Originally recorded in October 1971, Boston, Mass. on Joe Perry's Wollensak 3M 1280 2-track tape recorder.

Letter to A Teacher

What you probably need to know is how ADHDrs study ... ADHDrs are event driven. Positive events cause hyper focus Negative events cause avoidance

ADHDrs don't switch tasks easily ADHDrs can't handle stress ADHDrs thrive in kaos

ADHDrs can walk into a room that looks like a tornado hit it and organize everything, tell you how it was laid out, why it was that way, and what the next steps were.

ADHDrs are intuitively able to recognize patterns that NTs can't.

ADHDrs have associative memories (everything must be associated to something, or in a separate bubble)

ADHDrs usually have idenic memories (what we see we can reproduce)

ADHDrs think in 3D constructs, though rarely can we describe it.

ADHDrs can't verbalize their emotional state, though we can draw it

ADHDrs have to externalize everything Using an inverse tangent wave, an ADHDrs emotional range is between -1 and 1, while an NTs is between -3 and 3. Once our emotional energy goes beyond that limit, we begin experiencing all sorts of Executive Function disorders. - No recall - Loss of working, short term, and long term memory - inability to remember important dates, facts, or other details - associative memory loss (everything contained in the balloon is lost when it floats away) - we can't prioritize tasks, as every task is equally important.

Study Habits

So, how did I study for my 2 masters ... Yes, I have 2 masters in Business and Project Management I found that I had to take the 1st week of class to read the entire 600 page text book. It was easy, as I had material I could associate all the text to. The remaining 4 weeks were dedicated to writing 10 papers 5000 words each, building a 150 slide presentation together. The requirements on the presentation was .. all pictures, text in the notes section only. There were 5 discussion topics as well, with responses. Concerning discussion topics, writing about a topic I know a great deal about is easy. The topic headers focused on what to write about. Noisy topic headers make it hard to figure out what needs tob e written and discourages me. When I ask, what is the topic, its because I can't see it. My dyslexia literally prevents me from seeing it. It's buried in paragraphs of unrelated material. And, my ADHD and RSD prevents me from writing because I don't feel I have enough knowledge of the topic to provide anything of interest / use. On top of the fact that the responses are initially hidden. And, then there's the formatting issue. Wide paragraphs are horrible. I can't track the lines. RSD .. rejection sensitivity dysphoria .. the inability to complete a task because someone somewhere will disapprove. I only know when something isn't working because I'm hitting so many negative events and start avoiding it. As mentioned, I normally don't know how to describe in words what's going on. I usually draw or doodle, or write a story. The math in physics will always kill me, which most NTs consider to be odd, since I'm a programmer. How could I be bad at math. As another professor pointed out .. programming uses assignment statements. One sided math equations. Physics uses math as relationships. Something I'm not used to. And, manipulating the equations is not something I can do easily. It requires a lot of work even to just understand the various forms (A = B * C) takes on. So, when the book jumps from one form to another, I'm lost. Example: (c dt)^2 = (c dh)^2 + (v dt)^2 dt = dh / (1 - (v/c)^2)^.5 I can't figure out how to get there That's dyscalculia

Dyscalculia .. like ADHD, has a portion of the brain missing to execute math. Scientists recently found that math concepts and language concepts are processed in two totally separate sections of the brain, and that math doesn't use an ALU like a CPU does. It uses a guess network, which is reinforced each time the results are correct. I don't study at regular times. Most ADHDrs usually study between 9 pm and 5 am. There's something about the sun being down and us finally calming down to the point where we can focus and concentrate. ADHDrs love a challenge, but hate having to stop and wait for a response to a problem. So, having to wait for you to respond, is like fingers on the chalk board. (If you have a list of common places that students get lost, confused, or stuck on problems, nows the time to start producing videos on those topics.) ADHDrs are persistent (as long as we know we can figure out something) - Dr. Westerburg will attest to this. I surprised him with trying to execute a lab experiment at home at the beginning of the pandemic where magnets should have caused a downward force on a scale when electricity was running through it. I bought all the necessary supplies because I was curious. I video taped the experiment for him to see. Even though I didn't get a reading, he said I had everything right and it should have worked. The only thing he said that might no be correct is the accuracy of the scale .. as it was a kitchen scale. So, when I say that your class structure doesn't fit my ADHD learning style .. basically, you have a lot of hard dates on everything. Which means that while I'm hyper focusing on studying and completing problems, I'm missing quizzes and discussions because they are getting locked out. The text of the labs are wrong, because you turned them into jpegs vs a pdf that I can download and expand, contract as needed. I can't find the lab report sheet. I can't find the lab report videos. Nothing is where I expect it to be. This could be based on what previous professors presented in previous semesters, or it could be a dyslexic / stress issue. And, yes I'm still trying to sort out all my learning disabilities and coping systems. I did go to a university psych dept to get fully tested and specifically asked that they report on learning disabilities and coping strategies, but that was 600$ wasted. And, I have friends telling me I may be on the autistic spectrum.

Easy Answers?

So, I don't have any easy answers on what does or doesn't work in an educational setting for me. I know that I coded best when I had a running conversation with a friend - and he didn't even know how to code - it was just nice to chat with someone while I coded. That, however, is not an expectation here. I highly doubt that anyone is on during the times I'm study. Prompting is your best bet with me, if you want to know what I'm doing and how I'm doing. Or review the homework and see where I'm having problems and then do a lecture video on how to solve the problem. I look at physics problems like cross word puzzles - which I also hate. The more equations I have to tie together to get the answers, the harder it becomes for me to solve them. Dr. Westerberg say this first hand with Kurkoffs rules using 2 loops. No matter how hard I tried, I could not get the equations to work out properly. I have an IQ of 163, but can't play chess. It's just a game I've never understood. I understand the moves, but can't think 7 steps into the game. I can play freecell, and hold all 120 moves in my head. And, I teach Gracie Jujitsu. In fact, in studying Gracie Jujitsu is where I found that I had idenic memory. So, that's me.
