Howdy y'all.
I went to see Joy Ride today and I wanted to tell y'all how I felt about it.
I...LOVED IT!!
It made me laugh, it made me cry. It's a beautiful discussion about friendship. Collectivist vs individualistic cultures. And Sex vs romance. It was awesome!
It's unapologetically raunchy, it subverts tropes. The sex is weird and great. It has a bisexual having weird, fun sex. A super fun, somewhat kinky threesome, an assisted masturbation scene and a dance off.
All of which were also well done and satisfying. There's cultural celebration and friends coming through when you need them most.
Most importantly this movie is about bonding with "your" weirdos. That group of people that just get you, that see you. And they may not always agree with you but they'll help you just the same when you're down.
But also you should fuck that hot guy or take that adventure if you have the opportunity cause yes!
Okay, that's if for now!! Go see Joyride! It's great! I'm not to be too spoilery!

American Born Chinese
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
American Born Chinese (2023, USA)
Creator: Kelvin Yu (based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang)
Mini-review:
I loved this so much! Sure, it has its flaws, but its strengths far outweigh them. The show feels refreshing and almost groundbreaking thanks to the way it takes inspiration from Journey to the West and Chinese culture. With these elements, the show gets to tell a fantastic story about coming of age and finding your identity. It also tackles the topic of representation head-on, with a beautiful monologue by Ke Huy Quan in one of the last episodes. I can't think of many TV shows that talk so frankly about this, and American Born Chinese deserves big kudos for that.
But the main reason why this show is a hit is its cast. For starters, we have legends like Michelle Yeoh, the aforementioned Ke Huy Quan and Daniel Wu. Obviously, they are as great as anyone would expect from them. But the young cast also delivers: Ben Wang's comedic timing is perfect, and Jimmy Liu pretty much steals the show with an incredibly charming and adorable performance. On top of all this, the action scenes are fantastic, with amazing choreographies and very stylish and cinematic direction. Also, I thought this was supposed to be a limited series, but I guess it's not? I'm not complaining, cause I really enjoyed it, but I hope it's doesn't end up being cancelled.
P.S. Why the f**k is Disney+ not promoting the hell out of this? They have Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All At Once, plus Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the Shang-Chi movie, and they are doing nothing to promote it. It's seriously baffling.

Lionsgate said Monday that its upcoming comedy marking the feature directorial debut of Crazy Rich Asians scribe Adele Lim will be called Joy Ride. The studio also unveiled the first still from the film, which you can view below.
The film due for release June 23 stars Ashley Park (Emily in Paris), Sherry Cola (Good Trouble), Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Sabrina Wu as unlikely friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure. When Audrey’s (Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Cola), her irreverent, childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Hsu), her college friend-turned-Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Their no-holds-barred, epic experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.
The film from Point Grey and Red Mysterious Hippo also stars Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians), Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Alexander Hodge (Insecure) and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians). The script by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong & Teresa Hsiao was based on a story by Chevapravatdumrong, Hsiao and Lim.

Tiny Review: Kung Fu Panda 4. Wholesome passing of the staff.
Tumblr media
I went into this with very low expectations. The franchise has been quite lacklustre. The previous movie barely had any story.
But this one, like its theme, brings change. It’s commendable that they are transitioning the franchise past Po and into a new generation.
I love Po’s slow acceptance of passing on the staff. And look forward to Zhen’s heroic growth arc, in the next one.
Edit: OMG, I realized this so late... Po's awkward transition into bad jokes is a reflection of him slowly becoming a father-figure(dad jokes)!
Hmm, I can’t help but think of the MCU’s transition as well. I think this succeeds where Marvel failed, because Zhen is a wholly different personality than Po.
Whereas in the MCU, the successors were mostly gender/race-bended bland copies of the originals.

John Oliver on The Daily Show. Well this brings back some memories. The remix of the theme song at the end of the clip absolutely did something to me.
I love seeing Ronny Chieng meeting John Oliver's energy - telling the audience to stop their clapping, snarking at John that he came crawling back, demanding John be American for a few seconds... just fantastic. I now have a sudden and intense love for Ronny Chieng.
There's a bond between the two of them based on their shared experiences as immigrants who moved literally to do TDS, and it elevates the interview tremendously. It delves into the kinds of topics I love, like John not giving a fuck about anything, relearning and adjusting to cultural differences with comedy in a new country, and the TDS "alumni network".
TDS freebie discourse is my new favorite thing on earth. Multiple minutes of this interview is about how correspondents did not used to get free suits and now they do. And they're monogrammed. Times have very much changed, even if John hates the green room and fears it.
I also love hearing about the psychology behind field pieces in various forms. Rewatching old TDS episodes is jarring in some cases because of just how brutal or weird those sections are (especially in the 2000 transitional era between Craig Kilborn and Jon Stewart), it's interesting to hear how the people involved view themselves in those situations. John views himself in those as "the asshole" and was always presenting himself as such, which tracks.
Extraordinary Ability Visa sounds like a terrible joke. Holy shit.
God I loved this whole thing. It's good to be back watching these clips and feelings barfing on Tumblr.
