R E D. O C H R E. I thought I would pop my face on Instagram to say hi to you all! I have had quite a few new followers recently so this is me with my latest painting. This gorgeous deep and richly pigmented colour is from a gorgeous red ochre from the Red Ochre Trail in Wick. Swipe to see the earth for yourself. I am yet to visit and collect some of this earth myself but I will be making my way there soon with the doggy…not sure she will return to London white but most probably very RED! trying something new with a piece of yellow Moroccan ochre from Kremer pigments. Drawing directly onto the paper with the stone. The stone feels very greasy. It probably has clay in it. Therefore, the drawn lines can be activated with water. Then I use self made water/acrylic inks, made with earth pigments. I use iron ore (bean ore collected by myself), moraine stone powder, manganese black and a mix of various hematites from Kremer pigments. The inks are easy to make. Just put a bit of pigment into a small jar and add some water and a few drops of gloss acrylic varnish or painting medium (or watercolor medium),. Stir, and the ink is ready to use with a brush or a reed pen or for pouring directly onto a surface. Up to now I don't know how long these inks will be good, so I make only small amounts at once. They need to be stirred up every time you want to use them. USGS photographer Alan Cressler, UT Professor Jan Simek, Historian/Author Rickey Butch Walker & veteran caver Scott Shaw w/ SCCI. I learned about the Dstretch app through Alan, then spent the majority of 2018 searching rock walls and caves for faded red ochre pictographs in bankhead forest. In January 2019 I came across 2 faint red lines & applied Dstretch filters revealing the 2nd image in this post. There's no doubt more red ochre paintings exist but are hard to find, so keep your eyes peeled out there! #Prehistoric red ochre #pictographs . In a small #rockshelter this human-like form greets me. I know not who it is, or what he he trying to tell me. Its arms are up, as if to scare me. All animals make themselves look bigger when trying to be intimidating. . What is the round geometric shape? A calendar? A crest? A ball for use in sports? None of the above? .
