"I Did That"
For summer of 2003(?)
Mom, Granny, and I stepped off the subway, heading for a long day of monuments and museums in D.C. We had not walked very far when we came across a circular tribute to the women who served in World War 2, so we stopped to look. After a few minutes of looking at the raised bronze scultpure photos, Granny points and says, "I did that."
Suddenly the rest of the monument is absolutely unimportant as Mom and I both scurry to see what she is pointing at. There before us are women who are working together to collect information over a phone, drawing it on a map, and talking about the map. Granny explaind that they would get the weather data from the coast of Maine as the weather left the USA, and make weather maps so the European Front would know what weather might be in bound and could coordinate movements and plans.
"Wow Granny! That is so cool!"
She shrugged- "We just did our job."
Like so many women of her generation, they did a job and kept moving, not really appreciated or thanked for their part in the grand scheme of things.

So I’ve been hand painting boots for myself. I’m getting a lot of feedback that I should sell them. But this sems difficult unless the client would provide their own, known to be comfortable boots, or I did say only one stule if boot in the most common size, which is size 8, ready made. After Spartan Racing figured I would go and explore. First hit up the Commemorative Air Force Museum. The volunteer was amazing. Gave me a tour of the museum including their mechanic shop. ✈️ They had a wooden airplane used for training. The “Mash” helicopter 🚁! Did you watch “Mash”? Took me back to those childhood years watching TV 📺 So much history in a small place. This place is maintained and shared by volunteers. I was amazed how much time I spent here without realizing it. Time flies when you’re having fun! Def need more museums like this that shares stories and history. This is a poster titled, "We Can Do It." It always made me nervous because it didn't specify what we could do. How do I know if I can do it if I don't even know what it is? And even if I could do it, maybe I wouldn't want to. Or I may want to negotiate a better contract before doing it.
To ease my anxiety about being asked to do something unknown, I looked up exactly what this poster meant. I found that it was a World War II poster meant to inspire women to work harder.👩🏼🔧 It was only used in Westinghouse Electric factories producing helmet liners. Since America didn't run out of helmet liners, I guess the workers were inspired. It was never shown to female riveters though, so the recent association of it with "Rosie the Riveter" is unjustified.👩🏼🏭
The poster was made by J. Howard Miller, who made 42 morale inspiring posters for Westinghouse, each being displayed for only two weeks. This one was only displayed in February 1943.
Although it was little seen during the War, it made it to the National Archives with other War posters. In 1982 it was used in a Washington Post Magazine article titled "Poster Art for Patriotism's Sake". Afterwards it re-appropriatd by feminist movements. It was made into a postage stamp in 1999 and has been used in campaigns for some US politicians.
In 1984 a woman named Geraldine Hoff Doyle saw a photo of a woman working a lathe during the War. She had had such a job in 1942 when she was 18, and she assumed it was her. In 1994 she saw the poster on the cover of Smithsonian Magazine and assumed that it had been inspired by the photo. She died in 2010, and the news credited her as having been the model based on no evidence except for her assertions.
Then in 2011, Naomi Parker Fraley saw the photo and recognized it as being her. A professor from Seton Hall University tracked down the original photo and found that it was indeed credited to Naomi.
The artist left no writings identifying the model, but since the photo and poster had now been linked by the press, Naomi is considered to be the most likely model.
Now I'm going to hang this by the pantry to inspire my human mom to give me more cat treats.😼😺

National Rosie The Riveter Day!
Today is #NationalRosieTheRiveterDay, celebrated on March 21 to recognize the part American women played in America’s victory in World War II.
During World War II, American railroads were the primary way to move troops and supplies for mobilization on two war fronts. In order to keep the trains running, women were encouraged as part of their patriotic duty, to apply for jobs that were traditionally held by men.
These ‘Rosies’ were often the wives of railroaders who were deployed overseas. During the war, white women, who had been mostly employed by the railroads in secretarial roles such as clerks and telegraphers, were now employed in a variety of non-operating roles. Black women also worked as cleaners and laundresses on rail carts, but were also employed in non-operating crafts doing back-breaking labor on the railroads.
Their work ensured that railroads could move supplies and soldiers throughout the country to major ports on the east and west coasts in support of the war effort. #WorldWar2 #RosietheRiveter #KheelCenter
