This is a very nice little documentary, especially if you’re a ska-rocksteady-reggae nerd like me.
There are interviews with lots of old reggae gods, several of whom are no longer with us five years later (Toots, Lee Perry, Bunny Lee).
Dandy Livingstone, aged 74, features throughout because he's so good to listen to. He has a beautiful speaking voice, is very composed and happy to share memories. At one point, he sits down at his keyboard and sings a bit of 'A Message to You, Rudy', and it's just wonderful.
There are dramatizations of Jamaicans in London in the 60s and 70s that are low key and not jarring or cringey like you might expect.
'If that shuffle not in the music, it's not reggae' - Bunny Lee

Today’s random record shelf pull…
“Rudeboy: The Trojan Records Story” 2018
A soundtrack to a fantastic film about the legendary UK record label that specializes in Jamaican music. While I have most of these songs elsewhere this album really functions not only as a great soundtrack but also as a great introduction to the label and the genre. Some of my favorite music is in these grooves. And yes, I loved the film too!

Back by popular ‘BK’ demand, Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records -- the UK music imprint from yesteryear, is all the buzz from its SOLD OUT debut @Brooklyn Museum last month (Sept 26). This rounds, Tuesday, Oct. 15 in another cool neighborhood, Williamsburg @Nitehawk Cinema, there’s ONLY 1 showing at 7:30p w/an after-party too, not to be missed! If your schedule somehow conflicts w/this, the entire film is available through Breaker, Oct. 15.
Tumblr media
Here’s the scoop -- whether you’re into the punk scene or the reggae scene of the earlier foundational years (1960s/1970s), this film traces the roots of Trojan Records while exploring all the civil rights, societal blights, the massive immigration to Great Britain from the Caribbean (w/a focus of course on Jamaicans + rocksteady/reggae music) n’ its impact of the cultural contribution it gave to eventually breathe life forms into so many other genres such as UK Pop/Soul, Punk Rock, Drum n’ Bass, Jungle, Garage and more.
youtube
A film by Nicolas Jack Davies, the format is quite interesting as it explicitly documents -- documentary style, real footage of the 1960s n’ beyond in the UK, yet tells the story of Trojan Records via actors in a fictional replica that brings to life an era that most avid music lovers sure wish they’d experienced if they’re just that young, or can experience again if one had the privilege of being groomed by this crucial time.
Tumblr media
What will always sink deep into the emotions of the viewer, is how two different worlds -- white Brit-born youth and black Caribbean-born immigrants, came into unification for the love of rebelling against society through this mostly reggae n’ rocksteady music. Trojan Records’ vision, roster of artists from Jamaica n’ their platform which literally gave birth to the new UK then, should always be saluted for playing such an important role.

BMG is backing a new Lewis Capaldi documentary. Do you think they are doing the same for the one Louis is making?
https://bmg.com/de/news/BMG-partners-with-Pulse-Quickfire-Films-Lewis-Capaldi-for-new-documentary-film.html
Very interesting!
BMG has partnered with Pulse and Quickfire Films and multi-Platinum, two-time BRIT Award-winning, Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi for his debut feature-length documentary film.
BMG is the long-time music publisher of Capaldi’s songs including his 2019 breakthrough hit ‘Someone You Loved’ which topped the UK Official Singles chart for seven weeks, and held the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. Capaldi’s debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent is also a critical and commercial smash and has amassed over 15 billion streams worldwide.
Filmed over a five-year period, the film by BAFTA-winning director Joe Pearlman (Bros: After The Screaming Stops) captures the 24-year-old singer-songwriter’s defining year as he becomes one of the biggest stars on the planet, delivering an intimate portrait of his unique character, hopes, and fears in his own words.
Alistair Norbury, President Repertoire & Marketing BMG UK, said, ”We are delighted to help bring this project to life with Lewis and of course Pulse and Quickfire Films. As well as a great songwriter and musician, Lewis is a compelling character who has a genuine and deep connection with fans. This release further demonstrates our commitment to support artists across every service area from records to publishing, film to books, neighboring rights and increasingly artist management and live too.”
Independent Entertainment will be representing the production at the forthcoming Cannes Virtual Film Market.
The documentary is the latest project in BMG’s fast-growing line of music-related films and television projects including the critically acclaimed David Crosby: Remember My Name; the Joan Jett documentary, Bad Reputation; Mavericks: The Legendary Promoters of Rock, a film about legendary concert promoters and the early days of the live music business; Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Record, Echo In The Canyon, one of the top-grossing documentaries of 2019; and the forthcoming They All Came Out To Montreux, a definitive three-part documentary series celebrating the history of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
I think the trend of everyone jumping on to documentaries has produced some uneven results. As much as I want to see Louis, it feels a little premature to see a documentary on someone who doesn’t have a long solo music history (I feel the same way about Lewis Capaldi, frankly). I know that these documentaries are meant to promote and sell the artist, but a bland/ boring film with an insufficient character arc, or no new information, sort of backfires.

Rudeboy, The Story Of Trojan Records - a soundtrack and documentary package. Trojan Records is responsible for bringing the very beginnings of Reggae music, as it evolved out of ska and rocksteady. A short lives label from 1968-1975, it helped launch the genre into the spotlight, however briefly. The soundtrack is a few of the largest hits to come out. A very interesting (but only surface level) look into the label and genre. (January 2021, BMG) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKvNK34ryku/?igshid=1u8xfdlxqwa8j

Ugyan elcsépelt, de szívmelengítő az üzenete arról a pár évről, amikor a zene összehozott különböző bőrszínű embereket. Jópofa a jelenetek újra játszása, meg amúgy is tele van szerethető öregemberekkel, akik cuki jamaikai akcentussal beszélnek. A zenék pedig hatalaasak. Derrick Morgan pedig szintén nagy igazságot mondott a reggae műfaj eredetéről: "I did not care, I was just singing for the rythm of the music" We Are One filmfesztivál - pár napig még a youtubeon fent van.
