Fare thee well to Rudolph Isley, co-founder of R&B legends The Isley Brothers.
"The Isley Brothers didn’t pioneer styles so much as crystallize their essences, on singles that turned into enduring classics."

Throwback: R.I.P. Rudolph Isley
Throwback: R.I.P. Rudolph Isley @isleybrothers
I was working on the previous post when I learned that The Isley Brothers‘ Rudolph Isley died. He was 84. The Isley Brothers were — and are — one of the most important and legendary R&B/soul outfits to ever do it. They’ve gone through several distinct periods: They began as a gospel group before making a name for themselves performing R&B in the mid 50s. By the early 70s, they morphed into a funk…

In Memoriam: Rudolph Isley (1939 - 2023)
Rudolph Bernard Isley (April 1, 1939 – October 11, 2023) was an American singer-songwriter and one of the founding members of The Isley Brothers. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Rudy began singing in church at a young age. By his teen years, he was singing as member of The Isley Brothers with Kelly, Ronnie and Vernon. In 1957, following Vernon’s death, the remaining three elder Isleys moved…

Isley Brothers Co-founder Rudolph Isley Dies at 84
Rudolph Isley, who co-founded the Isley Brothers with his siblings in 1955, has died.
Isley was 84; no cause was given.
“Our hearts are heavy as we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Rudolph Isley,” band co-founder Ronald Isley and Ernie Isley, who joined in 1969, said in a statement.
“ … Remember to hold your loved ones close. We will miss our brother but we know he’s in a better place.”
The band, which also included the late O’Kelly, Vernon and Marvin Isley at various points, scored hits across several decades, including “Shout,” “Twist and Shout,” “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” “It’s Your Thing” and “That Lady.”
“The (Isley Brothers) navigated every cultural shift with skill, responding to emerging styles and trends with new sounds and always another hit,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted the group in 1992, said in a remembrance.
Rudolph Isley left the band in 1989 to become a preacher, leaving Ronald and Ernie to carry on. They released their most-recent album in 2002 and continue to tour.
“May Rudolph Isley rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

Celebrating Rudolph Isley: The Iconic Style and Quiet Coolness of an Isley Brother
(October 14, 2023).  You might remember Rudolph Isley for those outrageous but period-appropriate outfits he wore on his band’s 1970s album covers. Expensive-looking furs, heavily studded and sometimes very shiny matching pant-shirt combos, open-button shirts revealing a tuft of chest hair accessorized by heavy gold chains (back when only he and Isaac Hayes could be so bold, and long before…
