A joke post I made as a spin on Resurrection OCT's Round 1 prompt, concerning collecting magical ferns for Blanca and the judges.

Thinking about soul permeability in regards to Cristabel and Mercymorn. Mainly the quasi religious reverence Mercy holds for John, despite everything, after ten thousand years of bitterness and regrets and sex parties. Mercy in Act 4 isn't just a woman who feels betrayed; she's a faithful who's lost her religion.

I've always been fascinated by the way Mercy acts around John; he's both her Emperor and sort of friends and her God, in a way that I don't think any of the other Lyctors ever come close to. They have personal loyalties to John, except when they don't, and a lovehate thing going on, but I don't think they truly worship him the way Mercy does, even when she's scolding him.

Pre TUG, I always thought that this was something Mercy did to honour Cristabel’s memory. Cristabel killed herself out of devotion and Mercy dedicated her whole existence to her remembrance; of course she needed to believe in John's divinity, to keep Cristabel’s faith alive. I thought it was a role Mercy performed, that of the fanatic, because turning her back on that side of Cristabel meant agreeing with Augustine that Cristabel hurt her by taking away her choice.

But what if it's not a mannerism Mercy developed? What if it's Cristabel’s soul peeking through?

i wanna talk about mercymorn the first. let's talk about mercymorn the first.

mercymorn, the ex cryogenicist turned master anatomist, the know-it-all flesh magician who memorized the entire human body by rote, the scientist, the skeptic, the heretic. mercymorn, who founded...the eighth house???

the eighth house. the eighth house? the spotless-white-and-delicate-chain-mail spirit magicians? the religious fanatics who carry around giant portraits of the emperor undying when they travel? the guys who explicitly model themselves after the knights templar? little miss "thou shalt not take cristabel's name in vain" founded the soul siphoner house?? the one that produced glorified human battery colum asht??

i'm not the only one who sees something strange in this, right? none of the others are this mismatched. augustine's fingerprints are still all over the fifth. we know very little about cyrus, but from what we do know, i completely buy that he founded the third. g1deon and/or pyrrha make perfect sense as the founders of the second. same goes for casseopeia, anastasia, and ulysses. where the information exists, it adds up. except in the case of mercymorn and the eighth.

but, of course, there's an obvious answer here. who do we know who was resurrected in the first wave, who worked very closely with mercymorn, who had a notable interest in the soul, who was fanatically religious, who probably wouldn't have minded the idea of a cavalier being used for anything, no matter how painful or demeaning? who do we know who could easily have been the first to suggest soul siphoning, who could have thought up eight for salvation no matter the cost in the same sitting as one flesh, one end?

personally, i can't believe it's not just commonly understood that cristabel oct is the true founder of the eighth house.

beginning with those in Israel and Palestine, and in Ukraine.

May the risen Christ open a path of peace for the war-torn peoples of those regions.

The natural interception of me having Thoughts about Cristabel’s legacy and early Lyctors timeline, in the same evening is, of course, wild speculation about what the hell was going on in the early days of Nine Houses religion.

Because! There’s so much going on there. Did John emerge from the resurrection a fully fledged religious figure? Maybe it happened later, organically, maybe by decree concurrently with the whole Emperor thing. At some points the Lyctors became Saints, people started to believe that the Tomb hid the death of God. Someone came up with the rites, someone composed the prayers.

I’m not sure I believe John was THE main architect of his own religion, because for all that he’s extremely self absorbed he also seems to have kind of a weird relationship with being worshipped. He likes to play up the Just Some Guy angle in a way that’s exclusively for his satisfaction; he likes to be acknowledged as God so he can modesty shrug it off, needs to be put on a pedestral so he can vault off it and pretend he’s doing you a favour. But he also seems to find all the ceremony boring, and it seems like what the Houses ended up with is a bit more elaborate than what John would’ve done by himself.

So I’m sitting here like. Look, this was absolutely a team effort. He crowdsourced the religion. Or maybe it was even Cristabel who initiated it, or Mercy who embraced John as a God so fevently. At which point did these guys look at each other and think: we are setting up the rituals for a state religion, and it’s so awkward.
