Een van de mooiste plekken van Rotterdam is het eiland van Brienenoord. Het eiland ontstond begin 19e eeuw door verzanding van een rivierbocht. Baron van Brienen kocht het in 1847 en gaf het eiland haar naam. Een oord is een buitendijks stuk land. Zo kwam het naastgelegen eiland in de 15e eeuw ook aan haar naam: Feije’s oord werd Feijenoord. Het eiland van Brienenoord werd beplant met bomen. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden deze vrijwel allemaal gekapt. Eerst door de Duitsers die de stammen gebruikten. Later in de hongerwinter door de Rotterdammers zelf. Na de oorlog ontstonden er vooral veel volkstuintjes. Maar ook werd er naar olie geboord, werden delen van de Rotterdamse metrotunnels in elkaar gezet en waren er jeugdhuizen. Maar het meest opvallend is natuurlijk de brug, waarvan drie pijlers op het eiland staan. Het afgelopen jaar is het eiland heringericht door de @gemeenterotterdam en een prachtig stuk natuur geworden! Ga het ontdekken! ————- One of Rotterdam’s most beautiful places is this island. Van Brienenoord is placed underneath the bridge. It was formed in the early 19th century. At first it was planted with trees, but these were cut down during World War 2. Later tunnels were build to be sunk in the river, oil was found here and the famous bridge was build on the island. Op 14 mei 1940 werd het centrum van Rotterdam gebombardeerd om de weerstand van de mariniers, die de Duitsers belemmerden de Maasbruggen over te steken, te breken. De Duitsers stelden de verdedigers een ultimatum tot overgave, waarna de stad gebombardeerd zou worden. De dreiging van het bombardement zorgde voor onderhandelingen tussen de Nederlandse en Duitse legerleiding, waardoor het bombardement geannuleerd diende te worden. Door diverse miscommunicatie aan Duitse zijde bereikte dit bericht slechts 1 van de 3 naderende eskaders Heinkel HE111 bommenwerpers. 54 bommenwerpers bombardeerden de stad in 6 minuten plat. Honderden mensen stierven en duizenden huizen werden vernield. De bommenwerpers van het derde eskader lieten hun bommen in de Hoeksche Waard vallen, waar ook nog enkele doden vielen. In 2015 werd de aanval herdacht met een tentoonstelling in de onderzeebootloods op de Heijplaat. Een van de blikvangers was deze betonnen Heinkel. Na de tentoonstelling is deze op zijn huidige plaats gezet, voor het Rotterdamse oorlogsmuseum @museumrotterdam ————— In May 1940 German forces were advancing throughout The Netherlands. At Rotterdam Dutch marines made sure they could not pass the bridges. The advance halted and this frustrated German command. Under threat of a total bombardment negotiations started. Due to miscommunication on German side these negotiations didn’t reach all German bombers which were approaching the city. Only one out of three squadrons turned away from the city. 54 Heinkels dropped their deadly load on the city destroying the city centre. The third squadron dropped their bombs over the Hoeksche Waard, where more victims were made. In 2015 an exhibition was held regarding the bombardment.
