Isley Brothers Co-founder Rudolph Isley Dies at 84
Rudolph Isley, who co-founded the Isley Brothers with his siblings in 1955, has died.
Isley was 84; no cause was given.
“Our hearts are heavy as we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Rudolph Isley,” band co-founder Ronald Isley and Ernie Isley, who joined in 1969, said in a statement.
“ … Remember to hold your loved ones close. We will miss our brother but we know he’s in a better place.”
The band, which also included the late O’Kelly, Vernon and Marvin Isley at various points, scored hits across several decades, including “Shout,” “Twist and Shout,” “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” “It’s Your Thing” and “That Lady.”
“The (Isley Brothers) navigated every cultural shift with skill, responding to emerging styles and trends with new sounds and always another hit,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted the group in 1992, said in a remembrance.
Rudolph Isley left the band in 1989 to become a preacher, leaving Ronald and Ernie to carry on. They released their most-recent album in 2002 and continue to tour.
“May Rudolph Isley rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.

When Ernie Isley first picked up the guitar as a teenager, it was to learn Jose Feliciano’s acoustic version of the Doors’ “Light My Fire” — and, of course, one-time Isley Brothers guitarist Jimi Hendrix had lived with the family when Ernie was an adolescent. So he was ready for the spotlight when he took his soaring solo on “That Lady,” in 1973, done in a single take. ”I plugged in, and when I hit the very first note on the ‘That Lady’ rhythm track, it went from black-and-white to 3D Technicolor,” he recalled. “It was astounding.” The song had an immediate, outsized impact on the Isleys’ sound — his long solos were a feature of both the band’s classic Seventies albums and their live shows — and his irradiated, ecstatic fuzztone remains a marker of a halcyon era.—M.M.
Key Tracks: “That Lady,” “Voyage to Atlantis”

Tonight’s random record shelf pull…
The Isley Brothers “The Brothers: Isley” 1969
Appropriate due to the death of Rudolph Isley earlier in the week. Ernie Isley is playing guitar but not an official member yet so he didn’t get hang out in robes with his brothers. They get really funky here and keep the ballads to a minimum. A very enjoyable listen.
As a bonus here’s someone critiquing the Isley’s clothing choices on their albums…
