Rumic World Week (Day 2)
Celebrating @rumicworldweek, just answering questions. Though this question almost makes me think of drawing some stick figure art instead as it is INCREDIBLY difficult to pick my favorite chapter in ALL of Rumiko's works. I feel like I'd have to comb through all of them.
I ended up looking through my screenshots and it was a pretty close race but I think my favorite chapter is in fact "One Hundred Ghost Stories"/"Ghost Story Time"/"Hyakumonogatari", Chapter 250 from Volume 26 of Rin-ne (Kyoukai no Rinne)! This hilarious chapter is about absolutely terrifying ghost stories told by ghost themselves! Here's just one of the bone-chilling tales as a preview.
Tumblr media
Rin-ne isn't one of Takahashi's megahits from years gone, but I adore it. I find it hilarious and a lot of fun. I highly recommend it to fans of Urusei Yatsura and Ramna 1/2.

Apart from Ranma 1/2, what do you think of the other works of Rumiko Takahashi?
I was actually into Inuyasha before I discovered Ranma 1/2. I remember watching it on TV and getting so pumped when new episodes aired, I rewatched the movies Swords of An Honourable Ruler and Affections Touching Across Time over and over lmao. I think it was due to an ad in the back of an Inuyasha manga volume I’d taken out from the library that led me to Ranma 1/2, which became a Hyperfixation that’s over a decade strong now. Nowadays, Inuyasha is very nostalgic to me but I also kinda cringe at what a massive fucking dweeb I still am was and so now it’s kinda just this sorta thing I hold an equal mix of affection yet embarrassment for.
I tried to watch/read Maison Ikkoku but found myself unable to get through it because Kyoko…kinda drove me crazy. There was just so many misunderstandings that would have been avoided if they’d just talked to each other omg, and where Ranma 1/2 can get away with those antics a bit more because of the genre and the character’s ages, in Maison Ikkoku they’re all grown ups so my patience for it ran thin quickly.
I couldn’t get into Mao, tried the manga when it first started coming out but it didn’t grab me. Same for Rin-ne. I’ve found the characters in both those series to be kinda flat. Apparently the fact that Rin-ne’s Sakura is so lacking in emotion is the point of her character but….eh.
Never read/watched Urusei Yatsura. I found Lum and Ataru and their dynamic to be a bit, idk, insufferable? I’ve never given it a fair shot however so I won’t say much more, that’s just the impression I’ve gotten for the outta context shit I have seen over the years.
I enjoyed One Pound Gospel, but I’m sad that the final volume just…doesn’t exist anywhere online and also seems impossible to buy a physical copy of.
Never read/watched Mermaid Saga, either, but I’ve heard it’s her darkest work tonally/thematically so I’ve always been curious to check it out, just never got around to it.

Best Underrated Anime Group A Round 1: #A3 vs #A6
#A3: Girl who sees ghosts meets poor shinigami. Comedy ensues.
Sakura Mamiya is a schoolgirl who has the ability to see ghosts. One day she meets a shinigami (a spirit guide), Rinne Rokudo, who happens to be a classmate of hers. Rinne is part human and part shinigami, who has been left in poverty due to his father stealing money from him.
Tumblr media
#A6: Sad lesbians sing while fighting monsters
The world is beset by alien creatures known as the Noise. Nothing can touch them, and if they touch a human being, both turn into carbon dust. But, with the symphogear system-magitech battle armor powered by music and singing, humanity has a chance to fight back.
Titles, propagandas, trailers, and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#A3: RIN-NE (Kyoukai no Rinne)
youtube
Propaganda:
This is one of Rumiko Takahashi’s underrated works (mostly getting overshadowed by Inuyasha due to her releasing this series after the fact), and I don’t see a lot of people talk about it often. While it’s not my favorite of her works, it’s one that I still like because of the way she portrays the characters. Plus, it still has that classic Rumic comedy and feel to it and I really love the animation with her artstyle. Anyways, if you like supernatural comedies (with a hint of romance) then vote for Rin-ne!
Trigger Warnings: None.
Tumblr media
#A6: Symphogear (Senki Zesshou Symphogear)
[Admin: Due to a lack of a trailer on YouTube, submitter had linked the show’s opening instead. Unfortunately, YT won’t let me embed it here on Tumblr because they marked it NSFW for some reason. I had to find an actual trailer from a different site…]
Propaganda:
This is the best example of music fights I’ve ever seen. They sing WHILE fighting. It’s amazing. The fight choreography, how the music plays into it, and let’s not forget the incredible character development. The entire cast is full of characters that would be the highlight of any other show. And last but not least, it is off the walls insane fun. You think it reaches its heights at the end of season 1, but no. It keeps climbing, and you are along for the ride.
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Graphic Depictions of Cruelty/Violence/Gore, Pedophilia, Rape/Non-Con, Suicide

Do you ship anything in Rin-ne?
Sorry it took me so long to get to this ask! And absolutely!
Honestly I think Sakura and Rinne are pretty cute as far as protag couples go. I also /really/ enjoy Kain and Renge, their chapters are hilarious.
Like I said previously the ships I really get into are ones with little to no canonical support. There was a time when I briefly thought Tsubasa and Ageha would be fun, but I can't see them genuinely getting along. I would love to see a fic or ep where they are each convinced the other person is in love with them Much Ado about Nothing style, or just the two of them in general shenanigans.

I finished Rin-ne. Or Rinne. All 40 volumes of it. One of the few Rumiko Takahashi manga that wasn't a huge megahit, but I loved it. I heard some negative things regarding it from Inuyasha fans but it felt in line with the comedy of Ranma 1/2. Especially later Ranma 1/2 when the format settled. It tackles a lot of similar stuff as Urusei Yatsura (which had a fair few ghost stories) but isn't as wacky or high energy. In fact, one thing that I really enjoy is how Sakura Mamiya is basically unfazed by anything. It isn't "subtle" comedy by any means, but it was fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main male protagonist (who forms a Rumic couple in a very very low key way) is the eternally poor Rinne Rokudo who frequently cries tears of blood for having to part with things that cost about like, ten dollars. The logistics of him always being poor don't quite make sense if you think about it. But they get a lot of mileage out of this, so much like Ataru's perviness or Ranma's competitiveness, you just roll with it for the jokes.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I have a lot of screenshots and the recurring cast is big and I'll go through them all and make coherent thoughts at some point but I just wanted to get my overall out there. It is very episodic, plots will most often resolve themselves in one chapter. Which means a lot of variety in ghosts, but it does make for formula. Which is fine for me, but I can understand it doesn't have that same universal appeal as Inuyasha's ongoing saga. Overall, I liked it and I do recommend checking it out if you like Urusei Yatsura or Ranma 1/2 for the comedy.
