guess who was craving indian food but didn’t want to grubhub it lol turns out chicken curry is actually pretty doable for beginners! I’m sure mine isn’t nearly as good as what you could get at a genuine Indian restaurant but I think it tastes pretty darn good all the same ~

i'm going to georgia (the country) this summer and i remember you saying you ate something super amazing there. could you tell me what it was?
Literally everything in Georgia was delicious, but I have a few recommendations:
Try the wine. Georgian wine is amazing.
There's a white wine spirit similar to brandy called Chacha. Get yourself a shot or two.
Try both types of Katchpuri. There's a southern style that looks kinda like naan, and a northern style that looks like someone cracked an egg into a loaf of bread. They serve katchpuri everywhere, so it'll be easy to find.
There's a tarragon soda that I've only ever seen in Georgia. It's bright green. You can't miss it.
Find a Khinkali place. They're steamed dumplings filled with vegetables and minced lamb. Its like Caucasian Bao.
Clay Pot Lobio. Literally beans cooked with spices in a clay pot. Another very popular dish, and a national specialty. I went to a restaurant that was literally called "The Beanery". There are many, many versions of this dish. I've had it where the texture was like mashed potatoes or smooth refried beans, but there's also versions that are kinda like mujadara.
Fucking Pkhali. Its minced spinach (sometimes beets) and nuts and with spices. Its a vegetarian dish kinda like tabouli. Very fresh and light but shockingly flavorful.
Also the average Georgian salad is just cucumbers and tomatoes with raw onion strings with a dash of vinegar and olive oil. Most restaurants will serve them for free, but you should go out of your way to get one.

Matunuck Oyster Bar, Wakefield RI.
My favorite restaurant in Rhode Island never disappoints 😉
Everything I ordered:
Seared SCALLOPS -ginger soba noodles, bok-choy, shiitake mushrooms, crispy shallots, XO sauce.
LOBSTER PIZZA-Naan bread, lobster, mascarpone, arugula, gouda, prosciutto, mozzarella, white truffle.
OYSTER TRIO-two Grilled, two Bourbon, two Rockefeller style oysters.
CLAMS & LINGUINE RI- littlenecks, white wine, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, fresh herbs.
And of course Oysters for an appetizer🦪
For Dessert (because I never say no to dessert 🍮) Chocolate Bread Pudding!
I have reviewed this restaurant a few times and I always give it a star studded review! This 4th of July weekend was no different! I loved everything about all of our dishes.
The oysters are always fresh, the seafood is always prepped or cooked perfectly and the atmosphere is friendly, nice and fun! Everyone is there for a delicious meal and to have a great time with food 😉
If you are ever in RI please do yourself a favor and get reservations at @matunuckoysterbar! Once you eat there once you will be craving more 😉
Based on presentation and taste of all our food at @matunuckoysterbar I would rate this restaurant a 10 out of 10.

pasta, me starting to read the new chapter, see the word “naan” reading further AND SEEING JANE ACTUALLY USES HER HANDS TO EAT if it’s not obvious im ethnically *south* Indian so even tho most of the times indian food ends up being stuff from northern india, im still happy for any representation if that makes any sense- that being said, what’s your favorite dish? Also did you know that South Indian foods are primarily vegetarian and there’s lots of tasty as fuck shit you won’t find on a northern indian menu????
Aaaaah I'm so happy you enjoyed that! Eating with your hands and the naan bread was how I was taught to eat it the first time a friend introduced me to Indian food, so I was hoping that was accurate! 😅 And I totally get being excited to see a piece of that in a fic! In a place like NYC, one of the lovely things about it is you can get anything there since the city's so diverse. It's a massive melting pot and I try to show that in the food everyone's eating in the fic and i'm now living it since i've moved to a big city and can try EVERYTHING.
I did NOT it was primarily vegetarian but this makes SO much sense cause I've definitely spotted the difference between the menus! And as a vegetarian I'm always happy to not get a 'uuuh we have... a leaf we found outside? Vegetarians eat leaves right? You're an herbivore, we'll get you some leaves, TEDDY GO OUT AND SHAKE THE TREE AND GET SOME LEAVES.' And now I'm finally in a big city again that actually has both Northern and Southern Indian restaurants, including a south style like 2 mins away (old town had none, and closest town only had 2 northern Indian places, so I mostly only got southern when I was traveling). Favorite might be paneer chettinad, I could eat that all day, oh my god. 😩 OR MASALA DOSAS, holy SHIT those are good. Tried those at a street festival while traveling and I swear I ascended, turned my ass back around and ordered a second round, I need more. Still hunting for some here but I'm optimistic! I'm also happy to hear any recommendations if you have favorites. I'm slowly working through all the local southern places and their menus and there is so gd much to choose from now that I can access it. 😂

Travel Blog, Connichi 2023!
Part 1 - Thursday & Friday
As the Connichi moved from Kassel to Wiesbaden it was quite a trip for me, double the travel distance, a city I don't know and lots of stuff to happen.
I decided to write about my trip there for myself to cover some events, give some insights and share the memories. Includes phone snapshots, some sketches for situations I was in aaaand maybe some previews for photoshootings ;>
Thursday: arrival, food, traveling
Friday: First con day, cospay, food, mental health stuff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thursday, 31. August 2023
As said I had to travel to Wiesbaden, I went by car. The road on its own was mainly highway but before I got to the highway I got stuck in traffic for almost 1 hour. After 5 hours of traveling alone on bad mental health I arrived in Wiesbaden before my friends did and waited for them
Apparently I looked rather pitiful and was approached by some weirdo who tried to give me candy and cigarettes and was super offended by me telling them off. I'm not used to people trying to prey on me but urgh, that was creepy af.
After my friends arrived I ordered my first Starbucks (it was an almond chai latte) as I didn't have anything to eat aside my breakfast that day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We walked around in the city a bit and ended up in the indian restaurant I had researched before and I had some really delicious paneer with Naan bread and a Mango Cheesecake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But ... Diamy and I decided to go for "medium" spicy and I underestimated it... I .... cried :'D
We later on found a super cute bakery and @adragonstale and I were totally in awe about the pastries they had.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm glad my friends arrived the same day, they really saved my mood.
Friday, 1. September 2023 - First Convention day
As the first day starts later on I decided to get out into the city as past!Allen and put on the Nea wig later on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We walked a bit through the city, did some window shopping and I was able to share my wisdom about food and nutrition, I am such a nerd about it. Also sightseeing and just being casual about everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that we decided to get changed and get into our convention attire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The con itself... dunno. I was missing a whole bunch of publishers as there was only two bigger ones and 1-2 smaller ones, the other big ones weren't there, the Matsuri was lovelessly showed behind a construction fence, the artist alley was bigger, yes, but badly ventilated on friday that even I - who is freezing all the time - felt like I would be melting on the spot. Merch room was not even tempting for me I rushed through it, the other rooms were.. well... indoor photo shoot corners, workshops and all that. The invited guests all no names to me, therefore I skipped on the program. You didn't even have any anime series or movies airing at the con (which was a usual thing before) you had to leave the con and pay extra if you wanted to see old anime movies. Well. It wasn't my cup of tea aside the fact I think the building has no personality, I don't like those soulless new constructed modern styled bricks of congress halls. Yes you had the option to book photo spots in two older buildings BUT the slots were taken super fast and it was one location on Saturday, the other on the Sunday and .. well.. in Kassel you had a ton of old buildings you could visit. Wiesbaden has some nice spots too but things like the park being full of duck poop, drug addicts and garbage to begin with didn't help much.
During the con I .. somehow spiraled into the the now called "Anxiety Chihuahua" state. I met some D.gray-man cosplayers and was actually recognized as Nea BUT got told there would be a group meeting the day after and that it was for an existing group (not noticing it was ... my ... group ... ) and my head was all like "oh god now WHAT IF" and that made me sweaty, anxious and my mood in the end was horrible. To explain that: in my cosplay past I was part of some groups but in the end was ignored or replaced by people who were thinner or prettier than me, even when we had special outfits and the other cosplayer didn't have those outfits or even when I went to a certain event for that exact group ... it's past wounds. As my mental health was already a bit cracked it was easy for me to snap and get down.
I was super awkward and ran around like crazy, almost yelled at that one group that they were super cool and that i adore their costumes and just loudly said that I am just a fool and will be gone now. On the next day they told me they saw me earlier but I was too fast to approach. Uhm, yeah. Hyper anxiety clown here. Of course I didn't take much photos with any Cosplayers as I was too nervous which didn't help as I wanted some memories of course.
Tumblr media
In the end it got that bad that as we went out for food that day I just stood there "I don't want any, I hate everything"; but I had 30k steps done and just a few snacks therefore... I needed something. Too little food and water makes the brain sad too and I think that added to my anxiety getting worse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end we stopped at a small thai restaurant and my friends had to order for me as I totally refused everything. I knew it was my health being bad and I told them "just order a thing, I will pay. Just no bread". And @adragonstale got me tofu curry with rice (instead of bread) it was warm comforting food. Thank you again. I felt really better after that.
Even that much better that we did some photos of me as Nea!
Tumblr media
And we discovered Wiesbaden has a wild population of parrots, they nearly flew into my face while we took pics.
I went back to my car after that and arrived in time for the Matsuri fireworks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was super beat that day after two quite exhausting days and hoped the main day would be better as the two prior. It was about time to debut Allen, and to face my fear with the group meeting and my past cosplay trauma.
Tumblr media
Lil concluding car selfie aka what if Nea would steal Allen's glasses.

Lunch Date
I went out to eat today.
I went to the restaurant (table for one, please)
To a restaurant I'd never tried
Indian buffet never disappoints:
Naan, tandoori, butter chicken, paneer
Rich foods and deep orange curry
(Managed not to spill it on my sweater (cream colored sweater))
The restaurant was mostly empty,
Soft murmurs of conversation,
Instrumental music above
(Why do they always play western style piano solos in Indian restaurants?)
I sat and ate my food
No book, no social media,
I left my phone in my bag.
I had gone there on a whim
After visiting some pet stores just to watch the critters
(I always wonder if it bothers the employees
To have people come in and treat pet stores like a mini zoo.
I'd be buying if I had the money and my landlord allowed pets, I swear!)
I visited the pet stores because I had been in Walmart,
Getting the finishing touches for my new apartment
And remembered how some of them used to have aquariums
(Does anyone else remember that?)
So I went to watch the fish,
And the kittens and the parakeets and guinea pigs
And the one sleeping corn snake
Until I decided I was hungry.
And I sat there in the restaurant,
No company, no distractions,
And ate my meal,
And it was enough.

What Is the Difference Between Tiffin and Lunch Box?
The difference between a tiffin and a lunch box can vary based on context. Tiffin often refers to a light mid-morning or midday snack or meal. The term lunch is usually reserved for a full-fledged meal eaten in a restaurant or school cafeteria.
In addition, the term tiffin can also refer to a container for carrying food. Whether you are looking for the best lunch boxes for adults or want to start an Indian tiffin service business, you should be aware of the differences between these two terms.
Tumblr media
A tiffin can be divided into multiple layers and compartments, each with its own lid.
Traditionally, the bottom would contain the meal’s starch, such as rice or naan, the middle layer would include salad and pickles to be eaten with the carbohydrate, and the topmost tier would hold a protein such as chicken tikka masala, Butter Chicken or vegetable samosas. Today, tiffins can be packed with any combination of food from breakfast to dinner.
Unlike traditional tiffins, modern ones are made of metal, including stainless steel lunch boxes, which can be bought in bulk from wholesale tiffin manufacturers. This material is popular for a variety of reasons, including its durability and ability to keep food hot or cold.
Moreover, these containers are lightweight and aesthetically appealing. Are you looking for a tiffin service near me? Maasbest provides the best quality tiffin food in the UK.
They are available in a wide range of sizes and styles, with some even coming with built-in utensils or small cutlery. They are also leak-proof and hermetic, ensuring your food stays fresh and intact all day.
The best tiffin service in the UK serves a variety of Indian dishes, like Saag Paneer, Dal Makhani and Navratan Korma. The best Gujarati tiffin service near me offers a variety of Indian dishes to suit any taste.
What is a Tiffin Box Indian?
Tiffin or dabbas are the quintessential lunch boxes of India and the sub-continent. Hand-painted and made from stainless steel, these classic compartment boxes are easy to use, eco-conscious, plastic-free, and very stylish.
They also help keep food hot or cold longer and taste fresher than a plastic alternative. You can choose the tiffin menu on the website.
Tiffin is an archaic British word that stuck in India during colonial times.
Today might refer to a light lunch, afternoon tea or sweet snack in any Indian cuisine, from rava idlis to tamatar chaat, to the containers they are packed in, to the men who carry them to work or school (tiffin wallahs) or to restaurants serving these snacks. Punjabi Tiffin Service prepares authentic Indian food at reasonable prices.
What Is Tiffin? The tiffin is usually divided into one or more compartments; each compartment can store different foods. A typical arrangement is to have the bottom of the tiffin with the meal’s carbohydrate, such as bread, rice or naan, the middle with curries and accompaniments and then the top with proteins, such as meat or fish.
The advantage of this is that the entire meal can be eaten from the tiffin, and no additional plates are required. Are you looking for Vegetarian Tiffin Services Near Me? Maas Best brings healthy and hygienic Indian food home to the office or work.
Tiffins are now available in all shapes and sizes, with a huge variety of designs, materials and finishing options. Many tiffins are made from stainless steel, as they are durable and have a beautiful finish that looks great and is easy to clean. They are also lightweight and easy to carry. Begin by acquainting yourself with the two primary categories of Indian cuisine: North Indian and South Indian dishes. North Indian cuisine typically features creamy, rich gravies and a variety of breads like ‘Naan’ and ‘Roti’. On the other hand, South Indian cuisine is known for its rice-based dishes such as ‘Dosa’ and ‘Idli’, often served with flavorful lentil soups and coconut-based chutneys.
Delve deeper into understanding the staple dishes. Curries like ‘Butter Chicken’ and ‘Palak Paneer’ are great starting points for newcomers. Each dish is often accompanied by a brief description of its ingredients and preparation style, aiding in your selection. Don’t overlook the appetizers, as items like ‘Samosas’ (savory pastries) and ‘Pakoras’ (fried fritters) are not just delicious but also offer a glimpse into the range of flavors and textures in Indian cuisine.
Spice Levels: Finding Your Comfort Zone
The brilliance of Indian cuisine lies in its use of spices, from the mildly aromatic to the intensely hot. It’s important to communicate your preference for spice levels when ordering. Restaurants are generally accommodating and can adjust the spice level to suit your taste. If you’re new to Indian cuisine, start with milder dishes like ‘Tikka Masala’ or ‘Malai Kofta’, which are flavorful but not overly spicy. Gradually, you can venture into spicier dishes like ‘Rogan Josh’ or ‘Chettinad Curry’.
Remember, it’s not just about heat. Indian spices include a range of flavors like cumin, coriander, cardamom, and turmeric, each adding a unique dimension to the dish. If you’re unsure about what to choose, ask for a ‘Thali’ – a platter offering a variety of small dishes, allowing you to sample different flavors and spice levels.
Diving into Diversity: Exploring Regional Specialties
India’s culinary landscape is as diverse as its culture, with each region offering distinctive dishes. Embrace this diversity by exploring regional specialties. North Indian cuisine, for instance, is renowned for its hearty meat dishes and rich, creamy gravies. Signature dishes include ‘Biryani’ (a fragrant rice dish), ‘Rogan Josh’ (a Kashmiri lamb curry), and ‘Chole Bhature’ (a spicy chickpea curry with deep-fried bread).
Conversely, South Indian cuisine is famous for its lighter, rice-based dishes and tangy flavors. ‘Masala Dosa’ (a thin, crispy pancake filled with spiced potatoes) and ‘Fish Curry’ are exemplary of this region’s culinary offerings. Coastal areas like Goa and Kerala offer a bounty of seafood dishes, incorporating coconut and tamarind for a unique flavor profile with The Curry Restaurant.
Exploring regional specialties not only enhances your dining experience but also gives you a taste of India’s rich cultural and culinary diversity. Every dish tells a story of the region’s history, climate, and traditions, making your meal an exploration of India’s vast culinary heritage.
The Art of Pairing: Combining Dishes for a Complete Meal
Indian cuisine is a symphony of flavors, and the key to enjoying it fully is understanding the art of pairing. A typical Indian meal consists of a harmony of different components – a main dish, a side dish, a carbohydrate (like naan or rice), and a refreshing accompaniment. For instance, pairing a spicy curry with a milder lentil dish like ‘Dal’ can create a balanced meal. Adding a side of ‘Raita’, a yogurt-based condiment, can cool the palate, especially if the main dish is on the spicier side.
When ordering bread, consider the gravy of your main dish. Rich, creamy curries like ‘Butter Chicken’ are wonderfully complemented by buttery ‘Naan’, while drier dishes like ‘Tandoori Chicken’ can be paired with softer bread like ‘Roti’ or ‘Paratha’. For rice dishes, ‘Biryani’ is a meal in itself, but plain basmati rice can be a perfect base for soaking up the flavors of a curry.
Remember, Indian cuisine is about balance and variety. Don’t shy away from experimenting with different combinations to discover what tantalizes your taste buds the most.
Savoring the Experience: Beyond the Plate
Enjoying an Indian meal is about immersing yourself in a cultural experience. The ambiance of the restaurant, often adorned with traditional Indian decor, sets the stage for your culinary journey. Take a moment to appreciate the background music, which might feature classical Indian tunes or contemporary Bollywood hits, adding an authentic touch to your dining experience.
Don’t forget to explore the beverage menu. Traditional Indian drinks like ‘Lassi’, a yogurt-based smoothie, or ‘Masala Chai’, a spiced tea, are not just refreshing but also complement the flavors of the food. In some restaurants, you might find a selection of Indian beers or wines, which can be a pleasant addition to your meal.
Engage with the staff or the chef if possible. They can offer insights into the dishes, and their origins, and even share stories about Indian food culture. This interaction can enrich your dining experience, making it more than just a meal, but a memorable cultural encounter.
Wrapping Up Your Indian Dining Adventure: Tips and Etiquette
As you conclude your culinary journey, a few tips on Indian dining etiquette can enhance your experience. In many parts of India, eating with your hands is a common practice and is considered a way to connect more intimately with your food. However, it’s always right-handed eating only, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean.
When it comes to tipping, while it’s not mandatory in Indian culture, it is certainly appreciated. In many Western countries, a 10-15% tip is customary in Indian restaurants, depending on the level of service.
Lastly, Indian meals often end with a small serving of ‘Paan’ or mouth fresheners like fennel seeds, which aid digestion and freshen your breath. Accepting this gesture rounds off the dining experience nicely.
Conclusion
Dining at an Indian restaurant is a delightful exploration of tastes, aromas, and traditions. By following these steps, you’re not just enjoying a meal; you’re partaking in a rich cultural experience. So go ahead, step into the enchanting world of Indian cuisine, and let the vibrant flavors lead you on a memorable gastronomic adventure!
