funniest choice an author can make for their main character is that they're canonically terrible at sex. forget the heroes who can do it all, this guy can only do it poorly

He slept, curled like a kitten, his brow nearly touching mine, on the other end of his pallet. His breathing was deep and even, and one long hand was palm up on the blankets between us, as if in offering, or beseeching something of me. Sleepily I reached over and set my hand in his. He did not seem to wake. Strangely, I felt at peace.

Propaganda:
The White Tower (The Wheel of Time):
You are an Accepted in the White Tower in hopes of becoming an Aes Sedai. You became an Accepted by going through a test through the use of a magical device that emotionally traumatized you by forcing you to go through scenarios where you have to make a decision to walk away from people in your life that need your help. You are told some women never return from this test and are lost forever. The Aes Sedai do not go back for them as they do not know exactly how these devices work. A good portion of your teachers might be evil but you don't know which ones they are and who you can trust as it could be any of them. The Aes Sedai deny the existence of an evil faction of them even exists.
The Black Tower (The Wheel of Time):
You are a male channeler, doomed to go insane and destroy everything around you. The entire world despises your very existence. You have very few options. You could be captured by the Aes Sedai and Gentled (a process which is essentially a magical lobotomy, which causes you to lose your will to live). You could end up being murdered by the people around you. Or you could join the Black Tower, which is essentially a magical military academy created by the Dragon Reborn himself. Your purpose there is to learn every possible way to kill with the One Power so you can be useful at the Last Battle against the forces of the Shadow. A few problems though. The principal is literally working for the devil. You have a very high probability of being turned to the Shadow against your will with magic. If you run away and you're caught, you will be murdered and your head will be displayed on a tree in the middle of the schoolyard.
Clerres (Realm of the Elderlings):
You are a prophet, able to see into the future via your dreams. Clerres' purpose is to train you how to interpret those dreams and visions for the betterment of humanity in order to put the world on a better path. Or so you think. The Servants who run the school have their own agenda which isn't what you initially thought it was. The White Prophet, the Chosen One, is who they say it is and no one else, even if you are 100% certain it is you. They do this so they can set the world on the path that they think it should be and not necessarily what is for the best. If you fight against them, they will torture you into submission. They are intent on inducting you into their breeding program that they have for all their students. You have a high likelihood of being sexually assaulted by one of your teachers. If you run away, and are caught, you will be murdered via parasitic worms.
The Fulcrum (Broken Earth Trilogy):
You are an orogene, a user of powerful earth magic that has the capability to rip the world apart. The entire world despises your very existence. You are ripped from your family and treated as less than human because of your magic ability (by your own family as well). You are harshly treated by your Guardian and let known that your only worth as a person is what your magic can do for the world (while being kept on a tight leash by the school). If you are more powerful than the Fulcrum thinks they can handle, they will strap you to a device at the planet's fault lines and use you as a machine and force you to use your powers to prevent earthquakes. You are also forced to be part of a breeding program in hopes of producing more powerful mages.
Aretuza (The Witcher):
You are a mage in training at Aretuza, and there is a possibility that you are not there of your own free will. You have been physically and emotionally abused by your teachers. If you have elven blood, you have a high possibility of being kidnapped and used in a horrific experiment by one of your teachers that will turn you into a monster. If you fail as a novice, you will be turned into an eel and forced to power the school.

Do you have any thoughts about the parallel between Fitz hiding parts of himself from Molly that he doesn't think she will accept, and Beloved doing the same thing for Fitz, with Fitz being upset when he learns about Amber and other things? The recent post made me think about it
Hi anon,
That's a very good question, I haven't really thought about it before. I think there is indeed a parallel, and for quite a long time Fitz is truely struggling to accept all aspects of Beloved. But at the same time I think there are differences between these two relationships. Fitz is aware that Beloved is keeping parts of his life secret, and he knows not to bother Beloved about it or not to feel hurt. Exept when he feels his trust has been broken in Golden Fool, and we got to read that disastrous confrontation. But I think Molly doesn't know that Fitz is keeping secrets, she definitely didn't in the Farseer trilogy. I believe Fitz were given the chance to know Beloved better than anyone and to learn to accept who he is, but Molly didn't get that chance or not as much.
I wonder if Beloved should have been more forthcoming with Fitz, since Fitz certainly should have been that with Molly. But if I take two examples, the answer is maybe no, Fitz was lying about stuff that could impact Molly's life (assassin, royal bastard), and Beloved secrets about his feelings and past gender representations shouldn't impact Fitz that much.
Okay, at this point I'm only rambling and thinking out loud. I'm sure the answer could be exanded more, but I rather cut it short now :)

okay now you, top 5 rote characters? 👀
ohoho OKAY here we go
5. while none individually are in my top single characters i actually do wanna give this place to the Dragons, collectively, because they were why i picked up the universe in the first place. I was working my way through books with dragons in them and actually read the Rain Wilds books first (because someone told me they worked standalone) and while I think this series is the weakest in the RotE universe now that I've read the rest, it got me interested enough in the worldbuilding to go back to the start and see what was up with Tintaglia and those serpents and ships and whatnot. I like that they're haughty and entitled and annoying. RotE dragons are much more like cats in personality than anything else, which was a nice change from the themes i was getting in the other books i worked through of 1. beasts to be dominated or 2. wise and mysteriously good/kind with very little complexity to that despite being, you know, huge apex predators.
4. KETTRICKEN. god im OBSESSED with the mountain kingdom and their concept of ruling... my love my queen my Sacrifice... uhg I love how much she grows from angry angsty girl into a monarch. and she never lets go of her mountain concept of rulership despite spending way more of her life in the duchies surrounded by people who'd love for her to step back and do less. but what really makes her my personal blorbo is the way she comforts Fitz when no one else is paying enough to attention to realize how close to breakdown he is at any given point. Hugging him. Drugging him to make sure he has a good nights sleep. Like she was the ONLY ONE who TRULY wept with him for Nighteyes and understood what that loss meant to him, not just because she had her own bond with Nighteyes but knew Fitz's went so much deeper than hers and that he wouldn't take the space to grieve that loss when needed on his own. Kettricken just... cares. about people, about the kingdom, about everything, and does what she can for them.
3-2-1 im cheating im cheating im cheating and my top 3 are of course a 3-way-tie of THE trio, Nighteyes, the Fool, and Fitz. honestly how could they not be 😭 i love them in part because i love what they each are to the other... like everyone else from Fitz's early life hurt him in terrible ways (Burrich, Chade, Verity, Shrewd... fuck man) but he imprinted on them anyway, because he was a sad scared lonely child who had just been ripped away from everything he knew. as soon as he got 1 singular crumb of kindness from anyone he fell into full devotion even when what they had him do was to his own detriment, again and again. And it's the person who is SUPPOSED to be the one pushing him into certain paths, watching him fall into prophecy and die who, counter to what you'd think, is not that kind of person. The Fool is the one who is most painfully aware of everything Fitz can do and how to point him towards it but he always somehow gives Fitz a choice about it, not an order or demand. And Nighteyes bonds to Fitz and is the one true, solid bond where he's not trying to use Fitz for anything, he just wants them to both Be. And selflessly gives up the kind of life they could have had together, with other wolves or other witted, for Fitz's sake. It's funny that these two relationships for Fitz are almost opposite in a way... he and Nighteyes are so entwined that even other Witted are disturbed by how close they are, and how little they have reserved for themselves. Meanwhile Fitz spends so many books trying to keep the Fool at arm's length despite how powerfully they are drawn back to each other again and again. Fitz throws himself into Nighteyes as a way to escape himself, but can't bear to let himself get too close to the Fool because he's afraid of what that bond would mean with another human, especially one he perceives as male. And it takes him sooooooo many books to finally get past that but thas growth baby! Anyway that difference makes it funny to me how Nighteyes/the Fool comparatively very quickly settle into a comfortable dynamic. Nighteyes accepts the Fool as part of their Pack, the Fool accepts Nighteyes as an integral part of Fitz, and they get on with keeping each other warm in the woods while trying to manage Fitz's much more complicated problems. uhg they are all my own Beloved.

No spoilers outside of this question because this is my first time reading the series ajd im not done with book 3 but... am I right in calculating that Fitz is like, 17 at most when his daughter is born?? Because I think it was mentioned that he was like 13 when he and Chade first discovered the Forged Ones, and then in book 2 they mention that it's the third summer of the raiders Forging people, making Fitz roughly 16 when he gets killed, and it seems like it's summer again when he Skill-sees Molly giving birth which would put him at around 17 years old. Wild if true, my guy talks and thinks and has the trauma of like a 40 year old war veteran. And now he's a teen dad on top of it all?

That talk in Fool's Fate is basically:
The Fool: I have to go for the sake of the world
Fitz: Then let me come with you
The Fool: Fitz, I love you more than anyone, but I can’t love you more than everyone.
Fitz: So...that’s a no?
