I remain more away than around, but I had this almost done, and it’s a quick thing to wrap up.

Summary: After eight years, Jaime Lannister is back to run the Castle Black Race: fourteen dogs, one thousand miles, and a woman who can't stand the sight of him after what he'd done all those years ago.
Things I Love: The details of the race, nature as a beautiful, terrible threat, all the hints of the friendships and connects from the past, the character voices.

Summary: Atop a broken tower, Bran's tunic in Jaime's grasp, some mistakes are harder for Jaime to make the second time around. Westeros's newest champion wishes the gods had picked someone else to send back and re-live their life. Like... oh, anyone with a plan. Or someone who cares. Really, he's not picky.
Things I Love: Bran and Jaime’s friendship, all the things that change and all the things that stay the same, adorable Brienne, Jaime training Bran and Arya, Jaime and the Starklings, Brienne swearing to Robb, the looming threat of the Red Wedding.

Summary: The realm is on the brink of war, and Jaime Lannister is recently widowed following the death of Elia - his wife and the mother of their young son. The hotel’s small restaurant has been turned into a ballroom for the evening, or the closest to one that can be found this far into the Dothraki Sea. It's an illusion for the Westerosi that mingle here now, who drink champagne and murmur amongst themselves of the news of war. They will all be leaving in the morning, to Vaes Dothrak and then wherever home may be; cartographers and pilots and archaeologists who had come to make their fortune while the Westerosi elite longed for the wilds of Essos, the freedom of steppes and plains and the thought of something ancient and new, and now abandon it just as easily.

There is an art to dealing with men like Roose Bolton. It requires a delicate dance of clever words and implicit threats, of deference intertwined with reminders that Jaime is the one with true power. It is a duel, not near so satisfying as swordplay but just as likely to end in bloodshed.
What it does not require is a dinner knife to the throat while surrounded by a castle full of men loyal to him.

Jaime x Brienne Fic Exchange 2021: Update for languageintostillair
Thanks very much to the @jaime-brienne-fic-exchange team for putting this whole thing together once again – your efforts are very much appreciated! I'll start off with my own fics, but I have some shout-outs at the end of this long post.
Without further ado, here are the two very different genre stories I wrote for @albatrossisland:

A Small Patch of Sky

Summary:
‘Stranded with his captor on a barely habitable planet’ is probably up there on the list of inconvenient things that have happened in Jaime Lannister’s lifetime.
It really doesn’t help that he’s also missing a hand.

[Notes] This is a one-shot with lots of unexpected twists and turns, which I somehow managed to conjure up in a week when I realised I wouldn't be able to finish the other story in time. Written from Jaime's POV, it's sort of a take on their road trip, but I can't say much else that won't be better experienced as a surprise. It's a fun one (well, I had fun writing it anyway, barring a few crises) that has some of the vibes of The Mandalorian and stole plot points from an episode of the animation anthology series Love, Death & Robots.

She had given him shelter when she didn’t need to; seen to his wounds and his fever when she didn’t need to. Perhaps it hadn’t seemed like much to her, but they were on different sides of the war, then, and she should have let him bleed out where she found him on the edge of her family’s farm.

[Notes] If you want to read about fifty-year-old Jaime Lannister having a mid-life crisis and unexpectedly falling in love because of it, then boy do I have the story for you! Also, when I say this is set on a farm in a vaguely late-19th-century Westeros, I really mean this in the sense that the farm is just... there? I started writing this even before the exchange was announced, inspired by a (non-weirwood) dream. It's meant to be a quieter, more pared-down exploration of Jaime and Brienne meeting again when they're older, after having led entirely separate lives. At least, it was pared down until they started having emotions and, uh, sex. It's still a WIP, but I do think it's one of my best stories, so I hope you'll give it a chance!

Now that I've gotten the self-promotion out of the way, I'd like to give a shout-out to my lovely gift fic, lay this body down by thebothsandneithers (if this person is on Tumblr, please let me know so I can tag them!). My prompt was the poem ‘Words, Wide Night’ by Carol Ann Duffy, and I never could have imagined that this sweeping canon-adjacent story with soulmate and fairy tale elements would come from it. They did a really admirable job of weaving together their own takes on plot points from canon, all while maintaining this deep connection between Jaime and Brienne, who see each other in their dreams long before meeting in person. There are some killer lines in this story too. Thank you so much again!
I no longer do much reading, so I won't be able to do any recs for this exchange. However, I'd like to recommend the fics by my two irreplaceable betas. First, safe by @it-may-be-dull-but-im-determined (a.k.a. jencat), a compelling and beautifully-written heist fic in which Jaime and Brienne – who have history – work to break into a safe belonging to Petyr Baelish. Also, that safe is on a train. Also, they have sex on that train, naturally. I beta-ed this fic, and I have to say my favourite chapter is the one in which Brienne breaks into the (Valyrian!) safe, and how that whole process interweaves with her memories. It's really elegantly and creatively done. GO READ THIS!
@firesign23 (a.k.a. Roccolinde) surprises absolutely no one by writing more than one fic for this exchange. First, however long the night, the dawn will break again, a World War II AU response to an amazing ‘sexy weapons removal’ prompt. Second, with all the years between us, YET ANOTHER S8 fix-it, which she never seems to tire of writing and always finds new ways of approaching. GO READ THESE TOO!

2023 Fic Stats
February 2023, I decided to start tracking the amount of fic I read. I travelled a lot last year, quite a bit more than normal. I read a lot of fic when I travel.
I did a half year update at the end of June 2023. Between February and June, I read just under 13 million words.

Now that the insanity of the 2021 @jaime-brienne-fic-exchange has slowed down a bit, I wanted to share the TWO wonderful gift fics I received from @firesign23.
The first is however long the night, the dawn will break again which she calls a bastardized WWII AU and I call absolutely lovely. The title comes from the Jason Isbell song However Long, and I love, love that man. It's a song that manages to be both weary and hopeful, and that is exactly the mood of this fic. Jaime and Brienne have a history, and a war between them, and only one night to shut it all away. Read it and flail over lines such as: She could justify a thousand ways—that they risk revealing too much if they speak, that it has been so long and she wants to feel alive, because what better way to pass time if they are observed—but the truth is that she simply wants to, because she can, because she may never have the chance again. Or Her voice is so like her; precise and warm and husky, every word measured because it must be. One day… One day, he would like to see her in peace time, shatter away that careful shell and see every part of her.
My second gift fic (holy shit I got TWO) is an arranged marriage, post canon/S8 but not that S8 lovely story called with all the years between us, and good God there are some killer lines in it. I swear each chapter has at least one that just lays me out on my ass. In a world where Cersei died giving birth to her Greyjoy son, the baby becomes King and Jaime is chosen as Regent. What better way to ensure the Kingslayer isn't scheming than to marry him to the most honorable woman in Westeros? This is another story filled with words that can't be spoken, misunderstandings, and so, so much yearning. Destructive passages include: He wants her to stay. He wants her to draw him close and tell him she loves him, that nothing matters but them; he loves her because she won’t and It would be better to marry a stranger, he thinks; at least then he would not know what was lost.
Basically each story is Roccolinde going "Yes, fuck her and her emotions" but in the best way.
