A meme created after 13 Ukrainian border guards stationed on the Black Sea's Snake Island said "go f*ck yourself" to a Russian warship demanding their surrender Thursday. The guards were killed, according to local reports.

“This is a Russian warship. I propose you lay down arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed & unnecessary victims. Otherwise, you’ll be bombed.”

Zmiinyi defenders: “Russian warship, go fuck yourself.”

Later in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the guards had “died heroically” defending the island, also known as Zmiinyi, according to a report in Ukrayinska Pravda.

“On our Snake Island, defending it to the last, all the border guards died heroically,” Zelenskyy said. “But they did not give in. All of them will be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously. Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine.”

Can you tell me where your backdrop image comes from and what's it say? Is that in Ukraine? is that a photo of drones? Please explain. I can't find any English sources about it.

It's a "drone show" in Kyiv that the Ukrainian side put on for Russians after they attacked Ukraine. Text is quoting Ukrainian boarder guards who died defending their country on the Island Zmeinyy in the Black Sea. Russian warship gave them the ultimatum to surrender or they would be killed. The guards' last words were "Russian warship, go f*ck yourself".

I sang this song in 2015 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and I remember that I really wanted to make a speech before my performance. I wanted to say something about putin being a monster and russia being evil and fucked up. I didn't say anything - I was afraid the audience would protest or be aggressive. Now, when russia is bombing my Kharkiv, when my parents haven't showered there for several days because it is too scary to leave the bomb shelter, when I haven't talked to my grandparents (both of them survived WW2) because there is no electricity - now I am sure no one in the audience would protest me saying: russian warship, go f-ck yourself!

Russia attacks Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, bombards Snake Island overnight

Russian tactical aviation fired on July 30 two air bombs at Ukraine’s Snake Island, located 35 kilometers from the mainland of Odesa Oblast, Southern Operational Command reported.

This marks Russia’s third attack on Snake Island over the last month, the military added without providing further details.  

Russian troops also attacked agricultural enterprises in the Kherson Oblast and Kryvyi Rih district of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with Shahed-136 kamikaze drones overnight, the military said. The attack was launched from the eastern coast of the Azov Sea.

According to the report, all four drones were destroyed.

The debris fell on the territory of one of the agricultural enterprises causing a fire and damaging a warehouse, Southern Operational Command said.

There were no casualties, the military added.

Snake Island was captured by Russian forces at the onset of the full-scale invasion due to its strategic importance.

On Feb. 24, 2022, two Russian warships attacked the island and told the Ukrainian border guards to surrender. One of the Ukrainian border guards famously responded, "Russian warship, go f•ck yourself," a phrase which became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.

Occupying Snake Island effectively allowed Russian forces to launch a blockade of Odesa's Black Sea ports and direct missile attacks against Ukraine.

On April 14, 2022, Ukraine successfully sunk the Mosvka, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Russian forces withdrew from Snake Island later that June.

President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Snake Island to mark 500 days of Russia's full-scale war earlier this month.

In a video shot from the island, Zelensky promised that Ukraine would reclaim every part of its territory currently occupied by Russia.
