finnie came over after work last night and we sat at my kitchen table, drinking tequila with tooth cracking cold bottles of grape pop and talking about the abandoned house behind the old school, rabid beavers, strawberry soju, the loose lioness, interstate latex fires, locket cats, and last days. it was a nice night

Writing request where Lisa does get sent to a psych ward.
Thinking a little angsty there, huh? I hope you don't mind the direction I took it, I just couldn't resist. I hope you enjoy!
Tw: allusions to suicide
🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦
Lisa hadn’t spoken in a week and a half, and it was doubtful that she ever would again.
The last words she had said had been desperate pleas for help, screamed at the top of her lungs in the hopes that someone, living or dead, would come to her rescue as she was dragged towards the transport van for Serenity Manor. But no such help came; her father had only watched her be dragged away with sad eyes, and her wicked stepmother was smirking, eyes flashing and victorious. Taffy was at cheer practice, and her absence meant the loss of Lisa’s last line of defense.
It had all been Janet’s doing; after Lisa smashed the bathroom mirror, she had decided that enough was enough and pulled her influences in the hospital to get her admitted to the psych ward, citing incidents of Lisa being a dangerous, reclusive vandal and needing residential treatment. Lisa didn’t even have time to protest her case before the guards had pulled up to the front door immediately after she returned from her shift at Wayne’s, and she suddenly found herself being wrestled into the white vehicle for the whole nosy neighborhood to watch.
And watch they did; the last thing she saw before the car doors closed on her was the sea of Brookview citizens, all staring with wide eyes and harsh whispers as the Swallows girl got taken away “like she should have from the beginning”.
And then her world was dark, and it didn’t get much brighter when they arrived at the facility.
She was silent through the entire registration and rooming process. Janet had clearly been chomping at the bit to get her out of the house so most of it had been done for her ahead of time, but she refused to speak as they handed her a new, dull grey set of linen clothes to change into, cut her nails so she couldn’t scratch herself, and fitted her with special socks, ones meant to keep her from falling or running away too fast.
She knew, in some deep, long locked away corner of her mind that she should be fighting, be protesting, standing up against this, but the voice of outrage was drowned out by the tidal wave of hopelessness that swelled inside her and refused to subside, nearly drowning her as they led her down the hall by her arm. .
Her room was a bland thing with whitewashed walls, bars on the windows and a bed too low to the ground to hurt herself on or with, and as the attendants closed the door for “lights out” oh her first night she hadn’t even bothered to make it to the stained mattress; she just sank down onto the floor where she was standing and cried soundlessly.
The routine hadn’t deviated much from that in the coming days, nor would it for the foreseeable future.
Though she got out of bed when they told her, she hardly woke up; she ate her tasteless food without blinking, she sat in the recreation areas during the several hours of unstructured time they were given and stared ahead, waiting for the attendants to usher her to the next bought of mindlessness. She didn’t chat with the other patients, she didn’t answer the nurse’s questions with anything more than a miniscule nod or head shake when asked about her basic needs.
She had overheard Taffy call her a zombie once, on the phone with her friends a few months after she moved into Janet’s house.
She was most of the way there. Only one thing left to do, but the facility had made it impossible to complete the last step. Damn them.
Speaking of Taffy, she visited as often as she could. Janet wouldn’t set foot in the place, and her father had stopped by once before making a hasty exit once he realized his daughter was back to being mute, but Taffy cut school and snuck over every other day. She was a welcome pop of color against the drab landscape of Lisa’s mind, though she did notice the dark circles under her eyes and the occasional flinch when far-off doors slammed.
Her voice was more subdued as she whispered to Lisa about how many arguments she was having with her mother for Lisa’s sake, trying to bring her home and apologizing for not being able to say goodbye. She brought Lisa things, when she could; the photo of her mother, a tape player that got confiscated immediately, and posters from her bedroom with the corners ripped, which told her what she already knew.
She was being erased. Janet was tearing up her room and throwing out everything she still clung to from the Before times, and even if she made it out of this goddamned cell then she would have nowhere to go, no one to miss her since to them, she was already gone.
She might as well have been, for all the good living was doing her.
She only felt remotely like herself at night, when she was able to lay on her back with her arms crossed like she was laying in her coffin, and dream. She lost herself in the labyrinth of her mind, thinking of her mother and how sheltered she had felt in her arms, writing new poetry that now went a few shades darker than ‘pitch black, and of Bachelor’s and her favorite grave.
She hoped he missed her. At least then someone would.
It was on one of these nights when the storm started, flashes of green lighting up her peripheries as she counted the spaces in between thunderclaps like her mom had taught her to when she was five. She was imagining winged figures getting strikes and spares when her imaginings were interrupted by another peal of thunder, this one sounding dangerously close by.
She pulled herself out of her imagings so she could watch the following bolt of lightning, and in doing so she ended up locking eyes with the figure looming above her, their face completely obscured by a massive pile of mud and roots.
Thunder boomed, and the being leaned closer, reaching out a hand to her and groaning.
The next flash of unnatural green lightning perfectly illuminated her horrified face, and the thunder drowned out the sound of her scream.
🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦
Lisa’s eyes shot open and she lay in bed panting as sweat pooled under her bangs, seemingly unable to move. She was breathing so hard that she was afraid her lungs were going to expand out her chest, and it took her several minutes both to calm down and realize where she was.
She was in her bedroom, her wax carvings still on the walls around her in poetic fragments, her dark comforter was tangled around her legs and the bright red numbers on her digital bedside clock read 2:47.
Her breathing started to come easier as her eyes fluttered closed in relief; she was okay. Janet was dead, she hadn’t been admitted, she was still in her room, still with-
A gentle touch on her arm made her startle, and she opened her eyes to see the figure of a man looming over her, the same one from her nightmare and yet distinctly different. Despite herself, she tensed, her sleep and adrenaline-addled brain warning her of danger and telling her to run before the figure was retreating slightly, leaning over to the other end of the bed. Her lamp flickered on and in the soft yellow light she could see her corpse companion, his eyes wide and brow furrowed in concern.
She looked at him in the light, saw Janet’s earring shining in his left ear and the green stitches on the wrist of the hand that was hovering between them, saw his dark eye circles, the pink floral nightgown she had given him and the worried dip of his mouth, and she sighed shakily, the pressure in her chest alleviating.
He groaned at her, clearly trying to ask what was wrong and if she was okay, but his ability to speak still hadn’t returned to him. She understood him perfectly though, and she grabbed his hand and squeezed it while she ran her fingers through her hair.
“It’s alright, I’m okay. Just a nightmare, that’s all. They haven’t been that realistic since my mom died. It just rattled me a bit, I guess.”
He hummed in sympathetic understanding, and his eyes flickered with uncertainty. She tilted her head at him as he took a breath, making a decision before reaching out with his other hand, eyebrows lifted in a way that clearly said, ‘May I?’
She nodded, her heart skipping a beat as he pulled her to him, running his hands up and down her back and arms as he rested his chin on her hair, her head tucked neatly into his chest. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, the air hitching in her lungs as it escaped. Her undead partner began to hum quietly above her, the sound echoing around his empty chest, and she cuddled closer.
She felt him squeeze her tighter in a comforting and protective way, and the last remnants of her fear melted away.
How could she have ever been afraid of him?

There's a nonzero chance that it was Jinx's idea to frame the Firelights for the hexgem heist. The first time we see Jinx on a job, she fails to secure the shipment of Shimmer as the last line of defense. To make up the loss and more to assuage her own insecurity, she not only steals the hexgem and some related research papers, she blatantly causes as much mayhem as possible. Like not even the fact she put her tag on the burning building, but she vandalized Jayce and Viktor's lab to rub it in their faces. The fact that these two things happen back to back, coupled with Sevika's assessment of Jinx's performance, primed us as an audience to think this is only a minor escalation in her exploits and erratic behavior.
I think the flagrant disregard for any kind of subtlety was on purpose. Jinx's capable of doing a task quietly and subtly while still adding her own style, look at how she kidnapped Caitlyn while dealing eith the after effects of her Shimmer surgery. Obviously, the heist has Jinx's name written all over it, but you'd have to know her name first to know she did it, and only a small circle of people actually did. The Council definitely didn't know who she was. Jinx was probably banking on the wall of silence Silco created for her to obscure the truth, not hide the crime, just the culprit.
Jinx knew there would be consequences for what she did. This isn't the first time she blew up a building in Piltover, the last time that happened Piltover, flooded the place with enforcers and wrecked her life. I imagine if she learned anything from the first time, it's that Piltover always needs a scapegoat, but this time instead of Vander being conflicted, Silco would readily give names, and the Firelights filled that list for them.
When Silco went to Jinx's lab to confront her on the what she did. Jinx laughs it off, and I just thought "oh Jinx isn't taking the situation seriously, she's a loose cannon that gets results". But then I didn't take her surroundings into account. First she has the gem, and around her are not only one of her grenades, the kind she used in the bombing (shrapnel's still littering the scene), covered in Firelight tags, but she was working on Firelight themed tactical bombs that she later used on the bridge. Now it's easy to think she covered the grenade with hourglasses because she had Ekko and his team on her brain as they had another confrontation, and to hint to the audience he was the secret leader. But now it makes more sense that she prepping to do more damage under the Firelights name. Jinx wasn't laughing because she didn't care what happens to her and Silco. Jinx was laughing because she already had a plan for what happens next and Silco needed to keep up.
It never really occurred to me because it seemed like such a Silco to do. But then I thought, why wouldn't he do something like this earlier? I know Ekko said Silco has sent enforcers after them before, but I feel like if Silco was really pressed to slaughter a bunch of kids, he would have already. The only thing I think that could have held him back was Jinx. Not in a, "I don't want to hurt you by killing someone you care about" way, but more in a "I want you to be strong and kill the past with your own hands" way. Silco also probably felt more secure in Jinx and Ekko's dynamic because it's hinted that in the past, she chose to be by his side rather than Ekko's.
But why all this now? Well Jinx was paranoid and really upset after she failed the mission, and that happens to make her spiteful on top of all that. Rember, she stabbed Silco in the face when she thought he was lying to her (it would have been a big lie if it were true tho). When Jinx failed she probably attributed part of her frustration and on to the Firelights, they were there to sabotage the cargo, and chose to fuck them over because of it. This would be her blessing to finally get rid of them.
Just a little deeper than that, she's recreated the same stunt that changed her life forever. But this time she's in control, and she has a father that's not conflicted about throwing someone under the bus for her.
I feel ridiculous being so focused on this scenario, becuase the idea switching from Silco to Jinx doesn't materially change anything about how things will play out for the Firelights. If this were actually true, all she has to do is not say anything because everyone, including the audience, would think Silco thought of it. Ekko would still her blame her by association, but to know that they were driven out into further isolation because Jinx would honestly put him in a similar position to Caitlyn. Where both think back to the choice to not take her out earlier and all the grief it gave them later down the line. Jinx still has all of next season to watch the consequences unfurl for the Firelights, because her bomb may have been defused, but it STILL hasn't proverbially gone off.
(Maybe Viktor will defuse it like he did her actual bomb).

guys you do not understand how much i think of enjolras's favorite band being the vandals it's a constant thought.
i think all of them dabble in the music a bit but he's obviously the biggest listener/fan of the genre. and he follows more classic while everyone splits off into subgenres as what they'd rather listen to.
or they at least listen to non-punk political music because that exists.
i imagine enjolras recreating a photo of me where im holding up a jfk speech vinyl with a caption saying "couldn't find him dead kennedys vinyl so i got him a dead kennedy"

I made these *checks notes* 5 days ago and forgot to post them 😅
anyway I was tagged by @herearedragons to do these picrews for my OCs. I picked my two PoE Watchers bc they're the most concrete OCs currently on my mind.
Xanthi (1st row)
She's a death godlike born to the Darcozzi family. The journal picrew is meant to be her "official" representation in family portraits. She's also sometimes drawn with a veil. The post-it is Xanthi vandalizing one of these portraits, though she'd draw a grumpier face.
For her sword, I went for a simple design in the colors of the Vailian Republic emblem - though the hues aren't quite right - with flames because Paladin.
Seyla (2nd row)
She's a pale elf from the White that Wends, recreating her in the picrew wasn't too hard. I went with a green and yellow color scheme because Priest of Eothas.
I crammed as much sun symbolism as I could on the sword. I don't really remember the reasoning behind the butterflies but they fit her vibe. It's bloody because her stubborn honesty and rigid black and white mentality lead to her having a higher kill count than the more pragmatic and apathetic Xanthi.
Thank you for the tag! tagging @rooksongbird and @quitefair (and anyone else who wants - show me your ocs with their swords!)

You know I have my own wonderful idea and this takes place specifically in the young justice universe around season 1 since that has the best time frame to include this now we all know The Light was vandal savage attempt to rule the world again but have you noticed that the league of assassins philosophy of killing corruption and ra's being immortal too with lazurus pit, And vandal desire for control fits perfectly with the constant battle between Templars and assassins, so what if the league was originally the brotherhood and the templars was originally founded by vandal savage and I'm not talking about the weird backstory we got in AC origins with Julius Cesar though those events still happened but vandal is the one who formalized the templars into what they are, however here's where the assassins come in and especially ra's see while vandal was more than willing to fake his death every now and than to let the templars grow on their own if necessary, and to make the assassins think they won for a bit before coming back with a new name and because of that he's been able to rule the world the same way he's always did in the normal comics just this time he has a secret army at his beck and call during that entire time.
Then the assassins finally got a true victory with ra's becoming an assassin and eventually grandmaster who found, wait for it, an isu artifact that allows anyone who had died to come back to life but of course as we all know isu bullshit tends to have side effects and the Lazarus pit was no different but thanks to ra's leadership and the Lazarus pit the assassins for the first time in decades have finally won a final victory against the vandal and his templars at least until vandal waited for the day he can recreate his templars under a new name one where everyone will see the light of his leadership and the world will be his to control again.
So my point to all of this is, what if all the events of the assassins creed games up until the modern day before 2012 and before the start of season 1 of young justice all happened and that the moment vandal and his light start making moves, the league of assassins hear about it and catch the justice league and definitely batman off gaurd with a partnership and when the team is given a liason and new support in the form of Desmond, Shaun, and Rebecca.
So, in this one, we’re setting up Ra’s Al Ghul as the mentor of the League of Assassins and not a member of The Light?
Or are we going for the ‘things are different in this AU’ then go psyche! Ra’s Al Ghul is our Al Mualim and he’s a member of the Light!
Honestly, I wanna go for the second idea because, this way, we can set up Ra’s Al Ghul as a parental figure of Desmond who raised him because he was an orphan and he would act as both his master and his mentor, mirroring Altaïr’s relationship with Al Mualim.
So when Ra’s Al Ghul is finally shown as a member of The Light, it would hammer in how Ra’s and Desmond’s relationship mirroring Altaïr and Al Mualim’s relationship was a hint of Ra’s true ‘allegiance’.
Also, this would give Desmond an easier time to befriend Dick as they both got… uuhh… ‘complicated’ relationship with their father-figure (although Desmond having Ra’s as his father figure makes Dick think “atleast Bruce wasn’t as bad…”).
Although, by Leagues of Assassin standards, Ra’s does act like a good father to Desmond and he cares for Desmond like he does for Talia so when the truth of his allegiance to The Light comes to… well… light… there’s gonna be some sweet, sweet angst, not just between Desmond and Ra’s but with the team (especially Dick) and Desmond on how loyal Desmond is to Ra’s.
Unorganized Notes (I’m messing up the timeline XD):
Yeah, I’m doubling down on it because the Desmond is Talia’s twin ask has some really good ideas on Desmond’s relationship with the League members.
Talia treats Desmond as a little brother and even tells Batman to look after him because, in her own words, he’s still naive. This makes Batman believe that Desmond is a good person.
He is but he was raised to be an Assassin so he has no qualms killing bad guys. Shaun and Rebecca actually act more as his moral compass and remind him that the team won’t like it if you kill this person or something.
Desmond is known as Ra’s son although some of the League members say it in a more derogatory way as he isn’t related to Ra’s by blood.
Soooo… in the end, Desmond is the one who ‘kills’ Ra’s although he does mention that Ra’s won’t say dead to the team. He leaves Young Justice afterward to take care of the League. This though, does end up splitting the League between Desmond and Deathstroke but Desmond and his League will pop in and out to help the Young Justice every now and then.
Vandal Savage calls Desmond ‘mentor’ after Desmond takes over half of the League. He talks about Desmond as if he was a completely different person, saying how he always knew that Desmond would assassinate Ra’s. No matter what trickery Ra’s do to him, his blood will always guide him to be the thorn in the Templars’ side.
Desmond doesn’t remember it but he has been drowned in the Lazarus Pit… by Ra’s himself. Talia would imply it happened multiple times because Desmond’s mind is ‘fragile’.
Depending on how old Desmond is supposed to be in this AU, he either acts as Cassandra’s older brother or her father figure. He’s the reason why Cassandra was able to get away from Lady Shiva (honestly, I don’t like how Young Justice merged Lady Shiva and David Cain and made Lady Shiva more evil in this one but I'll use it for the plot). Whether Cassandra stays with Desmond or she becomes Orphan is up to you.
Red-Hooded Ninja is also close to Desmond who pretty much taught him after he lost his memories. Desmond has no idea who Jason Todd was and that’s why he didn’t know Red-Hooded Ninja’s real identity.
Later on, Desmond would start remembering memories that don’t feel like his own at all. Talia sees this and tells him to use the Lazarus Pit, implying that the reason why Ra’s always ‘drown’ Desmond in the pit was because of these memories.
So Desmond doesn’t. Instead, he tries to make sense of the memories he’s getting.
This is the part where you can go: (1) Those memories are Desmond’s ‘erased’ memories from when he was actually Ra’s younger brother whose Creed made him butt heads with his older brother ending with Ra’s using the Lazarus Pit to make Desmond forget about the Creed he had and become more easily controlled to do Ra’s wishes, (2) Desmond was actually Ra’s father who he usurped and took the League from (which was called the Brotherhood before) after they found the Lazarus Pit, or (3) Desmond was found floating in the Pit without his memories and Ra’s made use of that with Desmond’s actually memories being either (3.1) Desmond is part of the Isu race who survived because he was dunked in the Lazarus Pit which he had created or (3.2) he’s the real Desmond Miles from the AC world that got transported to the Young Justice world together with the Lazarus Pit.
Regardless of whichever plot you choose, the idea is Desmond’s memories that were coming back were from his previous ‘lives’ before the Lazarus Pit erased his memories over and over again. This is the part where you can play with Desmond’s ancestors’ memories by making them memories of Desmond’s past lives before he is once again drown in the Lazarus Pit to forget everything.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
April 7, 2024 (Sunday)
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
APR 08, 2024
In August 1870 a U.S. exploring expedition headed out from Montana toward the Yellowstone River into land the U.S. government had recognized as belonging to different Indigenous tribes.
By October the men had reached the Yellowstone, where they reported they had “found abundance of game and trout, hot springs of five or six different kinds…basaltic columns of enormous size” and a waterfall that must, they wrote, “be in form, color and surroundings one of the most glorious objects on the American Continent.” On the strength of their widely reprinted reports, the secretary of the interior sent out an official surveying team under geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden. With it went photographer William Henry Jackson and fine artist Thomas Moran.
Banker and railroad baron Jay Cooke had arranged for Moran to join the expedition. In 1871 the popular Scribner’s Monthly published the surveyor’s report along with Moran’s drawings and a promise that Cooke’s Northern Pacific Railroad would soon lay tracks to enable tourists to see the great natural wonders of the West.
But by 1871, Americans had begun to turn against the railroads, seeing them as big businesses monopolizing American resources at the expense of ordinary Americans. When Hayden called on Congress to pass a law setting the area around Yellowstone aside as a public park, two Republicans—Senator Samuel Pomeroy of Kansas and Delegate William H. Clagett of Montana—introduced bills to protect Yellowstone in a natural state and provide against “wanton destruction of the fish and game…or destruction for the purposes of merchandise or profit.”
The House Committee on Public Lands praised Yellowstone Valley’s beauty and warned that “persons are now waiting for the spring…to enter in and take possession of these remarkable curiosities, to make merchandise of these bountiful specimens, to fence in these rare wonders so as to charge visitors a fee, as is now done at Niagara Falls, for the sight of that which ought to be as free as the air or water.” It warned that “the vandals who are now waiting to enter into this wonderland will, in a single season, despoil, beyond recovery, these remarkable curiosities which have required all the cunning skill of nature thousands of years to prepare.”
The New York Times got behind the idea that saving Yellowstone for the people was the responsibility of the federal government, saying that if businesses “should be strictly shut out, it will remain a place which we can proudly show to the benighted European as a proof of what nature—under a republican form of government—can accomplish in the great West.”
On March 1, 1872, President U. S. Grant, a Republican, signed the bill making Yellowstone a national park.
The impulse to protect natural resources from those who would plunder them for profit expanded 18 years later, when the federal government stepped in to protect Yosemite. In June 1864, Congress had passed and President Abraham Lincoln signed a law giving to the state of California the Yosemite Valley and nearby Mariposa Big Tree Grove “upon the express conditions that the premises shall be held for public use, resort and recreation.”
But by 1890 it was clear that under state management the property had been largely turned over to timber companies, sheep-herding enterprises, and tourist businesses with state contracts. Naturalist John Muir warned in the Century magazine: “Ax and plow, hogs and horses, have long been and are still busy in Yosemite’s gardens and groves. All that is accessible and destructible is rapidly being destroyed.” Congress passed a law making the land around the state property in Yosemite a national park area, and the United States military began to manage the area.
The next year, in March 1891, Congress gave the president power to “set apart and reserve…as public reservations” land that bore at least some timber, whether or not that timber was of any commercial value. Under this General Revision Act, also known as the Forest Reserve Act, Republican president Benjamin Harrison set aside timber land adjacent to Yellowstone National Park and south of Yosemite National Park. By September 1893, about 17 million acres of land had been put into forest reserves. Those who objected to this policy, according to Century, were “men [who] wish to get at it and make it earn something for them.”
Presidents of both parties continued to protect American lands, but in the late nineteenth century it was New York Republican politician Theodore Roosevelt who most dramatically expanded the effort to keep western lands from the hands of those who wanted only their timber and minerals.
Roosevelt was concerned that moneygrubbing was eroding the character of the nation, and he believed that western land nurtured the independence and community that he worried was disappearing in the East. During his presidency, which stretched from 1901 to 1909, Roosevelt protected 141 million acres of forest and established five new national parks.
More powerfully, he used the 1906 Antiquities Act, which Congress had passed to stop the looting and sale of Indigenous objects and sites, to protect land. The Antiquities Act allowed presidents to protect areas of historic, cultural, or scientific interest. Before the law was a year old, Roosevelt had created four national monuments: Devils Tower in Wyoming, El Morro in New Mexico, and Montezuma Castle and Petrified Forest in Arizona.
In 1908, Roosevelt used the Antiquities Act to protect the Grand Canyon.
Since then, presidents of both parties have protected American lands. President Jimmy Carter rivaled Roosevelt’s protection of land when he protected more than 100 million acres in Alaska from oil development. Carter’s secretary of the interior, Cecil D. Andrus, saw himself as a practical man trying to balance the needs of business and environmental needs but seemed to think business interests had become too powerful: “The domination of the department by mining, oil, timber, grazing and other interests is over.”
In fact, the fight over the public lands was not ending; it was entering a new phase. Since the 1980s, Republicans have pushed to reopen public lands to resource development, maintaining even today that Democrats have hampered oil production although it is currently, under President Joe Biden, at an all-time high.
The push to return public lands to private hands got stronger under former president Donald Trump. On April 26, 2017, Trump signed an executive order—Executive Order 13792—directing his secretary of the interior, Ryan Zinke, to review designations of 22 national monuments greater than 100,000 acres, made since 1996. He then ordered the largest national monument reduction in U.S. history, slashing the size of Utah’s Bears Ears National Monument by 85%—a goal of uranium-mining interests—and that of Utah’s Escalante–Grand Staircase by about half, favoring coal interests.
“No one better values the splendor of Utah more than you do,” Trump told cheering supporters. “And no one knows better how to use it.”
In March 2021, shortly after he took office, President Biden announced a new initiative to protect 30% of U.S. land, fresh water, and oceans areas by 2030, a plan popularly known as 30 by 30. Also in March 2021, Supreme Court chief justice John Roberts urged opponents of land protection to push back against the Antiquities Act, saying the broad protection of lands presidents have established under it is an abuse of power.
In October 2021, President Biden restored Bears Ears and Escalante–Grand Staircase to their original size. “Today’s announcement is not just about national monuments,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico, said at the ceremony. “It’s about this administration centering the voices of Indigenous people and affirming the shared stewardship of this landscape with tribal nations.”
In 2022, nearly 312 million people visited the country’s national parks and monuments, supporting 378,400 jobs and spending $23.9 billion in communities within 60 miles of a park. This amounted to a $50.3 billion benefit to the nation’s economy.
But the struggle over the use of public lands continues, and now the Republicans are standing on the opposite side from their position of a century ago. Project 2025, the blueprint for a second Trump presidency, demands significant increases in drilling for oil and gas. That will require removing land from federal protection and opening it to private development. As Roberts urged, Project 2025 promises to seek a Supreme Court ruling to permit the president to reduce the size of national monuments. But it takes that advice even further.
It says a second Trump administration “must seek repeal of the Antiquities Act of 1906.”

I need people to start keeping local copies of everything. Physical copies if you can swing it.
The internet is so fragile, and this isn't even going to be about how easily a company going under or deleting things can wipe out digital history.
I mean physically and logically.
One wrong command can knock the internet out for whole regions for hours if not days("you will be promoted to customer" was emphasized quite a bit in training).
Fiber and copper(your regular cable/dsl modem) connections can very easily break, or fail under extreme heat. I see it all the time. Bulldozers, backhoes, bullets, vandalism, a fiber break can take half a day or longer to break. A major storm will wreck things for weeks or months. Heatwaves will make internet unreliable at best and no amount of shielding will help. I've seen field techs jerry rig large fans in equipment rooms to supplement the normal cooling systems and that..not really working well.
With the climate altering much more quickly than anyone is prepared for, what happens when those lines break, and there's no one trained to repair them? What happens if society alters so much that there's no one to understand how to route and ip address or set up a dns server?
Physical media degrades as well but much more slowly.
There's a very realistic future where the early 21st century is poorly understood due to the digital footprint getting erased. All that art, history, culture, music, all those human connections we've built, gone.
And there's no way of knowing how easily someone in the future will be able to figure this arcane magic to rebuild and recreate this data, or even view it. Imagine how hard it would be for scientists in the future to figure out some old cisco networking manual without a lot of the context and ingrained knowledge we have?
Back the things you make up. Download the things you love. Burn cds and dvds and print out physical copies.

In Hanging Out what were some of the character's childhood like, and what did they do for fun, specifically Sonic's orphan childhood.
Oh man, that's a tricky question, because my logic is taking what canon establishes and moving mostly just forward in a different direction. Commenting on their childhoods feels weirdly wrong? If only because there's so many different angles I could take.
Sonic in particular feels "wrong" to get details for, but I like to think he actually was kind of bratty? And had a habit of being a bit of a vandal for fun, and playing "extreme soccer" with random objects, kicking them far and "catching" them like a mile away. But he hashis heart in the right place and got enough experience of breaking things and causing problems early on that he eventually shaped up into the hero we know now.
All the others after the cut!
Amy was likely a very... stand-alone child who was stuck with taking care of herself. She likely researched "spells" and forms of magic for fun, though she never likely found the best uses for it beyond summoning magic. I considered a plot point of her mom being an enigmatic figure who researched Little Planet, and that lead to Amy wanting to get into tarot, but I never got very far. I think she had minimal supervision and got a small amount of wealth from an inheritance and just made-do with that. Despite that, she still stuck with being kind and doing her best to support others.
Tails likely didn't do much in particular for fun besides tinkering. He got bullied for his tails, etc etc, all kinda predictable there.
Shadow... fanon kinda came clutch and already outlined enough details there. Raised by Maria and Gerald, probably did cute slice of life stuff on the ARK at first before everything went to shit. For fun, he probably liked board games in particular. Maybe pong.
Tikal beat the shit out of people for fun, but in a friendly sparring way. In her eyes as a child, fighting should be purely recreational, and conflict should be settled with words. Naturally some aspects of that perspective got warped with time.
Mike is an interesting one. He basically got a crude simulation copy-paste of Sonic's childhood, but instead of being an orphan, he "grew up" with Eggman, who instilled a lot of obedience training. Which evidently backfired pretty hard for Hangin Out to be as it is. He likely played games like chess with Eggman for "'fun"", but he actually just prefers flying, since it's the one thing the original Sonic could never do.
Buddy was a government experiment who was actually similar to Shadow and Metal in terms of how he was "raised", so he never really got to "have fun" with any activity. Eventually as an adult though, he pursued his main hobbies, sound engineering and headphone/music reviewing. He runs a channel like a bizarro version of dankpods, where all of his humor is extremely dry and he goes into great technical detail about whatever he comes across.
Zero had the most fucked up upbringing, and likely fucking. Played knife games with drug lords for fun. That's the kind of messiness we're dealing with. He did not have a good life.
Sandy didn't get to really have a "Childhood" but her early years of operation involved snooping around different locations for archaeology and intel. From there she developed a love for music, often DJing for fun in secret.
Jeff is kind of. In his formative years, already? And we already know his deal. He plays minecraft and Civ and SimCity for fun.
Rouge stole shit for fun.
OH and CHASEY how could i forget?? Chasey is a mess lol. Chasey, um. ate food as a chao? and then enjoyed. Playing dress up with Cream. Also enjoyed dancing as a young blob.

How to Burn the Goat
Friends. The Gävle Goat still stands.
Tumblr media
I don't think the Swedes are going to pull it off this year. There's a bunch of shit working against them - not in the least the relocation from the Goat's traditional home in Castle Square to Rådhusesplanaden, a much more exposed location- so no dishonour is upon them. In the fight between recreational arsonists and the forces of law, sometimes the forces of law win. But it isn't about recreational arson, is it? It's the forces of Light beating back the long winter Darkness, the ritual immolation of 2022's psychic garbage, burned as a sacrifice for the Unconquered Sun. And I really, really don't need to tell you just how much psychic garbage there is to torch. So let's burn the motherfucker together.
The obvious and easy option to symbolically burn the Goat at a distance for tumblrinas is a "like to charge, share to cast" reblog chain. There's a few going round so I won't bother trying to link to them all. Slightly more involved is burning your own goat.
SAFETY FIRST MY DARLINGS
First off if you're in an area with a fire ban, don't fucking burn anything. Fire bans exist for a reason. Non fire options include:
Feed a picture of the Gävle Goat into a paper shredder, or just rip it up yourself.
Make Goat shaped foods (cookies, cake, even sammiches) and eat them.
Play my mate @thefallingdream's printable game The Goat Must Burn
Have a Goat themed cocktail, like an Old Goat or a Fainting Goat, or maybe goat milk lassi if you prefer to avoid alcohol.
Make effigies from Plasticine or modelling clay and flatten it
It's also a less widely celebrated tradition to toss the smaller Science Club Goat into the Gävle River. If you have a river to hand, you can always make a wee goatlet out of sticks, leaves and other natural materials and toss it right the fuck in. Remember, we're symbolic arsonists, not environmental vandals, so stick to shit that's in the river in the first place.
IF YOU DO OPT TO BURN, HERE IS A NON-EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF WAYS TO DO SO SAFELY.
Choose your burn location wisely. Safer places to burn include:
Fireplaces
Barbecues
Firepits
Braziers
Clear areas of concrete or tile (OUTDOORS)
Clear areas of beach, away from other people
Ash has a habit of floating, so don't burn close to buildings. Get yourself something to put out the fire if it gets away from you. For small goats, a bucket of water will probably do, but running water from a hose is better. If you want to have a fire extinguisher to hand, make sure you know how to use it.
I also suggest that if you're not someone who lights a lot of fires for whatever reason, find someone who does to help you keep shit under control. I've made a lot of campfires and bonfires in the last forty years, so I can confidently build and set fires, and keep them contained. Scouts and avid campers generally have an idea of what they're doing too, and I guess if you're in a climate where fireplaces are a thing you'll have more folks around who can cremate a goat safely.
We also won't be drinking until after the Goat is safely extinguished. Even though the average age of participants is mid thirties and we're all legally able to, even an intelligent person can make for a stupid drunk and we'd rather not risk accidents. This is double so for myself, as I will be the Designated Fire Maniac for this event.
Bad places to burn your Goat:
Bedrooms (especially on desks or beds)
Indoors in general
Leaf strewn woodlands
Barns
Roads
Around unsupervised small children or drunks
I know there's bound to be a few of you who want to burn a goat but who have unsupportive home environments where this kind of lightweight witchcraft is a punishable offense. I can't stress enough that even the Small Scale Abstract Option below can burn your damn house down if you try it secretly in your bedroom or whatever. Just opt for a non-fire option if that's you.
FRIENDS YOU WILL NOT CLEAR THE PSYCHIC GARBAGE OF THE YEAR IF YOU BURN DOWN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD IN THE PROCESS
Now that I've got that bit out of the way, let's burn shit!
Option One: Small Scale Abstract Option
Just write "goat" on a bit of paper or a leaf or other safe to burn material and burn it safely in a little metal bowl, brazier, or whatever. You can supe it up by using a scrap of paper with strong negative vibes associated with 2022, like a power bill, legal summons or passive-aggressive note from your roomie.
Tumblr media
Then ya burn it. Scrunch the paper into a ball, light your match, stuff the flaming end inside the ball of paper. Boom. Done.
If you want to print out the OG Goat or draw it, that works too. All we want to do here is consign the Goat to the ashes. That's it.
Option Two: Burn the Goat in Effigy
If you have space, time and the right level of bloody minded determination, why not build yourself a goat and burn it? It doesn't have to be complicated or large. Paper crafted goats or origami are fantastic for this, if you have the skill.
This one is made from toilet paper rolls and ice block sticks.
Tumblr media
This is the larger goat we burned in 2020. It was made of paper shopping bags, natural wool and corrugated cardboard packing boxes for support:
Tumblr media
If you're crafting your own there's a couple of considerations to keep in mind.
First is flammability. Stick to natural, flammable materials like paper, card, sticks and wood. String like twines made from jute, cotton or hemp, or natural yarn will also burn cleanly. I avoid adhesives at all and just use string, but if you want a glue wheatpaste will get the job done and will make the Goat smell like toast as it goes up. Metal fixtures like staples, nails or wire are fine too, just be mindful that they'll remain in the ashes afterwards and may need to be disposed of responsibly
Avoid using plastic tapes or glues like PVA. They burn fast and hot, in ways that can be unpredictable, and release nasty gases as they do. I generally also only use materials that are already the right color, but if you want to paint it avoid acrylic paints for the same reason you skip plastic tapes and glue. Tea and coffee washes will get the job done without choking you out or risking the goat burning unpredictably.
Both the goats above have hollow interiors. For us, this means we can write down our sorrows and insert them into the goat's body to be burned along with it. But it also provides oxygen for the fire and helps the goat to burn. I don't usually burn in proper fireplaces, but opt for short fast immolation so I don't use sticks or timber supports. If yours is going into a fireplace or barbecue you can use heavier materials that take longer to burn.
I am also not going to do any talking whatsoever about accelerants you can add to get this fire going. That is Advanced Level Immolation, and I will not be held accountable for any you people blasting your eyebrows off with a poorly timed spritzing of petrol. Let your designated fire maniac deal with that shit or just don't risk it at all.
Your second consideration when building your Goat is size. Pick your safe place to burn it before you start building, and construct it to fit its pyre. Again, safe places to burn your goat include:
Fireplaces
Barbecues
Firepits
Braziers
Clear areas of concrete or tile (OUTDOORS)
Clear areas of beach, away from other people
Small goats are just as good as large ones if you don't have a lot of room. For our purposes, burning an origami goat in a metal pail is just as good as my bigger guys. This year I'm crocheting a goat from paper yarn based very loosely on this pattern, because I've personally had a bitch of a year and each stitch is really sealing in that suffering. But it doesn't have to be fancy. It just needs to be goaty.
Let's make this happen, everyone!
Tumblr media
Pictured: My 2020 goat. I burn on New Year's Eve to give the Swedes time to get theirs done first. That wall behind the Goat is wet, and so is the grass. Not shown is the garden hose at the ready and the many sober adults supervising, including a Designated Fire Maniac (me).

The 2021 Goat. Co-incident? I think not.

Detective Pony
I recently received an ask from @querimoniousqueer about whether I had ever read Detective Pony by sonnetstuck. I hadn’t, but decided I should, so I read it over the past week.
Going in I knew almost nothing about it beyond the joke in Homestuck proper, in which Dirk sends Jane a vandalized copy of a Pony Pals book with substitutions made to the text for comic effect. The Detective Pony fanfic extrapolates off that premise and provides a Dirk-ified version of the entire novella.
At first I wasn’t particularly sold on the premise. Revisiting the story’s first page (which Hussie himself created in Homestuck), it’s actually not that funny. At the beginning of Act 6 Hussie took the opportunity of the new universe to update the in-universe date from April 13, 2009 to November 11, 2011. This is not a particularly long stretch of time but to emphasize this shift Hussie decided to throw in several references to what is, I assume, the singular piece of new media he had consumed during that period: the sitcom Parks and Recreation.
I’m not sure how hilarious Hussie thought it was to change a supporting character’s name to Pawnee Township, Indiana, the fictional setting of Parks and Recreation, but in 2023 the reference feels phenomenally dated, without the self-awareness of the intentionally dated references to Con Air elsewhere in the comic. Though the reference is a bit more interesting metafictionally (does Dirk, living in post-apocalyptic future Earth, intend to make a reference to a work popular in 2011, making it contemporaneous and thus relevant to Jane?), now that the audience of Homestuck is no longer themselves contemporaneous to Jane it’s hard to even crack a smile beyond the simple audaciousness of the premise.
As Detective Pony (the fanfic) continues, it quickly grows dull. In Homestuck, the joke is fairly short and works because of its aforementioned audaciousness, so seeing a subsequent 20-30 pages of what is basically the same idea repeated over and over (everyone swears, everyone is violent, the cat is Satanic, plus a few non sequitur references) wore me down pretty quickly.
Fortunately, the fanfic has some major cards to play.
The first longform philosophical digression on the corruption of lolcat memes grabbed my interest, and as the story goes on, an entirely new metafictional narrative emerges in which Dirk, the cynical and too-smart-for-his-own-good authorial figure, comes into conflict with the more earnest and sincere characters (and original author) of Pony Pals. A dichotomy is established between the intellectually probing but ironically detached nature of one authorial voice and the childish but emotionally honest nature of the other. The authorial voices begin to wage war against each other, with Dirk’s orange-texted narrative attempting to cover up the black-texted narrative of the other voices, leading to a complex series of machinations and an eventual exposing of Dirk’s bitter loneliness and self-doubt.
This all sounds rather familiar.
Indeed, halfway through this fic, I had to scroll to the top and check the date it was posted. October 14, 2014. Predating Homestuck’s Epilogues by roughly five years.
I find it difficult to believe that Hussie or his Epilogue co-authors had not read Detective Pony prior to writing the Epilogues. The thematic overlap is immense, let alone the explicit plot and metatextual elements, let alone the fact that all of those elements revolve specifically around Dirk. That’s not to say the two works are identical. Detective Pony leans far more heavily onto its author’s extensive knowledge of Western literature and philosophy (including significant references to Derrida, Dante, Plato, Socrates, and others), while the Epilogues aggrandize the scope of stakes of the plot and weave in a far wider amount of character threads.
I’d recommend Detective Pony to anyone still confused or potentially even hurt by the Epilogues; the “character assassination” done in Detective Pony is done to characters from a story about ponies for little girls as opposed to your beloved Homestuck characters, so it might be much easier to approach, grapple with, and understand the themes of the Epilogues without the large amount of emotional baggage characters like Jane, Jake, Jade, Dave, and so on carry with them. It might shed more insight on what Hussie and his co-authors were attempting with the Epilogues, though you might also find it a bit dull if you’re not familiar with Derrida or the other frequently-quoted philosophers within the text. I’m not a philosophy person myself (way more of a classical fiction junkie), but still I was able to follow along and enjoy it.

I've read very few reviews of the Netflix Persuasion, but I'm already sick of reviews that imply everyone who dislikes the adaptation is a "purist". As if we all fall into a dead swoon if the characters aren't in perfect historical bonnets and sedately mince their way through a word-for-word recreation of the book. As if we're too closed-minded to accept creativity and innovation and just want the exact same thing every time.
I sure don't demand purity. I don't know anyone who does. Any adaptation makes changes, and I welcome creativity and innovation. Give me something I haven't seen before! Figure out a creative way to present this story to the audience! I just demand that anything that calls itself an adaptation actually adapts the book it's based on.
If you're going to adapt a book, you should at least like it. You shouldn't be aiming to "make the book less boring". You can emphasize certain parts of the text. You can draw unique character readings. You can even critique parts of the original. But you should at least appreciate what the original is doing. You should understand why it makes the choices it does so you can adapt or alter them in ways that make sense to a modern audience. You can't be like, "The original is boring so we're going to mash in a bunch more interesting stuff," and expect people to accept it as a valid adaptation of the original. If you want to make an original movie, make your own dumb movie. Don't drag Austen's work into it and then claim it's the audience's fault when they object to the fact that the movie's nothing like the book you vandalized.
