i think the number one most irritating thing to me about star trek is how it completely ignores the evolution of language. and it's such an annoying nitpick to have because that whole thought process is of so little consequence - if writers had tried to come up with how human language (mainly english) will sound in 400 years and written their shows accordingly, the whole franchise would a) never have had pop culture appeal and never have become a franchise spanning a dozen series with sooo many plots episodes and characters i love, b) would have had such a focus on language and on making the audience understand that it would have been hard to make the show about anything else, and c) would probably have been weird and nonsensical cult classic for a niche audience.

but still it bugs me ALL the time while i watch and i can't stop thinking about it. these characters use the same sentence structures, grammar, catchphrases, etc etc that we do. IT MAKES NO SENSE. in reality, in 400 years, the way we talk now will sound to people like shakespearean sounds to us. sure, we can understand most of it, but it sounds strange and archaic and we would never speak that way unironically. i just keep wondering what star trek would be like if we tried to imagine how people will speak in 400 years. i call this schrödinger's star trek where my ideal star trek is one that is completely different from the star trek i love so much so that everything i love about it is gone... you get it? no probably not

Had a great Dragon Con as my comfort blorbos. It's a delight as a niche cosplayer to have folks pick you out of the crowd as something to geek out over.

And as always, being a trans guy, it's a big confidence boost to be told you look amazing.

That said, I'm counting down the days til I get my normal haircut and my beard grows back. Give me about 2 weeks, ha ha.

Thanks to the chaos of being mid-flight from Florida, this year was only slightly upgraded costumes, but I have an idea for something completely new for next year that I want to get started on. It will be a return to leather armor, which I am excited about.

I'm also still trying to pull off the Jared Harris cosplay hat trick, so Lane Pryce or Professor Moriarty, here I come!

Moving update:

With all luck to a completed closing finally happening next week, @crowtoed and I should be starting our drive out of Florida on November 7th. We celebrated pre-emptively with a goodbye to EPCOT, which included a truly befuddling pickle milkshake at the Food & Wine festival.

Thanks to everyone who has reached out offering a place to crash along our route north -- we have called ahead and found some cat-friendly hotels, and as much as I'd love to squish some of y'all's faces IRL, it'll be less stressful for the cats to have a large room where we're the only people.

We're not out of the woods just yet, but it's feeling more and more likely every day.

Moving update: our offer on a house was accepted and the inspection happens next week. If all goes well, we'll be in our new place mid-November!

We think we'll be moving beginning of November! We're currently under contract on a house and the seller just accepted our post-inspection terms to address a few issues.

I'm still holding my breath, but so far this seems real! 😅

Looks like I got caught in the great Twitter account purge meltdown because I have a second account for Cospital.

Elon evidently made his engineers release shitty code the Friday of a long holiday weekend. (Looks like it is running in batches, so good luck to other folks. I can still log in to my alt, though, hilariously enough.)
