Hey everyone and welcome to the third week of Mini Mahou March! You can find the main post for the event here X.

The Prompt for the week of March 2nd-8th is…

Hime Lolita Phantom Thief/Kaitou!

The sub-genre of magical girls that needs more love, the phantom thief has a long history of non-magical girl entries such as Lupin and Magic Kaitou. MGs include Shadow Lady, Saint Tail, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, and the recent Phantomirage.

Magical girl Kaitou often steal with good purpose- returning stolen goods like Saint Tail, or exorcising demons like Jeanne. With a much smaller pool of inspiration to draw from, there is very little consistency in designs for these characters, although they always have a way to make a quick escape. They often leave behind a calling card, sometimes as a form of cheeky flirting with their officer rival.

Hime Lolita, or Princess Lolita. If you know magical girls you probably know Lolita fashion- Rococo inspired, distinct silhouette, frilly and feminine. Hime lolita is extra frilly and a bit more mature with a lighter color pallet.

I’m only looking for a visual character design, something as simple as a single fullish-body picture, but you are more than welcome to go as wild as you want with trinkets, backstory, information, alt outfits, all that good stuff. Also I say girl but girl boy nb other as long as it’s a magical humanoid gender be damned, thumbs up. (Also nothing 18+ please. Your characters can be, just not your art for this)

Saint Tail uses stage magic to distract while stealing stolen goods and returning them to their proper owner while leaving calling cards for her crush who is the detective trying to catch her. Shadow Lady uses a magic eye shadow pallet to transform into different forms depending on the color, and steals, well, for fun until the plot happens, while the local cop is in love with her thief form. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne transforms with assistance from her mascot to remove demons from pieces of art which makes the art disappears, and her rival is transformed boy who wants to stop her (and her best friend is the obligatory cop) D.N.Angel is the long accept magical boy, and he transforms into his older alter ego to steal magical artifacts made by the ancestor of the obligatory cop who has his own magical alter ego and there’s a love square. 

So uh. Complicated romances & police enemies with possible overlap in those categories, transformations range from ‘new dress’ to ‘new body’, stealing is good sometimes. It’s not my fault there aren’t more Kaitou MGs we deserve this sub-genre c’mon Toei. Pierrot? Anyway there’s always non magical girl kaitou like Skye from Harvest Moon or whatever is happening in Persona 5. Masks are generally not a magical girl thing beyond proto-senshi and a couple of weirder male-target series, but it is a thief thing so your call.

Robin Hood Lolita? Scarlet Pimpernel but Frilly? How many weird thief tools is she hiding under her big skirt? Are the ribbons removable to use as getaway ropes? How fancy is that kaitou mask? Maybe some wings- with bows?

Miscellaneous items! Here we have the Ribbon Heist Baton, the Thief's Handbook (digital edition), the Pretty Calling Card, and the second set of Treasure Charms.

The Ribbon Heist Baton is the girls' primary weapon. The magic light it produces can either be rigid and used like a sword, or flexible and used like, well, a ribbon. Plugging in different Treasure Charms will allow for different attacks.

The Thief's Handbook is the series' exposition machine. All the information you could ever ask for is contained within, so long as it has to do with being the ultimate Phantom Thief.

The Pretty Calling Card is exactly what it says on the tin. It's left behind whenever the team completes a heist. The other side will have a signature and a small taunting message regarding whatever was stolen.

The second set of Treasure Charms are Luck (the clover, belongs to Cure Phantom), Freedom (the bird, belongs to Cure Trick), and Imagination (the shooting star, belongs to Cure Whisper). They allow both for upgraded individual attacks, and for the first group attack, "Triple Heist Finale."

Me? Interested in Persona 5? No wayyy...

I had this written differently before I accidentally closed this tab, but I recovered the infodump well!

So... Yeah, Ribbon! My Persona 5 SI, my Phantom Thief SI. Still want to work on a possible real name- I wanted to go with a continuation of the plot threads I thought of with my P4 si, but... nah. Two separate SIs. Even if P5 si was also from the real world, I want them to be different for. Reasons.

She would awaken in the same place as Makoto- Kaneshiro's palace. I want to slip her in somewhere, and I feel like that case would feel the most... Natural? After futaba, a lot of shit picks up, and, as seen with Haru, can be a bit awkward. (And... Yes. I'm going to try to make that arc...... Not Suck? Maybe keep Morgana self loathing but...)

As for her awakening itself... She and Makoto have similar reasons! Both of them were previously known as prim and proper students, but then awaken to a sense of Justice, and are able to go all out. After looking a bit into myself, I was like "wow Makoto really is sorta like how I would awaken maybe" because like... I want to fight against injustice and hatred in society, but I'm scared because of the law- and, like Makoto, in p5, I could snap past that. Fuck the law, I want to stop people from being HURT by society's ineptitude. Haha...

Also, a reason for the involvement in the first place- Kaneshiro's reach is... far. Its very possible that people in Kosei were affected- and, in fact, judging by Yusuke being able to gather information, they were. So... Say that one of Ribbon's friends were being used... selling her body, perhaps... Hmmm...

Yes, both Makoto and my p5 SI- can I call her just Ribbon for now?- are third year students at their school. Yes, for Ribbon's backstory, I think I want her to be a Kosei student! Maybe there because of an art scholarship- writing??- or maybe a financial education scholarship, or maybe just that whoever her guardians are, biological or not, they sent her to that school with the money they had. But... Third year. I am 19 irl- and she would be 18 during the majority of the story, turning 19 in that february because surprise I'm a February baby.

Oh, yes, and her costume! She's a magical girl. Supposed to be based off of one- I gave her ribbons and feathers and a poofy dress and high boots with thick soles and gloves... Also, her mask is simple, but... I had the base form of a butterfly, and added on some mask details and also feathers. The ribbons on the lower part of her dress are more noticeable, though. Hence, her name of Ribbon. Unless y'all can think of any better...

As for WHY magical girls? Well, she thought magical girls were cool! Yes, this reflects on me! Ribbon watched magical girl shows ever since she was a young child, and always got this idea of fighting off evil by using bright magic! And punches. And kicks. When Ribbon grew older, while she never grew out of it, she tried to keep it to the back of her mind. She always still kept an eye on one of the magical girl shows- hmm... Beauty Cure? Beaucure? (Yes. Based on Precure.) And it was pulled back to the front with her awakening, because that's always the type of stuff she liked believing in- a magical force of good fighting against forces of evil... OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL FIGHT AGAINST EVIL SOCIETY TRIES TO DO... Yeah. Mhm. Doesn't that seem familiar.

Oh, yes, I'm going to call the SI by the name of Ribbon- still unsure of if I should use Pix or if I should make up a japanese name that fits a bit closer to my real one, haha.

Her role of the team is... Well, sorta like a magical girl? She has light attacks, which does include the instant kill ones later (points @ magical girls and the series having magical attacks be the magical girl's finishing move), but she also can serve another role... Providing Buffs and giving Debuffs. I mean, magical girl power ups over the season is like a buff... And their attacks debuff the enemy... I would be tempted to also give her some healing things... Maybe later. After all, there are buff moves that are like "gain all three buffs at once!" And she'll get those! So maybe she can also be the status healer...? Dunno. Haven't really watched battle gameplay of p5- even if it's fancy, its... Boring to watch. Oops. Battle dynamics...

As for who her Persona is... I haven't thought of it. I haven't even looked into it either. I was thinking... Her first Persona would be probably an ancient magical girl? Pfft. Funny to say it like that. Maybe a fictional magical girl who was definitely outside the bounds of rules. Maybe villain, maybe hero. Her second persona would... be a goddess. Not the goddess of Magic, since. (stares at Ann.) But. A goddess of something important. Light? Hmm.

Her weapon is... A staff. Kinda a stick, but also it IS something to hurt with. Swing it around, smack someone in the side or head... Use it to adjust your position... Twirling it around... A magical girl doesn't use conventional weapons.

Oh, yeah! Here's where I closed out of the tab by accident. I went to go look at something and my phone pulled a trick on me... Anyway, moving on...

Futaba Sakura is 4'11. Ribbon is 5'. Short squad! Ribbon is irritated about getting teased for it, but is indeed 18- during the story, anyway- and just... Hasn't. Grown. Makoto is 5 inches taller. Interesting.

Ribbon's (outside of battle) role is... well, data gathering, and plan pulling. Makoto thinks of the plans, and can, indeed, push them out to the team... But for group planning sessions, Ribbon is the one listening to everyone's suggestions, and then addressing them... and giving them to the leader to mull over, as well. Make sure everyone is heard.

Oh, idea there... Ribbon also, like me, used to be a theater kid! It helped her grow more used to people around her, more used to speaking, and also technical details on things. Even if she isn't all outgoing, she still shows influences of it with analogies she makes sometimes.

(Spoilers for P5... Brief Warning. Skip to next parantheses for past that spoiler gone.)

During the Phantom Thieves' plans to decieve Akechi into believing he is totally fooling them, Ribbon could easily be very important with that acting experience. While coming up with the plan, Ribbon will definitely state theater terms, backstage, actors, scene changes... And she will definitely help the others get more into character. Staring at you, Ann... For a more believable lie... pull forth a truth similar to this situation and keep that tucked next to your heart... say your lines... and then, when that's over, let it go.

(Spoilers over! Yayyy)

So. Have you guessed who i want to f/o yet? If the answer is yes, congrats, you ain't blind to subtext!

Ribbon's costume is definitely on the lighter side! And... Yes, its definitely pink based. Solid pink ribbons... Light, soft pink dress... A mainly pink mask... I do think the feathers are another color, with those little x marker things that most of the feathers belonging to sharing a similar color, though maybe a different shade. I am... Not good with costume design, though. The accents on her mask would be similar colors to it...

Her hair is black. Darker than Makoto's, yes. She is light skinned, with barely a tan forming on her. Her mask actually covers up her obvious freckles on her face! Her arms, however, still have their freckles showing. (Not in the picture, because i forget about my arm freckles a lot...) (Also not in the picture is the frills on her dress but shhhh)

As for her Confidant? Uh... Hmm... To get to know her... Oh! She can show you her art and writing, sort of brush off her achievements with it because haha not as good as Yusuke Kitagawa's more official art... And her confidant would be helping her tap more into her confident side, whether it be for her own personal projects, or even for her just in society in general! While not as bad as Futaba, she still doesn't like approaching other people... And when that happens, and maybe culminates in her verbally cussing at someone who's been pressing her down for a while now and getting them to lay off her thanks to that newfound confidence. Not a Mementos Target, though she does bring that up but brushes it off as 'just a petty bully thing', but something she deals with herself!

.... Oh, Arcana... Uh. I think... you know how the Jester arcana was like... Another version of the Fool? Wait, the Thoth deck doesn't have an alt Priestess...? Fuck. Uh. Congrats, Akira! You get SUPER DUPER PRIESTESS BONUS. ... Please help

For her Confidant Ability.... Probably something to do with her Magical Girl influnces? The first idea I thought of was like... being able to be a temporary "safe" zone- while in the palace, she could... extend her magical girl light out and create a Barrier that prevents the shadows from noticing her. It will always stay a temporary ability, of course, since otherwise would pribably negate difficulty? But the period would become longer as her confidant goes up. The period of time would be extremly cut down during the times of actually stealing a treasure- after all, the palace ruler is EXPECTING the phantom thieves. No amount of magical girl protecting light would hide that expectation... Or. Something like that.

Also, her last skill. Instead of being like... Making the ability of protecting/anti detecting light last practically forever, its a SUPER STRONG BATTLE ABILITY. What is it? Well... uh... Still have to decide. My current idea has to do with a magical girl blast. Like, activate her light ability right as you get into a battle, and that actually does something- fires a big blast as the battle starts and inflicts damage on the enemy... Hmm. That, or she gets a special version of the all out attack that always kills? Has to be her leading the all out attack, though. What do y'all think...?

Oh, speaking of all out attacks! Hers (or her normal one if I go with the second idea in the above paragraph) would have her landing, spinning around, and doing a sharp "v" pose with her fingers, standing tall and with a grin. Think... Uh... Sailor Moon? I looked up some images and a few I found, with the peace sign arm outstretched, fit that mental image. The other hand would be on her hip, and, of course, she would be winking. Ah, girl vibes.

Yes. I am aware that could be similar to Ann. When i thought of it, i was like "hmmm" but then was like "I do that! and also there's a different between a lean and a wink with the peace sign to your chin rather than a stand/slight slouch and a wink and a peace sign held upward rather than close to the body"

Also, her little line in the background would be "light has prevailed!" In like... Bubbly letters? And it looks like light is shining from behind the letters.

Sure, Ribbon would have a romance route with Akira... but I don't consider that canon. It would make sense that he could POSSIBLY fit my type? But. Nah. Not SUPER attached. Pal at most. Speaking from outside here... In game, with the friendship forming? Maybe so. Anyway, not canon.

Oh my god i just realized Queen and Ribbon have like... Opposite sorta aesthetics. Dark Biker to Light Mage.

Anything else I can think of... Oh, a spoilerly thing.

(I don't believe I can think of anything else to say, so for those who want to be unspoiled on certain things in p5, end of post is the next paranthesis. For others...)

For her reaction to the announcement of Akira's "suicide", it would be something like... Well... A hand to her mouth, and a furrow to her brow... but she doesn't sound like she is going to cry. Instead, she goes, "Ah...", like... Realizing. Like a "hmmm" tone instead of one trying to hold back tears. And then like... Ryuji's scene is after that. And those of you who have seen the scene know what the scene is. So like, if the player was confused by Ribbon, Ryuji smacks them with a direct confirmation.

(And... That's it! Sorry for the long post, I am both unsure of if the read more code trick works on mobile anymore and also am unsure of, if it does work, which version of the trick is the correct one. Because i remember two different versions. Fuck.)

not me jumping onto the shusumi week train when there’s only a few days left 

i apparently used all my braincells to make this fic and saved none for the title

i...was very much possessed by a writing ghost when doing this. i was just reading some fics and suddenly had the idea for this and then an hour later, i had this fic. i was actually going for seasons when i first wrote this, but it very much turned more into a family piece, so here we are.

i’ve been a persona fan since about 2018, but this is my first work and, honestly, i’m really surprised it’s not shuake/akeshu since they’re usually my main ship. but the beauty of multi-shipping is that i can also love shusumi! i just think they’re really neat.

also, gonna be honest, i... think? this counts as shusumi? even though the focus is a lot more on family than anything else. i wanted to do a more internal piece about sumire and her thoughts after the events of royal, which i think i more or less got across here. there is definitely some shusumi in the end, though!

anyway, without further ado, i hope you enjoy!

word count: 1.6k summary: sumire visits kasumi a year after the accident and reflects on everything that’s changed in the last year.

“I can’t believe it’s been a year.”

It was spring. The trees were green and blooming with flowers, the air perfumed with their sweet scent. Below them, rows upon rows of stones lined the grass, gray and somber, though some holding a pop of color from leftover flowers. A lone girl stood at one, clutching her own bouquet in hand, sakura petals clinging to her red hair.

She should be with her friends right now, celebrating their graduations and having their going away parties. But she couldn’t. Not after everything that had happened. Not without telling Kasumi first.

Of course you’d be the stick in the mud who had to ruin their days, a far too familiar voice seethed in her mind. She did her best to ignore it.

She bit her lip, wondering where to begin. How to begin. So much had happened that it seemed almost like a dream.

“I don’t even know where to start, but I guess the beginning is better than nothing, right?” Sumire sighed. “Honestly, you were always better at this than I was, but I’m going to do my best.”

And so she began. From living life as Kasumi for so many months to cope, to her short time as a Phantom Thief and battling monsters they had only heard of in storybooks, to her days of being lost as Sumire and denying the truth, to finally accepting herself with the help of her friends and-

“Akira...” she trailed off and felt herself smiling just at his name. “You would have loved Akira. He’s the one who was there through it all. He met me as, well, you, but he still likes me as Sumire and-“ She felt her cheeks warm, thinking of his ridiculous, yet romantic antics since she had blurted out that confession. And the fact that he had reciprocated-

Sumire shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts and her blush. That was a story for another time, another visit.

“Anyway, he’s actually the leader of the Phantom Thieves, but he also goes to Shujin. Things didn’t start out that well for him there, but he faced it all head on and did some incredible things. And he met so many people and has so many great friends.”

She paused. “Well, I guess they’re kind of my friends, too, now.” She shrugged to herself. “I wish you could meet them, Kasumi. You would fit right in, as usual. They’re all so kind and caring and funny and- I never thought I would meet people like them. Like I know you always had amazing friends, but for so long, I didn’t think I would ever meet people like that.”

I didn’t think I deserved friends like that, the thought rose in the back of her mind.

The stone in front of her said nothing. Not that she expected it to, but it felt nice talking to it anyway. She played with the edges of her bangs, lost in thought for a moment.

“But...that’s in the past.” She gripped the flowers in her hand tighter, her voice rising as her resolve hardened. “I made a lot of mistakes before, Kasumi, but I’m not going to make them again. I’m going to live my own life and make our dreams come true as Sumire Yoshizawa!”

Again, the stone said nothing. Her words hung in the air for a moment, only to be blown away by the breeze. She fiddled with the violets in her hand.

“I thought you’d like these. I know they’re your favorite.” She tried to smile, only for it to fall moments later. She tried to swallow the lump quickly forming in her throat.

“I know I didn’t tell you this when you were here, but I miss you. I miss you so much it hurts.” Her throat felt tight, her chest hollow, like something had carved a hole into it, never to be filled again. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as her head dropped, the old familiar feelings of guilt and despair slipping through the walls she had carefully built back up the last few months.

“I feel like I’m messing this up; I was never good with speeches like this.” She sniffled, pulling off her glasses to swipe at her eyes. “I just wish you could be here somehow.”

She closed her eyes, wishing just for a moment, for a sign that her sister was listening. The spring breeze picked up again, rustling the leaves of the trees around her. She opened her eyes to see the petals spinning in a circle, almost like they were dancing in a swirl of pink. It reminded her of the pink ribbons she and her sister had first practiced with, of dancing with her friends and of gymnastics and everything that she loved.

Perhaps it had been simply a coincidence or perhaps she was making something out of nothing, but it was enough. It was a reminder to live. To live their dream, to live her life.

Sumire smiled and sighed when the petals fell back to the ground as the breeze lessened.

“I’ll be back soon, Kasumi. I’m going to a graduation party for two of my friends! Makoto and Haru, I’ll tell you more about them next time.” She placed the flowers carefully into their designated spot. “And I’ll make sure to bring new flowers next time, too! And... maybe I’ll bring Akira next time. So you can meet him.”

With nothing in her hands, she fiddled with the hem of her coat, feeling like there was something left to say still, despite knowing that she likely didn’t have much time left.

“I don’t know what’s coming next, but I know you’ll be there with me, Kasumi.” Pink flowers fell on the gray stone and for a moment she could imagine them caught in brown hair instead. “I’m sorry it took me so long to realize that, but I’m glad I know now. I really am going to do my best to make our dreams come true, Kasumi. And I’m going to keep on going and live my own life! I promise.”

With a firm nod to herself, Sumire cast one last look at her sister’s headstone before returning to the walking path. Sakura blossoms covered the top, with purple violets at the bottom. Small sprouts of white flowers had begun to bloom at its base, leaving little gray showing through. Colorful and full of life, just like Kasumi.

Sumire turned back to the pathway and made her way back down to the entrance, full of hope for the future to come.

At the entrance, a boy with black hair and glasses stood, lost in thought, his hair covered in sakura petals as well.

Whether it was from leftover abilities from the Metaverse or he was just that perceptive - she was betting on the latter - he turned toward her as she descended the last few steps down to meet him.

Akira said nothing, just opened his arms to pull her close and rest his chin on the top of her head. She sank into the embrace, feeling the heaviness in her heart lighten just a bit. His hugs were great, but they weren’t magic, even if he liked to say they were. They had a long road ahead, especially her, but she knew they could get through it together.

“Thank you for waiting,” she said, more into his coat than to him. “I’m sorry it took so long.”

“It’s fine. I knew it was important.”

Sumire tightened her arms around him, nestling further into his chest, wishing they could just stay like that forever. But she knew that wasn’t possible, so instead, she looked up.

She had seen a lot of his smiles in the time she’d known him, but she’d only seen this one once before. It was on Valentine’s Day, when his usual smirks and grins had softened into the one he wore now, a quiet little thing that held such care and love that it made her heart clench.

“I’m proud of you, you know that?”

She blinked at him. “Why?”

“I know how hard it was to handle everything, let alone talk to your sister about it. But you did it. That takes a lot of guts, Sumire.”

She felt her face redden and that soft smile edged slightly into his familiar grin.

“I-It wasn’t that big of a deal,” she stammered out. “I mean, I wouldn’t have had the guts to even come here if you weren’t with me, senpai, and even then I didn’t do anything that special!”

Akira laughed, probably at how easy it was to still make her blush around him. He was so annoying sometimes and he knew it.

But then he was serious again and searched her eyes for a moment.

“Are you going to be okay? We can always just stay at LeBlanc and watch movies if you don’t feel up to the party later.”

Sumire shook her head, feeling more okay than she had in a long time. “I want to go and be with our friends. I’ll be okay.”

He smiled and kissed her, a simple, short thing that had done a dozen times at this point, but it never failed to make her head spin and her heart sing.

“If you’re sure,” he said as they separated, only to link their hands as they walked to the station. She squeezed it and felt herself smile, more of the heaviness in her heart lifting at the thought of seeing her friends soon.

“Time to celebrate!” she cheered into the early April sky, the sun seeming to shine brighter in agreement. Hand in hand, they ran toward the station, to meet their friends and celebrate the start of something new.

Kasumi’s Design and How it Compares to Joker

In honor of Persona 5: The Royal coming out in 1 day, I decided to dedicate my first post to this topic since I’ve seen people talk about it. I also wanted to share my speculation about her design along with how and why her design is possibly connected with the protagonist/Joker by using given information about the game and the designs themselves. I’ve been working on this for a while and it might kind of messy since this is the first time I made a post of this nature (plus, I want to post it before the game’s Japanese official release).

Before I discuss about Kasumi’s design and its connection to the protagonist/Joker, it’s best to look at the reason why she was created in the first place. Weekly Famitsu magazine #1588 had an interview with producer Kazuhisa Wada, director Daiki Ito, and character designer Shigenori Soejima about P5R. When Ito talked about Kasumi, he mentioned the following:

“Kasumi Yoshizawa is a new student at Shujin Academy, who has been a high achiever in rhythmic gymnastics since middle school. Since she goes to the same school as the protagonist and his friends, there’ll naturally be many points of contact between them. Introducing a new character adds a new perspective and meaning to the story, while also letting [the team] dig deeper into the characters we already know and love. Kasumi was created after much discussion about what kind of character would allow us to realize that”.

Kasumi was always meant to represent another perspective towards the story and themes of the game. Also going by this, she was most likely never meant to be a FeMC in the way people were expecting when the second P5R teaser was dropped. With that out of the way, let’s talk about her design and how it possibly relates to the protagonist’s design (for the sake of this post, he’ll be referred to as the protagonist when talking about his civilian self and Joker as his Phantom Thief self). 

In the November 2019 issue of Game Informer magazine that was released digitally on the 1st, there was an interview with Soejima and he states the following about Kasumi’s design and how he came up with it:

“With Kasumi, [he] really wanted to create just a straight-forward heroine type of character. This might be a little bit different in the West, but in Japan, the manga [he] grew up reading, the main [female] characters always had a ponytail, and their club activity was gymnastics. [He] really wanted to just shoot for that female protagonist archetype. Maybe in the States or in the West, it’d be [comparable to] a cheerleader type of girl. With most of the characters in Persona 5, we really design them to have kind of a twist, kind of make them unique and different from what the standard character archetypes might be like, but with Kasumi, we wanted to just go straight for that heroine type of girl”.

Based on this, the reason why Kasumi wears the standard Shujin uniform is because she embodies the classic heroine. Soejima even points that while most of the main cast have a twist to their designs and how it relates to their archetypes (remember that the rest of Phantom Thieves, including Akechi, are meant to be deconstructions of their given archetype), he decided to be straightforward for Kasumi’s design and how she’s supposed to reflect her given archetype. The only other character to not have a twist on their design is the protagonist. Actually, that’s not completely true. The protagonist and Kasumi actually have a twist in their design (this isn’t counting the protagonist’s glasses or Kasumi’s ribbon as they don’t take away from the uniform). Compare the concept art for the protagonist to the concept art for the Shujin uniforms. 

It’s hard to tell here, but the protagonist doesn’t wear the standardized shoes. Instead, he switches them out for some dress boots. Now let’s compare the protagonist and Kasumi.

Like the protagonist, Kasumi switches out the standardized shoes (in her case, she trades them out for some red loafers). This may not seem like much, but it’s rather strange that the one thing they change to their uniforms is the shoes. If anything, it seems like an intentional design choice to make them more similar. 

Now that I talked about her winter uniform, I can move onto her Phantom Thief attire and its relation to Joker’s outfit. 

Back to Weekly Famitsu magazine #1588, Soejima says the following when discussing about her Phantom Thief design: 

“Kasumi doesn’t form a pair with the protagonist, but since [Soejima] was drawing her as an icon of P5R, [he] designed her phantom thief appearance to feel like it goes alongside the protagonist’s. The idea of ‘phantom thieves’ in itself has manga-like elements, right? Like with the protagonist, [he] wanted this new character to have that ‘coolness’ that everyone normally expects from a phantom thief. A female phantom thief that has a different stance from the protagonist… What kind of character is she? [He hopes] you’ll be excited to find out.”

When he mentions that she doesn’t form a pair with Joker, I’m assuming that he means that the two aren’t completely direct counterparts or mirror images like how P3MC and FeMC are. While their outfits do have differences (that are better seen in the new prologue), their outfits parallel each other and have the same color scheme (more on that later). Soejima confirms that Kasumi’s Phantom Thief design resembles Joker’s design is because he intentionally made her design to feel like it goes along with him. 

Despite the almost uncanny resemblance of their Phantom Thief outfits, I get the impression that the overall intention of the designs are different. I believe the reason why their designs are so similar but different is because they’re supposed to reflect two different versions of the hero and heroine archetype that reflects their ideologies. At this point, I might sound like I’m crazy, but let’s quickly go over their designs and compare them. 

Joker wears a black and white domino mask. Kasumi also wears a mask, but her mask is black and white/silver. Joker only has small gold buttons on his waistcoat, the rest of the buttons are silver as seen on his in-game model (they are sometimes depicted as black or gold depending on the artist). Kasumi, on the other hand, has large gold buttons on her coat and smaller gold buttons on her thigh-length hose. Kasumi also has a silver chain belt with roses on it (basically, Joker and Kasumi have their placement of the silver and gold reversed). He has a white handkerchief in the pocket of his jacket while she wears a black choker. Joker wears brown winklepickers, but Kasumi wears black stiletto-heels, which resemble ballet shoes. Lastly, he wields a knife as his melee weapon while she wields an estoc. Joker’s attire can be described as classy but able to blend in the shadows. His design the embodiment of the gentleman thief, a classical type of anti-hero. Meanwhile, Kasumi’s design is very graceful and more traditionally heroic compared to Joker’s gentleman thief-esque design. Soejima points out how the Phantom Thief concept has manga-like elements (which the characters also bring up in PQ2). Combine this with Kasumi’s transformation sequence in PV #02, Kasumi’s Phantom Thief design seems to have taken some inspiration from magical girls. Despite the numbers of differences, their designs still complement each other because of the shared color schemes, red gloves, and number of coattails. Basically, their designs are different yet still go along with each other (kind of like yin and yang in a sense).

In both their Shujin uniforms and their Phantom Thief attire, they share a black-red color scheme (which are also the main colors of Persona 5). An interesting thing to note is that the two have more of a certain color in their designs.The protagonist has a bigger emphasis on black as his hair, rim of the glasses, and dress boots are black. His eyes are technically gray, but they’re a much darker shade compared to P3MC or Yu Narukami. Meanwhile, Kasumi has a bigger emphasis on red as her hair, eyes, and shoes are red. It’s possible that the reason for the protagonist greater emphasis on black relates to how he’s the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, who steal the distorted desires of individuals by morally grey means and sneak around Palaces within the shadows. In this school life, the protagonist keeps his head down and doesn’t really stand out from the crowd. Meanwhile, Kasumi rejects the Phantom Thieves because she believes that their methods don’t actually help anyone and that people should solve their own problems (this seems to stem from her own issues based on translations of her character introduction, PV #02, and PV #03). Despite this, she later joins them for her own reasons. Her appearance also helps her stand out.

This last part before moving on is speculation, but I’m going with the idea that there’s an in-universe for why her Phantom Thief outfit is similar to Joker’s. I’m kind of going on a tangent here, but it will connect back to Kasumi’s design. It’s known that Kasumi dislikes the Phantom Thieves, yet she’s seen helping Joker fight off a group of shadows while at the Casino Palace (at this point, she doesn’t consider herself a Phantom Thief but has awakened to her Persona) in the updated prologue and telling him that she isn’t going to stop him when she brings up that he still has something to do as a Phantom Thief. In PV #01, there’s a new animated cutscene involving the protagonist, Morgana, and Kasumi (note that both the protagonist and Kasumi are wearing their regular winter uniforms, not the ones for the third semester). 

PV #02 elaborates on this by showing new shots of it, and reveals that the new Palace is feature in that cutscene. 

In Kasumi’s introduction trailer, we see Joker and Morgana watching Kasumi awakening to her Persona in what appears to be in the new Palace. There’s also a gameplay section where the trio are seen fighting together, just them. 

Based on all of this info, I can conclude that the protagonist, Morgana, and Kasumi first enter the palace some time in between Spaceport of Greed arc and Casino of Envy arc (possibly even during one of those arcs or even before). Not only that, but the animated cutscene leads to the trio exploring the new palace for the first time and Kasumi awakening her Persona. After this point, Joker and Kasumi would meet again at Sae’s Palace when she has already awakened to her Persona. Based on all of the evidence presented, her in-universe reason for her Phantom Thief design looking like Joker is because her view of rebellion is him. Again, this is only speculation. It can only be confirmed when the game released on the 31st of this month in Japan. 

Lastly, I want to talk about the designs of their Personas briefly and how they compare/contrast. 

Arsene of the Fool Arcana and Cendrillon of the Faith Arcana are the only P5 Personas to not have golden eyes in any shape or form (as of now anyway). Instead, Arsene has red eyes while Cendrillon has blue. Their legs have a similar shape and they’re both seen to use physical skills by using their heels. Arsene’s horns and Cendrillon’s bow both point forwards. Arsene has a mask-like face that has been described to be glass-like while Cendrillon’s legs and chest are composed from glass. Both of them feature feathers in their design (Arsene has wings while Cendrillon’s cape and bow have a feathery appearance). Both of them have hearts patterns somewhere on their designs (Arsene has heart patterns on his shoulders while golden decor holding up Cendrillon’s cape resembles hearts). Another thing they have in common is that Arsene and Cendrillon both have French origins (Arsene Lupin is the creation of French novelist Maurice Leblanc while Cendrillon is based off of French author Charles Perrault’s interpretation of the Cinderella story). As for how they’re different, the first thing to mention is the color schemes. While both have black, white, and gold, Arsene has red, but Cendrillon has blue instead. Arsene has black wings while Cendrillon has a white feathery cape. Arsene has black claws resembling talons of a bird while Cendrillon has blue nails. Arsene has an overall demonic appearance while Cendrillon has a somewhat angelic appearance. Lastly, Arsene uses Curse skills while Cendrillon uses Bless skills. 

In conclusion, Kasumi’s design is intentionally meant to resemble the protagonist’s design to go alongside him and highlight their difference stances. They represent the hero and heroine archetypes on different scales, with the protagonist representing the anti-hero and Kasumi representing the traditional heroine. The in-universe reason for their similar Phantom Thief designs possibly has to do with how Kasumi’s view of rebellion is Joker mixed with gymnastics. Or maybe I’m looking too much into Kasumi’s design and how that design compares to the protagonist/Joker.

do take note that these are not their appearances clothing-wise! those are based on actual clothing items from the game (these i suppose could be casual clothes??? pjs??? idk) with, like, a few adjustments. these were mostly made to get physical appearances figured out.

and of course phoenix’s wings and halo aren’t there most of the time bUT YKNO AHAHAH

Phoenix

Character Notes -baby girl who can and will kick ur ass -actual age is unknown but she physically looks around 18 or so. maybe slightly older than that. -physically mute. aquila gave her a magical pad of paper (never runs out) and a pen with everlasting ink (they’d have stuff like that up in the observatory im sure) and she mostly uses that to communicate. she does know sign language but can never be certain if someone else will so she doesn’t use it often. -always been super curious about the protectorate! but has rly only been limited to angel falls before falling so doesn’t know much about anywhere beyond that. -sees aquila as a fatherly figure, but doesn’t quite know how to admit it to him.

Design Notes -somewhere between 5′3′’ and 5′4′’ -thats four braids there not two (two in front two in back) -wears the full celestial clothing set. all the time. don’t take this away from her ITS HER LAST CONNECTION TO HOME -uses swords and shields only

Lepus

Character Notes -stinky bastard man (ok not rly) -BORN TO DIE ORIENTATION IS A FUCK -if he’s attracted to them he’ll flirt with them -tried his advances on phoenix once. it kinda worked but then she saved him during battle and he’s been head-over-heels for the woman since then. -doesn’t actually join the party at first, just kinda shows up a bunch for a while. actually joins during the gleeba saga. he and phoenix have a couple heart-to-hearts before that, tho. -bottom -lost his leg in an incident he doesn’t like to talk about. he’s fine now with the prosthetic and all but phantom pains and chafing and the stupid thing coming loose are all things so that sucks

Design Notes -5′5′’, almost 5′6′’. so close, yet so far. -wears dark robe/macabre mantle variant. purple bit is a light blue and main robe is dark beige-ish color -white tights. pant leg that’d cover prosthetic is cut short, tho -has gloomy gloves/murky mittens, but reddish part is dark blue -the sandals shown in the pic are right. yes he only wears it on the one foot. -uses solely knives. no shield. only stab.

Volans

Character Notes -baby boy. baby -srsly he’s like 16 who let this child hold a polearm -v bottom of the hierarchy in stornway’s guard. actually p tough but has serious anxiety and is super afraid of letting everyone down. -admires princess simona’s unending determination!! he wants to be like her. -joins phoenix to go fight the wight knight. ends up going with her on her journey as a whole in order to train and improve. -make him cry and phoenix will actually stab you. she won’t hesitate bitch

Design Notes -5′4′’ -black variant of the ‘mail’ armor set (with accents in various shades of purple) -similarly colored variants of the kneecaps, sabatons, and gauntlets. -no headgear! he prefers having his head exposed for some personal reasons -spears and shields over here

Crux

Character Notes -nonbinary -crux says fuck gender -yes they chose their name and yes it is meant to be similar to what u might be thinking rn -joins when phoenix and vorans go to zere. why? who tf knows -kinda creepy sometimes???? but nice nonetheless. -talks to themselves a lot for some reason. tends to deny it when confronted bout the whole thing, tho.

Rolechange AU! Persona 5 ;)

So im working on AU for Persona 5 where basically every phantom thieves roles gets changed. Including Akechi. (Btw there will be a lot of spoilers for the whole game) An example is ; Makoto is in Morgana's place. She's a raccon who has some pretty decent physical attacks and some fire attacks, representing her firm aggressive attitude. Thief Name : Mako. Though she's still a wip.

The Protagonist/ Akira's role : Haru

Yes! Haru is the protagonist because, umm hello? She's an underrated character! I don't really like her cause I don't know much about her other than she needs help ;--;. And it suits her to take Makoto in! Makoto has a soft spot for Haru tbh.

Morgana's Role: Makoto

I feel like Makoto will be more aggressive than Morgana when it comes to focusing on a task and will be more calmer at the same time. Due to her being a raccoon, no one fucks with her. And it shouldn't be a thought either. You just don't fuck around with her. Period.

Ryuji's Role : Morgana

Tbh I didn't know what other role to give Morgana ^^" . Morgana it obviously more nicer to ladies then men, always trying to be a gentlemen. Morgana knows at the time no one appreciates his kindness, he still acts kind. Im pretty sure he's more determined than Ryuji, not wanting to give up. He doesn't want to pressure his mother so he works as hard as he can to make life easier. But at one point, he just gives up and begins to steal little things. Never getting caught. He at least still has manners. Not when he gawks over ladies tho. When seeing Haru allow Akechi into Kamoshida's car, he scolds her but apologises after since she hadn't known about Kamoshida.

Ann's Role: Akechi

He's a god damn prince how could I not make him a model?! And yes, he gets sexually harassed by Kamoshida, swallowing his pride for Shiho. He knows how Syujin Academy works, no one would listen to his cries for help. He often fakes his smiles during school hours, always wanting to leave the hellish place. When he models, his smile is more real. He appreciates his fans despite how creepy they are...

Yusukes Role: Ryuji

A street artist! Spray cans. He's often blunt about his opinon, if he hates something. He says it. He knows Madarame is abusing him, yet he ignores it. He doesn't want to lose his only family. So time to time he will change his art style. He swears more when he's angry.

Makoto's Role: Akira

Akira is very quiet and calm, never loses his cool. When the principal brings up his sister Sae, he looks like he could kill the bald man multiple times with not mercy. His eyes tend to scare people off, but if he were to talk to friends, he'd tease them about their grades and joke around. And maybe flirt with Akechi.

Funfact: When stalking the group, he looks more calmer and less suspicious. But is reading one of Goro's magazines 👌

He gets very cocky whenever he has the upperhand of the situation like when blackmailing the phantom thieves, he is smug x 10000 when playing the audio recording of Morgana and Ryuji yell at each other.

Futaba's Role : Ann

Now, I've been working on Ann for a month. So she is more closer to being finished. Ann was a very needy child who always wanted attention. Might've been a brat when she didn't get what she wanted. But deeply loves her mom. When accused of her mothers death, shes way more emotional than Futaba. Nightmares, Hallucinations, and fears developed. She becane more squeamish and nervous, always feeling unwanted due to her appearance and about what happened to her mom. People looked at her with either disgust or bad intent. She shut the world out, locking herself in her room. Enjoying childish magical girl shows and playing games. She feels like she was creating a dangerous potion when gathering info to expose people online for their crimes. Going by the name 'Cresent Star.' Her palace is a witches hut that is a tower, they have to save Ann before she is burned on the stake, Ann's mom is a priestess, using mostly bless attacks and gun skills. Her persona is Grimore, which is a UFO thats neon pink with Sliver outlining. Her outfit is a black tight suit with black boots, and a pink hologram mask along with a witch hat that has a pink ribbon on it.

Haru's Role: Yusuke

Not alot of ideas yet, bweeeh

Goro Akechi's Role: Futaba

Yes! Futaba is indeed the detective princess of this story! She has black hair, since she never really has time to dye it. Futaba craves being accepted and having affection, yet constantly denies it. She is always tired, basically living off coffee and energy drinks. Deep inside she's still a child. She always acts like a happy idol. Always sounding like nothing can go wrong. She hates Shido to the bitter core of her heart. Wanting to see him die, yet she is a doll to him.

And that's all I have so far! I'd love advice or some ideas for this AU!

Ren: The council still has to make a vote. If the majority agrees with the Winx’s proposal, Red Fountain will be able to permit female students next year. If not and give in to Erendor’s objection, Red Fountain will remain an all boys school.

Ryuji: He objects so he can keep his son and Bloom apart. He wants Sky and that Diaspro chick to be together.

Yuto: I’ve heard of her. She’s... Difficult to talk with.

Keigo: Speaking of which, look who just came in.

1: Origins! How did you come up with the concept for your OC? Ary was a bit of a mishmash to be honest. Mostly I really wanted to wear a Phantom of the Opera mask to blackwatch, so I came up with a whole spiraling backstory to justify it. i also wanted to get to know other people’s characters, so I decided to play someone who was outgoing and humorous, but a bit rough around the edges. 

2: Were they originally well received by the fandom? Or if they’re fandomless, did the RP community take to them right away or was it hard to get attention? no fandom, but most of my LARP friends noticed Ary right away. (they’re pretty chatty so it’s hard to miss them) their personality developed from session to session based on what i thought worked and by the end of their arc they were pretty well-liked. 

3: Has your OC gone through different incarnations during their stay on Tumblr? Were they reimagined or have they stayed the same all this time? originally ary was supposed to be a lot less vocal cause I was pretty shy, but i soon found out that they weren’t having that at all. 

9: What is your OC like when at work? Are they diligent? Slacker? Do they get along with their co-workers? Ary works hard, but also jokes around a lot. if they don’t like the job they won’t devote a lot of effort to it, but no matter what they always try to befriend their co-workers. 

10: How do they deal with strangers? Ary is pretty distrustful of strangers at first, but it doesn’t take much to get them to befriend them. although truly earning their trust takes time, they tend to see the best in people and will readily give anyone a chance. 

11: Is there a place they go to in order to escape the world, the stresses of life? What’s their favourite place? Ary’s hometown is a dream-city called Skerry, so they like to visit it in their sleep. the alleys of Skerry are filled with all sorts of different characters and people, and they consider it to be home. 

12: What scent calms them? Reminds them of home or something soothing? their favorite smell is a type of flower that doesn’t actually exist in the waking world, but was a popular perfume for sex workers in Skerry and worn by their caretaker (mother or sister? its unclear). 

13: Do they have any favourite foods? Would they eat it all the time if they had the chance? What do they hate to eat? cinnamon cookies! anything cinnamon and sweet, really. they’ve actually tried to survive off cookies alone. it didn’t work. they hate anything minty. 

14: Pet peeves. Tell us what would really tick them off. Do they have a Berserk Button? pretty basic, mostly just people hurting their friends. although ary is pretty easy-going, once you get them truly angry then you’re kinda fucked. 

15: Does your OC have any awful fears? Do they get paralyzed with fear or can they work through their fears? Ary is terrified of water, to the point where baths have been a problem. they’ve been able to work through this a little bit thanks to a lovely magical hot tub, but still refuse to submerge. 

16: What are concepts they value? Virtues? What do they look down upon? Ary values honesty and hard work! if you lie to them they’ll pretty much never forgive you. ironically enough, they’re also a bit of a thief and scoff at people’s concepts of traditional virtue. (”how can you be honest if you’re a thief?” people may ask. “m8 i dont lie about stealing shit, its just that nobody really asks.” “have you stolen stuff from me????” “haha totally”) 

17: Do they have any guilty pleasures? They embarrassed about them? Do they flaunt them? pretty girls. they’re completely unashamed about it and full of innuendo. 

18: Do they have a guilty conscience? Why? Did they ever do something they totally regretted? massive survivor’s guilt for pretty much everything. their instinctive reaction to a tragedy is to blame themselves. they have a lot of regrets, but are doing their best to move past them. 

20: What are Tropes you associate with your muse? they’re somewhat of a Jerk With a Heart of Gold and also someone who Really Gets Around. also Have I Mentioned I Am Gay. 

21: Name an embarrassing situation that your muse has been in. they tried to nab a vampire’s hair ribbon and almost started an all-out fight. it was bad. 

22: If given a million dollars, what would your OC do? hire a hot female cook to bake them cookies all day every day. and then hoard some it and spend the rest on lavish gifts for their friends. 

wow, i haven’t talked a lot about ary in a while! i miss them and this was super fun. now, onto the twins! 

1: Origins! How did you come up with the concept for your OC? I basically took some basic character archetypes and designed characters around them. Siobhan’s original moniker was “woodland witch”, while Saoirse’s was “monster hunter”. the focus on both of them was initially how they would interact with campers, and then they sort of ran away from me. 

6: What is your OC’s family situation? Do they get along? Do they fight? Or are they alone? both parents are dead (passed peacefully a while ago) and they’re not at all on speaking terms. Siobhan considers her animal and creature friends to be family, while Saoirse is closest to her “sisters” at the all-female monster hunting group she used to be a part of. 

7: What does your OC look for in a friend? Do they value friendship a lot? Siobhan values kindness and caring, and has many many friends. Saoirse looks for honesty and loyalty, and only has a few people she’s super close to. 

8: What does your OC look for in a significant other? Are they looking at all? Siobhan isn’t looking, and probably won’t ever be (aro ace). Saoirse isn’t currently looking either, but her past string of lovers tended to be hardened fighters like herself (mostly female but a few men thrown in there as well). 

9: What is your OC like when at work? Are they diligent? Slacker? Do they get along with their co-workers? already answered for Siobhan, but Saoirse is very diligent. she gets along with her co-workers as much as is needed to survive, but doesn’t really make friends on the job. (considering that the job is killing things, this makes sense)

10: How do they deal with strangers? Siobhan loves strangers! Saoirse does not. this is the biggest fundamental difference between them - their reaction to the unknown. 

11: Is there a place they go to in order to escape the world, the stresses of life? What’s their favourite place? Siobhan loves the woods, in particular a little brook that runs by her home. if she’s feeling overwhelmed, she’ll go and swim in one of the deep pools there. Saoirse doesn’t currently have a physical place to go to, but she likes to sit in a quiet place and think about her childhood home. her safe place is more mental. 

12: What scent calms them? Reminds them of home or something soothing? Siobhan likes the smell of wet leaves on the ground. Saoirse loves the smell of woodsmoke on a cold day. 

13: Do they have any favourite foods? Would they eat it all the time if they had the chance? What do they hate to eat? Siobhan really likes rare meat and candied flowers. its a fae thing. she won’t eat anything that’s been boiled, as she says boiling “kills the flavor”. in contrast, Saoirse’s favorite food is stew/soup of any kind. she doesnt like anything overly sweet. 

14: Pet peeves. Tell us what would really tick them off. Do they have a Berserk Button? already answered Siobhan’s. Saoirse is actually like her sister in this regard, she doesn’t get angry very often. mostly she gets mad as a defense mechanism when something surprises her. given her cynical nature, this rarely happens. 

15: Does your OC have any awful fears? Do they get paralyzed with fear or can they work through their fears? Siobhan is terrified of people finding out her true nature and hating her for it. she has nightmares of mobs hunting her down and setting her home on fire. she generally doesn’t like to acknowledge this fear and therefore doesn’t attempt to work through it. Saoirse is scared of monsters. her coping mechanism involves killing them, which isn’t healthy, but it does work. 

16: What are concepts they value? Virtues? What do they look down upon? Siobhan values kindness above all else. she’s very Neutral Good. Saoirse values physical strength and proficiency. she’s pretty Lawful Good. (it took me a while to figure out her alignment, but i eventually got it down. Saoirse likes to set rules for herself and follow them, and sees the world in very black and white terms. in her eyes, there is Good and there is Evil and there is nothing in between.)

17: Do they have any guilty pleasures? They embarrassed about them? Do they flaunt them? already answered for Siobhan - honey! Saoirse’s is music. she’s pretty shy about it, but she loves listening to people singing and play instruments. she learned how to play piano when she was young, but won’t perform in front of people. 

18: Do they have a guilty conscience? Why? Did they ever do something they totally regretted? Siobhan blames herself for her sister’s injury. Saoirse regrets blaming her sister for her injury. 

19: Have they ever been injured? Sick? How do they deal with it? Siobhan doesn’t really get sick. her response to injury is usually confusion. she takes care of it and functions the best she can. Saoirse would get terrible migraines as a child and doesn’t deal well with injury. she tries to push through the pain, which usually leaves her in worse condition. 

20: What are Tropes you associate with your muse? oh man i’m not super familiar with tropes let’s leave that for another day. 

21: Name an embarrassing situation that your muse has been in. Siobhan once got stuck in a tree trying to rescue a squirrel. she didn’t know that squirrels can climb trees. Saoirse once got startled by a giant cockroach and proceeded to lightning bolt it. that section of the house had to be rebuilt. 

25: What are your plans for your muse in the future? if all goes well, Siobhan is going to work with the Woodland Realm and teach them about earthworms and decomposition! fingers crossed. Saoirse is going to teach skills to various houses and probably hang around with the Blackwatch. if all does not go well, they’ll probably do the same thing but in a diminished capacity.

So after i did that infodump post on my p5 self insert, i actually went and decided on her name! Yes, went for a japanese name. Even if I did prefer Pix here, a name that fits in would be important.

Noriko Takamura. The name I looked up for the first name- Noriko- is actually similar to my first name. I wanted first names that meant something like... royalty? Because my name apparently means "crowned one". And Noriko means "child of ceremony" or something similar... and that fits, and I like it! As for the last name... I looked up a japanese name generator and kept rolling until i found a name that felt nice to me. Family names and that junk.

I like the summer uniform drawing more, but i just wanted like... References. The freckles aren't obvious via camera, but they're there!

Yes, she just doesn't go with the provided jacket for the colder school uniform. If she's cold, she has her own jacket she can put on. Think like... Chie. She doesn't keep the jacket wrapped on her, but its like... Stuffed in her bag.

so Noriko’s family is based on my own family, except i just tweaked it a bit to make things Slightly Worse (in regards to the family dynamic) because its Persona 5 and some things are just shittier.

so, imma talk about that. below cut.

Noriko’s mom and dad- i still need to name them but w/e- are generally supportive. Noriko appreciates that. They give her some odd looks for being a hardcore gamer, but they still support their daughter and her happiness, and even have allowed her to move a TV into her room and make her play in her room whenever the family has to use the main floor TV! cool beans!

But whenever the topic of The Gays™ comes up, or anything outside of the cishet range in general, they get... nervous. avoiding it. regard it as something to just push away and make go away. And their view on this subject doesn’t seem to be budging.

Noriko’s older sister, Kikyo, came out as a lesbian in high school. started dating a girl. then came out as nonbinary. Noriko calls Kikyo her sister, still, but will refer to them with they/them pronouns otherwise. The lesbian thing was awkward for the parents, and the nonbinary thing was harshly lectured about.

Kikyo moved away very quickly. 

They did not contact the family again- only Noriko and Noriko’s younger sister, Takara, gets contacted, and the both of them are pretty quiet about it. 

The subject of being anything but cishet is awkward, and often avoided, or brought up and then immediately dropped like a hot potato. 

Soon after her sister told Noriko about being a lesbian, Noriko’s reaction was something like... ‘cool. can we play pokemon now’. Noriko was an internet child, okay?

 A bit after Kikyo started dating their girlfriend, Noriko started looking into her own feelings and was like ‘oh, asexual!! that’s ME!’

she told her mom. her mom laughed in her face. Noriko never has brought it up again- fearful of any break of trust with her dad, who she avoids such subjects with, even if she trusts him in matters she doesn’t trust her mom with. Noriko trusts her parents on Some Things, but definitely not on others- like her friend life, or being asexual (or toying with not being Full Girl). 

Noriko and Takara’s relationship is... strained? like, they trust each other with the things they wouldn’t dare tell their parents, but they don’t like talking to each other much, and their interests are... very different. Noriko kicks Takara’s ass in games and Takara Doesn’t Like That Much, so Noriko can’t bond with Takara the way she usually bonds with others...

Noriko’s family is Aware that Noriko stopped really reaching out for real life friends after the fifth friend moved away, only keeping Ikue as a friend. Ikue’s been her friend since a young age, and they’ve been each other’s friend ever since. It took Noriko a few years to drop the honorifics for Ikue, and the same goes for Ikue. Just friends!

(I based noriko’s friend Ikue on an old childhood friend who moved away just a few months before i was graduating third grade to fourth grade. Think... instead of that friend moving away, the other two friends I had moved away instead!)

So while Noriko is fully aware her family is pretty cool compared to the others in the thieves, she just... doesn’t find them cool in her eyes. She’d prefer to be with her found family instead- people who understand all of her, not just parts of her. The phantom thieves and Ikue... her friends on the internet... they are the ones she hangs with, they’re the ones Noriko goes to with her problems.
