I don’t know what purpose any David Bowie greatest hits album could have at this point beyond reselling the same songs in yet another package. In my opinion, the important greatest hits collections were the singles collection released in the early 90s and then #nothinghaschanged from #2014, which at least had some unreleased tracks. The only distinguishing feature of this collection is that it has two tracks from #Blackstar, but that’s hardly enough. There’s also a new mix of Life on Mars? by Ken Scott, it goes way back with Bowie. That is something. It’s a nice mixtape, but it’s irrelevant as a greatest hits collection. I’ve been playing through my Bowie collection, vinyl only, in chronological order, at least approximately. These posts have been in part to promote one of my two new books, David Bowie and Romanticism, and of course for my own sustained attention to Bowie. This is my last one, so I will not be posting about Bowie with the same frequency that I have been. He once again reinvented himself musically and contributed to the advancement of western music in doing so. I contributed a chapter about two songs on this album to a forthcoming #Jazzandliterature collection (Routledge 2023), and the final chapter of David Bowie and Romanticism discusses this album in relationship to the ars moriendi tradition, or the attempt to create an artful experience of death. The album communicates bitterness, fear, anger, and a number of other emotions associated with the knowledge of one’s coming death. His early material was intended to be part of a musical. After that, his creative output is full of character sketches describing people in situations. For example, he imagined Ziggy Stardust as part of a narrative about an alien sent to earth by sentient black holes, but he never pulled the narrative together—#ziggy is at most a loosely defined concept album. He then hoped to write a musical version of #1984, but the Orwell estate denied him the rights, so that material became #diamonddogs. And then in 1995 he came the closest he would ever come with #1outside. But that was just the start of a story: he meant to complete it in a five album cycle ending with an opera at the turn of the century - but the album cycle never materialized. Bowie was never able to pull a bunch of songs together into a coherent narrative of his own devising for a staged play. #lazarus is his fulfillment of that dream. #ednawalsh wrote the book for this work of #musical #theater at Bowie’s direction, one that extends the story of Thomas Jerome Newton towards some kind of an end. Thematically, and I hope this isn’t misunderstood, it’s about how the character needs to “kill” the imaginary woman of his dreams, the woman as a -mental object- who has been haunting his mind his whole life in order to live in the present and find some kind of closure. It’s about letting go. It’s not about the real woman he may have been thinking about from decades ago, whoever she was, but about not carrying her around in his mind every day for the rest of his life. Some of his musical movements here anticipate what he would do years later on #blackstar, especially interesting since it was his reunion with @tonyvisconti after over 20 years. He had been touring with @nineinchnails. The previous album, #1outside, was the product of over 30 hours of recorded music, and Bowie had been promising a five album sequence culminating in an opera released at the turn of the 21st century. He went on a couple years about that, and then released this album, and the sequence never materialized. He had moved on. This album cover inspired the book cover for David Bowie and Romanticism, which is a mashup of this album cover (a visual reference rather than the actual image) and #caspardavidfriedrich’s 1818 painting #wandererintheseaoffog. I wanted to do something other than just slap Bowie’s lightning bolt on everything. I do want to slap Bowie’s lightning bolt on everything, but I don’t only want to do that. Their first #album came out in #1989, and Bowie started the 90s with the second Tin Machine album, #tinmachineii I locate Tin Machine within the history of #grunge, but their second album is better produced than their first, which means I’m not sure if I like it more or not. But I like both of these albums. Picked this one up from @musiconvinyl in #coloredvinyl. I had to cut off the album cover because apparently the dumb algorithms on these social media sites can’t process statuary. Their first #album, released in #1989, or any of the band’s music for that matter, has not aged well in later receptions of Bowie’s work, but I love these albums. I think Tin Machine’s music needs to be evaluated against the history of #grunge, which was starting up about the same time. While members of the first grunge bands like @nirvana grew up listening to @ledzeppelin and #punk like I did, these bandmembers had been around a bit longer and were bringing in older influences.
