Several months after Moscow launched its full-scale war against Ukraine, Russian authorities, short on manpower, allowed the Wagner mercenary group to start recruiting inmates from Russian prisons. Many of the prisoners who agreed to enlist had been incarcerated for most of their adult lives. Pavel Zakharov, a 39-year-old from the Republic of Karelia, was granted freedom in January after purportedly spending six months on the battlefield with Wagner. Before his mercenary career, Zakharov was serving an 11-year sentence for brutally murdering his girlfriend’s mother as “revenge” for the way she had treated her daughter. Journalists from the independent media outlet Holod used court records to reconstruct Zakharov’s story. Meduza is publishing an abridged translation of their report.
On the evening of January 24, 2015, Nina Belova was celebrating her 61st birthday in her St. Petersburg apartment. Surrounded by friends and family, she didn’t notice the gray Lada sedan that was parked outside of the building. As the sun set, a man and woman inside the vehicle watched the guests leave one by one.
Once they were sure Nina was the only person still home, the couple got out of the vehicle. The woman was heavyset, with blonde hair reaching almost to her shoulders; the man was skinny and wore his dark hair in a crew cut. They walked up to the building, and the woman called Nina on the intercom.
“Mom, we decided to stop by for some tea,” she said. The woman, Nadezhda Nikolayeva, was Nina Belova’s 40-year-old daughter, and she was accompanied by her 31-year-old boyfriend, Pavel Zakharov. The two lived together in Svyatozero, a village in Russia’s Republic of Karelia.
Nina buzzed them up. But after greeting her mother, Nadezhda stopped: she had forgotten her puppies in the car, she said, and she was worried they would freeze if she didn’t cover them with a blanket. When she returned to the vehicle, Nadezhda got back inside and looked up at the glowing apartment window.
Two hours later, the light in the window went out. After another hour, Pavel came out of the building, got in the car, and asked Nadezhda if she had any napkins.
His hands were covered in blood. He pulled a washcloth-wrapped knife out of his left sleeve and tucked it under the floor mat, then threw some cash on the dashboard.
The next day, one of Nina Belova’s friends tried to call her. When she didn’t pick up after several attempts, the friend got worried and went to check on her. Finding Nina’s apartment door open, she let herself inside. She walked through the apartment to the kitchen, where she saw Nina’s body lying on the floor.
According to forensic examiners, Nina Belova was stabbed approximately 50 times. Nadezhda Nikolayeva and Pavel Zakharov were arrested four months later. He was charged with murder, and she was charged with incitement to murder.
A rocky relationship
Pavel Zakharov grew up in an orphanage. His first run-in with the law came when he was a teenager: he was sentenced to three years of probation for car theft when he was 18. After that came his first real prison sentence: four and a half years for burglary.
In March 2007, Pavel was released on parole. Four months later, he committed another crime: he and three other young men allegedly robbed four people in a park. Pavel pleaded not guilty in court, claiming he had been drunk and had no memory of the incident. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, though he was released after only six.
After that, he returned to his hometown of Svyatozero, where his sister, Olga, bred German and Central Asian Shepherds with another woman named Nadezhda Nikolayeva. Nadezhda and Pavel soon started dating. Nadezhda adored dogs: she had six of her own, and had an entire album dedicated to them on social media, where she referred to them as her “children.”
But Nadezhda also had a real child: she was raising her daughter, Lera, from a past marriage. In 2015, Lera turned 13. Some years earlier, Lera had unwittingly become the center of a conflict between Nadezhda and her own mother, Nina Belova: according to Nadezhda, Nina was convinced that she, Nadezhda, wouldn’t be able to handle raising a daughter of her own. Nadezhda claims that Nina and her own husband came to Nadezhda’s house one day and took Lera away. It wasn’t until a month later that Nikolayeva found Lera in Nina’s husband’s apartment. In response to that and several other incidents, Nadezhda cut off contact with her mother for years.
Revenge
After they started dating, Nadezhda Nikolayeva often told Pavel stories about her childhood. These stories made Pavel furious.
One involved Nadezhda’s adopted younger brother. Once, Nina had left both children at home and told Nadezhda to look after her brother. The brother ended up falling out of a window and dying. Ever since then, Nina had blamed Nadezhda for the boy’s death.
Nadezhda also told Pavel about her stepdad, who she said had raped her and beaten her when she was little. When she told her mother about the abuse, she didn’t believe her.
According to Pavel’s later accounts, in January 2015, Nadezhda confessed to him that she sometimes had thoughts of “punishing” her mother. In response, he immediately told her that they “weren’t going to talk anymore, [they] were going to act,” and told her to choose a day.
On Nina Belova’s birthday, the couple went from Svyatozera to St. Petersburg. On the way to Nina’s, they stopped at a hunting shop, where Pavel bought a knife.
At 10:00 p.m., after Nadezhda lied about the puppies and left the apartment, Nina was left alone with Pavel. When she went into the kitchen to clean the remaining dishes, Pavel followed her. They spoke for about 10 minutes. As soon as Nina began criticizing Nadezhda’s parenting skills, Pavel got angry. He pulled a knife out of his sleeve and stabbed Nina three times in the back. He then turned the kitchen light off so that they couldn’t be seen from outside. After that, he stabbed her about 40 more times.
Before leaving, he tried to make it look like a random robbery had taken place: he ransacked the apartment in search of anything valuable, but was only able to find 6,000 rubles (about $85). On the way back to Svyatozero, he changed into clean clothes and threw the bloody paper towels, clothing, and knife onto the side of the highway.
Pavel Zakharov pleaded guilty in court, though he claimed Nikolayeva hadn’t incited the murder. Nadezhda told the court that she hadn’t wanted Pavel to kill her mother, and that she and Nina had patched up their relationship in recent years; she asked them to convict her of concealment rather than incitement. In an appeal, Nadezhda said that her initial confessions had been given under duress, as she had been interrogated without a lawyer and it had lasted for almost 24 hours with no break. According to Nadezhda, after she was arrested, an investigator and several officers went to her daughter, Lera, and tried to make her pressure her mother to confess to the charges.
Pavel Zakharov was one of the men in the video; his identity was confirmed by the Telegram channel Rotonda. At the gathering, the mercenaries joked about Wagner Group capturing Alaska and establishing a “Hawaiian People’s Republic.” They also told Prigozhin how his private military company had changed their lives for the better. “Now I have the chance to work, to be useful to my country, to feel like a real man,” one of the men said on camera. “That wasn’t in the cards before.” Unlike most of the men present, Pavel Zakharov was silent throughout the video.
According to Evgeny Prigozhin, all of these pardoned prisoners were released and their Wagner contracts are over. According to Rotonda, however, one of the convicts who was released is still officially part of Wagner Group and is only on leave. Another one, 66-year-old Alexander Tyutin, who was previously sentenced to 23 years in prison for organizing the murder of a four-member family, flew to Turkey in mid-January for a vacation, according to Fontanka.
Holod was unable to reach Pavel Zakharov for comment. His relatives declined to speak to journalists, as did Nadezhda Nikolayeva’s relatives. Nadezhda Nikolayeva herself, who was released from prison about one year ago, also declined to speak.

 Treatment
Beginning
During a bleak spring, a shepherd named Aymer, sets out from his village to start his year-long journey with his flock of sheep. Distant and stoic, his sole purpose is to complete his journey. He makes his way through ancient lands, towering stones decorating the landscape as spring finally begins to bloom. He enters the valley of the Titan’s Teeth, a staggering and imposing mountain range. A band of adventurers spot him on a quest of their own and wave, but they get no response. Dusk settles in and the shepherd’s fire burns low as he drifts off. The smell of smoke is in the air and the sound of crackling permeate his consciousness. Aymer bolts awake and is cruelly greeted by his flock of sheep encased in a burning inferno. He helplessly watches as they squeal before it goes quiet. Suddenly, a roar sounds from the pile and three pairs of eyes open. Bursting from the flames, three dragons soar upwards, their claws grasping the dead sheep. Aymer staggers before collapsing on his knees. He stares at the dragons as they vanish into the night, and he lets out a roar of his own.
Middle
The dull morning light filters over Aymer, still on his knees, hours later. The inferno nothing more than a smoking pile of ash and bone. Listlessly starring at nothing he hears a soft bleat from his right and swivels around. From the brush, a lamb, newly birthed and covered in ash, stumbles out. Aymer stares at the lamb before he nearly growls in anger and stomps out of the campsite, ignoring the lamb. It can die for all he cares. Better off with its family than him. Aymer lost in his head doesn’t notice the lamb following him. He’s jarred out of his mind when he feels a tug on his pack. Swinging around he spots the lamb trying to eat the tassels on his bag. Aymer yells at the lamb to scare it off. It bleats quietly and collapses. Aymer pauses, then sighs. The lamb, too weak to move, urges Aymer to help it. Over the afternoon, Aymer takes his fabric flask and tries to collect milk for the lamb from several uncooperative animals before he’s finally successful. Sated, Aymer and the lamb have arrived at the Gray Sea. Aymer looks across the water, peaceful and calm. He’s hand sneaks towards his chest where he grabs his necklace. A flash of a smiling woman assaults his mind. Unaware, he makes to step into the ocean but is bumped aside by the lamb. He looks down at the lamb and turns away from the shore.
Their journey continues as they walk across grassy mountains, summer finally breezing in. The lamb beings to grow as the weeks pass. It hops around Aymer and interacts with the world. They cross the Giant’s Pass, a massive stone bridge that connects the other side from the chasm below. The greens of the trees around them gain color as fall seeps in. A thundercloud rumbles in the distance and Aymer looks up. Now standing in front of a farmer’s cottage, he and the lamb are drenched. The lamb pushes him forward and he begrudgingly knocks on the door. It opens and he’s swept in. Later that night he rests in the loft of the cottage. Basked in moonlight, a wooden cradle stands out. Aymer slowly gets up and lightly places his hand on the rim of the crib. He’s assaulted by memories and gasps clawing he way out of the house. A pregnant woman. A brand-new cradle. His younger self. Bursting out of the house Aymer collapses to the ground. Looking up he stares at the sky and lets him memories flow. A worried soothsayer. A silent child bundled in cloth and blood. A scream. Darkness consuming everything. Two funeral pyres burning. Aymer sits listlessly in the rain, masking his tears, until the lamb trots up. He looks at the lamb and collects him into his arms realizing that this is his chance for fatherhood that he never thought he would get again.
End
Aymer and the lamb continue the last leg of their journey. Winter blows in as they cross Salamander Lake. They cuddle up to one another at night in front of the fire, Aymer smiling and telling stories about beasts and monsters. They make snow people and creatures as they continue on their journey. They make their way to the mossy foot holds of Troll’s Garden as spring sprouts out of the melting snow. Aymer and the lamb, now fully grown, come to a rest at the top of a hill overlooking their village. The lamb bleats, bounding forward before looking back. Aymer lets out a breath and smiles.

These nodes look like big gray boulders and have jagged lines on them. Stone can be obtained from stone nodes that appear all over the map. You can also use a rock or a Bone Club, but they only have a percentage chance of gathering cloth on each hit, unlike the tools mentioned above. It’s important to note that the only tools capable of getting cloth from the cactus are the stone, metal, improvised hatchets, hammer, and Chainsaw. The more advanced the item, the more stone you’ll get. Simply find one and throw all your unused stone tools and weapons in, and the recycler will break them down into stone. 10/31 PART II - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Terror Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: 10/31 Part 2 is the second installment of the popular Halloween themed anthology series that taps the  directors, actors and composers from the indie film world and brings them all together to tell their tales of terror that pays homage to the classic genre films.
REVIEW: 10/31 PART 2 is anthology series that has all the bells and whistles of the grindhouse type films we would go see as double features at second run cinemas. The anthology features a few shorts presented as trailers (The October Kids, Trucksquatch, Treaters, Apache Hatchet Massacre 2 and The Candy Taker)  and three short films (Malvolia, A Samhain Liturgy, Sister Mary, and Dead Lift). The trailer presentations reflect a variety of styles of genre films that begin this trip down memory lane. You can’t go wrong with a trailer when they are done well. They present just enough plot points so you get the story concept. The four long narratives offer a variety of different types of genre tales and are engaging. There are a few moments when the dialogue falls flat but for the most part the dialogue and plots are engaging.
For a home grown independent production each of the filmmakers show an excellent and creative working knowledge of their craft. The level of the special effects vary a bit between productions, but overall they were solid for a low budget production. There are some good locations, skilled editing, and good shot framing. Producer Rocky Gray also scored the film. He provides some excellent compositions that are reminiscent of numerous classic genre films, and clearly a nod to the scores of John Carpenter.
Overall, the talent was solid. Some of the trailer segments had performances that were a bit kitschy, and once in a while a line delivered is worthy of a groan, but even the dark stories you never lose that sense of overall fun.
10/31 PART 2 is guerilla filmmaking at its finest. I’m not typically a fan of films that try to pay homage to classic genre films, but this anthology gets it right. You feel that they are paying homage to these classic films, and not trying to remake them or reinvent the genre. The films take their craft seriously and have fun with the material. There are some excellent makeup effects and I loved the score. Yes, it’s gory but there’s nothing here that you could sit down and watch with the tween members of the family. There is some real talent in front of and behind the camera, and I’m interested to see what they do next.

The meeting concludes in a way that is more than satisfactory to the Emperor, if not so satisfactory to the rest of the Council.
Jiang FengMian is to retain his title of High Councilor, but only to soften the blow of the abrupt transition of power. A period of five years has been determined as sufficient for this task. Uncle Jiang will use those years to guide his replacement in the court intricacies and details of his responsibilities, which will ensure full transparency in this particular shift of power.
The choice of the next High Councilor had been the bloodiest battle of the day, one that had drawn the meeting to a standstill for hours. Wei Ying would not budge from his choice however, and once fully aware of his intentions, uncle Jiang had given his firm and unquestionable support. With uncle XingChen’s help, they had wrangled the Council into submission, skillfully enough where Wei Ying had felt guilty, all over again, for nearly causing uncle Jiang to qi deviate that very morning.
Shijie will make an excellent High Councilor. Behind her gentle voice and agreeable manner, there is strength of conviction that the Sect Leaders will find as unyielding as a rocky mountain side. Wei Ying cannot wait to see her turn all that sweet charm and strength of will against Sect Leader Yao, or any of the other men long accustomed to Jiang FengMian’s flexibility. Wei Ying may actually start attending Sect Leader meetings regularly, just for entertainment’s sake.
With the High Councilor being forced into retirement within five years, and the Council itself on the verge of dissolving, the question of the Emperor’s marriage to a Second Young Master of a disgraced Sect is no longer as grave as it would have appeared under less serious circumstances. It was immediately apparent which Sect Leaders had spent their morning in close talks with the Royal Companion. These men, fidgeting and nervous, had voiced their support for the marriage before Wei Ying could even fully voice his intentions.
He had never felt the need to ask A-Sang what particular leverage he has over certain sect leaders, or how he had come to obtain it. A-Sang has always been eerily skilled at ferreting out their secrets and honing in on their weaknesses. The information A-Sang has on them must be significant, because they would not be influenced to withdraw their support, regardless of the pressure from the other Council members.
Wei Ying is allowed to marry anyone he chooses, Lan Zhan included.
It is a good day, and he feels immeasurably happy leaving the council hall, watching the Sect Leaders drift away in a daze, as if physically beaten into submission. He had promised Lan Zhan that he would give him time to speak with his uncle, to speak with his brother, to consult with the Lan Sect Elders. He had promised as much time as Lan Zhan wants or needs. Still, it is a struggle not to immediately seek him out and make the proposal again, properly this time, with all the pomp and ceremony.
He will not. He will be patient. But.
Someone should inform Lan Zhan that the Council has reached a favorable decision. This is not information that Lan Zhan should obtain second-hand, through gossip and idle chatter. Wei Ying will not pressure him, but informing him that the Council had given its unanimous approval would be the proper, respectful thing to do. It is nowhere near the thing Wei Ying actually wants to do, which is to fall to his knees and latch on to Lan Zhan’s ankles and beg him to agree to the marriage now.
Perhaps if he only strolled by the Imperial guest chambers. Casually. And happened to catch the sight of Lan Zhan, perhaps he could--
“Wei WuXian!”
The shout echoes against the high ceiling, rebounding down the hallway with force.
There is only one person who would dare shout his name in the Jade Sword Palace, and that person is currently waiting for him at the South Lakes Pavilion. Also, A-Cheng rarely disrespects him in public, unless Wei Ying has done something truly obnoxious.
He turns to find Jin ZiXuan striding down the hallway, his sword drawn, his face red and furious.
Uh-oh Wei Ying thinks.
He had forgotten all about him.
“Wei WuXian!! How dare you!?”
His voice is nearly obliterated by the sound of blades being drawn all around them, both Imperial Guards and the Jiang Sect forming a wall in front of Wei Ying. Jin GuangShan, who is not the member of the Council, and yet, is always somehow found hovering in the vicinity of every Council meeting, throws himself in front of Jin ZiXuan.
Wei Ying has never before seen Jin GuangShan look visibly terrified; it is not nearly as amusing as he had expected it to be.
“What are you standing there for?” he snaps at the four disciples following behind Jin ZiXuan, all four clearly distraught, “Grab him.”
Jin ZiXuan wheels on the four disciples, sword at the ready, as if daring them to try.
“Please forgive my son, Your Majesty,” Jin GuangShan exclaims, “He has been ill lately, and speaking nonsense. We have had him confined for his own safety. I will take him back immediately. ZiXuan, your mother must be worried to death! Let us go back.”
Jin ZiXuan is practically vibrating. Wei Ying has never seen the Young Master of the Jin Sect this overwrought; he would not have thought it possible.
The dignified, puffed-up peacock is acting like an absolute madman. It is fascinating to watch. Wei Ying wishes A-Sang was here to see it for himself.
“I demand an account of the Emperor!” the youth shouts, “I demand to know why my betrothal was dissolved! I have the right to know!”
“You have a right to nothing!” Jin GuangShan shouts in his face, his beard quivering in agitation, “It is not on you to question the Emperor! Your Majesty,” he turns to Wei Ying, his smile sickly, “As you can see, he is not well. Please do not listen to anything he says. This illness is a personal matter, one that will be resolved quickly.”
“I am not ill!” Jin ZiXuan shakes off his father’s insistent grip to point his sword at Wei Ying, as if unaware of the three dozen swords that point at him in turn, “I demand an answer!”
Wei Ying does not have an answer, at least not an answer that would satisfy Jin ZiXuan. The dissolution of the engagement was nothing more than a power move in a game he had intended to win at any cost.
Shijie knows that Wei Ying will eventually allow the marriage to take place. He would never deny her happiness for his own gain, even if he cannot possibly comprehend what happiness can be gained from marrying into the Jin Sect.
But Jin ZiXuan does not know that the dissolution of his betrothal is not a permanent measure. And apparently, he feels quite strongly about this, a revelation that is somehow both satisfactory and annoying.
“Your Majesty,” Jiang FengMian says, “I do believe that Jin ZiXuan must be seriously ill. Otherwise, he would never act like this. Please allow Sect Leader Jin to take his son back. We will summon the Head Healer immediately.”
Jin ZiXuan looks as if he may stab the next person who suggests that he is ill.
“Nonsense,” Sect Leader Yao exclaims, just when his opinion is least wanted or needed, “No illness excuses such disrespect. Any man who speaks to the Emperor in this way should be accused of inciting rebellion, and his life be made forfeit.”
Jin GuangShan looks horrified. Jiang FengMain grimaces into his beard.
Wei Ying does not want to laugh, but it is incredibly difficult to keep a straight face. Sect Leader Yao, who would slander his own mother if it gained him favor, accusing someone else of disrespect. A-Sang will be furious he has missed this performance.
“Put him in the dungeons for now,” Wei Ying says, “Let us see if his head cools. Do not hurt him!” he adds quickly, as the Imperial guard advances to seize Jin ZiXuan’s sword.
Predictably, Jin ZiXuan fights them, and predictably, he loses, although Wei Ying has to admit that the boy’s skills are fairly decent.
“Your Majesty,” uncle Jiang begins, his voice concerned, “the Young Master’s illness--“
“He is not ill,” Wei Ying snorts quietly, so his voice would not carry to Sect Leader Yao, “He is young, stupid, and angry. I identify, but cannot condone such behavior in public.”
“Your Majesty,” Jin GuangShan is kneeling, his face as gray as the stone arch behind him, “I beg leniency for my son. He is truly not well--“
“Sect Leader,” Wei Ying interrupts coldly, “Do not invite me to speak words we may both regret in the future. Your son had drawn his sword with the intent to cause harm to the Emperor. What possible leniency can you seek that I have not already shown?”
Jin GuangShan says nothing else, and his silence is somehow more unsettling than all the falsehoods that so frequently spill out of his mouth. He remains kneeling even as Wei Ying gathers his escort, and continues down the hallway as if nothing of significance had occurred.
“This will cause problems, Your Majesty,” uncle Jiang says softly.
“Then do your job, and ensure that it does not.”

The Pillar of First Blood – A 15ft dark stone pillar that has engraved writing on each side ‘The spot where the first blood was split between a batch of common devils”.
The Drawing Moss – A smooth stone with a bunch of growing moss on it. Touching the stone with a bare hand results in the moss slowing moving to wherever was touched. On the stone are several handprints and doodles perfectly covered over with the moss.
Curci’s Crypt – A small white stone structure deep in the woods with carvings of trees on each side. Entering brings you into the hidden crypt of Curci.
The Crumbling Shack – Far away from any civilization lays what once was a small shack. The windows are broken, some walls have crumbled away, and parts of the roof are open and fallen in.
Trio of Faces – On the side of a rocky cliff are a well carved trio of protruding faces all looking the same direction
Cone Shaped Prison – In the middle of a grassy field stands an 8ft slim cone made of iron bars, in the middle of the structure lies a sun-bleached skeleton bound in iron shackles.
The Tree of Sacrifice – A abnormally large and oddly pale brown tree where the branches are twisted, and the leaves are a sickly saturated green color. At the base of the tree lies a blood stained alter that the roots of the tree have grown around it and now hold it in place. The base of the tree as well as the ground around the alter are permanently stained a deep red. If the tree is cut, a thick blood sap seeps out of wound. If a creature is sacrificed on the alter, the blood pools near where the roots touch the alter and are absorbed while what appear to be veins appear on the tree that go up into the branches.
The Bone Pit – In an open field there is a 10ft wide and 50ft deep pit with no life growing around it. The walls of this chasm are lined with dark cobblestone and going down there are three uneven sized holes that are covered by iron bars. At the bottom there are a large pile of bones.
The Odd Stone Slab – A big square stone slab rests hidden near the side of the road. Carved into the slab is a symbol and a riddle that upon answering correctly leads to a small dungeon.
The Copper Fox – A 4ft oxidized copper statute of a fox with a small locked box in its mouth and two ruby eyes.
The Pointing Eagle – On top of a large rock formation is a big iron statue of an eagle pointing its body to the east.
The Feasting Table – Out away from any kind of civilization sits a large gray solid stone table with ancient carvings on the sides. Upon its surface are newly lit candles and a banquet of food that seems to be warm, fresh, and untouched by its surroundings. If one where to eat or take anything from the table, the next day it would be completely restocked and replenished.
The Jeweled Bush – A seemingly average looking berry bush that happens to grow small jewels instead of berries. If one where to try and consume one of the jewels picked off of the bush within 24hrs, that person gains a temporary magical effect or bonus, otherwise it’s a normal jewel.
The Ice Blood Spot – Located on the cliff face of a large mound of ice there is one spot that is dark red instead of the pure blue that surrounds it.
Dragon’s Graveyard – in a valley, there are 8-10 adult dragon skeletons, half-buried.
Petunia, the Land Whale – A large whale skeleton surrounded by petunias. The whale is miles away from the sea and the petunias aren’t native to this location.
Wondrous Obelisk – an obelisk, comprised of rose quartz and decorated with sylvan runes, appears to be of fey origin. it is surrounded in a 120-foot field of wild magic.
The Old Folk Hero – A half erected statue of an old folk hero. Either under construction or half crumbled.
The Hope Tree – It’s an oak tree with the word hope carved into it in large letters. No one knows who did it or why, but it’s turned into a useful landmark for the local village.
The Moon’s Egg – It’s a massive dome-like stone formation that shines pearlescent in the moonlight. It lays in a bare outcropping of rock and is warm to the touch.
Hollering Pit – A 50ft deep sinkhole. Well-hidden at the bottom is the lair of an accomplished burglar who calls himself the Jeweler. He’s too old to do much in the way of harm, but the countless traps he installed are not.
The Painted Cliff Face – A cliff that has been entirely covered in paint from hundreds of people.
Threeshades Tower- A weathered, ivy-mantled square tower atop a small hill. Has three levels, and each is built from a different kind of stone. The longsword stuck in one of the bricks on the top level is +1 and can project the bearer’s voice up to 50’ away.
Pigeons’ Chest – an ornate, but empty, chest of silver and pearl sitting by the road. It will not move by any means yet discovered, material nor magical.
The Ol’ Inn – The ancient ruins of a strangely ‘modern-looking’ tavern located in the deepest patches of forest. No path leads to it, no other buildings or ruins are found besides it, but dozens of deformed footsteps can be found heading out of the site. At night, the faint, muffled sound of a single viol can be heard coming out of the muddy floor.
The Forgotten Emperor’s Statue – An incredibly detailed, broken bust of a young wood elf, bearing a red crown. Its nose and left ear are missing and where its left eye should be, the socket is destroyed, and a monstrously decomposed snake eye can be found. The base has a bronze plaque which reads (in broken Celestial): ‘The only one truly meant to rule’, followed by a name which seems scratched out.
The Candle Trees – deep in the woods, a small group of trees whose leaves are bright red. They contrast starkly with the normal trees around them. The Candle trees appear otherwise normal, but the dried leaves can be brewed into a tea that warms the bones even on the coldest nights.
Tale of a Desert’s Origin – A granite obelisk in the desert with glyphs on it. It seems to tell the tale of a very powerful magic user stealing all the life from this area, killing all the plants and turning it into a desert.
The Waning Waterfall – a small waterfall that appears to reverse direction on every night with a bright full moon, running up instead of down.
The Sandmount – There’s a strange dune of sand in the middle of this grassy field, covered in scorpions.

[Exclusive] Interview with Lindsay Schoolcraft of Cradle of Filth and 10/31 Soundtrack
New Post has been published on https://nofspodcast.com/exclusive-interview-lindsay-schoolcraft-cradle-filth-contributor-horror-anthology-1031/
[Exclusive] Interview with Lindsay Schoolcraft of Cradle of Filth and 10/31 Soundtrack
When I learned Lindsay Schoolcraft would be contributing to the soundtrack of Rocky Gray’s upcoming Horror Anthology, 10/31, I had to reach out.
Lindsay and I share mutual friends, growing up only towns apart. And, also being among the few gothic persuasion in our neighbourhood, I followed Lindsay and her rising solo career under the name Schoolcraft, and silently cheered her on in 2013 when she joined iconic dark metal band, Cradle of Filth.  Lindsay continued on with the band, serving as live keys and back-up vocals, as well as contributing the female vocals, keyboard, and harp on the bands’ most recent albums; Hammer of the Witches (2015), and Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay (2017).
And, with the recent release of Cradle of Filth’s Cryptoriana, her work on a highly anticipated solo album, as well as contributing to the soundtrack of an upcoming horror movie, we had much to discuss! Read on for our exclusive interview with Lindsay Schoolcraft.
Nightmare on Film Street: This interview all came about because I stumbled across your involvement in the soundtrack for Rocky Gray’s upcoming Horror Anthology, 10/31. Anything you can tell us about the project?
Lindsay Schoolcraft: Rocky and I have been in talks about collaborating together for quite some time now. We were just waiting for the right opportunity and project to come up. Earlier this year he asked me if I would be interested in doing a song with him on his horror anthology soundtrack. Of course I agreed to it because Rocky and his work with Evanescence has been a huge influence on me since my teens. So far the writing process has gone smoothly. He is easy to work with and trusts my abilities as a writer, which is a huge compliment coming from him.
NOFS: Is this your first forray into Horror? Any interest in contributing to future soundtracks or scores?
LS: This definitely is. It’s also my first contribution to an original track that will be exclusively for a movie. I was trying to pick Rocky’s brain for theme ideas on how to approach the lyrics for this song. I want the listener to fall into a story and give them a sense of storytelling and finding their own perception or take on the story they are hearing. I was asking for what the stories were like in the flick, he said “just make it spooky and open to your own idea”. At first it was difficult, but then the ideas started coming. I am just completing the lyrics over the next few days.
I am slowly getting into the horror world. I’ve never been massively into slasher flicks, I’m more of a sci-fi and fantasy fan. I am looking forward to seeing what Rocky has created with 10/31.
Depending on how well this song is received I would be interested in doing more soundtrack contributions in the future. I find there is less pressure with one track verses doing a whole album and making a group of songs cohesive to one another. There is more freedom in one track.
NOFS: So much of the tone and mood in Horror is set by the particular film’s score a music choices. Do you have any personal favorite scores or soundtracks that inspire you?
LS: Thanks to Dani Filth the Dracula soundtrack has really grown on me. I would have to say the soundtrack that has had the biggest influence on me is from The Queen of The Damned. It’s influenced a lot of my work and never grows old for me.
NOFS: The latest album from Cradle of Filth; Cryptoriana- The Seductiveness of Decay, just dropped last week. What can we expect from the new album?
LS: It’s different then what we’ve done before in many ways. The guys really pushed themselves to compose their best on it. The addition of the choirs is what really ties it together. Also it is one of our more thrash driven albums too. So far the feedback has been great, I’m happy everyone is enjoying it!
NOFS: The recently released Music Video for your single Heartbreak and Seance is a beautiful, moving vignette of classic Victorian, Gothic imagery; soft snow falling among dead trees, wax dripping from the candles of a silent altar. Can you tell us a little bit about the process of creating that video? What was the experience like bringing the single to life?
LS: Oh thank you! It was a magical time and full of great memories. We flew out to Riga, Latvia to work with Arthur Berzinsh, which had done the album artwork for our past two albums. We love his work and he really understands us and what we need visually to match our music. This was definitely the biggest music video production I had been a part of since joining the band. Dani had also mentioned that it was one of the biggest video production that band has had in a long time. The crew and makeup artists were a treat to work with and we made it happen in just two days. I believe after we left there was more filming happening for two days after we left. It shows in the results. I’m really happy I could be a part of it.
vimeo
NOFS: Both in the music video and during your stage performances, you always wear such amazing headpieces and unique, gothic inspired fashion. Can you tell us a little bit about your fashion influences?
LS: Oh thank you! The lot of my headdresses are made by Hysteria Machine, but for the new music video I got Morgan Lander of Kittie to design my crystal deer skull headpiece under her line Thelema Crystal Skulls.
My influence and ideas change every few months. I have definitely been on a long black evening gown kick the past few years, I have a feeling that will change starting mid next year. My dress designs come about with whatever I’m feeling at the time and the influence of the time of year. I find I get more inspiration in the autumn in winter months for my image as apposed to spring in summer where I get more of my musical creativity from.
I usually carry a small sketch book with me on tour and sketch all my ideas into them as they come up. They aren’t the best doodles in the world, but they are passable until I can bring the headdress or the dress to the designers.
NOFS: Your previous album with Cradle of Filth, Hammer of the Witches, was inspired by the infamous persecution of suspected witchcraft. Were there any specific real-life or fictional stories/films that inspired you when creating the album?
LS: Usually the theme of the music doesn’t come until later and it’s decided by Dani. With Hammer of The Witches we just started writing and picked the best of what came about. Of course there was a theme of darkness with anger and sadness when we wrote that album. In the beginning we never know just what Dani will make the theme. He often needs the music first because he can start getting creative.
NOFS: The Female audience tends to be under-represented in both the Metal and Horror communities, though we make up a growing, significant (and badass) chunk of their fan-bases. Is there any advice you have for those macabre and creative gals who are interested in exploring a darker career-path?
LS: It’s a learn-as-you-go experience so I don’t really know what advice I can offer. You just have to be you and find out what is is that you can uniquely offer with your own little added flair. If you told me 6 years ago that I would be the creepy woman in Cradle of Filth to sing backings and play the keyboard I would have never believed you. But it happened and here we are. I was slowly moving away from the dark fashion and look that I loved so much just before I got the offer to join and then I just got sucked right back into it. It’s definitely been fun to experiment and find my look with makeup though!
NOFS: Speaking of which- what’s it like being the only Female in a Dark Metal band?
LS: It’s nothing different really. Sure, I am a nurturing person and I get sucked into the role of being the “tour mom” with handing out band-aids and being thoughtful and caring when others break themselves. But it’s nice to be a part of something and represent the feminine aspect, which is something I take very seriously considering some people consider me a role model.
NOFS: Do you have any personal favorite Horror Movie Go-To’s on the road?
LS: Would Repo! The Genetic Opera count? It’s pretty much my favourite movie ever!
NOFS: It totally counts. In addition to Cradle of Filth, you are also half of Black Metal duo Antiqva, and release music solo under Schoolcraft. Do you have any projects in the near future you can tease? Also, do you ever find downtime?
LS: Downtime? What’s that? Haha.
Antiqva is coming together, but very slowly. Which isn’t a bad thing because we get to take our time and make sure we are happy with everything we are constructing. I’m honestly very excited about this project. There is a lot of freedom to take my time and experiment and build the orchestral sections as one of the main composers.
As a solo artist my main debut is almost done being recorded and should be out sometime next year. I think people will freak when they find out who I wrote the album with and who the guest singers are. This has been my biggest accomplishment as a song writer so far. It’s the music I have always wanted to make and I think the fans will really dig it. I did my best to be as honest and humble as possible when creating this album. I wanted to tell stories and really pull the listener into the songs. It’s been a long journey and we are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
As for free time though: I mainly just play around on my harp or watch cartoons. Of course I’m still slowly self teaching myself the wonderful world of makeup artistry. I’ve also been slowly piecing together new song for my next solo release. It’s a never ending process.
NOFS: Where can readers of Nightmare on Film Street find and follow more from you?
LS: You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr. My Facebook page is www.facebook.com/Schoolcraftofficial  And don’t forget to check out 10/31’s indiegogo campaign at http://igg.me/at/1031movie
Cradle of Filth’s latest album, Cryptoriana: The Seductiveness of Decay is available now. The band will be kicking off their European Tour in the Late Fall. Tour details can be found here.  Horror Anthology 10/31 is currently funding on Indiegogo with a little over a week remaining.

71 Springsteen Prompts
Anyway, I felt like making my own prompt list for some reason, all are taken from Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics. Enjoy!
1. Now laying here in the dark, you're like an angel on my chest. (Backstreets) 2. I'll love you with all the madness in my soul. (Born to Run) 3. I believe in the love that you gave me. (Badlands) 4. In the darkness I hear somebody call my name. (Streets of Fire) 5. Well, if she wants to see me, you can tell her that I'm easily found. (Darkness on the Edge of Town) 6. There's so much that you want, you deserve much more than this. (Prove It All Night) 7. Like a river that don't know where it's flowing, I took a wrong turn and I just kept going. (Hungry Heart) 8. To say I'll make your dreams come true would be wrong. But maybe, darlin', I could help them along. (I Wanna Mary You) 9. Is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse? (The River) 10. You just stood there and held me, then you started dancin' slow. And as I pulled you tighter I swore I'd never let you go. (Point Blank) 11. Somewhere back along the line you lost your love and I lost your trust. (Fade Away) 12. I just wanna sleep tonight again in your arms. (Drive All Night) 13. Maybe everything that dies someday comes back. (Atlantic City) 14. She said, "I'm sorry, son, but no one by that name lives here anymore." (My Father's House) 15. Tell me now, baby, is he good to you? And can he do to you the things that I do? (I'm On Fire) 16. There's a joke here somewhere and it's on me. (Dancing in the Dark) 17. He'd tousle my hair and say 'son take a good look around, this is your hometown.' (My Hometown) 18. Well there's another dance. All you gotta do is say yes. (Tougher than the Rest) 19. We'll fill this house with all the love. (All That Heaven Will Allow) 20. Man meets woman and they fall in love. But the house is haunted and the ride gets rough. (Tunnel of Love) 21. I just can't see what a woman like you is doing with me. (Brilliant Disguise) 22. With just the shirt on my back, I left and swore I'd never look back. (When You're Alone) 23. I just want to feel you in my arms. (Human Touch) 24. I love to see your hair shining in the long summer's light. (I Wish I Were Blind) 25. I'm tired of waitin' for tomorrow to come. (The Ghost of Tom Joad) 28. Your smile girl, brings the mornin' light to my eyes. (Waiting on a Sunny Day) 29. Just an empty impression in the bed where you used to be. (Empty Sky) 30. When I look into your eyes we stand worlds apart. (Worlds Apart) 31. There's a lot of walls need tearing down. Together we could take them down one by one. (Let's Be Friends (Skin to Skin)) 32. I got a picture of you in my locket. I keep it close to my heart. (Mary's Place) 33. Children are asking if it's alright. Will you be in our arms tonight? (You're Missing) 34.
