But I’m legit curious if Fiona is defending Torrian and hyping up the show simply bc it’s a first-time thing! Great! She’s happy and excited and so proud of the thing they’ve created, who wouldn’t be, but it’s severely disappointing to see something so awesome have so many problems that are making it an unenjoyable experience for me. And maybe that’s just me being someone who criticizes too much...which is ironic considering I’ll praise every episode of rvb because I’m being fed content, I’ll praise ANYTHING rvb RT gives me bc I’m so desperate, but rvb0 is uhhhh it’s not cutting it for me unfortuantely.

I love lots of things about the show and I still think the cast thing with Carolina was funny :) so sorry if I come off as mean because I’m really trying to not let my love for old rvb get in the way, but I dunno, maybe I really cant accept something new? Or maybe I’m just sad something with potential isn’t doing so great :(
