rocketbeagle i really needa play that game
i'm gonna use this as an excuse to ramble about Hades because I have so many thoughts
mostly that i was sorry worried this game wouldn't work for me, and it really does and i'm relieved. I love the first two Supergiant Games titles but the third one was a huge flop for me because the pacing was so bad (it's like all the combat of Hades, separated by like an hour of slow visual novel-style cutscenes, and that's just the ten-hour-long intro that i didn't bother to play past)
but in every one of their games Supergiant does an amazing job at mix-and-matching modifying elements? like mostly which weapon to use, and which improvements to add to which part of that weapon? and there's dozens of different combinations (Hades has at least hundreds) which makes each approach to combat feel fresh
in the first two, i could build up combinations that I liked best that were radically different from combinations another player would choose, but in Hades it's all randomized since they've made it a rogue-like, so i find myself making a run without any of my favorite add-ons... and often still doing OK, with the alternative add-ons I picked up only out of necessity??
the repetition honestly feels a lot like the repetition in Outer Wilds, because as much as i gain during a run, i need the run to start over to use most of it. so I'm not frustrated by the repeats so much as able to use them to move forward still? even though i WOULD like to be able to skip past the sections of the 'dungeon' i've completed multiple times now *sideeyes Meg*
(also there IS an easy mode i could turn on but i haven't needed to yet? I don't think I turned it on in any of the previous Supergiant games, i hate dying over and over but Hades makes dying over and over literally a part of your advancement which is fun)
ALSO to get back to the FEAT of coding that this company accomplishes?? the voice actors must have had to record HOURS and HOURS of dialogue and I'll never hear half of it because they're lines that only occur if X and Y just happened while A is true but B is false or so on - like, its super complicated keeping track of all of the variables and even AAA companies ignore it sometimes, but none of the NPC lines feel poorly placed (yknow the way video games sometimes do, where someone's coded to say 'hope you kill that enemy!' even though you already have, because there's no variable to change the line)
the other thing Supergiant does well is having something going on in the world that the player can see peripherally but can't do anything about - for Hades, it's the fact that something's wrong in the underworld, possibly even the regular world too, and I don't know what. also it doesn't change the fact that I'm just trying to get Zag out of the underworld. like I'm seeing these hints and there's more clues in the dialogue and i'm so freaking anxious to get to the surface and see how it's not what i expected, but it doesn't change what i'm doing. it just adds tension and it's delicious
also, important, Zagreus sometimes makes snarky comments and half the time I have made that same comment seconds before he does so we're basically twins

The Bet (3/4)
For those of you who have not read the previous 2 (or eight, depending on whether you’re reading the whole series) chapters, Frederick is Aziraphale’s emotional support snake who he got while Crowley was taking one of his extra, extra year-long naps. You can read more about the whole thing in the Serpent and the Seagull series on AO3.
Also check out this great fan art of Frederick from RocketBeagle!
Chapter 1  /  Chapter 2
Chapter 3 . . Frederick was not, in general, a worrier. Most snakes were not. But he had to admit, he was beginning to feel a strange sensation that was not unlike concern about the two large creatures he lived with. They appeared to be deliberately antagonizing each other almost to the point of distraction, and it was interfering with his nap schedule.
He became particularly worried after the soft, fluffy one yelled loudly at the hard, pointy one and then stormed out, jacket in hand. It was unlike the fluffy one to yell, after all. Frederick was used to viewing him as an almost endless source of good will, snacks, and head boops.
The pointy one also appeared to be not his usual self. After the pale, rounder creature left, Frederick noted, his dark, brimstone-smelling friend wandered around the shop touching things and looking significantly more slouchy and bedraggled than usual.
He eventually sat down on the stool next to Frederick’s perch beside the cash register and began talking to him quietly.
++
“Do you think I overdid it?” Crowley asked Frederick. Of course, he knew the snake couldn’t talk back – he was, as far as he knew, the only talkingserpent in the world.
YES OF COURSE YOU DID, YOU GIANT PILLOCK, Frederick tried to convey through body language. From Crowley’s perspective, this came off as a simple tightening of various coils and loops.
“I didn’t mean to upset him,” Crowley admitted. “Just playing the game, is all. Thought he was going to smite me for a minute, there.” He thought for a few minutes while the snake flicked his tongue at him impatiently.
APOLOGIZE TO THE GIANT FLUFFBALL, Frederick shouted psychically, to no avail.
“Perhaps I should apologize. Get him a little gift. A book usually helps when I’m in the hot seat,” Crowley said. “Where did I put my laptop when I moved in?”
He usually did his shopping on Aziraphale’s ancient desktop computer, which he would miracle to work faster than normal, but for this he wanted his own computer with its processing speed faster than a team of snails pulling a sledge. He dug for a good forty-five minutes through various boxes he had never quite finished unpacking, and eventually pulled out his top-of-the-line, high-powered laptop with a flourish.
“Aha!” he said. “Now I’ll just see what’s on the market in terms of highly impressive rare books, and I’ll be back in the angel’s good graces in no time!”
He sat down at the kitchen table, opened the laptop screen, hit the power button, and waited. And waited. And continued to wait.
It took him a full five minutes of staring at it in confusion before realization dawned, all at once.
The power cord. He had thrown it away with the packaging because, to date, none of his electronics had ever needed a power cord to function. They just functioned without batteries, cords, and chargers because he willed them to.
With a groan, he slammed the screen shut and tried out a few of his favorite curse words. Frederick, sensing his distress, supportively joined him by hissing at the offending metal box.
“Ok, fine,” he shouted to the room at large. “I’ll just go out and shop like a normal person! You won’t break me!”
Crowley headed out into the neighborhood on foot, badly needing to burn off some energy and tension. He sorely missed the ability to magic a bit of mischief on various people he passed on the street. He made up for it by committing random acts of civic disobedience – crossing against the light, dropping his recyclable coffee cup in the trash bin, and giving incorrect directions to tourists. It cheered him up just a little bit.

rocketbeagle: for me the little dots you click on to show this are there for me sometimes, and sometimes not. so sometimes i can interract with an ad and say i dont want to see it and others i cant do anything about it
agh that's frustrating. i only accidentally stumbled on it and tested it on one other ad so i assumed it was just always there. there was a post going around last week about a bad ad and how we needed a feature to be able to report ads, so I though maybe there WAS a method and it was just hidden (like the way tumblr hides useful features yknow?)

@rocketbeagle you didn’t have a Valentine’s box so I’m just gonna leave this on your desk at recess, OK?
(taped to the valentine is a note that says ‘Sorry, the lollipops that came with the pack got smashed... so I got you a better one, too!’. Taped to the note is a small lollipop that’s broken in a few places, as well as a large lollipop shaped like a heart. Fashioned around the stem of the large lollipop is a shrinky dink charm that looks like a small solar system.)
Happy Valentine’s Day!

rocketbeagle i kinda like seraph
I'm leaning that way too, I'm just not liking knowing that I'd probably end up shortening it to 'Sarah' because, as pretty as I feel that name is, I did want something a little more... weird?
so I could elongate it to "Seraphin' but I could also make it more hard, and go 'Serif'? basically pronounced the same way but then I think of typefaces when I say it, which is still computer related?
idk liam i'm overthinking this

rocketbeagle: im so sorry you got injured! hope it gets better soon...!
thank you Liam for the well wishes from days ago that I forgot to ever reply to! it actually IS better you can hardly tell I'm injured at all? when i first took the bandaid off i thought it was gonna look so gross but... it looks almost fine?
also there's kind of a funny homestuck story i want to tell related to my injury! but I want to prelude by saying i hate hearing about peoples injuries, so if anyone reading this does too this is your content warning
basically what happened, in the cleanest terms possible, is i lightly pierced my fingernail with the needle on the machine. it bled but not that much, and it's obviously scabbed up under the nail but it should be unnoticable after a few weeks. this is also like the most common sewing machine injury, and the least painful/damaging version of that injury, so i'm super lucky
the part i find funny, though, is that i got to name these sewing machines at work, and i named them 'Rose' and 'Mary' after the Homestuck lesbians (since Kanaya sews and Rose also works with textiles with her knitting). so of course it was Rose, with her needlekind strife specibus, that I got hurt on. stabbed by Rose's needle. it was inevitable

rocketbeagle replied to your post “what should i bring with me for when i’m sitting in the hotel room for...”
the pain was really only bad the first couple of days, and the narcotics really helped. then it died down. my surgeon did the surgery in a way that meant i didnt have to use drains, so i dont know how those will affect the recovery process
i honestly dont know if i’m getting drains and im kinda anxious about that?? because i read one (1) comment from someone whose surgeon DIDN”T give them drains, and it like messed up their recovery or something, so automatically now i’m like ready to get drains if thats what i need (nothing can go wrong) but also drains=painful?
anyway ok yes, i’ll bring the switch

rocketbeagle replied to your post: i am once again asking for your support...
cemetary!!
ooh that actually... might work too...
i was kind of thinking of, like, a slightly-haunted cliffside trail? based entirely on reading about japanese road yokai recently - it would be a dirt road surrounded by trees on this narrow cliffside, with decorations to suggest yokai and spirits visit often? but idk what those decorations would be

rocketbeagle replied to your post: on day 2 of my animal crossing adventure my friend...
i think maybe each bamboo plant gives one shoot? so it can still grow like crazy but less so than previous games where they gave shoots every couple of days. but idk, i cant find anything online about it. maybe my bamboos just weird
huh well that tracks with what’s been going on so far (i have three right now - one that made one that made one). I was worried that where I put them didn’t have enough room (they’re right between a pond and the edge of a cliff, and technically have one square all around but only one inbetween each)
