10/31 PART II - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Terror Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: 10/31 Part 2 is the second installment of the popular Halloween themed anthology series that taps the  directors, actors and composers from the indie film world and brings them all together to tell their tales of terror that pays homage to the classic genre films.
REVIEW: 10/31 PART 2 is anthology series that has all the bells and whistles of the grindhouse type films we would go see as double features at second run cinemas. The anthology features a few shorts presented as trailers (The October Kids, Trucksquatch, Treaters, Apache Hatchet Massacre 2 and The Candy Taker)  and three short films (Malvolia, A Samhain Liturgy, Sister Mary, and Dead Lift). The trailer presentations reflect a variety of styles of genre films that begin this trip down memory lane. You can’t go wrong with a trailer when they are done well. They present just enough plot points so you get the story concept. The four long narratives offer a variety of different types of genre tales and are engaging. There are a few moments when the dialogue falls flat but for the most part the dialogue and plots are engaging.
For a home grown independent production each of the filmmakers show an excellent and creative working knowledge of their craft. The level of the special effects vary a bit between productions, but overall they were solid for a low budget production. There are some good locations, skilled editing, and good shot framing. Producer Rocky Gray also scored the film. He provides some excellent compositions that are reminiscent of numerous classic genre films, and clearly a nod to the scores of John Carpenter.
Overall, the talent was solid. Some of the trailer segments had performances that were a bit kitschy, and once in a while a line delivered is worthy of a groan, but even the dark stories you never lose that sense of overall fun.
10/31 PART 2 is guerilla filmmaking at its finest. I’m not typically a fan of films that try to pay homage to classic genre films, but this anthology gets it right. You feel that they are paying homage to these classic films, and not trying to remake them or reinvent the genre. The films take their craft seriously and have fun with the material. There are some excellent makeup effects and I loved the score. Yes, it’s gory but there’s nothing here that you could sit down and watch with the tween members of the family. There is some real talent in front of and behind the camera, and I’m interested to see what they do next.
