Misfortune (Reprise)
I realized I never talked about option 1. Let me back up. And bear with me a moment. We're going to get serious first, and then silly, okay?
Tumblr media
I. The Take
I have too many words about it which will probably keep coming and being further refined into new posts, but to put it as simple as possible: My personal portrayal take is that Misfortune is symbolic of a physical disability (aura and semblance are like a muscle, don't u kno) and an allegory for depression/anxiety, and both of these things are further maladapted due to trauma.
We are explicitly told that semblances may or may NOT be reflective of someone's soul, and that if it is, it can be either a semblance shaped by the soul OR a soul shaped by the semblance. ...Remember?
“A common philosophy is that a warrior’s Semblance is a part of who they are. Some say your personality and character can define your Semblance while some claim that it is the other way around. Of course, there are still many who don’t see a connection at all."
We are also explicitly told by qrow that his "semblance isn't like most."
tl;dr (a) people trying to frame Misfortune as some sort of manifestation of qrow's personality or true self just because using that lens does fit a lot of the other characters, or (b) trying to say that having a different perspective about himself and the trauma aspect of things suddenly makes the other parts go away - absolutely smacks of (a) victim blaming and (b) ableism [to me].
This is a me thing, a personal interpretation and portrayal thing. But this is also my muse and my space to talk about it, so I do. No actual hate to people that interpret or have fun with it otherwise, you're valid.
II. The Alternates
On a lighter note, the two alternative options I will accept for Misfortune reflecting some aspect of qrow's true self are:
He wants to stay the hell away from main character drama, so he acknowledges his B Sitcom plot, complete with the stupid slapstick.
and
2. Super secret [til now] background tertiary allusion: Uncle Charlie.
Welcome to doing whatever you wish! you got the wrong guy. Laughing and singing all day! oh, isn't that wonderful. you mean there's no surprises or anything? Oh no, no, no. We know everything here. aw, that's just lovely. the clouds. the grass. the air. [/s] hey. would you like to dance? you must have studied dancing. you have natural rhythm... Ah! I'm getting dizzy... everything is so lovely here. so planned. so ordinary. and that's what's driving me crazy. i need Brazil, the throb, the thrill i've never been there, but someday i will adventure and danger! love from a stranger! let me be surprised! today there's sun, they said there'd be snow when all's said and done, it's fun not to know what keeps my heart humming is guessing what's coming let me be surprised! oh, ain't it great when fate ...makes you wait the world seems mirthless you feel worthless then suddenly, there's a big bone on your plate! Oh, Charlie, please remember Down there's a world of used cars And singles bars, broken dreams And out of reach stars... but it isn't over, not for this rover i don't like to steal... but i don't buy this deal... in 'bout three seconds, she'll have realized... and she's gonna be. wait'll you see. she's gonna be ...surprised!
this is relevant at just face value, but also.
qrow as 'the second child, the twin who never should have been, but came back wrong/cursed from a prior life' has been a brainworm based around this allusion for a very long time, and then Vol 9 came along and we got canon ascension/reincarnation for potentially everybody AND canon time-fuckery based around pocket watch imagery. so you know what, it's the time and place to talk about that too.
Ozma > qrow > Jaune parallel of boys trying so hard to be heroes but just end up dicking around and caught in things they don't understand. delicious.

Will any foreign royals be at the coronation? And what tiaras do you think the ladies will wear? Also do you think that Zara and the Yorks will be there? If so, do you think they'll wear tiaras?
Heirs are usually the people who attend. I'm hopeful that Amalia and Elisabeth will be there to represent their fathers too.
As for what tiaras are worn, usually the royal ladies dust off their most important jewels for big occasions like this. They also tend to pic any jewels that may be associated with the country the event is being held, so as this is a British coronation, my guess is they may go with something that has British connections.
My predictions are:
Mary: Ruby Parure. It's her most important set and it was created for the coronation of Napoleon which makes it fitting.
Victoria: the Connaught or the King Edward VII Ruby tiara. Both have British connections and the Ruby tiara would be one of the few Victoria hasn't worn that isn't exclusively reserved for the Queen.
Mette Marit: Queen Mauds pearl tiara. Again, a British connection and its the most important one MM has ever worn.
Elisabeth: most likely the tiara she debuted at Ingrid Alexandra's 18th birthday party
Amalia: it has to be the Stuart. Is it too much for a 19 year old? Probably. But who cares? It's a coronation ffs and what better jewel to wear to a British coronation than the famous Stuart Diamond? Realistically tho I could also see the Wurrtemberg or the Sapphire tiaras. Both are impressive but maybe not as daunting as the Stuart.
Rjawa al Saif: I have no idea how realistic it is that she could be in attendance much less wear a tiara if she is, but should she attend, I'm hopeful that she would wear Ranias Arabic Scroll tiara or Ranias diamond tiara.
As for Zara and the Yorks, my guess is that they'll all wear their wedding tiaras. Zara might borrow another one of Anne's but I doubt the Yorks have any options, unless I was wrong about Fergie selling her tiara and one of them busts that out. I just don't see Charles being overly generous to his nieces and letting them pick something else unless there's a stash of tiaras we don't know about.

AWAE ep. 3x03 Commentary: What can stop the determined heart SPOILERS
Lot’s of tears but just bear with me guys
Bash commenting on Gilbert's cooking skills as soon as he comes in the kitchen 'Don't forget the salt!'
I'm pretty sure G is making porridge so it really shouldn't be that hard
“Since you can't go outside to meet spring I'll bring spring to you” Oh my loves
I'm never gonna get over Bash calling his daughter Delie and fussing over her that’s a fact
Mary having a dizzy spell during the first 10 minutes already made me worried but when I saw the bandage on her hand and the infection my mind legit screamed BLOOD POISONING and then Bash said she had a fever and me -
"Do you think she could catch this?" Can you hear my heart breaking?
And then Bash bringing little delphine to the Cuthberts to look after her really shows how close they all must've gotten between S2 and s3
Anne and Marilla snapping at each other while making sure to be polite oh boy...
Matthew worryingly making sure that Marilla doesn't trip and fall down the stairs with the baby in her arms is pure sugar
Also, Matthew's facial expression when he realized he was to look after the baby hahaha
HOURS??
The first Shirbert scene... Gilbert looking at Anne as she worries about Mary and gets upset about the injustice
Also, can we talk about how Marilla makes sure that Gilbert catches the train? They're like a big family now. The Blythe-Lacroix-Cuthbert family. We can take from this scene that they have grown much closer as friends/family and probably spend a lot of time together outside of school (Shirbert). Both Anne and Marilla know their way around the house and Gilbert leaves them without any concern. He doesn't need to show them where anything is because they’re already so familiar with it.
The quick but sweet smile shirbert shared before he left to go to the station
BASHS FACE WHEN HE GETS TOLD MATTHEW IS WATCHING HIS DAUGHTER THO
Barn. BARN. Tree. TREE. Horse. HORSE. Goat. GOAT. Jerry. JERRY
Anne leaving with Marilla only to come back straight afterwards to care for Mary really shows the kind of bond they have. Mary teaching Anne how to cook certain things and Anne wanting to use that knowledge to make her feel better.
Aren't you all kinds of sixteen-year-old trouble?
Mary shivering... The fever is getting worse
Bash saying Mary has plenty of time to bring Avonlea to her dinner table after she said she misses cooking for many people 😭
The kite 'It'll look like the sun in the sky'
The school scene threw me off. It was kinda unnecessary except to show that the printing machine is working
!!!Josie Pye one of these days I'm gonna reach through my screen and take Anne as an inspiration to whack you over the head with a slate!!!
Ruby sweetie I love you but not everything is about Gilbert and there are far more important things to worry about
Moody x Ruby? Okay but not in this episode, please
Winifred Rose? No, it's Winnie! Stop looking at him as if you want to undress him argh.
Winnie getting cut off by Gilbert because he doesn't have time for her flirtation ay
Dr Ward telling her that she needs to cancel all of his appointments for the next day didn't make me worry any less thank you very much
“Sometimes life finds gifts in the darkest of places” - Anne Shirley Cuthbert
Marilla and Anne having a moment of truce while looking after Delie
Bash is so heartbroken I can't even look at him it hurts too much.           The way they use slow motion to portray his inner turmoil and pain while he is listening to Dr ward telling Gilbert that Mary has 2 weeks left to live if she's lucky...
Gilbert stepping in to check on Mary because Bash is not able to and him breaking down crying as he tells Mary the truth...
I mean I knew she had sepsis from the beginning of the episode but hearing her say it made me tear up immediately
JUST TELL HER IT'S BLOOD POISONING FOR GODS SAKE
Oh, Gilbert I'm so sorry. Why does he have to lose all the people that are dear to him?
The look Anne and Gilbert shared through the window when he went to get Delie... She could read him like a book.
Gilbert and Anne walking back to Blythe's farm together. 'I think I'll walk'.     "May I join you?" I love how she doesn't want to leave him alone because she knows it's not easy to be in such a situation by yourself and because she wants to be there for him and make sure he is not alone.
Gilbert's doubts about becoming a doctor because he thinks he's too invested and that him caring about the patients would make it worse for them. Anne comforting him, knowing exactly the right thing to say. She reassures him but with honesty, she's not just trying to cheer him up she's trying to tell him that he's the right person to be a doctor and that she believes in him. "You will be a wonderful Doctor. Caring deeply will always be the right thing" You can tell by his facial expression that he's taking to heart what she's telling him. Return off the heart eyes ladies and gents. (Not that they were ever really gone.)                                                           I feel like he's really seeing her in another light after this scene.
Mary bursting into tears with delie in her arms and Marilla by her side was truly bittersweet
"Where's Anne? I need, to talk to her"
As if I wasn't already crying enough... Gilbert crying and Anne hugging him certainly threw me over the edge especially when he pulled her even closer and you could make out the tear marks on his cheeks.
He's so grateful for her in that moment.
My favourite scene in the entire episode is probably Anne's and Mary's heart to heart in which Mary worries about Delie´s future without her and knows how hard it must've been for Anne in the orphanage without them ever having talked about it. How she wonders what made Anne the way she is, loving, bright and tender. I wish we could've gotten more of these scenes of them together.
Anne's advice to Mary that she should write Delie a letter and tell her everything she wants her to know, how much she loves her and how much she wishes she were still with her daughter while reassuring her that delie will always know how much she's loved. "But she won't know how much I cherish her"
I know it's accurate to their time but STOP CALLING THE INDIANS SAVAGES
“Young enough to still be saved?” How dare you assume that Ka'kwet and her people need saving! They’re content in the way they live, leave them be!
I'm not gonna lie. The bigger part of myself didn't want Bash to go and get Elijah but I did completely understand why Mary wanted to see her son and Bash should've at least tried to understand that. I know he's worried and I know what Elijah did was wrong but he's still her child, not only delphine.
Gilbert is such a good person. It had to be said. We all know he is but damn that boy has a heart of gold and Mary knows that as well, "I appreciate you so much Gilbert Blythe" got me chocked up.                    "You're a big part of my life I have, you know?", "Thank you for bringing  love back into my family's home." My second favourite scene of the episode was their moment together. "Be sure you marry for love. Only for love"
Anne planning on taking Delie under her wing was so sweet it warmed my heart.
Fuck you, Elijah. Being a coward and hiding from taking on responsibility is not right. I'm sorry you have to learn it the hard way through not being able to say goodbye to your mother.
I feel like I haven't stopped crying for longer than a second since I started watching the episode and now Bash falling onto his knees and praying for Mary to live has my emotions bubbling up again.
Gilbert being a gentleman and escorting Constanze and Jocelyn on the train and then to the farm to visit Mary. Also, Gilbert riding a carriage!!
Aahh I love those women
"No more crying. I mean it!!" - burst into tears lol
"I need to hold that baby!" /"Me first!"
I'm only gonna say it once. Anne hugged Gilbert and gave him strength so that he could be there for Bash and I think that's beautiful.
I loved Bash's and Gilbert's conversation about what it's like to lose someone they love and Gilbert proceeding to tell Bash that he needs to spend every last minute that he can with Mary because he'll regret it if he doesn't.
"I don't wanna live without her." *tears up*
Bash's and Gilbert's hug "I'm here."
Rachel... What are you doing there? Go home
Anne, Matthew and Marilla going to the Barry's to ask for a favour that would make Mary's dreams come true
Can we talk about Bash holding his family in his arms when they're sitting on the bed? Because I got chills
Now let's talk about the church scene. I don't know what to think about it all honestly. I'm so worried about Ka'kwet going to school.                  They're going to strip her of her identity. I know trouble when I see it.
The scene of Anne and Ka'kwet was just precious, pure gold. The way they smiled with excitement when they saw each other and then talk about being so alike it just made me smile. I do hope we get a scene of Anne explaining school to Ka'kwet like she said she'd do after church ended but I doubt it. Another thing that happened offscreen.
So let's talk about Mr Gilbert Blythe standing in the background. He was about to turn away from the situation until Anne excitedly ran past him to greet Ka'kwet and he doesn't take his eyes off of her after that. For a second there it actually looked like he wanted to talk to her but she didn't even notice. What exactly is the point of him being there? Nonetheless in the same shot? Is he just watching her like he does from time to time? Is he enchanted by the way she treats and acts around the Indians? Or is he waiting for Anne so that they can go into the church together? What's the purpose of him being there?
The conversation between Bash and Mary about her not wanting to die and a part of her wishing she wouldn't know she would is heartwrenching and when she proceeds to talk about Delies education and that she wants her to go to school and achieve the most possible as long as she wants to... It's so hard to watch them but the acting in this scene is just incredible. The whole episode is acting masterclass.
Bash saying he already started saving money for school and Mary laughing in delight because of course, he has started he's bash. He is Sebastian Lacroix her great love.
Oh you ain't slick Gilbert we all know you didn't mean the flower hat although the hat was "Beautiful" too
I can't handle it... She's so weak I'm not okay
The garden looks like Eden it's so so enchanting.
Matthew and Delie are my new favourite thing
"You're an Angel, Anne Shirley Cuthbert" Need I say more?
Oh Minnie May
Everyone singing for Mary and then saying the prayer with her is something I didn't know I needed. I love Amybeths voice. The entire garden scene was so wholesome and bittersweet. "The community brought itself to you" I'm tearing up
Mary looking at Bash and Mr Barry shaking hands must've been such a relief to her
Her last scene was made quite beautifully and symbolic with the paper butterfly changing into the yellow Kite before the screen faded to black.
This episode had me in tears the entire time. I didn't stop crying or trembling like a leaf for longer than 10 seconds. Can we just take a moment to appreciate the acting in this episode? Wow, that was a masterclass. As heartbreaking as this episode was I loved it so much. It was amazingly done and bittersweet.
Congratulations to whoever read all of this, let me know what you think.

your secret courtier here! i see you like awae! that's awesome! it's one of my favorite shows, ever. do you have any favorite chracters and ships from the show? mine are diana, ruby, & ms. stacey, and my favorite ships are diana + jerry, ruby + moody, & ms stacey and bash / mary and bash. what about you? (also, i need your feelings on the show being cancelled!)
Anne with an E is one of the first ever shows I was 100% invested in.. I mean it's one of the first book remakes I've seen that was so different yet so GOOD. And it most definitely is one of my favourite shows ever 😍
My favourite characters were Anne, Gilbert, Diana, Jerry, Bash and miss Stacy and also prissy whom in my opinion had one of the best character arcs ever! Wait and how could I forget Cole and aunt Josephine!
My favourite ships were Shirbert (these two were such idiots tho but I love them so much ahhh😩) bash and Mary (her death was so sad 😢 ) and although Diana and Jerry would have been cute, It wasn't explored enough for me so... I'm on the fence there...
As for cancelling...They shouldn't have cancelled the show! There was so much potential for one more season atleast and the reason it was cancelled was because people between 25 and 50 weren't watching the show? ?? A show about a young girl who's growth from childhood to adulthood is explored ? ? Who would've thought! (*screams in frustration*) I mean they could've showed so much! They were all going to college! 1800s college antics? Hello? It was also a really good show when it came to social issues and all in all it was that show 😎 but netflix always cuts the good ones so no suprise there 😩
Atleast the first 3 seasons will always be there whenever I want to watch sooo.. some solace there I guess... also there is always fanfiction soo 😂
This was fun to talk about.. thanks for asking hon!

My Favorite Moments In S3 Ep5:
gilbert talking to the bees
the forest scene
the giggles and snickers when miss stacy says “the birds and the bees” or “breast”
gilbert’s absolute fascination with native american treatments
jane talking shit about billy
anne and diana’s parting scene
i totally thought they were going to kiss
marilla taking the piss out of rachel
marilla comforting bash
gilbert just standing up and being all up in anne’s business when she mentions obituaries
gilbert’s face when diana announces that charlie posted ab her
fucking anne saying “busy, sorry” to charlie then leaving him
Rachel bring her son to the school (fucking hilarious)

Anne With an E 3x01 Highlights:
1. Shirbert. Wow. Where to begin. The take notice scene was really cute, and a little heartbreaking to watch. AB and LZ really did so well in acting it out. Him being hopeful, and then being disappointed.. Like, I felt that. And then when Ruby told Anne about the "Romance in his eyes", I could tell that Anne was rattled. Also, the scene where they're alone.. I don't know if it was just me, but Gil felt a bit more guarded there.
2. Marilla and Mathew with Anne. Marilla was so sweet in this episode. Baking the cake, worrying Anne would leave them. And Mathew.. I love this man so much, that gift was priceless and I was in tears watching that scene. Just beautiful.
3. Gilbert, Mary, Bash and Delly. You have no idea how much I loved that scene. Gilbert deserves to have such a lovely family. That kiss on Delly's forehead, tho, had me swooning (I want Shirbert babies now)
4. Anne's lineage. I loved her scene at the school and with Ms. Stacey. Anne has come so far, and she's started to accept her self more and more, and I am so proud of my baby. I can't wait to find out more about her. (and I can't wait for that journey with Gil)
5. Diana. Diana's frustration at not being able to go to Queens was so heartbreaking and so relatable. I really hope she gets what she wants. Also, her scene with Jerry was perfect (OTP) and also, poor Moody, that boy doesn't stand a chance.
6. The Girls' friendship, most notably Dianna and Anne. I love how much these two love each other, and I loved how dramatic they still are.
7. Mary and Bash. These two. Oh man, that scene was so playful and romantic and beautiful. I LOVE them.
8. Anne with Ka'kwet, and the whole tribe. Man, Anne is a literal ray of sunshine, and that is highlighted by how everyone (who is decent) loves her. The trade they did! Such a lovely detail, and so realistic. I really want More of that beautiful friendship.
9. The Funny moments. There were a lot, but I loved two in particular. When Anne went up to talk to Gilbert (Eyes--I 😂😂) and Jerry screaming "Her parents are dead".. Those were gold.
10. Josie and Billy.. A match made in hell 👌

Awae 3x05
we got our Shirbert content and I am very happy
first, I love their casual friend moment just talking normally. it was nice.
that dance was so cute! they both had fun, and they are both starting to feel something. my angsty teens tho, they don’t understand it fully yet.
but that was really sweet and I loved watching it
also, Diana and Jerry were super sweet too. and Diana doesn’t want to make Anne feel any less important to her; but it’ll be okay, and my ship will live on
I’m glad the Berry’s are seeing that they need to be more loving to others
oh my god, Charlie, dude, you need to take a step back. because everything you said was wrong
Rachel, all you had to say was that maybe we should get more people to help out with the baby, not that Bash should get married again so soon.
Ms. Stacy awkwardly explaining, in vague terms, marriage and consent and having children, was great.
I appreciate Gilbert and Bash’s relationship and how they are there are for each other. Mary’s obituary was perfect.
Bash totally knows it’s Anne; or I bet he figures it out soon.
all these teenagers feelings and trying to understand love and life. bless them.
Ruby seeing Moody play while everyone danced; I see what’s happening there.
all the girls wondering about babies and making Anne ask Gilbert was utterly hilarious
it was nice seeing all the girls at the end, just celebrate being girls and having those moments together. because even though they are growing up, let them stay young as long as they can

Note
are you an art historian? sorry if I got that detail wrong but I was wondering if you knew how people know the identity of a person in a portrait? For example, how do you know if a medieval portrait is of the queen or a noble and not an imaginary person or someone unknown? sorry if my question makes no sense
No, it’s a good question!  And I wouldn’t call myself an art historian yet, but I’m a tentatively aspiring one.  I might be one later if I do a fuckton more research and/or… get up the energy for grad school.  But I have my B.A. in art history!
SOOOOOO, spiel below.
Unless there’s an inscription, note, title, etc. written on the portrait it’s technically impossible to be 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt sure about a sitter’s identity…  I actually ranted about this eons ago because people on Tumblr are super desperate to find new portraits of Anne Boleyn (why Anne?  why not literally any other famous lady whose face has been largely lost to history?  because she’s Anne Boleyn, and since several probably authentic images have not proven that she’s super foxy hot people are looking for something that will).  It usually takes years for art historians to come to a consensus about the identities of unidentified sitters, and EVEN THEN, people still argue about it.  I’m sure this painting of Mary, Queen of Scots took tons of effort to uncover and based on what little I’ve read there’s great reason to believe that’s Mary (it even looks like other images we have of her) but I’m sure someone will write an article about how it’s REEEALLY someone else entirely.  I researched Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci for my capstone project, and even tho we have letters from Cecilia Gallerani, a mistress of the man most likely to have commissioned the portrait, saying “yeah so you have this portrait of me painted by Leonardo when I was younger” clearly referring to Lady with an Ermine… but there will still be outliers who say it isn’t her.
So.  In more conclusive cases, there will usually be records in place that let us know that a portrait was commissioned in the first place.  In the case of Isabella d’Este, we know that she was after Leonardo to paint her portrait and that it never happened but was in the planning stages–which leads to the conclusion that there are probably preliminary drafts in existence.  You find a preliminary draft of a woman matching Isabella’s general description and age, dating to the right time…  You can probably guess that the woman is Isabella.
Today, we also have technology that can help us guess how old a work is–it’s way harder for forgers to do what they once did because art historians can test for pigments and other materials that were only in use for certain time periods, and that helps narrow down the era.  Before then, there were stylistic notes that could give you an idea of when a painting was made.  For example–prior to the popularization of the three-quarter pose by artists like Leonardo, female sitters of Italy were usually in profile.  So if you find a portrait of an Italian lady sitting in a three-quarters pose, you can probably date the portrait to the late fifteenth century or later–and then you go into things like her style of dress, etc.  Style of dress goes a long way towards identifying a person’s place of origin, especially for women–English women dressed very differently from Italian women of the same era, and so on.
Most European portraits were of a certain class, up until some artists and patrons started playing around with everything from idealized peasant scenes to like... the proto-gritty shit Rembrandt dabbled in.  This is especially true for Catholic nations.  You had to be AT LEAST of the upper middle class to afford to commission a portrait, and for that matter, many artists tended to court a certain specified clientele.  Raphael spent much of the prime of his career working for the pope, and so that meant that he spent a lot of time in Rome, and that in turn meant that he was often in the service of glittery rich Romans.  Now, does this mean that the sitter is always rich?  No.  Raphael also painted a famous nude, La Fornarina, and the sitter was quite possibly his lower-class mistress.  But in that case, the person commissioning the painting was probably a rich guy who wanted a nude, and Raphael was like “fuck yeah getting a chance to paint Margarita naked and get paid for it, life is sweet”.  Patrons normally had $$$, basically, so if we see a typical portrait we know that we’re looking at that class, most likely, and the more expensive the portrait looks, the richer the sitter (and the patron) likely was.  Rarer pigments indicate more money spent, more detail on the clothing equals greater $$$.
When it comes to incredibly important families, there are spmetimes dead giveaways.  Bronzino’s portraits of Cosimo de’ Medici I’s household often featured details like rubies and pearls among the women, which one art historian I read from theorized was a signature of the Medici at that point in time.  It wasn’t unusual for women in particular to wear emblems of their families, because the portraits of them were usually commissioned by fathers or husbands, and essentially these were ownership tags.  That’s what Cosimo was doing, most likely.  If you know the artist–in this case, Bronzino–you probably know where they worked at a certain point in their lives.  If you know when the painting was executed, you know the artist was probably in X city.  Who would be most likely to employ Artist X during that time?  A small cluster of families.  You sort of have to narrow it down.  Most important families of Europe also had coats of arms, which can show up in their paintings–but unfortunately these are often the first to deteriorate and they begin to look similar.
When an artist was painting a famous sitter like Mary, they might include her initials somewhere, maybe in the case of a king or queen with a good Rex or Regina for measure.  Kings and queens are often given little identifiers, too, though these aren’t always consistent.  In several portraits of Mary her hands are emphasized because beautiful hands were prized at the time, Mary was considered a beauty, and so on (also Elizabeth’s hands were rumored to be scarred after her bout of smallpox, and whether or not this was exaggerated I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a dig after her reign began).  Mary is also often depicted in widow’s wear; now, this doesn’t mean that she wore those clothes often, but she was an iconically beautiful young widow after her first husband died, and then she *oh so tragically* lost another…  A lot of artists probably worked off of one painting Mary actually sat for in widow’s wear to have shopped around to potential suitors.  From what I read of this newly discovered portrait, Mary probably never sat for it; it was a tribute/propaganda piece by a support, and most likely the artist was working off of copies.
It’s kind of like how many portraits of Elizabeth I during her reign depict a few of the same things; grand red hair, magnificent clothes and jewels, flawless skin, dark eyes, the same basic facial features.  Did Liz have the time to sit for umpteen portraits?  No!  And she didn’t want to.  She didn’t want the reality of her aging appearance, she wanted the iconic Elizabethan image circulated, and so it was.  Art historians can later pick up on the commonalities between these propaganda pieces and figure out who they’re of.
In the case of this newly discovered work, I imagine the art historian also did a lot of research about the patron’s potential ties to Mary, the political climate at the time, whether or not the artist had materials to work from regarding Mary’s appearance, and so on.  Like I said, the painting looks like Mary, though that… doesn’t necessarily mean much–but the eyes are similar to the other portraits we see, the profile is right, her hair is styled as it was in other paintings, the outline of the clothes seems fine.
Basically, there is soooo much that goes into “proving” a sitter’s identity and even then you’ll never be 100% right in the eyes of everyone.  For years, people thought a portrait was of Katherine Howard, and recently that was debunked.  Everyone shops that portrait of a blond lady with one tit out as Lucrezia Borgia; it’s not.  Identifying people is cool but for a lot of art historians it’s somewhat irrelevant, because we’re more looking at what a portrait reflected about the times and that’s why Mary’s identity IS relevant in this particular case.  Going back to the Secret Anne Boleyn Painting conspiracy theories–people just wanna see a hot Anne there, and that’s what’s frustrating.  By showing us Mary here, this art historian has also given us an example of people showing their support for this embattled queen through propaganda commissions, and for that matter getting scared and covering it up.  That speaks to the political, social, and cultural goings-on of the time.
Some art historians love to find SEKRIT IMAGES because that sells books, but when you ask a lot of professors “do you think that’s a portrait of JANE SEYMOUR” or whatever they’ll probably be like “eh idk man”.  The identity is less important on its own than it is as it relates to the reasons by a commission.  I mean in my case the identities of portraits I studied in school were only really relevant in that I was able to discuss the political constructions that wives and brides became in one Italian court.  Otherwise identity didn’t matter at all.  And tbh, that ambivalence towards identifying people probably makes it even harder for the art historical world to come to a consensus on ANYONE.  But this new discovery sounds pretty solid and honestly, it’s really cool.
