Dasim starts again. “Hal Jordan of sector 2814, former Green Lantern of Sector 2814, former Yellow Lantern of Sector 2814, how do you plead for the assistance and fraternization with known renegade Green Lantern Thaal Sinestro?” They’re making him say it? The spot where Sinestro’s ring once sat still burns. The bruises on his hips still haven’t healed. His face must show an unimpressed look because the lanterns around start whispering that he doesn’t care what he did. He sees a flash of red in the corner of his eye. He doesn’t look. He doesn’t look. “Guilty. We all know I’m guilty.” Dasim sighs and shakes his head. He thinks it's typical Jordan bravo. It’s not. It’s just the truth. He’s guilty. They all know he’s guilty. He murder Guy in cold blood. He sided with Sinestro, the man he fought with for years. Twenty-five years since he got his ring. Everyone knows what happened between them.

To me, the best Hal Jordan stories aren't just him disobeying the Guardians, or him being this huge believer in the Corps. It's the tension between the two. How he would swear by the Guardians, but he's just as likely to swear at them. How knowing when to be the believer and when to be the renegade made him the best of all time, but how his faith in the Corps failing him would break him, would break the whole Corps. Not just because he'd take his rebellion further then ever, but because he couldn't let go of his belief that the Corps could fix anything, that heroes should always be able to save everything. How his redemption was based literally in faith in the divine plan and rebelling against G-d's vengeance.
And like. Viewing the Corps as a religious experience to Hal. People from interfaith households often have complicated relationships with faith, but Hal in particular is Jewish and Catholic. Judaism encouraging questioning and even doubt, and staying attached to the tradition through them, and Catholic traditions of keeping faith even through the doubt, the lapsed Catholics who still find times to make it to church. I will never stop talking, or thinking, about Catholic Jewish Hal.

Helen get kidnap by the yellow lantern
"My uncle is so gonna beat you up." That's what Sinestro hears in the instant before he attacks, wiping out the group of his renegade Lanterns without breaking a sweat.
No doubt having heard the commotion, the young human struggles to get free. Who she is or what interest she is to the Corps mystifies Sinestro.
"Uncle?" says the human, turning her head from side to side as she tries to see through her blindfold. No one but Sinestro and his dead Lanterns remain however, so she is wasting time calling to someone who cannot hear.
Still, it makes Sinestro curious. "Who is your uncle?" he questions and immediately the human freezes on hearing his voice.
Quickly though, she recovers with a toss of her head, brown hair flowing around her face. "Like I'd tell you, evil eggplant alien."
The insult is familiar but, being uninterested in learning anything about the humans he meets, Sinestro needs a moment to place it. His eyebrows lift. "Oliver Queen?" he guesses.
"Not Batman, no." Her lips curve into a small smile like there's a private joke. Then her chin lifts. "I'm not going to tell you so stop asking." It's surprisingly commanding. "My uncle will so get you."
About had enough, Sinestro stalks over and pulls off the blindfold. He glares down at the human who just glares back with interest.
"I'm not afraid," she tells him and it's quite true. As she is the one bound and in hostile territory, she's either not very intelligent or her uncle really is someone to be wary of. "My uncle says you're more afraid of us than we are of you."
"Very wise," Sinestro murmurs, quirking an amused eyebrow, "but I am no human predator." He bares his teeth.
"I don't know, Sinestro." That's a new voice entering the conversation and the young human's expression lights up as she looks around for the source. "I think she has a better measure of the situation than you do."
Cautiously, Sinestro backs off, widening the gap between himself and Hal Jordan. He's quiet as he watches Hal free his niece. It seems her faith was not misplaced.

Compare/Contrast of Bradford Buzzard And Thaal Sinestro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok. Here I’ll be doing a compare/contrast between Bradford Buzzard from the DuckTales (2017) TV series and Thaal Sinestro from the Green Lantern comics. It occurred to me that those 2 have quite a bit in common but are also a bit different. Also, Spoiler Alert for the DuckTales (2017) TV series and the Green Lantern comics. With that out of the way, let’s dive right in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them used to be members of a benevolent organization that wanted to protect the innocent. As shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford was once a member of SHUSH, an organization that wanted to protect the world from evil villains. And as shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #33, Sinestro was once a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an organization that wanted to protect the universe from evil villains. Another similarity between them here is that both of them strongly disagreed with those respective organizations’ methods and believed that those organizations had to rule with an iron fist in order to maintain order. As also shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford believed that SHUSH had to “rule the world from the shadows with an iron fist” in order to maintain order. And as shown in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro believed that the Green Lantern Corps had to rule the universe by instilling fear in order to maintain order. The difference between them here, though, is how they left those organizations in the first place. As also shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford pretty much left of his own volition and later became the CEO of McDuck Enterprises. And as stated in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro was deemed a renegade when the rest of the Green Lantern Corps found out he was ruling his homeworld of Korugar with an iron fist and then his Green Lantern Ring was taken away from him. So, Bradford left SHUSH on his own accord whereas Sinestro was kicked out of the Green Lantern Corps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them went on to help founded a new organization full of evil people in order to use them to spread order. As shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford founded the evil organization known as FOWL with the help of Black Heron. And as shown in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro founded the evil organization known as the Sinestro Corps. The difference between them here, though, is how they wanted to use their organizations to maintain order. As also shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Bradford wanted FOWL to “rule the world from the shadows with an iron fist”. And as shown in the Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special, Sinestro wanted the Sinestro Corp to instill fear across the universe. So, Bradford wanted FOWL to rule from the shadows whereas Sinestro wanted the Sinestro Corps to instill fear across the cosmos. Another difference between them here is what their endgame was. As shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure! Part 3: Tale’s End…’, Bradford wanted to get rid of all “unpredictable factors” such as the McDuck family and even FOWL after it had served its purpose. And as shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #26, Sinestro wanted the Sinestro Corps to wage war against the Green Lantern Corps in order to trick the Guardians Of The Universe into allowing the Green Lantern Corps to use lethal force as part of his plan to slowly convince the universe that the Green Lantern Corps are to be feared in order for the Green Lantern Corps to make his idea of a universe of peace come true. So, Bradford wanted to take down the enemy whereas Sinestro wanted to make the enemy work in his favor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them had an archenemy they wanted to manipulate into staying out of their way. For Bradford, there’s Scrooge McDuck. And for Sinestro, there’s Hal Jordan. As revealed in the episode ‘The Last Adventure Part 3!: Tale’s End…’, Bradford was the one who told Scrooge’s niece Della about the Spear Of Selene which led to Della getting lost in space and thus caused Scrooge to quit adventuring for a long time because of it. And as revealed in Green Lantern Rebirth #3, Sinestro was the one who woke Parallax from their slumber in the Green Lantern Central Power Battery thus allowing Parallax to manipulate Hal Jordan into turning evil shortly after the destruction of Hal’s home of Coast City. So, Bradford caused the adventurer Scrooge to give up on adventuring and Sinestro caused the hero Hal Jordan to give up on his heroism. The difference between them here, though, is exactly how Bradford’s and Sinestro’s machinations caused Scrooge McDuck and Hal Jordan respectively to give up on what they believed in. As @lemonghosti explained in his TBH The Extent Of The Abuse And Isolation That Bradford Enacted Towards Scrooge Is Not Talked About Enough post (that post doesn’t exactly have a title; so, I decided to use its first sentence as its title), Bradford manipulated Scrooge into giving up on adventuring by “taking advantage of his grief (that Bradford himself caused) to make him give up on a crucial part of himself and think of it as trouble”. Sinestro as well as Parallax manipulated Hal Jordan into giving up on his heroism by taking advantage of his trauma from the destruction of Coast City to the point that Hal, as shown in Green Lantern Vol 3 #49, lashed out against the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. So, Bradford caused Scrooge to doubt himself to the point that he gave up whereas Sinestro caused Hal Jordan to think of his way as the only way to the point that he lashed out against the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them refuse to accept the fact that they’re villains and strongly believed in their mission to bring order. As shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure!Part 3: Tale’s End…’, Bradford strongly believed in his mission to bring order to the point that he desperately tried to tell the other villains that he isn’t a villain when he was defeated. And as shown in the Green Lantern Vol 5 #5, Sinestro said to his people that he only wanted what was best for Korugar and refused to believe that he crossed the line. Furthermore, their desire to bring order was so strong that they were both able to wield a weapon that’s powered by great amounts of mental strength in some way. As shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure! Part 3: Tale’s End…’, Bradford was able to wield the Sword Of Swanstantine and, as shown in the episode ‘The Split Sword Of Swanstantine!’, Scrooge was able to wield the Sword Of Swanstantine while Black Heron, on the other hand, wasn’t since the Sword Of Swanstantine could only be wielded by those with great mental strength. And as shown in Green Lantern Vol 4 #32, Sinestro was able to wield a Green Lantern Ring which, as shown throughout Geoff John’s Green Lantern run, could only be wielded by those who have the ability to overcome great fear. The difference between Bradford and Sinestro there, though, is what kind of strength they had. As also shown in the episode ‘The Last Adventure! Part 3: Tale’s End…’, while Bradford began to change Bradford into a more monstrous form since, according to Beakley, it also “amplifies who you are inside”. And as shown in Sinestro Vol 1 #1, Sinestro was able to control his fear and use it to wield his Yellow Lantern Ring, a weapon powered by fear. So, that probably means that Bradford had strength but still hadn’t come to terms with his insecurities about being a villain whereas Sinestro used his own insecurities as a strength.
Well, that’s all for this post.
See you all next time.

Justice League - Darkseid War - Green Lantern
Tumblr media
Or why this comic with too many hyphens is one of the best Hal Jordan issues ever written.
I’ll start off with saying I don’t particularly enjoy for the way Hal has been written in recent years because while the core of his personality is still recognisable, his subtleties have been overlooked. Tom King manages to bring some of that back while exploring what it means to be human and divine. It’s the sort of thing that has an impact even if one isn’t familiar with Hal’s history with Parallax.
However knowing the events of Emerald Twilight definitely makes the story more meaningful. We know at one point Hal despaired at the ruins of his hometown and made a similar decision to attain great power, but refused to let go of it. While later issues retconned his actions to being under the influence of a space bug, I couldn’t help but think of it as he asked the Mother box ring to destroy itself. If the events of Zero Hour had gone the way he intended it to, would he also have given up that power like he had after fixing Oa? Personally I thought it was unlikely, but I appreciated the parallels nonetheless.
This issue canonises Hal’s Jewish origins and makes it clear in a way the previous mentions in a more obscure series was unable to. Although it was explicitly mentioned in his Spectre run, it didn’t become common knowledge until now. While this comic makes clear that his father wasn’t particularly religious, it isn’t far fetched to assume neither was his mother. The Jordan’s have been shown to celebrate Christmas even in Spectre.
This isn’t the first time Hal has interacted with his younger self, the end of Geoff John’s run on Green Lantern had a younger Hal mistaking his older self for their father, but while that interaction occurred almost immediately after the crash that killed their father this time it’s after the funeral. This time his younger self is a lot more emotional and raw over the events as he’s had time to process what happened, but not enough time to start moving on.
And if that wasn’t enough, Doc Shaner’s art is absolutely gorgeous and it’s definitely worth reading just for the artwork. I also really enjoyed the Green Lantern take on Lightray’s costume to the point I’m genuinely disappointed it was only a one off and not continued for his Renegade stint.

A little Hal Jordan design I’ve been working on. Inspired by the Spectre and Renegade runs (long hair Hal for the win!)  Wanted to play around with Hal’s gender, you know, as a treat.
