Historical Mermay prompt 8: Late Victorian Mermaid
Last but not least is a Late Victorian Mermaid. I based her design around 1880s fashion, especially riding habits... but with flowing mermaid hair of course.

This jacket is the result of more than 2 and a half years of work, entirely handsewn! It represents the interest in equestrian and equestrian-inspired clothing as fashionable attire in Europe during the late 17th and into the 18th centuries.
I copied it from a jacket held by the Met Costume Institute, accession number 1981.314.2. When I emailed out to them for more information about the jacket, one of the collections people was even kind enough to pull it out of storage and take some detailed shots of the exterior AND interior (thanks Marci!!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Met dates it to the 2nd quarter of the 18th century which could be true--but there are several features of this jacket that could easily be dated earlier to the late 17th century, like the button size and layout. I plan to mull over this more in a later post. At least, I would definitely place it in the earlier end of that 1725-1750 range. However, I chose to style it for the 1730s/1740s because it's Fun For Me 🙂!
Tumblr media
One of the most fun parts was gathering accessories to go with the jacket! I steamed a wool hat blank into the tricorn shape and applied the silver trim, made some detachable undersleeves based on paintings by Pietro Longhi, and threw together a matching neck ribbon as if I was some kind of ornamental poodle

"We're both avid horseback riders, and have always been. There's nothing as freeing as a good ride through the countryside. Otherwise it's mostly sports like Croquet . If you can really call it a sport, when there's no getting out of breath or even walking that much. We'd prefer running around, but that's not very proper."

Was reading La Gazette de Bon Ton from (almost!) 100 years ago the January 1924 edition) and there's this little article about sports shoes by Perugia with examples for skating, tenis, golf, and riding, and I thought "I've seen those boots before!", so I went looking for them and here we are: crocodile riding boots by André Perugia from the 1920s as reported in this French magazine and some outfits to complement.

An amazone (female equestrian) by the clothier Humann, hand-coloured lithograph in La Mode, 5 April 1843 (Rijksmuseum). The masculine tailoring of her riding costume is traditional, but I think there is a hint of something thrilling and transgressive to an 1840s audience. ("Women riding horseback were still a rare sight, and for a woman to ride unaccompanied by a man was considered scandalous": Met Museum commentary on Gustave Corbet's painting L'Amazone).
What struck me about this fashion plate was its resemblance to a popular print described by Albert Smith in The Natural History of the Gent (1847):
It represented a young lady something between a hairdresser's dummy and a barmaid, with a man's coat and hat on over her own dress. She was looking through an eye-glass at the top of a whip, and underneath was written "damme!"—why, or wherefore, or in what relation to the singular mode of toilet she has adopted, or what the word itself meant in the abstract, we never could make out. But the Gents seemed to know all about it, and bought the picture furiously.
Tumblr media
The whip, hat, and masculine coat all suggest a riding habit (although not the shorter skirt, since riding skirts were even longer to provide complete coverage). Damme that's an 1840s look!
