I just got finished reading Aftermarket Afterlife and it gutted me (in the best way possible). I wasn't sure how Mary's POV was going to work, and I am so sorry for doubting you because it was amazing.

I don't know if/when you'll be open to answering questions about the book, and I'm sorry if I'm overstepping, but I was wondering: were there other deaths you considered but it wasn't their time? Or scenes that you had at first but pulled?

You aren't overstepping, but asking things on Tumblr is Fraught, because I try to be so, so careful about spoilers. So:

Going into a book centered on a very small, very focused war, I knew people would have to die. There was no way people weren't going to die. So I looked at every single member of the family, trying to see who had reached the end of their narrative necessity--who did I already have plans for, who did I think I might eventually have plans for, etc. And when I found the people who had no further story, I killed them.

It was a brutal way to go about things, but it had to happen, and I like where it leaves us.

As for "scenes I had but pulled," not so much in the book...but. I had one beta reader who hated that Mary missed some of the reunion-y bits, because she had other places to be, and wanted to see them. So I wrote an alternate novella to replace "Dreaming of You In Freefall." However, changing novellas meant un-killing someone, because all the grief and processing for that character was in the original novella.

Eventually, the decision was made, correctly, to revert.

Do you think elucien will defeat koschei next book? I feel like koschei is a part of the overarching bigger plot, and it would be too soon for it to happen next book. Sarah said that each couple would have their own little story while there's a bigger plot that connects the books. UNLESS the human queens and the situation with the human lands and the wall is the overarching plot? Hmm

I do actually.

Once upon a time we thought we were only getting two more ACOTAR books after SF (with one possibly being set in the past which means she was never sure on Koschei extending beyond two spin-offs) and a novella but since then, SJM has signed up on for additional books (though we don't know exactly which series those all belong to) and has said that she knows she'll never be done writing the acotar series.

If she plans on continuing ACOTAR for an undetermined time frame, it's a fair assumption to say that the Koschei plot is not going to drag out over the course of many more books, she'll have to wrap up his story then introduce a new plot to the characters.

She also had a WIP named Twilight of the Gods and is suddenly giving attention to the would have been "Dusk" court.

I think Koschei is the big bad to close out the Archeron sisters saga, which will leave Prythian, the fae on the other continents and the humans in the human lands in peace once again.

I think a novella will then bridge the gap to a new round of books, closing out the HEA for Feyre, Nesta, and Elain then focusing on non Archeron sister main characters, set partially in the ACOTAR world but also connecting to her multiverse (though the sisters would still make appearances as side characters).

HOFAS clearly seemed to set up for a future reunion of Nesta and Ember, the possibility of threats from other worlds, and SF included the possibility for the characters to travel through time and space.

But right now in the ACOTAR world, (and even at the end of HOFAS), there are no actual threats involving time travel. The possibility of them yes, but nothing concrete.

And I think the Valkyrie will be at the center of the new round of books but to me their storyline and anything time travel related doesn't seem to be priorty over that which is going on in Spring, the continent, with Beron and with Koschei (plots that seem strongly connected to Elain and Lucien).

All the language SJM uses for the Valkyrie and time travel seems to hint at something that will take place in their world later. After they secure the peace elsewhere, after the treaty is signed, after Koschei and Beron are dealt with, after the climate elsewhere is settled.

Considering the Valkrie were just reborn in SF, I think it makes sense for there to be a bit more time from their inception (which right now only includes three females who haven't had battle training yet) until they are a fully formed elite female fighting unit heading into battle and possibly traveling to other worlds. Having an entire unit of female warriors who have never fought in battle together, who have never trained together (again, right now it's only three females, not a whole group and two who only just left where they were living for the first time ever) become a major part of the series the same year the idea of the Valkyrie was reborn seems less likely to me.

And I think it makes sense for SJM to close out the three sisters arcs, the ones who basically launched the series as it now is for her since she's on record saying how their return in book 2 changed the course of the books for her, and then focus on what comes after, the world as it expanded while writing SF.

I finished my manuscript draft, and now I'm lost.

@dyrewrites had helpful points, including doing a poll, so that's what I'm doing.

All the options are some version of fake relationship because of who I am as a person.

House of Flame and Shadow 🌙 Review

Let me just say that I absolutely loved 90% of the book, it was perfect in many, ways. But that ending… it kinda spoiled the book for me…

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and a half

Let’s start with that! I felt the built-up to the battle with the Asteri was bigger and more interesting than the battle itself. It ended way too quickly and too easily. The Asteri really didn’t put up that much of a fight. Two books leading up to this moment and then it just that? I was disappointed, not gonna lie. The battle needed more momentum and more magnitude, it felt really small. 

I also saw some comments about the crossover, of people disappointed that it was just Nesta and Azriel, and didn’t get a chance to see Feyre or Nyx, or even Mor. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to see them too, but the crossover was not a big reunion of all the characters. The purpose of the crossover was to find the connection with the trove and the starlight bloodline, the connection between the blades, and for that, only Nesta and Azriel are necessary. Maybe a novella would be different, but I think the crossover was done right, even in the bonus chapters (also, Sarah can you please stop with the different versions of the books and different chapters spread god knows where?! Thank you!)

As you may know, Bryce lost some of my affection during this book, her insensitive remarks to Hunt pissed me off so much. And even to Lidia, saying her kids are baggage, honestly, I don’t know how Lidia didn’t freak out on her. I get that she’s young and has the world on her shoulders, but it doesn’t feel like enough of an excuse. And Hunt was never a personal favorite of mine (I still liked him enough, though) so if this is really the last book where they are the main couple I don’t really mind it! Lidia and Ruhn carried the book anyway 😍 and I feel like SJM explored Bryce and Hunt’s relationship enough. The next one would definitely benefit from a different and fresh perspective. 

Also, I was never a fan of the whole Danika thing. I understand her importance to Bryce and to the story but how it was built made me really dislike her for some reason. I know she was brave and cared for Bryce deeply, and was willing to sacrifice (and did in the end) a lot for the cause. But she never sat right with me. And that whole bonus chapter where she just gets Bryce drunk (I know, I know, Bryce didn’t need any help, I know) it just made things worse. It was obvious she had a plan since the beginning and Bryce just went along because she cared deeply for her friend. And while I don’t doubt Danika’s affection and friendship with Bryce, at some point you have to wonder how much was real when Danika was hiding so much vital information, and not only about her cause, but about herself.

The rest of the book I liked just fine. Celestina should have died, and this is the hill I’m dying on. She deserved it. And she had no redemption at all to earn the mercy Bryce got her. The autumn king's death was spectacular! And Morven’s too! How I laughed, I was never that happy with characters dying. AND SABINE! This book had many, many happy moments for me 😂 I only felt bad about the Prime, he deserved a more dignified death than what he got and the way Sabine killed him… she deserved all that she got. And Sigrid? That little bitch! I know she’s not in control, she’s a freshly made reaper, probably still adjusting, running on instinct, but I mean… siding with Sabine? SABINE?! Ithan will be one hell of a prime, I just know it!

There were a few surprises that got me screaming. I think Lidia’s kids connect her with the spring court because of the fertility rite (but we’ll get to that!) and Hypaxja as the head of Flame and Shadow! I think the true wonders of Hypaxia’s power are still to be shown and I’m all for it! 

Now, I’m assuming the next book will be House of Many Waters, if SJM is following the house names. Here I think Tharion could definitely play a bigger role! HOFAS spent a lot of time setting him up, but also Hypaxia (who became the head of flame and shadow! and is also Lidia’s sister!) and Ithan! If Tharion and Hypaxia's friendship were to grow into something deeper, and Tharion somehow became the head of Many Waters, imagine the power couple!

But I have so many questions about this book and its connection to the others and other series! So many that I think maybe it’s better to put them in another post and organize them there 😅 otherwise this will never end!

I hope there will be deleted or additional scenes in Wren's pov (as there were with other characters in tfota). I'd like to see the scene of Wren's reunion with Bex and their parents. Or a wedding scene where it will be obvious for all members of Oak's family that they are getting married by mutual desire, not for political gain. Where she is accepted by them and is happy 😭 My girl deserves the world

Release the Wren novella where we get to see all the behind the curtain things our girl went through!! Justice for Bex!! Vivi and Taryn apology!! Oriana eating her words!!!

I really fucking hope in the next 7 books sjm has a deal for she goes back to the tog world and gives us the nox and aelin reunion as well as the luca, emrys and aelin reunions in terrasen like thats all i want then she can never touch the series again i just want a lil novella where all of them get to see eachother again cause you BEST BELIEVE emrys would be so fucking proud of aelin and would tell her stories of her mother around a hearth and nox will be baffled that the good knife thrower he met in this weird ass competition was his queen all along, he also deserves to know what really happened at the competition and what cain was doing
