As a man, however, Scrooge takes his "melancholy dinner in his usual melancholy tavern" poring over his beloved banker's-book. He continues to work as, Dickens suggests, is his daily habit. π Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' was published in 1843. It is widely credited with popularising then-new, now established, Christmas traditions that we continue to observe to this day. The Victorians were enraptured by the festivities of the season. In the C17th, Christmas was prohibited by Puritans as pagan blasphemy. With their increased wealth and dispersion of the family unit, Industrial Revolution Victorians celebrated the re-emergence of celebration! Just come back from a mini break in Wales and being your typical book fiend, I had to drop in on Hay-on-Wye, fabulous book town which boasts over twenty bookshops. #100days100bookshops - A 3 floored emporium on Lion Street in Hay-on-Wye which sells new and used books. The building also houses a cinema and a cafe. I went to Hay on Wye the other day with @theironbridgebookshop (@megolass__) and @teabooksandtazmyn (and her Dad)! Itβs always good to be in this town especially when you can meet up with people you havenβt seen in ages @glenjenreads and @addymanbooks. I was so busy socialising I only took one picture and one video! It started raining whilst we were in @richardboothsbookshop so I took a quick video to show the coziness of those creaky floorboards. Today I woke up with an overwhelming longing for the time I spent @bookstagramhay this past spring with some new and old book loving friends. There is a Portuguese word that described my feelings perfectly, the word is "saudade". It is that loving feeling you get when you deeply miss someone, somewhere or an event that once brought joy and excitement to your life. You know that feeling, right?!
